Velocity Planning for self-driving vehicles in a complex environment is one of the most challenging tasks. It must satisfy the following three requirements: safety with regards to collisions; respect of the maximum velocity limits defined by the traffic rules; comfort of the passengers. In order to achieve these goals, the jerk and dynamic objects should be considered, however, it makes the problem as complex as a non-convex optimization problem. In this paper, we propose a linear programming (LP) based velocity planning method with jerk limit and obstacle avoidance constraints for an autonomo…

Low cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) need multiple refuels to accomplish large area coverage. The number of refueling stations and their placement plays a vital role in determining coverage efficiency. In this paper, we propose the use of a ground-based refueling vehicle (RV) to increase the operational range of a UAV in both spatial and temporal domains. Determining optimal routes for the UAV and RV, and selecting optimized locations for refueling to aid in minimizing coverage time is a challenging problem due to different vehicle speeds, coupling between refueling location placement, and…

In this paper, we present a novel control law for longitudinal speed control of autonomous vehicles. The key contributions of the proposed work include the design of a control law that reactively integrates the longitudinal surface gradient of road into its operation. In contrast to the existing works, we found that integrating the path gradient into the control framework improves the speed tracking efficacy. Since the control law is implemented over a shrinking domain scheme, it minimizes the integrated error by recomputing the control inputs at every discretized step and consequently provide…

We propose an integrated prediction and planning system for autonomous driving which uses rational inverse planning to recognise the goals of other vehicles. Goal recognition informs a Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) algorithm to plan optimal maneuvers for the ego vehicle. Inverse planning and MCTS utilise a shared set of defined maneuvers and macro actions to construct plans which are explainable by means of rationality principles. Evaluation in simulations of urban driving scenarios demonstrate the system's ability to robustly recognise the goals of other vehicles, enabling our vehicle to exp…

Cooperative intelligent transportation systems (ITS) are used by autonomous vehicles to communicate with surrounding autonomous vehicles and roadside units (RSU). Current C-ITS applications focus primarily on real-time information sharing, such as cooperative perception. In addition to real-time information sharing, self-driving cars need to coordinate their action plans to achieve higher safety and efficiency. For this reason, this study defines a vehicle's future action plan/path and designs a cooperative path-planning model at intersections using future path sharing based on the future path…

With the number of small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) in the national airspace projected to increase in the next few years, there is growing interest in a traffic management system capable of handling the demands of this aviation sector. It is expected that such a system will involve trajectory prediction, uncertainty propagation, and path planning algorithms. In this work, we use linear covariance propagation in combination with a quadratic programming-based collision detection algorithm to rapidly validate declared flight plans. Additionally, these algorithms are combined with a Dynamic,…
With the development of autonomous driving, it is becoming increasingly common for autonomous vehicles (AVs) and human-driven vehicles (HVs) to travel on the same roads. Existing single-vehicle planning algorithms on board struggle to handle sophisticated social interactions in the real world. Decisions made by these methods are difficult to understand for humans, raising the risk of crashes and making them unlikely to be applied in practice. Moreover, vehicle flows produced by open-source traffic simulators suffer from being overly conservative and lacking behavioral diversity. We propose a h…

There is an increasing demand for piloted autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to operate in polar ice conditions. At present, AUVs are deployed from ships and directly human-piloted in these regions, entailing a high carbon cost and limiting the scope of operations. A key requirement for long-term autonomous missions is a long-range route planning capability that is aware of the changing ice conditions. In this paper we address the problem of automating long-range route-planning for AUVs operating in the Southern Ocean. We present the route-planning method and results showing that efficient,…

In this study, we applied reinforcement learning based on the proximal policy optimization algorithm to perform motion planning for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in an open space with static obstacles. The application of reinforcement learning through a real UAV has several limitations such as time and cost; thus, we used the Gazebo simulator to train a virtual quadrotor UAV in a virtual environment. As the reinforcement learning progressed, the mean reward and goal rate of the model were increased. Furthermore, the test of the trained model shows that the UAV reaches the goal with an 81% g…

Merging is, in general, a challenging task for both human drivers and autonomous vehicles, especially in dense traffic, because the merging vehicle typically needs to interact with other vehicles to identify or create a gap and safely merge into. In this paper, we consider the problem of autonomous vehicle control for forced merge scenarios. We propose a novel game-theoretic controller, called the Leader-Follower Game Controller (LFGC), in which the interactions between the autonomous ego vehicle and other vehicles with a priori uncertain driving intentions is modeled as a partially observable…

The actions of an autonomous vehicle on the road affect and are affected by those of other drivers, whether overtaking, negotiating a merge, or avoiding an accident. This mutual dependence, best captured by dynamic game theory, creates a strong coupling between the vehicle's planning and its predictions of other drivers' behavior, and constitutes an open problem with direct implications on the safety and viability of autonomous driving technology. Unfortunately, dynamic games are too computationally demanding to meet the real-time constraints of autonomous driving in its continuous state and a…
Path planning is a key component in motion planning for autonomous vehicles. A path specifies the geometrical shape that the vehicle will travel, thus, it is critical to safe and comfortable vehicle motions. For urban driving scenarios, autonomous vehicles need the ability to navigate in cluttered environment, e.g., roads partially blocked by a number of vehicles/obstacles on the sides. How to generate a kinematically feasible and smooth path, that can avoid collision in complex environment, makes path planning a challenging problem. In this paper, we present a novel quadratic programming appr…
Mobile manipulation planning commonly adopts a decoupled approach that performs planning separately on the base and the manipulator. While this approach is fast, it can generate sub-optimal paths. Another direction is a coupled approach jointly adjusting the base and manipulator in a high-dimensional configuration space. This coupled approach addresses sub-optimality and incompleteness of the decoupled approach, but has not been widely used due to its excessive computational overhead. Given this trade-off space, we present a simple, yet effective mobile manipulation sampling method, harmonious…
Localization between a swarm of AUVs can be entirely estimated through the use of range measurements between neighboring AUVs via a class of techniques commonly referred to as sensor network localization. However, the localization quality depends on network topology, with degenerate topologies, referred to as low-rigidity configurations, leading to ambiguous or highly uncertain localization results. This paper presents tools for rigidity-based analysis, planning, and control of a multi-AUV network which account for sensor noise and limited sensing range. We evaluate our long-term planning fram…

We propose a risk-aware framework for multi-robot, multi-demand assignment and planning in unknown environments. Our motivation is disaster response and search-and-rescue scenarios where ground vehicles must reach demand locations as soon as possible. We consider a setting where the terrain information is available only in the form of an aerial, georeferenced image. Deep learning techniques can be used for semantic segmentation of the aerial image to create a cost map for safe ground robot navigation. Such segmentation may still be noisy. Hence, we present a joint planning and perception frame…
Autonomy and connectivity are considered among the most promising technologies to improve safety, mobility, fuel and time consumption in transportation systems. Some of the fuel efficiency benefits of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) can be realized through platooning. A platoon is a virtual train of CAVs that travel together following the platoon head, with small gaps between them. Vehicles may also reduce travel time by lane changing. In this paper, we devise an optimal control-based trajectory planning model that can provide safe and efficient trajectories for the subject vehicle and…

It also combines short-term predictions with a driver behavior cost-map to make long-term predictions. The strategic motion planner comprises 1) a model predicti…
In general, optimal motion planning can be performed both locally and globally. In such a planning, the choice in favour of either local or global planning technique mainly depends on whether the environmental conditions are dynamic or static. Hence, the most adequate choice is to use local planning or local planning alongside global planning. When designing optimal motion planning both local and global, the key metrics to bear in mind are execution time, asymptotic optimality, and quick reaction to dynamic obstacles. Such planning approaches can address the aforesaid target metrics more effic…

However, creating compact and sparse map representations that can be efficiently used for planning for such robots is still an open problem. In this paper, we take maps built from noisy sensor data and construct a sparse graph containing topological information that can be used for 3D planning. We use a Euclidean Signed Distance Field, extract a 3D Generalized Voronoi Diagram (GVD), and obtain a thin skeleton diagram representing the topological structure of the environment. We then convert this skeleton diagram into…

In this context, robust path planning algorithms will be described. These algorithms are equally applicable to land based…

We consider scenarios where a ground vehicle plans its path using data gathered by an aerial vehicle. In the aerial images, navigable areas of the scene may be occluded due to obstacles. Naively planning paths using aerial images may result in longer paths as a conservative planner may try to avoid regions that are occluded. We propose a modular, deep learning-based framework that allows the robot to predict the existence of navigable areas in the occluded regions. Specifically, we use image inpainting methods to fill in parts of the areas that are potentially occluded, which can then be seman…

To capture this aspect, on the one hand, a branching strategy is presented in this work that leads to better performance in terms of quality of resulting trajectories and runtime. On the other…
