Taking into account the current global information on neutrino oscillation parameters we forecast the capabilities of future long baseline experiments such as DUNE and T2HK in settling the atmospheric octant puzzle. We find that a good measurement of the reactor angle $θ_{13}$ plays a key role in fixing the octant of the atmospheric angle $θ_{23}$ with such future accelerator neutrino studies.
We have explored the possibilities of resolving the $θ_{23}$ octant degeneracy present in the newly planned Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) by combining reactor data. Reactor experiments have already measured the third mixing angle $θ_{13}$ very precisely and this precise measurenent of $θ_{13}$ in turn helps in $θ_{23}$ octant measurement. We have examined the octant sensitivity with and without reactor data and it improves if reactor data is added. The comparative study of octant sensitivities of 10kt and 35kt liquid argon Far Detectors, with and without the Near Detector, reveals t…
Long baseline Experiment (LBL) have promised to be a very powerful experimental set up to study various issues related to Neutrinos. Some ongoing and planned LBL and medium baseline experiments are - T2K, MINOS, NOvA, LBNE, LBNO etc. But the long baseline experiments are crippled due to presence of some parameter degeneracies, like the Octant degeneracy. In this work, we first show the presence of Octant degeneracy in LBL experiments, and then combine it with Daya Bay Reactor experiment, at different values of CP violation phase. We show that the Octant degeneracy in LBNE can be resolved compl…
We explore the prospects of determining the octant of $θ_{23}$ with atmospheric neutrinos at PINGU. We study in detail the impact of energy and angle resolutions of the neutrino on the octant sensitivity. We show that the systematic uncertainties on the atmospheric neutrino flux predictions, especially the ones which affect the energy and zenith angle spectrum of the neutrinos, make a rather drastic reduction of the sensitivity of PINGU. We also study the prospects of measuring the octant of $θ_{23}$ in the long baseline experiments T2K and NOvA in conjunction with the reactor experiments. We …
We discuss how and to what extent the degeneracy associated with theta(23), if it's not maximal, can be resolved by future oscillation experiments which utilize conventional neutrino beam from accelerator and/or reactor neutrinos.
One of the most robust relationships predicted by binary tetrahedral ($T^{'}$) flavor symmetry relates the reactor neutrino angle $θ_{13}$ to the atmospheric neutrino angle $θ_{23}$, independently of $θ_{12}$. It has the form $θ_{13} = \sqrt{2} |\fracπ{4} - θ_{23}|$. When this prediction first appeared in 2008, $θ_{13}$ was consistent with zero and $θ_{23}$ with $π/4$. Non-zero $θ_{13}$ was established by Daya Bay in 2012. Non-zero $|\fracπ{4}-θ_{23}|$ is now favored by the NO$ν$A experiment and, for $θ_{23}$, the aforementioned $T^{'}$ relation selects the second octant ($θ_{23} > \fracπ{4}$)…
Preliminary results of MINOS experiment indicate that theta23 is not maximal. Global fits to world neutrino data suggest two nearly degenerate solutions for theta23: one in the lower octant (LO: theta23 < 45 degree) and the other in the higher octant (HO: theta23 > 45 degree). numu to nue oscillations in superbeam experiments are sensitive to the octant and are capable of resolving this degeneracy. We study the prospects of this resolution by the current T2K and upcoming NOvA experiments. Because of the hierarchy-deltacp degeneracy and the octant-deltacp degeneracy, the impact of hierarchy on …
If the lepton mixing angle theta_{23} is not maximal, there arises a problem of ambiguity in determining theta_{23} due to the existence of two degenerate solutions, one in the first and the other in the second octant. We discuss an experimental strategy for resolving the theta_{23} octant degeneracy by combining reactor measurement of theta_{13} with accelerator nu_{mu} disappearance and nu_{e} appearance experiments. The robustness of the theta_{23} degeneracy and the difficulty in lifting it only by accelerator experiments with conventional nu_{mu} (and nu_{mu}-bar) beam are demonstrated by…
We performed a simulation on the DUNE experiment to probe the capability of future neutrino long-baseline experiments' ability to constrain the parameter space of high-energy models by using the correlation between the atmospheric and reactor mixing angles. As an example, we took the Tetrahedral Flavour Symmetry model, which predicts a strong relation between the non-zero value of $θ_{13}$ and deviation of $θ_{23}$ from the maximality. We show that in this case, the model can realistically be excluded in more than $3σ$ for most of the parameter space. We also study the octant degeneracy at DUN…
One of the unknown parameters in neutrino oscillations is the octant of the mixing angle theta_{23}. In this paper, we discuss the possibility of determining the octant of theta_{23} in the long baseline experiments T2K and NOvA in conjunction with future atmospheric neutrino detectors, in light of non-zero value of theta_{13} measured by reactor experiments. We consider two detector technologies for atmospheric neutrinos - magnetized iron calorimeter and non-magnetized Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber. We present the octant sensitivity for T2K/NOvA and atmospheric neutrino experiments sep…
In a recent work by us, we have studied, how CP violation discovery potential can be improved at long baseline neutrino experiments (LBNE/DUNE), by combining with its ND (near detector) and reactor experiments. In this work, we discuss how this study can be further analysed to resolve entanglement of the quadrant of leptonic CPV phase and Octant of atmospheric mixing angle $ θ_{23} $, at LBNEs. The study is done for both NH (Normal hierarchy) and IH (Inverted hierarchy), HO (Higher Octant) and LO (Lower Octant). We show how baryogenesis can enhance the effect of resolving this entanglement, an…
According to the recent results of the neutrino oscillation experiment MINOS, the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{23}$ may not be maximal ($45^{\circ}$). Two nearly degenerate solutions are possible, one in the lower octant (LO) where $θ_{23}<45^{\circ}$, and one in the higher octant (HO) where $θ_{23}>45^{\circ}$. Long baseline experiments measuring the $ν_μ\rightarrowν_{e}$ are capable of resolving this degeneracy. In this work we study the potential of the planned European LBNO experiment to distinguish between the LO and HO solutions.
We point out that the observed neutrino mixing pattern at low energies is very likely to originate from the 3 times 3 lepton flavor mixing matrix U which possesses the exact mu-tau permutation symmetry |U_{mu i}| = |U_{tau i}| (for i=1,2,3) at a superhigh energy scale Lambda_{mu tau} \sim 10^{14} GeV. The deviation of theta_{23} from 45^\circ and that of delta from 270^\circ in the standard parametrization of U are therefore a natural consequence of small mu-tau symmetry breaking via the renormalization-group equations (RGEs) running from Lambda_{mu tau} down to the electroweak scale Lambda_{E…
In the presence of Non-Standard neutral current Interactions (NSI) a new solution to solar neutrino anomaly with $\cos 2θ_{12}<0$ appears. We investigate how this solution can be tested by upcoming intermediate baseline reactor experiments, JUNO and RENO-50. We point out a degeneracy between the two solutions when both hierarchy and the $θ_{12}$ octant are flipped. We then comment on how this degeneracy can be partially lifted by long baseline experiments sensitive to matter effects such as the NOvA experiment.
The moderately large value of $\ty$, measured recently by reactor experiments, is very welcome news for the future neutrino experiments. In particular, the \nova experiment, with 3 years each of $ν$ and $\anu$ runs, will be able to determine the mass hierarchy if one of the following two favourable combinations is true: normal hierarchy with $-180^\circ \leq \dcp \leq 0$ or inverted hierarchy with $0\leq \dcp \leq 180^\circ$. In this report, we study the hierarchy reach of the first 3 years of \nova data. Since $\sin^2 2 \tz$ is measured to be non-maximal, $\tz$ can be either in the lower or h…
We investigate the implications of a sterile neutrino on the physics potential of the proposed experiment DUNE and future runs of NO$ν$A using latest NO$ν$A results. Using combined analysis of the disappearance and appearance data, NO$ν$A reported preferred solutions at normal hierarchy (NH) with two degenerate best-fit points one in the lower octant (LO) and $δ_{13}$ = 1.48$π$ and other in higher octant (HO) and $δ_{13}$ = 0.74$π$. Another solution of inverted hierarchy (IH) which is 0.46$σ$ away from best fit was also reported. We discuss chances of resolving these degeneracies in the presen…
We present a model of neutrino mixing based on the flavour group $Δ(27)$ in order to account for the observation of a non-zero reactor mixing angle ($θ_{13}$). The model provides a common flavour structure for the charged-lepton and the neutrino sectors, giving their mass matrices a `circulant-plus-diagonal' form. Mass matrices of this form readily lead to mixing patterns with realistic deviations from tribimaximal mixing, including non-zero $θ_{13}$. With the parameters constrained by existing measurements, our model predicts an inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. We obtain two distinct sets of…
The KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino experiment (KATRIN) combines an ultra-luminous molecular tritium source with an integrating high-resolution spectrometer to gain sensitivity to the absolute mass scale of neutrinos. The projected sensitivity of the experiment on the electron neutrino mass is 200 meV at 90% C.L. With such unprecedented resolution, the experiment is also sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model, particularly to the existence of additional sterile neutrinos at the eV mass scale. A recent analysis of available reactor data appears to favor the existence of such such a sterile n…
We suggest a minimal extension of the simplest A4 flavour model that can induce a nonzero theta13 value, as required by recent neutrino oscillation data from reactors and accelerators. The predicted correlation between the atmospheric mixing angle theta23 and the magnitude of theta13 leads to an allowed region substantially smaller than indicated by neutrino oscillation global fits. Moreover, the scheme correlates CP violation in neutrino oscillations with the octant of the atmospheric mixing parameter theta23 in such a way that, for example, maximal mixing necessarily violates CP. We briefly …
We perform a combined fit to global neutrino oscillation data available as of fall 2016 in the scenario of three-neutrino oscillations and present updated allowed ranges of the six oscillation parameters. We discuss the differences arising between the consistent combination of the data samples from accelerator and reactor experiments compared to partial combinations. We quantify the confidence in the determination of the less precisely known parameters $θ_{23}$, $δ_\text{CP}$, and the neutrino mass ordering by performing a Monte Carlo study of the long baseline accelerator and reactor data. We…
In presence of non standard interactions, the solar neutrino data is consistent with two solutions, one close to the standard LMA solution with $\sin^2θ_{12} \simeq 0.3$ and another with $\sin^2θ_{12}^D \simeq 0.7(=\cos^2θ_{12})$. The latter has been called the Dark LMA (DLMA) solution in the literature. This issue is hard to resolve via oscillations because of the existence of the so-called "generalised mass hierarchy" degeneracy of the neutrino mass matrix in presence of NSI. However, if the mass hierarchy is independently determined in a non-oscillation experiment such as neutrino-less doub…
We present an up-to-date global analysis of solar, atmospheric, reactor, and accelerator neutrino data in the framework of three-neutrino oscillations. We provide results on the determination of theta_13 from global data and discuss the dependence on the choice of reactor fluxes. We study in detail the statistical significance of a possible deviation of theta_23 from maximal mixing, the determination of its octant, the ordering of the mass states, and the sensitivity to the CP violating phase, and discuss the role of various complementary data sets in those respects.
Recent measurements of large theta_{13} by Daya Bay and RENO reactor experiments have opened up the possibility of determining the neutrino mass hierarchy, i.e. the sign of the mass squared splitting Delta m_{31}^2, the CP-violating phase delta_{CP} and the octant of theta_{23}. In the light of this result, we study the performance of a low energy neutrino factory (LENF) for determination of the mass hierarchy. In particular, we explore the potential of the nu_e$ and barν_e disappearance channels at LENF to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy, that is free from the uncertainties arising from…
We have shown in a previous paper that two identical detectors with each fiducial mass of 0.27 megaton water, one in Kamioka and the other in Korea, which receive the (anti-) muon neutrino beam of 4 MW power from J-PARC facility have potential of determining the neutrino mass hierarchy and discovering CP violation by resolving the degeneracies associated with them. In this paper, we point out that the same setting has capability of resolving the θ_{23} octant degeneracy in region where sin^2 2θ_{23} \lsim 0.97 at 2 standard deviation confidence level even for very small values of θ_{13}. Altog…
I try to give an overview of future prospects of the experimental exploration of the unknowns in the neutrino mass pattern and the lepton flavor mixing. Because of the nature of the lectures on which this manuscript is based, I give some pedagogical discussions to prepare for the presentation in the later part. I start from measuring θ_{13} by reactors and accelerators as a prerequisite for proceeding to search for leptonic CP violation. I then discuss how CP violation can be uncovered, and how the neutrino mass hierarchy can be determined. I do these by resolving so called the ``parameter deg…
In this work we show that the physics reach of a long-baseline (LBL) neutrino oscillation experiment based on a superbeam and a megaton water Cherenkov detector can be significantly increased if the LBL data are combined with data from atmospheric neutrinos (ATM) provided by the same detector. ATM data are sensitive to the octant of $θ_{23}$ and to the type of the neutrino mass hierarchy, mainly through three-flavor effects in e-like events. This allows to resolve the so-called $θ_{23}$- and sign($Δm^2_{31}$)-parameter degeneracies in LBL data. As a consequence it becomes possible to distingui…

In the presence of non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI), a degeneracy exists in neutrino oscillation data, which involves the flipping of the octant of the mixing angle ${θ_{12}}$ and the type of the neutrino mass ordering. In this article, we revisit the status of this degeneracy in the light of recent data on coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$ν$NS) from the COHERENT experiment. For general relative couplings to up and down quarks, the degeneracy is disfavoured at the $2σ$ level by the latest data but remains at a higher confidence level. We investigate the requirements of …
We explore the complementarity between terrestrial neutrino oscillation experiments and astrophysical/cosmological measurements in probing the existence of sterile neutrinos. We find that upcoming accelerator neutrino experiments will not improve on constraints by the time they are operational, but that reactor experiments can already probe parameter space beyond the reach of Planck. We emphasize the tension between cosmological experiments and reactor antineutrino experiments and enumerate several possibilities for resolving this tension.
We discuss the possible impact of astrophysical neutrino flux measurements at neutrino telescopes on the neutrino oscillation program of reactor experiments and neutrino beams. We consider neutrino fluxes from neutron sources, muon damped sources, and pion sources, where we parameterize the input from these sources in terms of the flux ratio $R=ϕ_μ/(ϕ_e+ϕ_τ)$ which can be extracted from the muon track to shower ratio in a neutrino telescope. While it is difficult to obtain any information from this ratio alone, we demonstrate that the dependence on the oscillation parameters is very complement…
We present a global analysis of solar, atmospheric, reactor and accelerator neutrino data in the framework of three-neutrino oscillations based on data available in summer 2014. We provide the allowed ranges of the six oscillation parameters and show that their determination is stable with respect to uncertainties related to reactor neutrino and solar neutrino flux predictions. We find that the maximal possible value of the Jarlskog invariant in the lepton sector is $0.0329 \pm 0.0009$ ($\pm 0.0027$) at the $1σ$ ($3σ$) level and we use leptonic unitarity triangles to illustrate the ability of …
We study the neutrino oscillation physics performance of the Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) in various configurations. In particular, we compare the case of a surface detector at the far site augmented by a near detector, to that with the far site detector placed deep underground but no near detector. In the latter case, information from atmospheric neutrino events is also utilized. For values of θ_{13} favored by reactor experiments and a 100 kt-yr exposure, we find roughly equivalent sensitivities to the neutrino mass hierarchy, the octant of θ_{23}, and to CP violation. We also fi…
We investigate the performance of T2HK in the presence of a light eV scale sterile neutrino. We study in detail its influence in resolving fundamental issues like mass hierarchy, CP-violation (CPV) induced by the standard CP-phase $δ_{13}$ and new CP-phase $δ_{14}$, and the octant ambiguity of $θ_{23}$. We show for the first time in detail that due to the impressive energy reconstruction capabilities of T2HK, the available spectral information plays an important role to enhance the mass hierarchy discovery reach of this experiment in 3$ν$ framework and also to keep it almost intact even in $4ν…
We propose a model of quark and lepton mixing based on the tetrahedral A(4) family symmetry with quark-lepton unification via the tetra-colour Pati-Salam gauge group SU(4)_{PS}, together with SU(2)_L x U(1)_R. The "tetra-model" solves many of the flavour puzzles and remarkably gives ten predictions at leading order, including all six PMNS parameters. The Cabibbo angle is approximately given by 1/4, due to the tetra-vacuum alignment (1,4,2), providing the Cabibbo connection between quark and lepton mixing. Higher order corrections are responsible for the smaller quark mixing angles and CP viola…
The measurement of the deviation of the 2-3 leptonic mixing from maximal, D_23 = 1/2 - sin^2(theta_23), is one of the key issues for understanding the origin of the neutrino masses and mixing. In the three-neutrino context we study the dependence of various observables in the atmospheric neutrinos on D_23. We perform a global three-neutrino analysis of the atmospheric and reactor neutrino data taking into account the effects of both the oscillations driven by the "solar" parameters (Delta_m_21^2 and theta_12) and the 1-3 mixing. The departure from the one-dominant mass scale approximation resu…
We present a new global fit of neutrino oscillation parameters within the simplest three-neutrino picture, including new data which appeared since our previous analysis~\cite{Forero:2014bxa}. In this update we include new long-baseline neutrino data involving the antineutrino channel in T2K, as well as new data in the neutrino channel, data from NO$ν$A, as well as new reactor data, such as the Daya Bay 1230 days electron antineutrino disappearance spectrum data and the 1500 live days prompt spectrum from RENO, as well as new Double Chooz data. We also include atmospheric neutrino data from the…
A review of accelerator long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments is provided, including all experiments performed to date and the projected sensitivity of those currently in progress. Accelerator experiments have played a crucial role in the confirmation of the neutrino oscillation phenomenon and in precision measurements of the parameters. With a fixed baseline and detectors providing good energy resolution, precise measurements of the ratio of distance/energy (L/E) on the scale of individual events have been made and the expected oscillatory pattern resolved. Evidence for electron neut…
We develop a general theoretical framework to analytically disentangle the contributions of the neutrino mass hierarchy, the atmospheric mixing angle, and the CP phase, in neutrino oscillations. To illustrate the usefulness of this framework, especially that it can serve as a complementary tool to neutrino oscillogram in the study of atmospheric neutrino oscillations, we take PINGU as an example and compute muon- and electron-like event rates with event cuts on neutrino energy and zenith angle. Under the assumption of exact momentum measurements of neutrinos with a perfect e-$μ$ identification…
Within the standard LCDM model of cosmology, the recent Planck measurements have shown discrepancies with other observations, e.g., measurements of the current expansion rate H_0, the galaxy shear power spectrum and counts of galaxy clusters. We show that if LCDM is extended by a hot dark matter component, which could be interpreted as a sterile neutrino, the data sets can be combined consistently. A combination of Planck data, WMAP-9 polarisation data, measurements of the BAO scale, the HST measurement of H_0, Planck galaxy cluster counts and galaxy shear data from the CFHTLens survey yields …
The phenomenological consequences of the residual Z^s_2 and Zbar^s_2 symmetries are explored in detail. With a precisely measured value of the reactor angle, these two residual symmetries predict distinct distributions for the Dirac CP phase and the atmospheric angle, which leads to the possibility of identifying them at neutrino experiments. For both symmetries, it is possible to resolve the neutrino mass hierarchy in most of the parameter space, and they can be distinguished from one another if the true residual symmetry is Z^s_2 and the atmospheric angle is non-maximal. These results are ob…
In this paper we study the synergy among the future accelerator (T2HK), future atmospheric (ICAL) and future reactor (JUNO) neutrino experiments to determine the neutrino mass ordering. T2HK can measure the mass ordering only for favorable values of $δ_{\rm CP}$, whereas the mass ordering sensitivity of JUNO is dependent on the energy resolution. Our results show that with a combination of T2HK, ICAL and JUNO one can have a mass ordering sensitivity of 7.2 $σ$ even for the unfavorable value of $δ_{\rm CP} = 0^\circ$ for T2HK and most conservative value of JUNO energy resolution of 5$\%/\sqrt{E…
Recent encouraging experimental results on neutrino mixing parameters prompt further investigation on $SO(10)$-inspired leptogenesis and on the associated strong thermal solution that has correctly predicted a non-vanishing reactor mixing angle, it further predicts $\sinδ\lesssim 0$, now supported by recent results at $\sim 95\%$ C.L., normally ordered neutrino masses and atmospheric mixing angle in the first octant, best fit results in latest global analyses. Extending a recent analytical procedure, we account for the mismatch between the Yukawa basis and the weak basis, that in $SO(10)$-insp…
We present an updated global fit of neutrino oscillation data in the simplest three-neutrino framework. In the present study we include up-to-date analyses from a number of experiments. Concerning the atmospheric and solar sectors, we give updated analyses of DeepCore and SNO data, respectively. We have also included the latest electron antineutrino data collected by the Daya Bay and RENO reactor experiments, and the long-baseline T2K and NO$ν$A measurements. These new analyses result in more accurate measurements of $θ_{13}$, $θ_{12}$, $Δm_{21}^2$ and $|Δm_{31}^2|$. The best fit value for the…
We discuss, in the context of precision measurement of Delta m^2_{31} and theta_{13}, physics capabilities enabled by the recoilless resonant absorption of monochromatic antineutrino beam enhanced by the Mössbauer effect recently proposed by Raghavan. Under the assumption of small relative systematic error of a few tenth of percent level between measurement at different detector locations, we give analytical and numerical estimates of the sensitivities to Delta m^2_{31} and sin^2 2theta_{13}. The accuracies of determination of them are enormous; The fractional uncertainty in Delta m^2_{31} ach…
Neutrino physics is an experimentally driven field. So, we investigate the different detection techniques available in the literature and study the various neutrino oscillation experiments in a chronological manner. Our primary focus is on the construction and detection mechanisms of each experiment. Today, we know a lot about this mysterious ghostly particle by performing different experiments at different times with different neutrino sources viz. solar, atmospheric, reactor, accelerators and high energy astrophysical; and they have contributed in the determination of neutrino parameters. Ye…
Current neutrino experiments measure the neutrino mixing parameters with an unprecedented accuracy. The upcoming generation of experiments will be sensitive to subdominant effects that can give information on the unknown neutrino parameters: the Dirac CP-violating phase, the mass ordering and the $θ_{23}$ octant. Determining the exact values of neutrino mass and mixing parameters is crucial to test neutrino models and flavor symmetries. In the first part of this review, we summarize the current status of neutrino oscillation parameters. We consider the most recent data from solar experiments a…
