In this report, we present a new face detection scheme using deep learning and achieve the state-of-the-art detection performance on the well-known FDDB face detetion benchmark evaluation. In particular, we improve the state-of-the-art faster RCNN framework by combining a number of strategies, including feature concatenation, hard negative mining, multi-scale training, model pretraining, and proper calibration of key parameters. As a consequence, the proposed scheme obtained the state-of-the-art face detection performance, making it the best model in terms of ROC curves among all the published methods on the FDDB benchmark.
Faster RCNN has achieved great success for generic object detection including PASCAL object detection and MS COCO object detection. In this report, we propose a detailed designed Faster RCNN method named FDNet1.0 for face detection. Several techniques were employed including multi-scale training, multi-scale testing, light-designed RCNN, some tricks for inference and a vote-based ensemble method. Our method achieves two 1th places and one 2nd place in three tasks over WIDER FACE validation dataset (easy set, medium set, hard set).

Recent region-based object detectors are usually built with separate classification and localization branches on top of shared feature extraction networks. In this paper, we analyze failure cases of state-of-the-art detectors and observe that most hard false positives result from classification instead of localization. We conjecture that: (1) Shared feature representation is not optimal due to the mismatched goals of feature learning for classification and localization; (2) multi-task learning helps, yet optimization of the multi-task loss may result in sub-optimal for individual tasks; (3) la…
We adapted the join-training scheme of Faster RCNN framework from Caffe to TensorFlow as a baseline implementation for object detection. Our code is made publicly available. This report documents the simplifications made to the original pipeline, with justifications from ablation analysis on both PASCAL VOC 2007 and COCO 2014. We further investigated the role of non-maximal suppression (NMS) in selecting regions-of-interest (RoIs) for region classification, and found that a biased sampling toward small regions helps performance and can achieve on-par mAP to NMS-based sampling when converged su…
In this paper, we adapt the Faster-RCNN framework for the detection of underground buried objects (i.e. hyperbola reflections) in B-scan ground penetrating radar (GPR) images. Due to the lack of real data for training, we propose to incorporate more simulated radargrams generated from different configurations using the gprMax toolbox. Our designed CNN is first pre-trained on the grayscale Cifar-10 database. Then, the Faster-RCNN framework based on the pre-trained CNN is trained and fine-tuned on both real and simulated GPR data. Preliminary detection results show that the proposed technique ca…
With the demand for standardized large-scale livestock farming and the development of artificial intelligence technology, a lot of research in area of animal face recognition were carried on pigs, cattle, sheep and other livestock. Face recognition consists of three sub-task: face detection, face normalizing and face identification. Most of animal face recognition study focuses on face detection and face identification. Animals are often uncooperative when taking photos, so the collected animal face images are often in arbitrary directions. The use of non-standard images may significantly redu…
We apply Faster R-CNN to the detection of characters in namecard, in order to solve the problem of a small amount of data and the inbalance between different class, we designed the data augmentation and the 'fake' data generalizer to generate more data for the training of network. Without using data augmentation, the average IoU in correct samples could be no less than 80% and the mAP result of 80% was also achieved with Faster R-CNN. By applying the data augmentation, the variance of mAP is decreased and both of the IoU and mAP score has increased a little.

The human vision and perception system is inherently incremental where new knowledge is continually learned over time whilst existing knowledge is retained. On the other hand, deep learning networks are ill-equipped for incremental learning. When a well-trained network is adapted to new categories, its performance on the old categories will dramatically degrade. To address this problem, incremental learning methods have been explored which preserve the old knowledge of deep learning models. However, the state-of-the-art incremental object detector employs an external fixed region proposal meth…

The labeling cost of large number of bounding boxes is one of the main challenges for training modern object detectors. To reduce the dependence on expensive bounding box annotations, we propose a new semi-supervised object detection formulation, in which a few seed box level annotations and a large scale of image level annotations are used to train the detector. We adopt a training-mining framework, which is widely used in weakly supervised object detection tasks. However, the mining process inherently introduces various kinds of labelling noises: false negatives, false positives and inaccura…
Conventional object detection methods essentially suppose that the training and testing data are collected from a restricted target domain with expensive labeling cost. For alleviating the problem of domain dependency and cumbersome labeling, this paper proposes to detect objects in an unrestricted environment by leveraging domain knowledge trained from an auxiliary source domain with sufficient labels. Specifically, we propose a multi-adversarial Faster-RCNN (MAF) framework for unrestricted object detection, which inherently addresses domain disparity minimization for domain adaptation in fea…
Robust face detection in the wild is one of the ultimate components to support various facial related problems, i.e. unconstrained face recognition, facial periocular recognition, facial landmarking and pose estimation, facial expression recognition, 3D facial model construction, etc. Although the face detection problem has been intensely studied for decades with various commercial applications, it still meets problems in some real-world scenarios due to numerous challenges, e.g. heavy facial occlusions, extremely low resolutions, strong illumination, exceptionally pose variations, image or vi…
Conventional object detection models inevitably encounter a performance drop as the domain disparity exists. Unsupervised domain adaptive object detection is proposed recently to reduce the disparity between domains, where the source domain is label-rich while the target domain is label-agnostic. The existing models follow a parameter shared siamese structure for adversarial domain alignment, which, however, easily leads to the collapse and out-of-control risk of the source domain and brings negative impact to feature adaption. The main reason is that the labeling unfairness (asymmetry) betwee…

Camera traps have revolutionized the animal research of many species that were previously nearly impossible to observe due to their habitat or behavior. They are cameras generally fixed to a tree that take a short sequence of images when triggered. Deep learning has the potential to overcome the workload to automate image classification according to taxon or empty images. However, a standard deep neural network classifier fails because animals often represent a small portion of the high-definition images. That is why we propose a workflow named Weakly Object Detection Faster-RCNN+FPN which sui…

Early-stage plant density is an essential trait that determines the fate of a genotype under given environmental conditions and management practices. The use of RGB images taken from UAVs may replace traditional visual counting in fields with improved throughput, accuracy and access to plant localization. However, high-resolution (HR) images are required to detect small plants present at early stages. This study explores the impact of image ground sampling distance (GSD) on the performances of maize plant detection at 3-5 leaves stage using Faster-RCNN. Data collected at HR (GSD=0.3cm) over 6 …

3D object detection is receiving increasing attention from both industry and academia thanks to its wide applications in various fields. In this paper, we propose Point-Voxel Region-based Convolution Neural Networks (PV-RCNNs) for 3D object detection on point clouds. First, we propose a novel 3D detector, PV-RCNN, which boosts the 3D detection performance by deeply integrating the feature learning of both point-based set abstraction and voxel-based sparse convolution through two novel steps, i.e., the voxel-to-keypoint scene encoding and the keypoint-to-grid RoI feature abstraction. Second, we…
Video action detection approaches usually conduct actor-centric action recognition over RoI-pooled features following the standard pipeline of Faster-RCNN. In this work, we first empirically find the recognition accuracy is highly correlated with the bounding box size of an actor, and thus higher resolution of actors contributes to better performance. However, video models require dense sampling in time to achieve accurate recognition. To fit in GPU memory, the frames to backbone network must be kept low-resolution, resulting in a coarse feature map in RoI-Pooling layer. Thus, we revisit RCNN …

In this study, we first track the performance of the state-of-the-art deep object recognition network, Faster- RCNN, as a function of image resolution. The results reveals negative effects of low resolution images on recognition performance. They also show that different spatial frequencies convey different information about the objects in recognition process. It means multi-resolution recognition sys…

Feature pyramid architecture has been broadly adopted in object detection and segmentation to deal with multi-scale problem. However, in this paper we show that the capacity of the architecture has not been fully explored due to the inadequate utilization of the supervision information. Such insufficient utilization is caused by the supervision signal degradation in back propagation. Thus inspired, we propose a dually supervised method, named dually supervised FPN (DSFPN), to enhance the supervision signal when training the feature pyramid network (FPN). In particular, DSFPN is constructed by …
We propose an object detection method that improves the accuracy of the conventional SSD (Single Shot Multibox Detector), which is one of the top object detection algorithms in both aspects of accuracy and speed. The performance of a deep network is known to be improved as the number of feature maps increases. However, it is difficult to improve the performance by simply raising the number of feature maps. In this paper, we propose and analyze how to use feature maps effectively to improve the performance of the conventional SSD. The enhanced performance was obtained by changing the structure …

Deep neural network approaches have demonstrated high performance in object recognition (CNN) and detection (Faster-RCNN) tasks, but experiments have shown that such architectures are vulnerable to adversarial attacks (FFF, UAP): low amplitude perturbations, barely perceptible by the human eye, can lead to a drastic reduction in labeling performance. This article proposes a new context module, called \textit{Transformer-Encoder Detector Module}, that can be applied to an object detector to (i) improve the labeling of object instances; and (ii) improve the detector's robustness to adversarial a…

Region-based convolutional neural networks (R-CNN)~\cite{fast_rcnn,faster_rcnn,mask_rcnn} have largely dominated object detection. Operators defined on RoIs (Region of Interests) play an important role in R-CNNs such as RoIPooling~\cite{fast_rcnn} and RoIAlign~\cite{mask_rcnn}. They all only utilize information inside RoIs for RoI prediction, even with their recent deformable extensions~\cite{deformable_cnn}. Although surrounding context is well-known for its importance in object detection, it has yet been integrated in R-CNNs in a flexible and effective way. Inspired by the auto-context work~…

Pedestrian detection in crowd scenes poses a challenging problem due to the heuristic defined mapping from anchors to pedestrians and the conflict between NMS and highly overlapped pedestrians. The recently proposed end-to-end detectors(ED), DETR and deformable DETR, replace hand designed components such as NMS and anchors using the transformer architecture, which gets rid of duplicate predictions by computing all pairwise interactions between queries. Inspired by these works, we explore their performance on crowd pedestrian detection. Surprisingly, compared to Faster-RCNN with FPN, the result…
Deep SORT\cite{wojke2017simple} is a tracking-by-detetion approach to multiple object tracking with a detector and a RE-ID model. With a unified network, we are able to train the whole model end-to-end with multi loss, which has shown much benefit in other recent works. The RE-ID model in Deep SORT needs to use deep CNNs to extract feature map from detected obj…

Robust and accurate nuclei centroid detection is important for the understanding of biological structures in fluorescence microscopy images. Existing automated nuclei localization methods face three main challenges: (1) Most of object detection methods work only on 2D images and are difficult to extend to 3D volumes; (2) Segmentation-based models can be used on 3D volumes but it is computational expensive for large microscopy volumes and they have difficulty distinguishing different instances of objects; (3) Hand annotated ground truth is limited for 3D microscopy volumes. Large pose variations remain to be a challenge that confronts real-word face detection. We propose a new cascaded Convolutional Neural Network, dubbed the name Supervised Transformer Network, to address this challenge. The candidate regions are then warped by mapping the detected facial landmarks to their canonical positions to better normalize the face patterns. The second stage, which is a RCNN, then verifies if the warped candidate regio…
