The general theoretical description of the influence of oscillating horizontal magnetic and quasimagnetic fields on the spin evolution in storage rings is presented. Previous results are generalized to the case when both of the horizontal components of the oscillating field are nonzero and the vector of this field circumscribes an ellipse. General equations describing a behavior of all components of the polarization vector are derived and the case of an arbitrary initial polarization is considered. The derivation is fulfilled in the case when the oscillation frequency is nonresonant. The general spin evolution in storage rings conditioned by vertical betatron oscillations is calculated as an example.
In storage rings, horizontal dispersion in the rf cavities introduces horizontal-longitudinal (xz) coupling, contributing to beam tilt in the xz plane. This coupling can be characterized by a "crabbing" dispersion term ζa that appears in the normal mode decomposition of the 1-turn transfer matrix. ζa is proportional to the rf cavity voltage and the horizontal dispersion in the cavity. We report experiments at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring Test Accelerator (CesrTA) where xz coupling was explored using three lattices with distinct crabbing properties. We characterize the xz coupling for each…
A previous publication has shown that the in-plane polarization (IPP) component of a polarized 0.97-GeV/c deuteron beam in the COSY storage ring may acquire a polarization half-life in excess of 1000 s through a combination of beam bunching, electron cooling (prior to any spin manipulation), sextupole field adjustment, and a limitation of the beam intensity. This paper documents further tests pointing to additional gains in the IPP lifetime if cooling is active throughout the beam store.
Error Determination in Sextupole Magnet Calibration and Alignment Measurements and Application to Horizontal Beam Size Calculations at the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring
We discuss the approach of generating round beams for ultimate storage rings using vertical damping wigglers (with horizontal magnetic field). The vertical damping wigglers provide damping and excite vertical emittance. This eliminates the need to generate large linear coupling that is impractical with traditional off-axis injection. We use a PEP-X compatible lattice to demonstrate the approach. This lattice uses separate quadrupole and sextupole magnets with realistic gradient strengths. Intrabeam scattering effects are calculated. The horizontal and vertical emittances are 22.3 pm and 10.3 p…
We developed a low emittance electron storage ring with large 6D dynamic aperture. Contrary to the traditional approach using strong focusing magnetic cells with optimized (and large) horizontal phase advance, which yields huge natural chromaticity, we employed a relatively weak focusing lattice with low chromaticity per cell and, consequently, wide on- and off-momentum dynamic aperture. Inevitable for weak focusing emittance growth, we compensated by slicing the lattice into many short, with small bending angle, elementary periodic cells. To reduce the size, we superimposed focusing gradient …
In a diffraction-limited storage ring (DLSR), the momentum acceptance (MA) might be limited by the half integer resonances (HIRs) excited by focusing errors, associated with the large detuning terms from the strong focusing and strong sextupoles required for an ultralow emittance. Taking the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) as an example and through statistical analysis, we found that the horizontal HIRs have stronger impact on dynamics than the vertical ones; and the probability of MA reduction caused by a HIR is closely correlated with the level of the beta beats at the same plane, but indep…
This letter reports the successful use of feedback from a spin polarization measurement to the revolution frequency of a 0.97 GeV/$c$ bunched and polarized deuteron beam in the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) storage ring in order to control both the precession rate ($\approx 121$ kHz) and the phase of the horizontal polarization component. Real time synchronization with a radio frequency (rf) solenoid made possible the rotation of the polarization out of the horizontal plane, yielding a demonstration of the feedback method to manipulate the polarization. In particular, the rotation rate shows a sin…
We propose a method to simultaneously correct linear optics errors and linear coupling for storage rings using turn-by-turn (TbT) beam position monitor (BPM) data. The independent component analysis (ICA) method is used to isolate the betatron normal modes from the measured TbT BPM data. The betatron amplitudes and phase advances of the projections of the normal modes on the horizontal and vertical planes are then extracted, which, combined with dispersion measurement, are used to fit the lattice model. The fitting results are used for lattice correction. The method has been successfully demon…
We introduce a new application of measuring symplectic generators to characterize and control the linear betatron coupling in storage rings. From synchronized and consecutive BPM (Beam Position Monitor) turn-by-turn (TbT) readings, symplectic Lie generators describing the coupled linear dynamics are extracted. Four plane-crossing terms in the generators directly characterize the coupling between the horizontal and the vertical planes. Coupling control can be accomplished by utilizing the dependency of these plane-crossing terms on skew quadrupoles. The method has been successfully demonstrated…
In order to improve the stability of synchrotron radiation, we developed a new method of machine learning-based closed orbit feedback and piloted it in the storage ring of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF). In our experiments, not only can the machine learning-based closed orbit feedback carry out horizontal, vertical and RF frequency feedback simultaneously, but it also has better convergence and convergence speed than the traditional Slow Orbit Feed Back (SOFB) system. What's more, the residual values of the correctors' currents variations after correction can be almost igno…
The effects of synchrotron radiation on particle motion in storage rings are discussed. In the absence of radiation, particle motion is symplectic, and the beam emittances are conserved. The inclusion of radiation effects in a classical approximation leads to emittance damping: expressions for the damping times are derived. Then, it is shown that quantum radiation effects lead to excitation of the beam emittances. General expressions for the equilibrium longitudinal and horizontal (natural) emittances are derived. The impact of lattice design on the natural emittance is discussed, with particu…
The lifetime of a stored beam due to the Touschek effect is calculated for arbitrary ratios of beam height to beam width. A variation of the beam envelopes is taken into account, i.e. the derivatives of the horizontal and vertical amplitude functions and dispersions are included. The calculation is done for arbitrary energies in the rest frame of the colliding particles.
The method is based on four fundamental features. The total spin precession frequency in the vertical plane due to the electric and magnetic dipole moments in an imperfect ring in a vertical plane is measured. The position of the ring elements is unchanged from clockwise to counter-clockwise operation. The calibration of the effective Lorentz factor using the polarization precession frequency measurement in the horizontal plane is carried out alternately in each CW and CCW operation. And the approximate relationship between the frequencies of the polarization precession in different planes is …
This paper reports the first simultaneous measurement of the horizontal and vertical components of the polarization vector in a storage ring under the influence of a radio frequency (rf) solenoid. The experiments were performed at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY in Jülich using a vector polarized, bunched $0.97\,\textrm{GeV/c}$ deuteron beam. Using the new spin feedback system, we set the initial phase difference between the solenoid field and the precession of the polarization vector to a predefined value. The feedback system was then switched off, allowing the phase difference to change over tim…
A resonance method of measuring the electric dipole moment (EDM) of nuclei in storage rings is described, based on two new ideas: (1) Oscillating particles' velocities in resonance with spin precession, and (2) alternately producing two sub-beams with different betatron tunes--one sub-beam to amplify and thus make it easier to correct ring imperfections that produce false signals imitating EDM signals, and the other to make the EDM measurement.
This paper describes a time-marking system that enables a measurement of the in-plane (horizontal) polarization of a 0.97-GeV/c deuteron beam circulating in the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) at the Forschungszentrum Jülich. The clock time of each polarimeter event is used to unfold the 120-kHz spin precession and assign events to bins according to the direction of the horizontal polarization. After accumulation for one or more seconds, the down-up scattering asymmetry can be calculated for each direction and matched to a sinusoidal function whose magnitude is proportional to the horizontal polariz…
A new algorithm to perform coherent mode decomposition of the undulator radiation is proposed. It is based in separating the horizontal and vertical directions, reducing the problem by working with one-dimension wavefronts. The validity conditions of this approximation are discussed. Simulations require low computer resources, and run interactively in a laptop. We study the focusing with lenses of the radiation emitted by an undulator in a fourth-generation storage ring (EBS-ESRF). Results are compared against multiple optics packages implementing a variety of methods for dealing with partial …
This paper reports the first spin tune measurement at high energies (24 GeV and 255 GeV) with a driven coherent spin motion. To maintain polarization in a polarized proton collider, it is important to know the spin tune of the polarized proton beam, which is defined as the number of full spin precessions per revolution. A nine-magnet spin flipper has demonstrated high spin-flip efficiency in the presence of two Siberian snakes [1]. The spin flipper drives a spin resonance with a given frequency (or tune) and strength. When the drive tune is close to the spin tune, the proton spin direction is …
Using calculations and mathematical modeling, we demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a synchrotron storage ring for neutral polar molecules. The lattice is a racetrack type 3.6 m in circumference consisting of two of 180-degree arcs, six bunchers, and two long straight sections. Each straight section contains two triplet focusing lenses and space for beam injection and experiments. The design also includes a matched injector and a linear decelerator. Up to 60 bunches can be loaded and simultaneously stored in the ring. The molecules are injected at 90 m/s but the velocity of the circul…
Time-reversal breaking and parity-conserving millistrong interactions, suggested in 1965, still remain a viable mechanism of CP-violation beyond the Standard Model. One of its possible manifestations is the T-odd asymmetry in the transmission of tensor-polarized deuterons through a vector-polarized hydrogen gas target. Upon the rotation of the deuteron polarization from the vertical direction into the ring plane, the T-odd asymmetries, odd against the reversal of the proton polarization in the target, will continuously oscillate with first or second harmonics of the spin precession frequency. …
The unique global feature of COSY is its ability to accelerate, store and manipulate polarized proton and deuteron beams. In the recent past, these beams have been used primarily for precision measurements, in particular in connection with the study of charged particle EDMs (Electric Dipole Moment) in storage rings. The role of COSY as a R&D facility and for initial (static and oscillating) EDM measurements can hardly be overestimated. Unfortunately, as a consequence of the strategic decisions of Forschungszentrum Jülich and the subsequent "TransFAIR" agreement between FZJ and GSI Darmstadt, i…
The 4 electrode signals of the beam position detector(BPM) of the STORAGE ring of HEFEI Light Source are directly connected to the domestic oscilloscope with 12bit resolution, 10Gsps sampling rate and 2GHz bandwidth. The acquisition program is run on the cloud host under the Zstack architecture, triggering to read a group of waveforms of 500us each time. The X (horizontal position), Y (vertical position) and Z (longitudinal phase) information of the centroid of 45 bunches 2266 cycles were extracted. The resolution of X and Y of each bunches was about 5um, and the resolution of Z was about 0.5p…
This project exploits charged particles confined as a storage ring beam (proton, deuteron, possibly $^3$He) to search for an intrinsic electric dipole moment (EDM, $\vec d$) aligned along the particle spin axis. Statistical sensitivities can approach $10^{-29}$~e$\cdot$cm. The challenge will be to reduce systematic errors to similar levels. The ring will be adjusted to preserve the spin polarization, initially parallel to the particle velocity, for times in excess of 15 minutes. Large radial electric fields, acting through the EDM, will rotate the polarization ($\vec d \times\vec E$). The slow…
Precision experiments, such as the search for electric dipole moments of charged particles using storage rings, demand for an understanding of the spin dynamics with unprecedented accuracy. The ultimate aim is to measure the electric dipole moments with a sensitivity up to 15 orders in magnitude better than the magnetic dipole moment of the stored particles. This formidable task requires an understanding of the background to the signal of the electric dipole from rotations of the spins in the spurious magnetic fields of a storage ring. One of the observables, especially sensitive to the imperf…
