We present calculations of the one-loop vacuum polarization correction (Uehling potential) for the three-body problem in the NRQED formalism. The case of one-electron molecular systems is considered. Numerical results of the vacuum polarization contribution at m$α$7 and higher orders for the fundamental transitions (v = 0, L = 0) $\rightarrow$ (v ' = 1, L ' = 0) in the H2+ and HD+ molecular ions are presented and compared with calculations performed in the adiabatic approximation. The residual uncertainty from this contribution on the transition frequencies is shown to be of a few tens of Hz.
The shift of atomic energy levels due to hadronic vacuum polarization is evaluated in a semiempirical way for hydrogenlike ions and for muonic hydrogen. A parametric hadronic polarization function obtained from experimental cross sections of $e^-e^+$ annihilation into hadrons is applied to derive an effective relativistic Uehling potential. The energy corrections originating from hadronic vacuum polarization are calculated for low-lying levels using analytical Dirac-Coulomb wave functions, as well as bound wave functions accounting for the finite nuclear size. Closed formulas for the hadronic …
We formulate the Hartree-Fock method using a functional integral approach. Then we consider a nonperturbative component of the vacuum polarization. For the Dirac-Coulomb operator the renormalization flow of the vacuum polarization is calculated numerically. For the Hartree-Fock operator the polarization is obtained by integrating an appropriately rescaled flow. The text includes an approximate calculation of the vacuum polarization in Uranium.
The rigorous calculation of the vacuum-polarization screening corrections to the hyperfine splitting in Li-like bismuth is presented. The two-electron diagrams with electric and magnetic vacuum-polarization loops are evaluated to all orders in alpha*Z, including the Wichmann-Kroll contributions. This improves the accuracy of the theoretical prediction for the specific difference of the hyperfine splitting values of H- and Li-like bismuth.
Complete vacuum polarization calculations incorporating finite nuclear size are presented for hydrogenic ions with principal quantum numbers n=1-5. Lithiumlike, sodiumlike, and copperlike ions are also treated starting with Kohn-Sham potentials, and including first-order screening corrections. In both cases dominant Uehling terms are calculated with high accuracy, and smaller Wichmann- Kroll terms are obtained using numerical electron Green's functions.
We present calculations of the one-loop vacuum polarization contribution (Uehling potential) for the two-center problem in the NRQED formalism. The cases of hydrogen molecular ions ($Z_1=Z_2=1$) as well as antiprotonic helium ($Z_1=2$, $Z_2=-1$) are considered. Numerical results of the vacuum polarization contribution at $mα^7$ order for the fundamental transitions $(v=0,L=0)\to(v'=1,L'=0)$ in H$_2^+$ and HD$^+$ are presented.
Adjusting a previously developed Grotch-type approach to a perturbative calculation of the electronic vacuum-polarization effects in muonic atoms, we find here the two-loop vacuum polarization relativistic recoil correction of order $α^2(Zα)^4m^2/M$ in light muonic atoms. The result is in perfect agreement with the one previously obtained within the Breit-type approach. We also discuss here simple approximations of the irreducible part of the two-loop vacuum-polarization dispersion density, which was applied to test our calculations and can be useful for other evaluations with an uncertainty b…
The muonic vacuum polarization contribution to the $g$-factor of the electron bound in a nuclear potential is investigated theoretically. The electric as well as the magnetic loop contributions are evaluated. We found these muonic effects to be observable in planned trapped-ion experiments with light and medium-heavy highly charged ions. The enhancement due to the strong Coulomb field boosts these contributions much above the corresponding terms in the free-electron $g$-factor. Due to their magnitude, muonic vacuum polarization terms are also significant in planned determinations of the fine-s…
In the comment we discuss an additional term to the $α^3$ correction to the Lamb shift, which was missed in the calculation by Kinoshita and Nio (Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 3240 (1999)).
Backward scattering of antiprotons by bare uranium is studied theoretically for antiproton energies within the interval 100 eV -- 1 keV. A marked maximum of the differential cross section in the backward direction (Coulomb glory) at some energies of the incident particle is revealed. The effect is due to the screening properties of the vacuum polarization potential and can be regarded as a manifestation of the vacuum polarization in non-relativistic collisions of heavy particles. Experimental observation can become feasible with new facilities for antiproton and ion research at GSI.
The change of the transverse spin asymmetry in the scattering of highly-relativistic spin-polarized electrons from nuclei by vacuum polarization effects is calculated within the Uehling approximation. Results are provided for 1 - 100 MeV electrons scattering from 31P, 64Zn, 152Sm, 197Au and 207,208Pb at backward angles.
We continue our account of relativistic recoil effects in muonic atoms and present explicitly analytic results at first order in electron-vacuum-polarization effects. The results are obtained within a Grotch-type approach based on an effective Dirac equation. Some expressions are cumbersome and we investigate their asymptotic behavior. Previously relativistic two-body effects due to the one-loop electron vacuum polarization were studied by several groups. Our results found here are consistent with the previous result derived within a Breit-type approach (including ours) and disagree with a rec…
In the collision of a high-energy proton beam and a strong laser field, merging of the laser photons can occur due to the polarization of vacuum. The probability of photon merging is calculated by accounting exactly for the laser field and presents a highly non-perturbative dependence on the laser intensity and frequency. It is shown that the non-perturbative vacuum-polarization effects can be experimentally measured by combining the next-generation of table-top petawatt lasers with presently available proton accelerators.
The leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the hyperfine splitting of true muonium is reevaluated in two ways. The first considers a more complex pionic form factor and better estimates of the perturbative QCD contributions. The second, more accurate method directly integrates the Drell ratio $R(s)$ to obtain $C_{1,\rm hvp}=-0.0489(3)$. This corresponds to an energy shift in the hyperfine splitting of $ΔE^μ_{hfs,\rm hvp}=276196(51)$ MHz.
Recent improvements in the determination of the running of the fine-structure constant also allow an update of the hadronic vacuum-polarization contribution to the Lamb shift. We find a shift of -3.40(7) kHz to the 1S level of hydrogen. We also comment on the contribution of this effect to the determination by elastic electron scattering of the r.m.s. radii of nuclei.
The effect of vacuum polarization on the parity violating asymmetry in the elastic electron-nucleus scattering is considered. Calculations are performed in the high-energy approximation with an exact account for the electric field of the nucleus. It is shown that the radiative correction to the parity violating asymmetry is logarithmically enhanced and the value of the correction is about -1%.
The reduced-mass dependence of relativistic and radiative effects in simple muonic bound systems is investigated. The spin-dependent nuclear recoil correction of order (Zalpha)^4 mu^3/m_N^2 is evaluated for muonic hydrogen and deuterium, and muonic helium ions (mu is the reduced mass and m_N is the nuclear mass). Relativistic corrections to vacuum polarization of order alpha (Zalpha)^4 mu are calculated, with a full account of the reduced-mass dependence. The results shift theoretical predictions. The radiative-recoil correction to vacuum polarization of order alpha (Zα)^5 ln^2(Zalpha) mu^2/m_…
The appearance of unconventional vacuum properties in intense fields has long been an active field of research. In this paper the vacuum polarization effect is investigated via a pump probe scheme of a probe light propagating in the vacuum excited by two counter-propagating laser beams. The modified light cone condition of the probe light is derived analytically for the situation that it passes through the electric/magnetic antinode plane of the pump field. The derivation does not follow the commonly adopted assumption of treating the pump field as a constant field. Differences from the conven…
