The paper presents a novel method for designing an optimal controller for discrete-time switched linear systems. The problem is formulated as one of computing the discrete mode sequence and the continuous input sequence that jointly minimize a quadratic performance index. State-of-art methods for solving such a control problem suffer in general from a high computational requirement due to the fact that an exponential number of switching sequences must be explored. The method of this paper addresses the challenge of the switching law design by introducing auxiliary continuous input variables and then solving a non-smooth block-sparsity inducing optimization problem.

This paper proposes a new framework for constructing interval-valued state estimators for discrete-time linear and switched linear systems. Our main results are (i) the derivation of the tightest interval-valued estimator for linear discrete-time systems; (ii) a systematic design method for interval-valued state estimators; (iii) an application of the proposed estimation framework to switched linear systems.
This paper addresses the stability problem for discrete-time switched systems under autonomous switching. Each mode of the switched system is modeled as a Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) system, the time-varying parameters can vary arbitrarily fast and are represented in a polytopic form. The Lyapunov theory is employed to get new conditions in the form of parameter-dependent LMIs. The constructed Lyapunov function takes advantage of using an augmented state vector with shifted states in its construction. In this sense, the Lyapunov function employed in this paper can be viewed as a discrete-ti…
In this paper, we introduce a compositional method for the construction of finite abstractions of interconnected discrete-time switched systems. Particularly, we use a notion of so-called alternating simulation function as a relation between each switched subsystem and its finite abstraction. Based on some small-gain type conditions, we use those alternating simulation functions to construct compositionally an overall alternating simulation function as a relation between an interconnection of finite abstractions and that of switched subsystems. This overall alternating simulation function allo…
A novel procedure for the online identification of a class of discrete-time switched linear systems, which simultaneously estimates the parameters and switching manifolds of the systems, is proposed in this paper. Firstly, to estimate the parameters of the subsystems, a discrete-time concurrent learning-based recursive parameter estimator is designed to guarantee the exponential convergence of the estimation errors to zero. Secondly, as an assistant procedure of the identification framework, an online switching detection method is proposed by making use of the history stacks produced by the co…
Most modern control systems are switched, meaning they have continuous as well as discrete decision variables. Switched systems often have constraints called dwell-time constraints (e.g., cycling constraints in a heat pump) on the switching rate. This paper introduces an embedding-based-method to solve optimal control problems that have both discrete and continuous decision variables. Unlike existing methods, the developed technique can heuristically incorporate dwell-time constraints via an auxiliary cost, while also preserving other state and control constrains of the problem. Simulations re…
This paper deals with the stability analysis problem of discrete-time switched linear systems with ranged dwell time. A novel concept called L-switching-cycle is proposed, which contains sequences of multiple activation cycles satisfying the prescribed ranged dwell time constraint. Based on L-switching-cycle, two sufficient conditions are proposed to ensure the global uniform asymptotic stability of discrete-time switched linear systems. It is noted that two conditions are equivalent in stability analysis with the same $L$-switching-cycle. These two sufficient conditions can be viewed as gener…

We present an algorithm to compute stabilizing minimum dwell times for discrete-time switched linear systems without the explicit knowledge of state-space models of their subsystems. Given a set of finite traces of state trajectories of the subsystems that satisfies certain properties, our algorithm involves the following tasks: first, multiple Lyapunov functions are designed from the given data; second, a set of relevant scalars is computed from these functions; and third, a stabilizing minimum dwell time is determined as a function of these scalars. A numerical example is presented to demons…
In this paper, we present a methodology to identify discrete-time state-space switched linear systems (SLSs) from input-output measurements. Continuous-state is not assumed to be measured. The key step is a deadbeat observer based transformation to a switched auto-regressive with exogenous input (SARX) model. This transformation reduces the state-space identification problem to a SARX model estimation problem. Overfitting issues are tackled. The switch and parameter identifiability and the persistence of excitation conditions on the inputs are discussed in detail. The discrete-states are ident…
In this paper, we develop a compositional scheme for the construction of continuous approximations for interconnections of infinitely many discrete-time switched systems. An approximation (also known as abstraction) is itself a continuous-space system, which can be used as a replacement of the original (also known as concrete) system in a controller design process. Having designed a controller for the abstract system, it is refined to a more detailed one for the concrete system. We use the notion of so-called simulation functions to quantify the mismatch between the original system and its app…
This paper deals with stability of discrete-time switched linear systems whose all subsystems are unstable and the set of admissible switching signals obeys pre-specified restrictions on switches between the subsystems and dwell times on the subsystems. We derive sufficient conditions on the subsystems matrices such that a switched system is globally exponentially stable under a set of purely time-dependent switching signals that obeys the given restrictions. The main apparatuses for our analysis are (matrix) commutation relations between certain products of the subsystems matrices and graph-t…
Originating in the artificial intelligence literature, optimistic planning (OP) is an algorithm that generates near-optimal control inputs for generic nonlinear discrete-time systems whose input set is finite. This technique is therefore relevant for the near-optimal control of nonlinear switched systems, for which the switching signal is the control. However, OP exhibits several limitations, which prevent its application in a standard control context. First, it requires the stage cost to take values in [0,1], an unnatural prerequisite as it excludes, for instance, quadratic stage costs. Secon…
This paper deals with stability of discrete-time switched linear systems whose all subsystems are unstable. We present sufficient conditions on the subsystems matrices such that a switched system is globally exponentially stable under a set of purely time-dependent switching signals that are allowed to activate all subsystems. The main apparatuses for our analysis are (matrix) commutation relations between certain products of the subsystems matrices and graph-theoretic arguments. We present a numerical experiment to demonstrate our results.
The design of decision and control strategies for switched systems typically requires complete knowledge of (i) mathematical models of the subsystems and (ii) restrictions on admissible switches between the subsystems. We propose an active learning algorithm that infers (i) and (ii) for discrete-time switched systems whose subsystems dynamics are governed by sets of scalar polynomials and switching signals are constrained by automata. We collect data from gray-box simulation models of the switched systems for this purpose. Our technique for learning (i) involves linear algebraic tools, while f…

This paper deals with stabilization of discrete-time switched linear systems when explicit knowledge of the state-space models of their subsystems is not available. Given the set of admissible switches between the subsystems, the admissible dwell times on the subsystems and a set of finite traces of state trajectories of the subsystems that satisfies certain properties, we devise an algorithm that designs periodic switching logics which preserve stability of the resulting switched system. We combine two ingredients: (a) data-based stability analysis of discrete-time linear systems and (b) mult…
Optimal tracking in switched systems with controlled subsystem and Discrete-time (DT) dynamics is investigated. A feedback control policy is generated such that a) the system tracks the desired reference signal, and b) the optimal switching time instants are sought. For finding the optimal solution, approximate dynamic programming is used. Simulation results are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the solution.
Switched-actuator systems with setup times (SAcSSs) are systems in which the actuator configuration has to be switched during operation, and where the switching induces non-negligible actuator downtime. Optimally controlling SAcSSs requires the online solving of both a discrete actuator allocation problem, in which the switch-induced actuator downtime is taken into account, as well as an optimization problem for the (typically continuous) control inputs. Mixed-integer model predictive control (MI-MPC) offers a powerful framework for tackling such problems. However, the efficient modeling of SA…
We consider discrete-time switching systems composed of a finite family of affine sub-dynamics. First, we recall existing results and present further analysis on the stability problem, the existence and characterization of compact attractors, and the relations these problems have with the joint spectral radius of the set of matrices composing the linear part of the subsystems. Second, we tackle the problem of providing probabilistic certificates of stability along with the existence of forward invariant sets, assuming no knowledge on the system data but only observing a finite number of sample…
We study the synthesis of mode switching protocols for a class of discrete-time switched linear systems in which the mode jumps are governed by Markov decision processes (MDPs). We call such systems MDP-JLS for brevity. Each state of the MDP corresponds to a mode in the switched system. The probabilistic state transitions in the MDP represent the mode transitions. We focus on finding a policy that selects the switching actions at each mode such that the switched system that follows these actions is guaranteed to be stable. Given a policy in the MDP, the considered MDP-JLS reduces to a Markov j…
Peak estimation bounds extreme values of a function of state along trajectories of a dynamical system. This paper focuses on extending peak estimation to continuous and discrete settings with time-independent and time-dependent uncertainty. Techniques from optimal control are used to incorporate uncertainty into an existing occupation measure-based peak estimation framework, which includes special consideration for handling switching uncertainties. The resulting infinite-dimensional linear programs can be solved approximately with Linear Matrix Inequalities arising from the moment-SOS hierarch…
In this technical note, a recursive set-membership filtering algorithm for discrete-time nonlinear dynamical systems subject to unknown but bounded process and measurement noises is proposed. The nonlinear dynamics is represented in a pseudo-linear form using the state dependent coefficient (SDC) parameterization. Matrix Taylor expansions are utilized to expand the state dependent matrices about the state estimates. Upper bounds on the norms of remainders in the matrix Taylor expansions are calculated on-line using a non-adaptive random search algorithm at each time step. Utilizing these upper…
Motivated by the goal of learning controllers for complex systems whose dynamics change over time, we consider the problem of designing control laws for systems that switch among a finite set of unknown discrete-time linear subsystems under unknown switching signals. To this end, we propose a method that uses data to directly design a control mechanism without any explicit identification step. Our approach is online, meaning that the data are collected over time while the system is evolving in closed-loop, and are directly used to iteratively update the controller. A major benefit of the propo…
