An exact calculation of CaI $λ6439.075$A absorption profiles in the spectra of optical stars in low-mass X-ray binary systems with black holes (BH LMXBs) is carried out. We show that the approximation of a real Roche lobe filling star as disk with uniform local line profile and linear limb darkening law leads to overestimation of projected equatorial rotational velocity $V_{rot} \sin i$ and accordingly, underestimation of mass ratio $q=M_x/M_v$. Refined value of $q$ does not affect the mass of a black hole, but the mass of an optical star has shrunk $\sim 1.5$ times. We present refined components masses in low-mass X-ray binaries with black holes. Companion masses in BH LMXBs are found in the mass range 0.1 - 1.6 $M_{\odot}$ with the peak at $M_v \simeq 0.35 M_{\odot}$. This finding poses additional problem for the standard evolutionary scenarios of BH LMXBs formation with a common envelope phase (CE). We also discuss the implications of these masses into the evolutionary history of the binary.
We have examined the optical/X-ray light curves of seven well-observed recurrent novae, V745 Sco, M31N 2008-12a, LMC N 1968, U Sco, RS Oph, LMC N 2009a, T Pyx, and one recurrent nova candidate LMC N 2012a. Six novae out of the eight show a simple relation that the duration of supersoft X-ray source (SSS) phase is 0.70 times the total duration of the outburst ($=$ X-ray turnoff time), i.e., $t_{\rm SSS}=0.70 t_{\rm off}$, the total duration of which ranges from 10 days to 260 days. These six recurrent novae show a broad rectangular X-ray light curve shape, first half a period of which is highly…
Models have long predicted that the frequency-averaged masses of white dwarfs in Galactic classical novae are twice as large as those of field white dwarfs. Only a handful of dynamically well-determined nova white dwarf masses have been published, leaving the theoretical predictions poorly tested. The recurrence time distributions and mass accretion rate distributions of novae are even more poorly known. To address these deficiencies, we have combined our extensive simulations of nova eruptions with the Strope et al (2010) and Schaefer et al (2010) databases of outburst characteristics of Gala…
We obtained the absolute magnitudes, distances, and white dwarf (WD) masses of 32 recent galactic novae based on the time-stretching method for nova light curves. A large part of the light/color curves of two classical novae often overlap each other if we properly squeeze/stretch their timescales. Then, a target nova brightness is related to the other template nova brightness by $(M_V[t])_{\rm template} = (M_V[t/f_{\rm s}] - 2.5 \log f_{\rm s})_{\rm target}$, where $t$ is the time, $M_V[t]$ is the absolute $V$ magnitude, and $f_{\rm s}$ is their timescaling ratio. Moreover, when these two time…
Novae are the observational manifestations of thermonuclear runaways on the surface of accreting white dwarfs (WDs). Although novae are an ubiquitous phenomenon, their properties at low metallicity are not well understood. Using the publicly-available stellar evolution code Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA), we model the evolution of accreting carbon-oxygen WDs and consider models which accrete matter with metallicity Z=0.02 or $10^{-4}$. We consider both models without mixing and with matter enriched by CO-elements assuming that mixing occurs in the process of accretion (…
We analyzed light curves of seven relatively slower novae, PW Vul, V705 Cas, GQ Mus, RR Pic, V5558 Sgr, HR Del, and V723 Cas, based on an optically thick wind theory of nova outbursts. For fast novae, free-free emission dominates the spectrum in optical bands rather than photospheric emission and nova optical light curves follow the universal decline law. Faster novae blow stronger winds with larger mass loss rates. Since the brightness of free-free emission depends directly on the wind mass loss rate, faster novae show brighter optical maxima. In slower novae, however, we must take into accou…
We revisit hydrogen shell burning on white dwarfs (WDs) with higher mass accretion rates than the stability limit, \dot M_stable, above which hydrogen burning is stable. Novae occur with mass accretion rates below the limit. For an accretion rate > \dot M_stable, a first hydrogen shell flash occurs followed by steady nuclear burning, so the shell burning will not be quenched as long as the WD continuously accretes matter. On the basis of this picture, some persistent supersoft X-ray sources can be explained by binary models with high accretion rates. In some recent studies, however, the claim …
Classical novae are the most common astrophysical thermonuclear explosions, occurring on the surfaces of white dwarf stars accreting gas from companions in binary star systems. Novae typically expel ~10^(-4) solar masses of material at velocities exceeding 1,000 kilometres per second. However, the mechanism of mass ejection in novae is poorly understood, and could be dominated by the impulsive flash of thermonuclear energy, prolonged optically thick winds, or binary interaction with the nova envelope. Classical novae are now routinely detected in gigaelectronvolt gamma-ray wavelengths, suggest…
The hydrogen-rich envelopes accreted by white dwarf stars from their red dwarf companions lead to thermonuclear runaways observed as classical nova eruptions peaking at up to 1 Million solar luminosities. Virtually all nova progenitors are novalike binaries exhibiting high rates of mass transfer to their white dwarfs before and after an eruption. It is a puzzle that binaries indistinguishable from novalikes, but with much lower mass transfer rates, and resulting dwarf nova outbursts, co-exist at the same orbital periods. Nova shells surrounding several dwarf novae demonstrate that at least som…

Recent observations suggest our understanding of mass loss in classical novae is incomplete, motivating a new theoretical examination of the physical processes responsible for nova mass ejection. In this paper, we perform hydrodynamical simulations of classical nova outflows using the stellar evolution code MESA. We find that, when the binary companion is neglected, white dwarfs with masses >= 0.8 Msol successfully launch radiation-pressure-driven optically thick winds that carry away most of the envelope. However, for most of the mass loss phase, these winds are accelerated at radii beyond th…
Stimulated by the recent discovery of the 1 yr recurrence period nova M31N 2008-12a, we examined the shortest recurrence periods of hydrogen shell flashes on mass-accreting white dwarfs (WDs). We discuss the mechanism that yields a finite minimum recurrence period for a given WD mass. Calculating the unstable flashes for various WD masses and mass accretion rates, we identified a shortest recurrence period of about two months for a non-rotating 1.38 M_sun WD with a mass accretion rate of 3.6 x 10^{-7} M_sun yr^{-1}. A 1 yr recurrence period is realized for very massive (> 1.3 M_sun) WDs with v…
An X-ray flash, expected in a very early phase of a nova outburst, was at last detected with the {\it SRG}/eROSITA in the classical nova YZ Reticuli 2020. The observed flash timescale, luminosity, and blackbody temperature substantially constrain the nova model. We present light curve models of the X-ray flash for various white dwarf (WD) masses and mass accretion rates. We have found the WD mass in YZ Ret to be as massive as $M_{\rm WD}\sim 1.3 ~M_\odot$ with mass accretion rates of $\dot M_{\rm acc}\sim 5 \times 10^{-10}- 5\times 10^{-9} ~M_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ including the case that the mass a…

{We combine the results of our earlier study of the UV characteristics of 18 classical novae (CNe) with data from the literature and with the recent precise distance determinations from the Gaia satellite to investigate the statistical properties of old novae. All final parameters for the sample include a detailed treatment of the errors and their propagation. The physical properties reported here include the absolute magnitudes at maximum and minimum, a new maximum magnitude versus rate of decline (MMRD) relation, and the inclination-corrected 1100--6000-Å accretion disk luminosity. Most impo…
Peaking at 3.7 mag on 2020 July 11, YZ Ret was the second-brightest nova of the decade. The nova's moderate proximity (2.7 kpc from Gaia) provided an opportunity to explore its multi-wavelength properties in great detail. Here we report on YZ Ret as part of a long-term project to identify the physical mechanisms responsible for high-energy emission in classical novae. We use simultaneous Fermi/LAT and NuSTAR observations complemented by XMM-Newton X-ray grating spectroscopy to probe the physical parameters of the shocked ejecta and the nova-hosting white dwarf. The XMM-Newton observations reve…
We propose a theory for the MMRD relation of novae, using free-free emission model light curves built on the optically thick wind theory. We calculated $(t_3,M_{V,\rm max})$ for various sets of $(\dot M_{\rm acc}, M_{\rm WD})$, where $M_{V,\rm max}$ is the peak absolute $V$ magnitude, $t_3$ is the 3-mag decay time from the peak, and $\dot M_{\rm acc}$ is the mass accretion rate on to the white dwarf (WD) of mass $M_{\rm WD}$. The model light curves are uniquely characterized by $x\equiv M_{\rm env}/M_{\rm sc}$, where $M_{\rm env}$ is the hydrogen-rich envelope mass and $M_{\rm sc}$ is the scal…
Context. Classical novae are explosive phenomena that take place in stellar binary systems. They are powered by mass transfer from a low-mass main sequence star onto a white dwarf (either CO or ONe). The material accumulates for 10+4 - 10+5 yr until ignition under degenerate conditions, resulting in a thermonuclear runaway. The nuclear energy released produces peak temperatures of about 0.1 - 0.4 GK. During these events, 10-7 - 10-3 Msun enriched in intermediate-mass elements (with respect to solar abundances) are ejected into the interstellar medium. However, the origin of the large metallici…
Some transients, although classified as novae based on their maximum and early decline optical spectra, cast doubts on their true nature and whether nova impostors might exist. We monitored a candidate nova which displayed a distinctly unusual light curve at maximum and early decline through optical spectroscopy (3000-10000 Å, 500<R<100000) complemented with Swift UV and AAVSO optical photometry. We use the spectral line series to characterize the ejecta dynamics, structure, and mass. We found that the ejecta are in free ballistic expansion and structured as typical of classical novae. However…
V959 Mon is one of the gamma-ray detected novae. It was optically discovered about 50 days after the gamma-ray detection due to proximity to the Sun. The nova speed class is unknown because of lack of the earliest half of optical light curve and short supersoft X-ray phase due to eclipse by the disk rim. Using the universal decline law and time-stretching method, we analyzed the data of V959 Mon and obtained nova parameters. We estimated the distance modulus in the V band to be (m-M)_V=13.15\pm0.3 for the reddening of E(B-V)=0.38\pm0.01 by directly comparing with the similar type of novae, LV …
High-resolution spectroscopy has revealed large concentrations of CNO and sometimes other intermediate-mass elements in the shells ejected during nova outbursts, suggesting that the solar composition material transferred from the secondary mixes with the outermost layers of the underlying white dwarf during the thermonuclear runaway. Multidimensional simulations have shown that Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities provide self-enrichment of the accreted envelope with material from the outermost layers of the white dwarf, at levels that agree with observations. However, the Eulerian and time-explicit…
Classical novae show a rapid rise in optical brightness over a few hours. Until recently the rise phase, particularly the phenomenon of a pre-maximum halt, was observed sporadically. Solar observation satellites observing Coronal Mass Ejections enable us to observe the pre-maximum phase in unprecedented temporal resolution. We present observations of V5589 Sgr with STEREO HI-1B at a cadence of 40 min, the highest to date. We temporally resolve a pre-maximum halt for the first time, with two examples each rising over 40 min then declining within 80 min. Comparison with a grid of outburst models…

Known sources of lithium (Li) in the universe include the big bang, novae, asymptotic giant branch stars, and cosmic ray spallation. During their longer-lived evolutionary phases, stars are not expected to add to the Li budget of the Galaxy, but to largely deplete it. In this context, recent analyses of Li data from GALAH and LAMOST for field red clump (RC) stars have concluded that there is the need for a new production channel of Li, ubiquitous among low-mass stars, and that would be triggered on the upper red giant branch (RGB) or at helium ignition. This is distinct from the "Li-rich giant…
