We demonstrate via three examples that topological insulators (TI) offer a new platform for plasmonics. First, we show that the collective excitations of a thin slab of a TI display spin-charge separation. This gives rise to purely charge-like optical and purely spin-like acoustic plasmons, respectively. Second, we argue that the depletion layer mixes Dirac and Schrödinger electrons which can lead to novel features such as high modulation depths and interband plasmons. The analysis is based on an extension of the usual formula for optical plasmons that depends on the slab width and on the dielectric constant of the TI. Third, we discuss the coupling of the TI surface phonons to the plasmons and find strong hybridisation especially for samples with large slab widths.
We study a one-dimensional plasmonic system with non-trivial topology: a chain of metallic nanoparticles with alternating spacing, which is the plasmonic analogue to the Su-Schreiffer-Heeger model. We extend previous efforts by including long range hopping with retardation and radiative damping, which leads to a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with frequency dependence. We calculate band structures numerically and show that topological features such as quantised Zak phase persist due to chiral symmetry. This predicts parameters leading to topologically protected edge modes, which allows for position…
The identification of plasmons in systems below $ \sim $10 nm in size is a tremendous challenge. Any sharp distinction of the excitation character (non-plasmonic vs plasmonic) becomes blurred in this range of sizes, where quantum effects become important. Here we define a {\em plasmonicicty index} that quantifies the plasmonic character of selected optical excitations in small nanostructures, starting from first principles calculations, based on (TD)DFT. This novel approach allows us to overcome the aforementioned problems, providing a direct and quantitative classification of the plasmonic ch…
We report strong amplification of photo-magnetic spin precession in Co-doped YIG employing a surface plasmon excitation in a metal-dielectric magneto-plasmonic crystal. Plasmonic enhancement is accompanied by the localization of the excitation within the 300~nm-thick layer inside the transparent dielectric garnet. Experimental results are nicely reproduced by numerical simulations of the photo-magnetic excitation. Our findings demonstrate the magneto-plasmonic concept of subwavelength localization and amplification of the photo-magnetic excitation in dielectric YIG:Co and open up a path to all…
We introduce and theoretically study the plasmon-photogalvanic effect in the planar noncentrosymmetric plasmonic crystal containing a homogeneous two-dimensional electron system gated by a periodic metal grating with an asymmetric unit cell. The plasmon-photogalvanic DC current arises due to the two-dimensional electron drag by the noncentrosymmetric plasmon modes excited under normal incidence of terahertz radiation. We show that the collective plasmon modes of the planar plasmonic crystal become strongly noncentrosymmetric in the weak coupling regime of their anticrossing. Large plasmon wave…
Plasmon in graphene possesses many unique properties. It originates from the collective motion of massless Dirac fermions and the carrier density dependence is distinctively different from conventional plasmons. In addition, graphene plasmon is highly tunable and shows strong energy confinement capability. Most intriguing, as an atom-thin layer, graphene and its plasmon are very sensitive to the immediate environment. Graphene plasmons strongly couple to polar phonons of the substrate, molecular vibrations of the adsorbates, and lattice vibrations of other atomically thin layers. In this revie…
We present a unified approach to describe spasing in plasmonic systems modeled by quantum emitters interacting with resonant plasmon mode. We show that spaser threshold implies detailed energy transfer balance between the gain and plasmon mode and derive explicit spaser condition valid for arbitrary plasmonic systems. By defining carefully the plasmon mode volume relative to the gain region, we show that the spaser condition represents, in fact, the standard laser threshold condition extended to plasmonic systems with dispersive dielectric function. For extended gain region, the saturated mode…

We propose a plasmonic device consisting of a concentric ring grating acting as an efficient tool for directional launching and detection of surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs). Numerical simulations and optical characterizations are used to study the fabricated structured gold surface. We demonstrate that this circularly symmetrical plasmonic device provides an efficient interface between free space radiation and SPPs. This structure offers an excellent platform for the study of hybrid plasmonics in general and of plasmon-emitter couplings in particular, such as those occurring when exciting dy…
Understanding of fundamental physics of plasmonic instabilities is the key issue for the design of a new generation of compact electronic devices required for numerous THz applications. Variable width plasmonic devices have emerged as potential candidates for such an application. The analysis of the variable width plasmonic devices presented in this paper shows that these structures enable both the Dyakonov-Shur instability (when the electron drift velocity everywhere in the device remains smaller than the plasma velocity) and the "plasmonic boom" instability that requires drift velocity excee…
The concept of quantum plasmonic excitations in plasmonic lattices, which similarly to Frenkel excitons in molecular crystals propagate by hopping from one nanoparticle to another, is introduced. A consistent quantum theory of such plasmonic excitons, beginning with the quantization of localized surface plasmons in a metal nanoparticle and including the radiative relaxation in both 1D and 2D lattices near a reflective substrate surface, is developed. A possible room-temperature Bose-Einstein condensation in the quantum gas of plasmonic excitons is also discussed.
The device applications of plasmonic systems such as graphene and two dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) in III-V heterostructures include terahertz detectors, mixers, oscillators and modulators. These two dimensional (2D) plasmonic systems are not only well-suited for device integration, but also enable the broad tunability of underdamped plasma excitations via an applied electric field. We present demonstrations of the coherent coupling of multiple voltage tuned GaAs/AlGaAs 2D plasmonic resonators under terahertz irradiation. By utilizing a plasmonic homodyne mixing mechanism to downconvert …
The nonlinear process of second harmonic generation (SHG) in monolayer (1L) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD), like $WS_2$, strongly depends on the polarization state of the excitation light. Combining plasmonic nanostructures with $1L-WS_2$ by transferring it onto a plasmonic nanoantenna array, a hybrid metasurface is realized impacting the polarization dependency of its SHG. Here, we investigate how plasmonic dipole resonances affect the process of SHG in plasmonic-TMD hybrid metasurfaces by nonlinear spectroscopy. We show, that the polarization dependency is affected by the lattice str…

We investigate the propagation of surface plasmons (SPPs) in a thin layer of copper surrounded by copper oxide Cu$_2$O. It is shown that particularly strong excitons in Cu$_2$O can have considerable impact on plasmon propagation, providing many opportunities for plasmon-exciton and plasmon-plasmon interactions. It is demonstrated that by the use of sufficiently thin metal layer, one can excite the so-called long range plasmons (LRSPPs) which can overcome the inherently high ohmic losses of Cu as compared to usual plasmonic metals such as silver. Analytical results are confirmed by numerical ca…
Hybrid photonic-plasmonic nanostructures allow one to engineer coupling of quantum emitters and cavity modes accounting for the direct coherent and environment mediated dissipative pathways. Using generalized plasmonic Dicke model, we explore the non-equilibrium phase diagram with respect to these interactions. The analysis shows that their interplay results in the extension of the superradiant and regular lasing states to the dissipative coupling regime and an emergent lasing phase without population inversion having boundary with the superradiant and normal states. Calculated photon emission…
Quantum photonics holds great promise for future technologies such as secure communication, quantum computation, quantum simulation, and quantum metrology. An outstanding challenge for quantum photonics is to develop scalable miniature circuits that integrate single-photon sources, linear optical components, and detectors on a chip. Plasmonic nanocircuits will play essential roles in such developments. Plasmonic components feature ultracompact geometries and can be controlled more flexibly and more energy-efficiently compared to conventional dielectric components due to strong field confinemen…
Photonic crystals and metamaterials have emerged as two classes of tailorable materials that enable precise control of light. Plasmonic crystals, which can be thought of as photonic crystals fabricated from plasmonic materials, Bragg scatter incident electromagnetic waves from a repeated unit cell. However, plasmonic crystals, like metamaterials, are composed of subwavelength unit cells. Here, we study terahertz plasmonic crystals of several periods in a two dimensional electron gas. This plasmonic medium is both extremely subwavelength ($\approx λ/100$) and reconfigurable through the applicat…
Graphene is a unique material to study fundamental limits of plasmonics. Apart from the ultimate single-layer thickness, its carrier concentration can be tuned by chemical doping or applying an electric field. In this manner the electrodynamic properties of graphene can be varied from highly conductive to dielectric. Graphene supports strongly confined, propagating surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) in a broad spectral range from terahertz to mid-infrared frequencies. It also possesses a strong magneto-optical response and thus provides complimentary architectures to conventional magneto-plasmo…
The deployment of plasmonic nanostructures to enhance nonlinear signal generation requires effective far-to-near field coupling and phase matching for frequency conversion. While the latter can be easily achieved at plasmonic hotspots, the former is an antenna problem that requires dedicated structural design and optimization. Plasmonic gratings are a simple but effective platform for nonlinear signal generation since they provide a well-defined momentum for photon-plasmon coupling and local hotspots for frequency conversion. In this work, a plasmonic azimuthally chirped grating (ACG), which p…
The development of nanoplasmonic devices, such as plasmonic circuits and metamaterial superlenses in the visible to ultraviolet frequency range, is hampered by the lack of low-loss plasmonic media. Recently, strong plasmonic response was reported in a certain class of topological insulators. Here, we present a first-principles density functional theory analysis of the dielectric functions of topologically insulating quaternary (Bi,Sb)2(Te,Se)3 trichalcogenide compounds. Bulk plasmonic properties, dominated by interband transitions, are observed from 2-3 eV and extend to higher frequencies. Mor…
Strong coupling between a single quantum emitter and an electromagnetic mode is one of the key effects in quantum optics. In the cavity QED approach to plasmonics, strongly coupled systems are usually understood as single-transition emitters resonantly coupled to a single radiative plasmonic mode. However, plasmonic cavities also support non-radiative (or "dark") modes, which offer much higher coupling strengths. On the other hand, realistic quantum emitters often support multiple electronic transitions of various symmetry, which could overlap with higher order plasmonic transitions -- in the …
Quantum plasmonics experiments have on multiple occasions reported the observation of quantum coherence of discrete plasmons, which exhibit remarkable preservation of quantum interference visibility, a seemingly surprising feature for systems mixing light and matter with high ohmic losses during propagation. However, most experiments to date used essentially weakly-confined plasmons, which experience limited light-matter hybridization, thus limiting the potential for decoherence. Here, we report quantum coherence of plasmons near the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) resonance frequency, where p…
Unlike conventional optics, plasmonics enables unrivalled concentration of optical energy well beyond the diffraction limit of light. However, a significant part of this energy is dissipated as heat. Plasmonic losses present a major hurdle in the development of plasmonic devices and circuits that can compete with other mature technologies. Until recently, they have largely kept the use of plasmonics to a few niche areas where loss is not a key factor, such as surface enhanced Raman scattering and biochemical sensing. Here, we discuss the origin of plasmonic losses and various approaches to eit…
