We study the propagation of a neutrino in a medium that consists of two or more thermal backgrounds of electrons and nucleons moving with some relative velocity, in the presence of a static and homogeneous electromagnetic field. We calculate the neutrino self-energy and dispersion relation using the linear thermal Schwinger propagator, we give the formulas for the dispersion relation and discuss general features of the results obtained, in particular the effects of the stream contributions. As a specific example we discuss in some detail the case of a magnetized two-stream electron, i.e., two electron backgrounds with a relative velocity $\vec v$ in the presence of a magnetic field. For a neutrino propagating with momentum $\vec k$, in the presence of the stream the neutrino dispersion relation acquires an anisotropic contribution of the form $\hat k\cdot\vec v$ in addition to the well known term $\hat k\cdot\vec B$, as well as an additional contribution proportional to $\vec B\cdot\vec v$. We consider the contribution from a nucleon stream background as an example of other possible stream backgrounds, and comment on possible generalizations to take into account the effects of inhomogeneous fields. We explain why a term of the form $\hat k\cdot(\vec v\times\vec B)$ does not appear in the dispersion relation in the constant field case, while a term of similar form can appear in the presence of an inhomogeneous field involving its gradient.
The neutrino dispersion in the magnetized medium was analyzed as a function of the neutrino spin and mass. It was shown that in a super-strong magnetic field plasma contribution to the neutrino energy greatly exceeds the analogous correction in the field-free case.
The neutrino dispersion in the charge symmetric magnetized plasma is investigated. We have studied the plasma contribution into the additional energy of neutrino and obtained the simple expression for it. We consider in detail the neutrino self-energy under physical conditions of weak field, moderate field and strong field limits. It is shown that our result for neutrino dispersion in moderate magnetic field differ substantially from the previous one in the literature.
We calculate the one-loop neutrino self-energy in a magnetized plasma to all orders in the magnetic field. The calculation is done in a general gauge. We obtain the dispersion relation and effective potential for neutrinos in a CP-symmetric plasma under various conditions, and show that, while the self-energy depends on the gauge parameter $ξ$, the dispersion relation and effective potential to leading order are independent of it.
The quantum electrodynamical (QED) short wavelength correction on plasma wave propagation for a non-relativistic quantum plasma is investigated. A general dispersion relation for a thermal multi-component quantum plasma is derived. It is found that the classical dispersion relation for any wave mode can be modified to include quantum and short wavelength QED effects by simple substitutions of the thermal velocity and the plasma frequency. Furthermore, the dispersion relation has been modified to include QED effects of strong magnetic fields. It is found that strong magnetic fields together wit…
We derive general expressions for the neutrino dispersion relation in a magnetized plasma with a wide range of temperatures, chemical potentials, and magnetic field strengths. If the electron and proton chemical potentials vanish, as in the early Universe, there is no magnetization contribution to the neutrino refractive index to leading order in the Fermi coupling constant, contrary to claims in the recent literature. Therefore, as long as the magnetic field satisfies $B\simleq T^2$, the neutrino refractive index in the early Universe is dominated by the standard ``non-local term''. If neutri…
We study the polarization and dispersion properties of gluons moving within a weakly magnetized background at one-loop order. To this end, we show two alternative derivations of the charged fermion propagator in the weak field expansion and use this expression to compute the lowest order magnetic field correction to the gluon polarization tensor. We explicitly show that, in spite of its cumbersome appearance, the gluon polarization tensor is transverse as required by gauge invariance. We also show that none of the three polarization modes develops a magnetic mass and that gluons propagate alon…
We study the transverse propagation of photons in a magnetized vacuum considering radiative corrections in the one-loop approximation. The dispersion equation is modified due to the magnetized photon self-energy in the transparency region ($0<ω<2m_e$). The aim of our study is to explore propagation of photons in a neutron star magnetosphere (described by magnetized vacuum). The solution of the dispersion equation is obtained in terms of analytic functions. The larger the magnetic field, the lower the phase velocity and the more the dispersion curve deviates from the light-cone. For fixed value…
The spin effects on electromagnetic waves in a strongly magnetized plasma with rare collisions is considered with the help of relativistic kinetic equations, which takes into account the electron spin dynamics in the selfconsistent electric and magnetic fields. It is shown that for electromagnetic waves propagating almost perpendicular to ambient magnetic field the spin effects become essential in the vicinity of electron gyrofrequency and the corresponding wave dispersion and growth rate of the electromagnetic spin waves in the presence of intense quasi monoenergetic fluxes of neutrino is det…
The influence of strongly magnetized electron-positron plasma on the radiative neutrino transition $\nng$ is investigated. The probability and mean losses of the neutrino energy and momentum are calculated taking account of the photon dispersion and large radiative corrections near the resonance. It is shown that the combined effect of plasma and strong magnetic field decreases the probability and mean values of the neutrino energy and momentum loss in comparison with these values obtained in pure magnetic field.
The radiative decay of sterile neutrinos with typical masses of 10 keV is investigated in the presence of a strong magnetic field and degenerate plasma. Full account is taken of the strongly modified photon dispersion relation relative to vacuum. The limiting cases of relativistic and non-relativistic plasma are analyzed. The decay rate in a strongly magnetized plasma as a function of the electron number density is compared with the un-magnetized case. We find that a strong magnetic field suppresses the catalyzing influence of the plasma on the decay rate.
The effect of a strongly magnetized cold plasma on the Compton-like photoproduction of a neutrino-antineutrino pair on an electron, $γe \to e ν\bar ν$, has been considered. The contribution of this process to the neutrino emissivity in both the non-resonance and the resonance cases has been calculated with taking account of the photon dispersion properties in medium. Our results show that the neutrino emissivity owing to the $γe \to e ν\bar ν$ reaction is significantly modified as compared to the previously reported data.
We evaluate the three-photon vertex functions at order $B$ and $B^{2}$ in a weak constant magnetic field at finite temperature and density with on shell external lines. Their application to the study of the photon splitting process leads to consider high energy photons whose dispersion relations are not changed significantly by the plasma effects. The absorption coefficient is computed and compared with the perturbative vacuum result. For the values of temperature and density of some astrophysical objects with a weak magnetic field, the matter effects are negligible.
The process of neutrino propagation through an active medium consisting of magnetic field and plasma is analysed. We consider in detail the contribution of a magnetic field B into the neutrino self-energy operator Sigma (p). The results for this contribution were contradictory in the previous literature. For the conditions of the early universe where the background medium consists of a charge-symmetric plasma, the pure B-field contribution to the neutrino dispersion relation is proportional to (e B)^2 and thus comparable to the contribution of the magnetized plasma. The neutrino self-energy op…
The electromagnetic processes of Compton scattering and photon splitting/merging are investigated in the presence of strongly magnetized electron-positron plasma. The influence of these processes on the radiation transfer in the astrophysical environment is studied. In particular, the contribution of the processes under consideration in coefficients of the transfer equation is calculated. We show the importance of photon splitting/merging contribution and taking into account of photon dispersion and wave function renormalization in strong magnetic field and plasma.
We systematically investigate the effect of the anomalous magnetic moment(AMM) of quarks on the magnetized QCD matter, including the magnetic susceptibility, the inverse magnetic catalysis around the critical temperature and the neutral/charged pion and rho meson spectra under magnetic fields. The dynamical AMM of quarks, its coupling with magnetic field causes Zeeman splitting of the dispersion relation of quarks thus changes the magnetism properties and meson mass spectra under magnetic fields. It is found that including the AMM of quarks cannot fully understand lattice results of the magnet…
In the presence of a thermal medium or an external electro-magnetic field, neutrinos can interact with photon, mediated by the corresponding charged leptons (real or virtual). The effect of a medium or an electromagnetic field is two-fold - to induce an effective $νγ$ vertex and to modify the dispersion relations of all the particles involved to render the processes kinematically viable. It has already been noted that in a medium neutrinos acquire an effective charge, which in the standard model of electroweak interaction comes from the vector type vertex of weak interaction. On the other hand…
The relativistic kinetic equations (RKE) for lepton plasma in the presence of a strong external magnetic field are derived in Vlasov approximation. The new RKE for the electron spin distribution function includes the weak interaction with neutrinos originated by the axial vector current ($\sim c_A$) and provided by the parity nonconservation. In a polarized electron gas Bloch equation describing the evolution of the magnetization density perturbation is derived from the electron spin RKE being modified in the presence of neutrino fluxes. Such modified hydrodynamical equation allows to obtain t…
The properties of non-interacting $σ$ and $π^{0}$ mesons are studied at finite temperature, chemical potential and in the presence of a constant magnetic field. To do this, the energy dispersion relations of these particles, including nontrivial form factors, are derived using a derivative expansion of the effective action of a two-flavor, hot and magnetized Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model up to second order. The temperature dependence of the pole and screening masses as well as the directional refraction indices of magnetized neutral mesons are explored for fixed magnetic fields and chemical …
The complete quasi-particle spectrum of a magnetized electromagnetic plasma is systematically explored at zero and nonzero temperatures. To this purpose, the general structure of the one-loop corrected propagator of magnetized fermions is determined, and the dispersion relations arising from the pole of this propagator are numerically solved. It turns out that in the lowest Landau level, where only one spin direction is allowed, the spectrum consists of one positively (negatively) charged fermionic mode with positive (negative) spin. In contrast, in higher Landau levels, as an indirect consequ…
We study the properties of neutrinos propagating in an isotropic magnetized medium in the two physical approximations of degenerate Fermi gas and classical plasma. The dispersion relation shows that, for peculiar configurations of the magnetic field, neutrinos can propagate freely as in vacuum, also for very large density; this result can be very important in the study of supernova evolution. For mixed neutrinos, the presence of a magnetic field can alter significatively MSW oscillations, and for particular configurations of the field the resonance condition no longer occurs. Furthermore, on t…
The induced axial current and the chiral anomaly are studied in the normal phase of magnetized relativistic matter. A special attention is paid to the role of the chiral shift parameter Delta, leading to a relative shift of the longitudinal momenta in the dispersion relations of opposite chirality fermions. In the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, it is shown directly from the form of the gap equation that Delta necessarily exists in the normal phase in a magnetic field. By making use of the gauge invariant point-splitting regularization, we then show that the presence of Delta essentially modifies th…
The directional weak decay constants of neutral pions are determined at finite temperature T, chemical potential μand in the presence of a constant magnetic field B. To do this, we first derive the energy dispersion relation of neutral pions from the corresponding effective action of a two-flavor, hot and magnetized Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. Using this dispersion relation, including nontrivial directional refraction indices, we then generalize the PCAC relation of neutral pions and derive the Goldberger-Treiman (GT) as well as the Gell--Mann-Oakes-Renner (GOR) relations consisting of directio…
The thermodynamic properties of a non-interacting ideal Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) of finite volume have been studied in the presence of an external magnetic field. The inclusion of background magnetic field in the calculation of thermodynamic potential is done by the modification of the dispersion relations of the charged hadrons in terms of Landau quantization. The generalized Matsubara prescription has been employed to take into account the finite size effects in which a periodic (anti-periodic) boundary conditions is considered for the mesons (baryons). We find significant effects of the m…
Axions, the hypothetical particles restoring the charge-parity symmetry in the strong sector of the Standard Model, and one of the most prone candidates for dark matter, are well-known to interact with plasmas. In a recent publication [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 120}, 181803 (2018)], we have shown that if the plasma dynamically responds to the presence of axions, then a new quasi-particle (the axion plasmon-polariton) can be formed, being at the basis of a new generation of plasma-based detection techniques. In this work, we exploit the axion-plasmon hybridization to actively produce axions in stre…
Neutrino-photon processes, forbidden in vacuum, can take place in presence of a thermal medium or an external electro-magnetic field, mediated by the corresponding charged leptons (real or virtual). The effect of a medium or an electromagnetic field is two-fold - to induce an effective $ν-γ$ vertex and to modify the dispersion relations of all the particles involved to render the processes kinematically viable. It has already been noted that in presence of a thermal medium such an electromagnetic interaction translates into the neutrino acquiring a small effective charge. In this work, we exte…
Based on transversality condition of gauge boson self-energy we have systematically constructed the general structure of the gauge boson two-point functions using four linearly independent basis tensors in presence of a nontrivial background, i.e., hot magnetized material medium. The hard thermal loop approximation has been used for the heat bath to compute various form factors associated with the gauge boson's two point functions both in strong and weak field approximation. We have also analyzed the dispersion of a gauge boson (e.g., gluon) using the effective propagator both in strong and we…
Even in the absence of a sizable tensor contribution, a B-mode polarization can be generated because of the competition between a pseudo-scalar background and pre-decoupling magnetic fields. By investigating the dispersion relations of a magnetoactive plasma supplemented by a pseudo-scalar interaction, the total B-mode polarization is shown to depend not only upon the plasma and Larmor frequencies but also on the pseudo-scalar rotation rate. If the (angular) frequency channels of a given experiment are larger than the pseudo-scalar rotation rate, the only possible source of (frequency dependen…
