Multi-messenger astronomy can help to investigate the sources of the high-energy neutrinos observed by the high-energy neutrino telescope IceCube. We consider the hypothesis that the highest energy neutrinos are produced by BL Lacs, arguing that this is not contradicted severely by any known fact. We check the BL Lac hypothesis by searching for correlations between the through-going muon events of IceCube and the BL Lacs of the second catalog of Fermi-LAT (2FHL). We expect 10.2 $\pm$ 2.4 correlated events but we find that just 1 event has a BL Lac as counterpart. We also assess the probability of observing one multiplet from the same source, finding that the present null result is not yet of critical significance. We conclude that the hypothesis that the BL Lacs are the main emitters of the highest-energy neutrinos observed by IceCube is disfavored at 3.7σ. We discuss implications and possible ways out; for example, this could work if the angular resolution was 4°, which is much more than expected.

The Tibet ASgamma experiment just reported their measurement of sub-PeV diffuse gamma ray emission from the Galactic disk, with the highest energy up to 957 TeV. These gamma-rays are most likely the hadronic origin by cosmic ray interaction with interstellar gas in the Galaxy. This measurement provides direct evidence to the hypothesis that the Galactic cosmic rays can be accelerated beyond PeV energies. In this work, we try to explain the sub-PeV diffuse gamma-ray spectrum within cosmic rays diffusive propagation model. We find there is a tension between the sub-PeV diffuse gamma rays and the…

The existence of a "knee" at energy ~1 PeV in the cosmic-ray spectrum suggests the presence of Galactic PeV proton accelerators called "PeVatrons". Supernova Remnant (SNR) G106.3+2.7 is a prime candidate for one of these. The recent detection of very high energy (0.1-100 TeV) gamma rays from G106.3+2.7 may be explained either by the decay of neutral pions or inverse Compton scattering by relativistic electrons. We report an analysis of 12 years of Fermi-LAT gamma-ray data which shows that the GeV-TeV gamma-ray spectrum is much harder and requires a different total electron energy than the radi…
The candidate PeVatron MGRO J1908+06, which shows a hard spectrum beyond 100 TeV, is one of the most peculiar $γ$-ray sources in the Galactic plane. Its complex morphology and some possible counterparts spatially related with the VHE emission region, preclude to distinguish between a hadronic or leptonic nature of the $γ$-ray emission. In this paper we illustrate a new multiwavelength analysis of MGRO J1908+06, with the aim to shed light on its nature and the origin of its ultra high-energy emission. We performed an analysis of the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO molecular line emission demonstrating …
Blazars are potential candidates of cosmic-ray acceleration up to ultrahigh energies ($E\gtrsim10^{18}$ eV). For an efficient cosmic-ray injection from blazars, $pγ$ collisions with the extragalactic background light (EBL) and cosmic microwave background (CMB) can produce neutrino spectrum peaks near PeV and EeV energies, respectively. We analyze the contribution of these neutrinos to the diffuse background measured by the IceCube neutrino observatory. The fraction of neutrino luminosity originating from individual redshift ranges is calculated using the distribution of BL Lacs and FSRQs provi…
Recently, two photons with energy of about 1 PeV have been detected by LHAASO from the Crab nebula, opening an ultra-high energy window for studying the pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). Remarkably, the LHAASO spectrum at the highest-energy end shows a possible hardening, which could indicate the presence of a new component. A two-component scenario with a main electron component and a secondary proton component has been proposed to explain the whole spectrum of the Crab Nebula, requiring a proton energy of $10^{46}-10^{47}{\rm ergs}$ remaining in the present Crab Nebula. In this paper, we study the…

We study possible effects of non-local gravity corrections on the recent discovery by the IceCube collaboration reporting high-energy neutrino flux detected at energies of order PeV. Considering the 4-dimensional operator $\sim y_{αχ}\bar{L_{α}}\, H\, χ$, it is possible to explain both the IceCube neutrino rate and the abundance of Dark Matter, provided that non-local corrections are present in the cosmological background. Furthermore, the mechanism could constitute a natural way to address the $H_0$ tension issue.
Spectrum and Anisotropy of Cosmic Rays at TeV-PeV-energies and Contribution of Nearby Sources
We report here an extension of the measurement of the all-particle cosmic-ray spectrum with IceTop to lower energy. The new measurement gives full coverage of the knee region of the spectrum and reduces the gap in energy between previous IceTop and direct measurements. With a new trigger that selects events in closely spaced detectors in the center of the array, the IceTop energy threshold is lowered by almost an order of magnitude below its previous threshold of 2 PeV. In this paper, we explain how the new trigger is implemented, and we describe the new machine-learning method developed to de…
Multi-band emission from radio to ultra-high energy gamma-rays in the Crab Nebula has been detected. To explain the observed results, non-thermal photon production \textbf{in} the Crab Nebula is carefully studied in a spatially dependent lepto-hadronic model. In our model, the dynamical evolution of the PWN is simulated in a spherically symmetric system. Both electrons and protons are accelerated at the termination shock. The relevant particle propagation equations as well as the photon evolving equation are simultaneously solved. For the Crab Nebula, our results reveal that the observed multi…
There are only few very-high-energy sources in our Galaxy which might accelerate particles up to the knee of the cosmic-ray spectrum. To understand the mechanisms of particle acceleration in these PeVatron candidates, \textit{Fermi}-LAT and H.E.S.S. observations are essential to characterize their $γ$-ray emission. HESS J1640$-$465 and the PeVatron candidate HESS J1641$-$463 are two neighboring (\ang[astroang]{0.25}) $γ$-ray sources, spatially coincident with the radio supernova remnants (SNRs) G338.3$-$0.0 and G338.5+0.1. Detected both by H.E.S.S. and \textit{Fermi}-LAT, we present here a mor…
