Many automatic translation works have been addressed between major European language pairs, by taking advantage of large scale parallel corpora, but very few research works are conducted on the Amharic-Arabic language pair due to its parallel data scarcity. Two Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU) based Neural Machine Translation (NMT) models are developed using Attention-based Encoder-Decoder architecture which is adapted from the open-source OpenNMT system. In order to perform the experiment, a small parallel Quranic text corpus is constructed by modifying the existi…
Documenting the construction of an NMT (Neural Machine Translation) system for En/Ja based on the Transformer architecture leveraging the OpenNMT framework. A systematic exploration of corpora pre-processing, hyperparameter tuning and model architecture is carried out to obtain optimal performance. The system is evaluated using standard auto-evaluation metrics such as BLEU, and my subjective opinion as a Japanese linguist.
As part of a larger project on optimal learning conditions in neural machine translation, we investigate characteristic training phases of translation engines. All our experiments are carried out using OpenNMT-Py: the pre-processing step is implemented using the Europarl training corpus and the INTERSECT corpus is used for validation. Longitudinal analyses of training phases suggest that the progression of translations is not always linear. Following the results of textometric explorations, we identify the importance of the phenomena related to chronological progression, in order to map differ…

In this paper we present our open-source neural machine translation (NMT) toolkit called "Yet Another Neural Machine Translation Toolkit" abbreviated as YANMTT which is built on top of the Transformers library. Despite the growing importance of sequence to sequence pre-training there surprisingly few, if not none, well established toolkits that allow users to easily do pre-training. Toolkits such as Fairseq which do allow pre-training, have very large codebases and thus they are not beginner friendly. With regards to transfer learning via fine-tuning most toolkits do not explicitly allow the u…
This paper describes SYSTRAN's systems submitted to the WMT 2017 shared news translation task for English-German, in both translation directions. Our systems are built using OpenNMT, an open-source neural machine translation system, implementing sequence-to-sequence models with LSTM encoder/decoders and attention. We experimented using monolingual data automatically back-translated. Our resulting models are further hyper-specialised with an adaptation technique that finely tunes models according to the evaluation test sentences.
We present TURJUMAN, a neural toolkit for translating from 20 languages into Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). TURJUMAN exploits the recently-introduced text-to-text Transformer AraT5 model, endowing it with a powerful ability to decode into Arabic. The toolkit offers the possibility of employing a number of diverse decoding methods, making it suited for acquiring paraphrases for the MSA translations as an added value. To train TURJUMAN, we sample from publicly available parallel data employing a simple semantic similarity method to ensure data quality. This allows us to prepare and release AraOPU…

The Philippines is an archipelago composed of 7, 641 different islands with more than 150 different languages. This linguistic differences and diversity, though may be seen as a beautiful feature, have contributed to the difficulty in the promotion of educational and cultural development of different domains in the country. An effective machine translation system solely dedicated to cater Philippine languages will surely help bridge this gap. In this research work, a never before applied approach for language translation to a Philippine language was used for a Cebuano to Tagalog translator. A …
Simultaneous translation on both text and speech focuses on a real-time and low-latency scenario where the model starts translating before reading the complete source input. Evaluating simultaneous translation models is more complex than offline models because the latency is another factor to consider in addition to translation quality. The research community, despite its growing focus on novel modeling approaches to simultaneous translation, currently lacks a universal evaluation procedure. Therefore, we present SimulEval, an easy-to-use and general evaluation toolkit for both simultaneous te…
We have implemented a machine translation system, the PolyMath Translator, for LaTeX documents containing mathematical text. The current implementation translates English LaTeX to French LaTeX, attaining a BLEU score of 53.5 on a held-out test corpus of mathematical sentences. It produces LaTeX documents that can be compiled to PDF without further editing. The system first converts the body of an input LaTeX document into English sentences containing math tokens, using the pandoc universal document converter to parse LaTeX input. We have trained a Transformer-based translator model, using Open…

Parallel corpus is a critical resource in machine learning-based translation. The task of collecting, extracting, and aligning texts in order to build an acceptable corpus for doing the translation is very tedious most especially for low-resource languages. In this paper, we present the efforts made to build a parallel corpus for Cebuano and Filipino from two different domains: biblical texts and the web. For the biblical resource, subword unit translation for verbs and copy-able approach for nouns were applied to correct inconsistencies in the translation. This correction mechanism was applie…
We present novel automatic metrics for machine translation evaluation that use discourse structure and convolution kernels to compare the discourse tree of an automatic translation with that of the human reference. We experiment with five transformations and augmentations of a base discourse tree representation based on the rhetorical structure theory, and we combine the kernel scores for each of them into a single score. Finally, we add other metrics from the ASIYA MT evaluation toolkit, and we tune the weights of the combination on actual human judgments. Experiments on the WMT12 and WMT13 m…

Automatically recognized terminology is widely used for various domain-specific texts processing tasks, such as machine translation, information retrieval or sentiment analysis. However, there is still no agreement on which methods are best suited for particular settings and, moreover, there is no reliable comparison of already developed methods. We believe that one of the main reasons is the lack of state-of-the-art methods implementations, which are usually non-trivial to recreate. In order to address these issues, we present ATR4S, an open-source software written in Scala that comprises mor…

Machine translation is the process of translating text from one language to another. In this paper, Statistical Machine Translation is done on Assamese and English language by taking their respective parallel corpus. A statistical phrase based translation toolkit Moses is used here. To develop the language model and to align the words we used two another tools IRSTLM, GIZA respectively. BLEU score is used to check our translation system performance, how good it is. A difference in BLEU scores is obtained while translating sentences from Assamese to English and vice-versa. Since Indian language…
Word alignment was once a core unsupervised learning task in natural language processing because of its essential role in training statistical machine translation (MT) models. Although unnecessary for training neural MT models, word alignment still plays an important role in interactive applications of neural machine translation, such as annotation transfer and lexicon injection. While statistical MT methods have been replaced by neural approaches with superior performance, the twenty-year-old GIZA++ toolkit remains a key component of state-of-the-art word alignment systems. Prior work on neur…
Reordering is a preprocessing stage for Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) system where the words of the source sentence are reordered as per the syntax of the target language. We are proposing a rich set of rules for better reordering. The idea is to facilitate the training process by better alignments and parallel phrase extraction for a phrase-based SMT system. Reordering also helps the decoding process and hence improving the machine translation quality. We have observed significant improvements in the translation quality by using our approach over the baseline SMT. We have used BLEU, N…
The state of the art of handling rich morphology in neural machine translation (NMT) is to break word forms into subword units, so that the overall vocabulary size of these units fits the practical limits given by the NMT model and GPU memory capacity. In this paper, we compare two common but linguistically uninformed methods of subword construction (BPE and STE, the method implemented in Tensor2Tensor toolkit) and two linguistically-motivated methods: Morfessor and one novel method, based on a derivational dictionary. Our experiments with German-to-Czech translation, both morphologically rich…

Training of neural machine translation (NMT) models usually uses mini-batches for efficiency purposes. During the mini-batched training process, it is necessary to pad shorter sentences in a mini-batch to be equal in length to the longest sentence therein for efficient computation. Previous work has noted that sorting the corpus based on the sentence length before making mini-batches reduces the amount of padding and increases the processing speed. However, despite the fact that mini-batch creation is an essential step in NMT training, widely used NMT toolkits implement disparate strategies fo…
Word-level Quality Estimation (QE) of Machine Translation (MT) aims to find out potential translation errors in the translated sentence without reference. Typically, conventional works on word-level QE are designed to predict the translation quality in terms of the post-editing effort, where the word labels ("OK" and "BAD") are automatically generated by comparing words between MT sentences and the post-edited sentences through a Translation Error Rate (TER) toolkit. While the post-editing effort can be used to measure the translation quality to some extent, we find it usually conflicts with t…
Machine Transliteration has come out to be an emerging and a very important research area in the field of machine translation. Transliteration basically aims to preserve the phonological structure of words. Proper transliteration of name entities plays a very significant role in improving the quality of machine translation. In this paper we are doing machine transliteration for English-Punjabi language pair using rule based approach. We have constructed some rules for syllabification. Syllabification is the process to extract or separate the syllable from the words. In this we are calculating …
In the present article, we identified the qualitative differences between Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) and Neural Machine Translation (NMT) outputs. We have tried to answer two important questions: 1. Does NMT perform equivalently well with respect to SMT and 2. Does it add extra flavor in improving the quality of MT output by employing simple sentences as training units. In order to obtain insights, we have developed three core models viz., SMT model based on Moses toolkit, followed by character and word level NMT models. All of the systems use English-Hindi and English-Bengali langu…

We propose Semantic Parser Localizer (SPL), a toolkit that leverages Neural Machine Translation (NMT) systems to localize a semantic parser for a new language. Our methodology is to (1) generate training data automatically in the target language by augmenting machine-translated datasets with local entities scraped from public websites, (2) add a few-shot boost of human-translated sentences and train a novel XLMR-LSTM semantic parser, and (3) test the model on natural utterances curated using human translators. We assess the effectiveness of our approach by extending the current capabilities of…
This paper describes our submission to the First Workshop on Reordering for Statistical Machine Translation. We have decided to build a reordering system based on tree-to-string model, using only publicly available tools to accomplish this task. With the provided training data we have built a translation model using Moses toolkit, and then we applied a chart decoder, implemented in Moses, to reorder the sentences. Even though our submission only covered English-Farsi language pair, we believe that the approach itself should work regardless of the choice of the languages, so we have also carrie…
