In an algorithmic complexity attack, a malicious party takes advantage of the worst-case behavior of an algorithm to cause denial-of-service. A prominent algorithmic complexity attack is regular expression denial-of-service (ReDoS), in which the attacker exploits a vulnerable regular expression by providing a carefully-crafted input string that triggers worst-case behavior of the matching algorithm. This paper proposes a technique for automatically finding ReDoS vulnerabilities in programs. Specifically, our approach automatically identifies vulnerable regular expressions in the program and determines whether an "evil" input string can be matched against a vulnerable regular expression. We have implemented our proposed approach in a tool called REXPLOITER and found 41 exploitable security vulnerabilities in Java web applications.
Algorithmic complexity vulnerabilities are a class of security problems that enables attackers to trigger the worst-case complexity of certain algorithms. Such vulnerabilities can be leveraged to deploy low-volume, asymmetric, CPU-based denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Previous work speculates that these vulnerabilities are more dangerous in certain web servers, like Node.js, than in traditional ones, like Apache. We believe it is of utmost importance to understand if this is indeed the case or if there are ways to compensate against such problems using various deployment strategies. To this e…
In high-level Autonomous Driving (AD) systems, behavioral planning is in charge of making high-level driving decisions such as cruising and stopping, and thus highly securitycritical. In this work, we perform the first systematic study of semantic security vulnerabilities specific to overly-conservative AD behavioral planning behaviors, i.e., those that can cause failed or significantly-degraded mission performance, which can be critical for AD services such as robo-taxi/delivery. We call them semantic Denial-of-Service (DoS) vulnerabilities, which we envision to be most generally exposed in p…

Software Defined Networking (SDN) enables flexible and scalable network control and management. However, it also introduces new vulnerabilities that can be exploited by attackers. In particular, low-rate and slow or stealthy Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks are recently attracting attention from researchers because of their detection challenges. In this paper, we propose a novel machine learning based defense framework named Q-MIND, to effectively detect and mitigate stealthy DoS attacks in SDN-based networks. We first analyze the adversary model of stealthy DoS attacks, the related vulnerabili…
Traditional power grids are evolving to keep pace with the demands of the modern age. Smart grids contain integrated IT systems for better management and efficiency, but in doing so, also inherit a plethora of cyber-security threats and vulnerabilities. Denial-of-Service (DoS) is one such threat. At the same time, the smart grid has particular characteristics (e.g. minimal delay tolerance), which can influence the nature of threats and so require special consideration. In this paper, we identify a set of possible smart grid-specific DoS scenarios based on current research, and analyse them in …
OAuth is the new de facto standard for delegating authorization in the web. An important limitation of OAuth is the fact that it was designed for authorization and not for authentication. The usage of OAuth for authentication thus leads to serious vulnerabilities as shown by Zhou et. al. in [44] and Chen et. al. in [9]. OpenID Connect was created on top of OAuth to fill this gap by providing federated identity management and user authentication. OpenID Connect was standardized in February 2014, but leading companies like Google, Microsoft, AOL and PayPal are already using it in their web appli…
On a regular basis, we read in the news about cyber-attacks on critical infrastructures, such as power plants. Such infrastructures rely on the so-called Industrial Control Systems (ICS) / Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) networks. By hacking the devices in such systems and networks, attackers may take over the control of critical infrastructures, with potentially devastating consequences. This report focusses on critical infrastructures in the Netherlands and investigates three main questions: 1) How many ICS/SCADA devices located in the Netherlands can be easily found by pote…
Mirai is a type of malware that creates a botnet of internet-connected devices, which can later be used to infect other devices or servers. This paper aims to analyze and explain the Mirai code and create a low-cost simulation environment to aid in the dynamic analysis of Mirai. Further, we perform controlled Denial-of-Service attacks while measuring resource consumption on resource-constrained compromised and victim Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, such as energy consumption, CPU utilization, memory utilization, Ethernet input/output performance, and Secure Digital card usage. The experiment…
Vulnerability detection is an important issue in software security. Although various data-driven vulnerability detection methods have been proposed, the task remains challenging since the diversity and complexity of real-world vulnerable code in syntax and semantics make it difficult to extract vulnerable features with regular deep learning models, especially in analyzing a large program. Moreover, the fact that real-world vulnerable codes contain a lot of redundant information unrelated to vulnerabilities will further aggravate the above problem. To mitigate such challenges, we define a novel…
Cyber-physical systems (CPS) and Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices are increasingly being deployed across multiple functionalities, ranging from healthcare devices and wearables to critical infrastructures, e.g., nuclear power plants, autonomous vehicles, smart cities, and smart homes. These devices are inherently not secure across their comprehensive software, hardware, and network stacks, thus presenting a large attack surface that can be exploited by hackers. In this article, we present an innovative technique for detecting unknown system vulnerabilities, managing these vulnerabilities, and …
More and more industrial devices are connected to IP-based networks, as this is essential for the success of Industry 4.0. However, this interconnection also results in an increased attack surface for various network-based attacks. One of the easiest attacks to carry out are DoS attacks, in which the attacked target is overloaded due to high network traffic and corresponding CPU load. Therefore, the attacked device can no longer provide its regular services. This is especially critical for devices, which perform real-time operations in industrial processes. To protect against DoS attacks, ther…
