Most real-world optimization problems often come with multiple global optima or local optima. Therefore, increasing niching metaheuristic algorithms, which devote to finding multiple optima in a single run, are developed to solve these multimodal optimization problems. However, there are two difficulties urgently to be solved for most existing niching metaheuristic algorithms: how to set the optimal values of niching parameters for different optimization problems, and how to jump out of the local optima efficiently. These two difficulties limited their practicality largely. Based on Whale Swar…

Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) is a nature-inspired meta-heuristic optimization algorithm, which was proposed by Mirjalili and Lewis in 2016. This algorithm has shown its ability to solve many problems. Comprehensive surveys have been conducted about some other nature-inspired algorithms, such as ABC, PSO, etc.Nonetheless, no survey search work has been conducted on WOA. Therefore, in this paper, a systematic and meta analysis survey of WOA is conducted to help researchers to use it in different areas or hybridize it with other common algorithms. Thus, WOA is presented in depth in terms of…

In this paper, a novel swarm intelligent algorithm is proposed, known as the fitness dependent optimizer (FDO). The bee swarming reproductive process and their collective decision-making have inspired this algorithm; it has no algorithmic connection with the honey bee algorithm or the artificial bee colony algorithm. It is worth mentioning that FDO is considered a particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based algorithm that updates the search agent position by adding velocity (pace). However, FDO calculates velocity differently; it uses the problem fitness function value to produce weights, and thes…
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) consists of many individual sensors that are deployed in the area of interest. In this paper, a novel swarm intelligent algorithm is proposed called ant nesting algorithm (ANA). The algorithm is inspired by Leptothorax ants and mimics the behavior of ants searching for positions to deposit grains while building a new nest. Although the algorithm is inspired by the swarming behavior of ants, it does not have any algorithmic similarity with the ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm. It is worth mentioning that ANA is considered a continuous algorithm that updates the search agent position by adding the rate of change (e.g., step or velocity). ANA computes the rate of cha…

Particle swarm optimization is a popular method for solving difficult optimization problems. There have been attempts to formulate the method in formal probabilistic or stochastic terms (e.g. bare bones particle swarm) with the aim to achieve more generality and explain the practical behavior of the method. Here we present a Bayesian interpretation of the particle swarm optimization. This interpretation provides a formal framework for incorporation of prior knowledge about the problem that is being solved. Furthermore, it also allows to extend the particle optimization method through the use o…

Swarm intelligence optimization algorithms can be adopted in swarm robotics for target searching tasks in a 2-D or 3-D space by treating the target signal strength as fitness values. Many current works in the literature have achieved good performance in single-target search problems. However, when there are multiple targets in an environment to be searched, many swarm intelligence-based methods may converge to specific locations prematurely, making it impossible to explore the environment further. The Brain Storm Optimization (BSO) algorithm imitates a group of humans in solving problems colle…

The periodic mode is analyzed together with two conventional boundary handling modes for particle swarm. By providing an infinite space that comprises periodic copies of original search space, it avoids possible disorganizing of particle swarm that is induced by the undesired mutations at the boundary. The results on benchmark functions show that particle swarm with periodic mode is capable of improving the search performance significantly, by compared with that of conventional modes and other algorithms.

We study the variant of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) that applies random velocities in a dimension instead of the regular velocity update equations as soon as the so-called potential of the swarm falls below a certain bound in this dimension, arbitrarily set by the user. In this case, the swarm performs a forced move. In this paper, we are interested in how, by counting the forced moves, the swarm can decide for itself to stop its movement because it is improbable to find better solution candidates as it already has found. We formally prove that when the swarm is close to a (local) optimu…

The code is written to apply the algorithm to meet the desired goals and the obtained results are verified using different simulators. The results obtained show that PSO can be applied very efficiently …
Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) makes use of a dynamical system for solving a search task. Instead of adding search biases in order to improve performance in certain problems, we aim to remove algorithm-induced scales by controlling the swarm with a mechanism that is scale-free except possibly for a suppression of scales beyond the system size. In this way a very promising performance is achieved due to the balance of large-scale exploration and local search. The resulting algorithm shows evidence for self-organised criticality, brought about via the intrinsic dynamics of the swarm as it int…
This paper presents a k-means-based multi-subpopulation particle swarm optimization, denoted as KMPSO, for training the neural network ensemble. The performance of the KMPSO has been evaluated on several benchmark problems. Our results show that the proposed method can effectively control the trade-off between the diversity and accuracy in the ensemble, thus achieving compet…

This paper extends boolean particle swarm optimization to a multi-objective setting, to our knowledge for the first time in the literature. Our proposed new boolean algorithm, MBOnvPSO, is notably simplified by the omission of a velocity update rule and has enhanced exploration ability due to the inclusion of a 'noise' term in the position update rule that prevents particles being trapped in local optima. Our algorithm additionally makes use of an external archive to store non-dominated solutions and implements crowding distance to encourage solution diversity. In benchmark tests, MBOnvPSO pro…

However, it is a general observation that not having right set of particles in the swarm may result in sub-optimal solutions, affecting the accuracies of classifiers. To address this issue, we propose a novel tunable swarm size approach to reconfigure the particles in a standard PSO, based on the dat…

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) method cannot be directly used in the problem of hyper-parameter estimation since the mathematical formulation of the mapping from hyper-parameters to loss function or generalization accuracy is unclear. Bayesian optimization (BO) framework is capable of converting the optimization of the hyper-parameters into the optimization of an acquisition function. The acquisition function is non-convex and multi-peak. So the problem can be better solved by the PSO. The proposed method in this paper uses the particle swarm method to optimize the acquisition function in t…
