Edge detection is a classic problem in the field of image processing, which lays foundations for other tasks such as image segmentation. Conventionally, this operation is performed using gradient operators such as the Roberts or Sobel operator, which can discover local changes in intensity levels. These operators, however, perform poorly on low contrast images. In this paper, we propose an edge detector architecture for color images based on fuzzy theory and the Sobel operator. First, the R, G and B channels are extracted from an image and enhanced using fuzzy methods, in order to suppress noise and improve the contrast between the background and the objects. The Sobel operator is then applied to each of the channels, which are finally combined into an edge map of the origin image. Experimental results obtained through an FPGA-based implementation have proved the proposed method effective.

Segmentation partitions an image into different regions containing pixels with similar attributes. A standard non-contextual variant of Fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm (FCM), considering its simplicity is generally used in image segmentation. Using FCM has its disadvantages like it is dependent on the initial guess of the number of clusters and highly sensitive to noise. Satisfactory visual segments cannot be obtained using FCM. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) belongs to the class of evolutionary algorithms and has good convergence speed and fewer parameters compared to Genetic Algorithms…

Digital image segmentation is the process of assigning distinct labels to different objects in a digital image, and the fuzzy segmentation algorithm has been successfully used in the segmentation of images from a wide variety of sources. However, the traditional fuzzy segmentation algorithm fails to segment objects that are characterized by textures whose patterns cannot be successfully described by simple statistics computed over a very restricted area. In this paper, we propose an extension of the fuzzy segmentation algorithm that uses adaptive textural affinity functions to perform the segm…
In this paper, a fast and practical GPU-based implementation of Fuzzy C-Means(FCM) clustering algorithm for image segmentation is proposed. First, an extensive analysis is conducted to study the dependency among the image pixels in the algorithm for parallelization. The proposed GPU-based FCM has been tested on digital brain simulated dataset to segment white matter(WM), gray matter(GM) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) soft tissue regions. The execution time of the sequential FCM is 519 seconds for an image dataset with the size of 1MB. While the proposed GPU-based FCM requires only 2.33 seconds …

This chapter approaches the image retrieval system on the base of the colors of image. It creates fuzzy signature to describe the color of image on color space HSV and builds fuzzy Hamming distance (FHD) to evaluate the similarity between the images. In order to reduce the storage space and speed up the search of similar images, it aims to create S-tree to store fuzzy signature relies on FHD and builds image retrieval algorithm on S-tree. Then, it provides the content-based image retrieval (CBIR) and an image retrieval method on FHD and S-tree. Last but not least, based on this theory, it also…
Instead of directly utilizing an observed image including some outliers, noise or intensity inhomogeneity, the use of its ideal value (e.g. noise-free image) has a favorable impact on clustering. Hence, the accurate estimation of the residual (e.g. unknown noise) between the observed image and its ideal value is an important task. To do so, we propose an $\ell_0$ regularization-based Fuzzy $C$-Means (FCM) algorithm incorporating a morphological reconstruction operation and a tight wavelet frame transform. To achieve a sound trade-off between detail preservation and noise suppression, morpholog…

In a class of piecewise-constant image segmentation models, we propose to incorporate a weighted difference of anisotropic and isotropic total variation (AITV) to regularize the partition boundaries in an image. In particular, we replace the total variation regularization in the Chan-Vese segmentation model and a fuzzy region competition model by the proposed AITV. To deal with the nonconvex nature of AITV, we apply the difference-of-convex algorithm (DCA), in which the subproblems can be minimized by the primal-dual hybrid gradient method with linesearch. The convergence of the DCA scheme is …
Although spatial information of images usually enhance the robustness of the Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) algorithm, it greatly increases the computational costs for image segmentation. To achieve a sound trade-off between the segmentation performance and the speed of clustering, we come up with a Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence-based FCM algorithm by incorporating a tight wavelet frame transform and a morphological reconstruction operation. To enhance FCM's robustness, an observed image is first filtered by using the morphological reconstruction. A tight wavelet frame system is employed to decompose …

Color image segmentation is a crucial step in many computer vision and pattern recognition applications. This article introduces an adaptive and unsupervised clustering approach based on Voronoi regions, which can be applied to solve the color image segmentation problem. The proposed method performs region splitting and merging within Voronoi regions of the Dirichlet Tessellated image (also called a Voronoi diagram) , which improves the efficiency and the accuracy of the number of clusters and cluster centroids estimation process. Furthermore, the proposed method uses cluster centroid proximit…
Image enhancement is an important stage in the image-processing domain. The most known image enhancement method is the histogram equalization. This method is an automated one, and realizes a simultaneous modification for brightness and contrast in the case of monochrome images and for brightness, contrast, saturation and hue in the case of color images. Simple and efficient methods can be obtained if affine transforms within logarithmic models are used. A very important thing in the affine transform determination for color images is the coordinate system that is used for color space representa…

Image posterization is converting images with a large number of tones into synthetic images with distinct flat areas and a fewer number of tones. In this technical report, we present the implementation and results of using fuzzy logic in order to generate a posterized image in a simple and fast way. The image filter is based on fuzzy logic and bilateral filtering; where, the given image is blurred to remove small details. Then, the fuzzy logic is used to classify each pixel into one of three specific categories in order to reduce the number of colors. This filter was developed during building …
Normalizing unwanted color variations due to differences in staining processes and scanner responses has been shown to aid machine learning in computational pathology. Of the several popular techniques for color normalization, structure preserving color normalization (SPCN) is well-motivated, convincingly tested, and published with its code base. However, SPCN makes occasional errors in color basis estimation leading to artifacts such as swapping the color basis vectors between stains or giving a colored tinge to the background with no tissue. We made several algorithmic improvements to remove…

Low resolution image enhancement is a classical computer vision problem. Selecting the best method to reconstruct an image to a higher resolution with the limited data available in the low-resolution image is quite a challenge. A major drawback from the existing enlargement techniques is the introduction of color bleeding while interpolating pixels over the edges that separate distinct colors in an image. The color bleeding causes to accentuate the edges with new colors as a result of blending multiple colors over adjacent regions. This paper proposes a novel approach to mitigate the color ble…

The accurate segmentation of clouds in these images is a challenging task, as clouds do not possess any clear structure. Several algorithms using different color models have been proposed in the literature. This paper presents a systematic approach for the selection of color spaces and components for optimal segmentation of sky/cloud images. Using mainly principal component analysis (PCA) and fuzzy clustering for evaluation, we identify the most suitable col…

In this paper, we introduce a novel - physico-chemical - approach for calibration of a digital camera chip. This approach utilizes results of measurement of incident light spectra of calibration films of different levels of gray for construction of calibration curve (number of incident photons vs. image pixel intensity) for each camera pixel. We show spectral characteristics of such corrected digital raw image files (a primary camera signal) and demonstrate their suitability for next image processing and analysis.
We propose the first accurate digitization and color reconstruction process for historical lenticular film that is robust to artifacts. Lenticular films emerged in the 1920s and were one of the first technologies that permitted to capture full color information in motion. The technology leverages an RGB filter and cylindrical lenticules embossed on the film surface to encode the color in the horizontal spatial dimension of the image. To project the pictures the encoding process was reversed using an appropriate analog device. In this work, we introduce an automated, fully digital pipeline to p…

We describe the application of convolutional neural network style transfer to the problem of improved visualization of underdrawings and ghost-paintings in fine art oil paintings. Such underdrawings and hidden paintings are typically revealed by x-ray or infrared techniques which yield images that are grayscale, and thus devoid of color and full style information. Past methods for inferring color in underdrawings have been based on physical x-ray fluorescence spectral imaging of pigments in ghost-paintings and are thus expensive, time consuming, and require equipment not available in most cons…

We present processing methods to limit information passed in the color scheme, improving generalization. Finally, we demonstrate natural-looking results when colorizing outlines from scratch, as well as from a messy, …

To produce images that are suitable for display, tone-mapping is widely used in digital cameras to map linear color measurements into narrow gamuts with limited dynamic range. This introduces non-linear distortion that must be undone, through a radiometric calibration process, before computer vision systems can analyze such photographs radiometrically. This paper considers the inherent uncertainty of undoing the effects of tone-mapping. We observe that this uncertainty varies substantially across color space, making some pixels more reliable than others. We introduce a model for this uncertain…

We then, extract image foregrounds from both source and multiple target images. Then by using image matting algorithms, the system extracts the semantic information such as faces, lips, teeth, eyes, eyebrows, etc., from the extracted foregrounds of the source image. And, then the color is transferred between corresponding…

In this letter we propose to denoise digital color images via an improved geometric diffusion scheme. By introducing edges detected from all three color channels into the diffusion the proposed scheme avoids color smearing artifacts. Vector valued diffusion is used to control the smoothing and the geometry of color images are taken into consideration. Color edge strength function computed from different planes is introduced and it stops the diffusion spread across chromatic edges. Experimental results indicate that the scheme achieves good denoising with edge preservation when compared to othe…

The digital pathology images studied include diagnostically important features, such as the conspicuity of nuclei. Three different display aging models are applied to images: aging of lu…

With rapid advances in digital information processing systems, and more specifically in digital image processing software, there is a widespread development of advanced tools and techniques for digital image forgery. One of the techniques most commonly used is the Copy-move forgery which proceeds by copying a part of an image and pasting it into the same image, in order to maliciously hide an object or a region. In this paper, we propose a method to detect this specific kind of counterfeit. Firstly, the color image is converted from RGB color space to YCbCr color space and then the R, G, B and…

On another hand, past studies have shown that particular colors can be associated with specific emotion arousal in humans. Do deep neural networks also learn this behavior? In this study, we investigate if DNNs can learn implicit associations in stimuli, particularly, an emotion-color association between image stimuli. Our study was conducted in two parts. First, we collected …
