To investigate the existence of sterile neutrino, we propose a new neutrino production method using $^{13}$C beams and a $^{9}$Be target for short-baseline electron antineutrino (${\barν}_{e}$) disappearance study. The production of secondary unstable isotopes which can emit neutrinos from the $^{13}$C + $^{9}$Be reaction is calculated with three different nucleus-nucleus (AA) reaction models. Different isotope yields are obtained using these models, but the results of the neutrino flux are found to have unanimous similarities. This feature gives an opportunity to study neutrino oscillation through shape analysis. In this work, expected neutrino flux and event rates are discussed in detail through intensive simulation of the light ion collision reaction and the neutrino flux from the beta decay of unstable isotopes followed by this collision. Together with the reactor and accelerator anomalies, the present proposed ${\barν}_{e}$ source is shown to be a practically alternative test of the existence of the $Δm^{2}$ $\sim$ 1 eV$^{2}$ scale sterile neutrino.
The Reactor Experiment for Neutrino Oscillation (RENO) experiment has been taking data using two identical liquid scintillator detectors of 44.5 tons since August 2011. The experiment has observed the disappearance of reactor neutrinos in their interactions with free protons, followed by neutron capture on hydrogen. Based on 1500 live days of data taken with 16.8 GW$_{th}$ reactors at the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant in Korea, the near (far) detector observes 567690 (90747) electron antineutrino candidate events with a delayed neutron capture on hydrogen. This provides an independent measurement…
The new concept of antineutrino source for future short-baseline experiments is discussed. The source ensures: 1) well defined hard antineutrino flux; 2) the rate of counts more than ~(1E+2 - 1E+3) per day in the detector volume about cubic meter; 3) low level of count errors - < 1%. The proposed source is based on (n,gamma)-activation of 7Li near the reactor active zone and transport of the fast beta-decaying 8Li isotope toward a remote neutrino detector and back in the closed loop. The proposed experiment allows to detect (electron antineutrino, p)-interaction with high precision and directe…
The energy resolution is crucial for the reactor neutrino experiments which aims to determine neutrino mass ordering by precise measurement of the reactor antineutrino energy spectrum. A non-negligible effect in the antineutrino energy resolution is the spread of the kinetic energy of the recoiled neutron and the corresponding positron when detecting the antineutrinos via Inverse Beta-Decay (IBD) reaction. The emission direction of the produced positron in IBD reaction can be used to estimate the kinetic energy of neutron and thus the reconstructed antineutrino energy resolution can be improve…
Antineutrinos stream freely from rapidly decaying fission products within the cores of nuclear reactors and from long-lived natural radioactivity within the rocky layers of the Earth. These global antineutrinos produce detectable signals in large ultra-clear volumes of water- or hydrocarbon-based target liquids, which are viewed by inward-facing photomultiplier tubes. Detected antineutrinos provide information about their shrouded sources and about the fundamental properties of neutrinos themselves. This paper presents the input data, formulae, and plots resulting from the calculations, which,…
T2K is a long baseline neutrino experiment which exploits a neutrino and antineutrino beam at JPARC to perform precision measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters $Δ{\rm m}^2_{\rm 32}$, $\sin^2 θ_{23}$ (besides the CP-violating phase $δ_{\rm CP}$). The latest results for the measurement of PMNS parameters in the disappearance mode are presented here, highlighting the main systematic uncertainties limiting the precision. The future strategy to improve the precision on the measurement of PMNS parameters are also discussed.
We report a novel correlated background in the antineutrino detection using the inverse beta decay reaction. Spontaneous fissions and $(α,n)$ reactions in peripheral materials of the antineutrino detector, such as borosilicate glass of photomultipliers, produce fast neutrons and prompt gamma rays. If the shielding from the material to the detector target were not thick enough, neutrons and gammas could enter the target volume and mimic antineutrino signals. This paper revisits the yields and energy spectra of neutrons produced in B$(α,n)$N and F$(α,n)$Na reactions. A Geant4 based simulation ha…
The Precision Reactor Oscillation and Spectrum Experiment, PROSPECT, is designed to make both a precise measurement of the antineutrino spectrum from a highly-enriched uranium reactor and to probe eV-scale sterile neutrinos by searching for neutrino oscillations over meter-long baselines. PROSPECT utilizes a segmented $^6$Li-doped liquid scintillator detector for both efficient detection of reactor antineutrinos through the inverse beta decay reaction and excellent background discrimination. PROSPECT is a movable 4-ton antineutrino detector covering distances of 7m to 13m from the High Flux Is…
The compact material irradiation facility (CMIF) is a current project in China that will provide a compact deuteron-beryllium neutron source. The target of this facility will be an intense and compact Isotope Decay-At-Rest (IsoDAR) neutrino source. In this paper, we propose to test the sterile neutrino hypothesis using CMIF as the neutrino source. At CMIF platform, the electron antineutrino production rate can be up to $2.0\times 10^{19}$ per day. When paired with an 80 t liquid scintillator detector to study short baseline electron antineutrino disappearance, the inverse beta decay (IBD) even…
