Two-proton decay of the $^{17}$Ne low-lying states populated in the $^1$H($^{18}$Ne,$d$)$^{17}$Ne transfer reaction was studied. The two-proton width $Γ_{2p}$ of the $^{17}$Ne first excited $3/2^-$ state at $E^*=1.288$ MeV is of importance for the two-proton radioactivity theory and nuclear-astrophysics applications. A dedicated search for the two-proton emission of this state was performed leading to the new upper limit obtained for the width ratio $Γ_{2p}/Γ_γ < 1.6(3) \times 10^{-4}$. A novel, "combined mass" method is suggested and tested capable to improve the resolution of the experiment which is a prime significance for the study of nuclear states with extremely small particle-to-gamma width ratios $Γ_{\mathrm{part}}/Γ_γ$. The condition $Γ_{\mathrm{part}} \ll Γ_γ$ is quite common for the states of astrophysical interest which makes the proposed approach promising in this field.
The possibility for the excited nuclear states to decay by emission of the neutrino-antineutrino pair in direct competition with electromagnetic decay modes is commented upon.
A brief review on double beta decay to excited states of daughter nuclei is given. The ECEC(ov) transision to the excited states are discussed in association with a possible enhancement of the decay rate by several orders of magnitude.
A search for the double beta decay transition of $^{94}$Zr into the first excited state of $^{94}$Mo has been performed at the Felsenkeller underground laboratory in Dresden, Germany. A 341.1 g zirconium sample with natural isotopic composition has been measured for 43.9 d in an ultra low background gamma spectroscopy setup. No signal has been observed and a new best lower half-life limit is set as $5.2\times10^{19}$ yr (90% CI). This limit is valid for the $0νββ$ and $2νββ$ decay into excited states of $^{94}$Mo but cannot distinguish between the two modes. Existing limits are improved by 50%…
A search for alpha and double beta decays of ytterbium isotopes was performed with an ultra-low background high purity germanium detector at Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory (Italy). A 194.7 g Yb$_2$(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$ powder sample was measured for 11.3~d with a total Yb exposure of 1.25 kg$\times$d. Half-life limits for $α$-decay modes of $^{168}$Yb, $^{170}$Yb, $^{171}$Yb, $^{172}$Yb, $^{173}$Yb, $^{174}$Yb and $^{176}$Yb into the first excited states have been obtained between $6\times10^{14}$ yr and $2\times10^{16}$ yr. These are the first experimental constraints of these decay modes. Doub…
The coincidence detection efficiency of the TUNL--ITEP apparatus designed for measuring half-life times of two-neutrino double-beta decay transitions to excited final states in daughter nuclei has been measured with a factor of 2.4 improved accuracy. In addition, the previous measuring time of 455 days for the study of the Mo-100 two-neutrino double-beta decay to the first excited 0+ state in Ru-100 has been increased by 450 days, and a new result (combined with the previous measurement obtained with the same apparatus) for this transition is presented: T_(1/2) = [5.5 (+1.2/-0.8) (stat) +/- 0.…
A systematic study of the inclusive ($0ν+2ν$) double beta ($ββ$) decay of $^{100}$Mo to various excited final states of $^{100}$Ru was performed. Utilizing two large HPGe detectors operated in coincidence, a search for the subsequent deexcitation gamma-gamma cascades was conducted. A 1.05-kg sample of isotopically enriched (98.4%) $^{100}$Mo was investigated for 455 days, yielding an unambiguous observation of the double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the $0_1^+$ state (1130.3 keV) of $^{100}$Ru. This excited final state decays via the $0_1^+ \to 2_1^+ \to 0_{gs}^+$ sequence (with $E_{\gamma1}$ =…
Limits on $β^+$EC and ECEC processes in $^{112}$Sn and on $β^-β^-$ decay of $^{124}$Sn to the excited states of $^{124}$Te have been obtained using a 380 cm$^3$ HPGe detector and an external source consisting of natural tin. A limit with 90% C.L. on the $^{112}$Sn half-life of $0.92\times 10^{20}$ y for the ECEC(0$ν$) transition to the $0^+_3$ excited state in $^{112}$Cd (1871.0 keV) has been established. This transition is discussed in the context of a possible enhancement of the decay rate by several orders of magnitude given that the ECEC$(0ν)$ process is nearly degenerate with an excited s…
Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay is a phenomenon of fundamental interest in particle physics. The decay rates of double beta decay transitions to the excited states can provide input for Nuclear Transition Matrix Element calculations for the relevant two neutrino double beta decay process. It can be useful as supplementary information for the calculation of Nuclear Transition Matrix Element for the neutrinoless double beta decay process. In the present work, double beta decay of $^{94}$Zr to the $2^{+}_{1}$ excited state of $^{94}$Mo at 871.1 keV is studied using a low background $\sim$ 230 cm$^…
Branching ratios of $α$-decay to members of the ground state rotational band and excited 0$^{+}$ states of even-even nuclei are calculated in the framework of the generalized liquid drop model (GLDM) by taking into account the angular momentum of the $α$-particle and the excitation probability of the daughter nucleus. The calculation covers isotopic chains from Hg to Fm in the mass regions $180< A <202$ and A$\geq 224$. The calculated branching ratios of the $α$-transitions are in good agreement with the experimental data and some useful predictions are provided for future experiments.
We have observed an excited state in the neutron-rich semi-magic nucleus O-23 for the first time. No such states have been found in previous searches using gamma-ray spectroscopy. The observation of a resonance in n-fragment coincidence measurements confirms the speculation in the literature that the lowest excited state is neutron unbound and establishes positive evidence for a 2.8(1) MeV excitation energy of the first excited state in O-23. The non-observation of a predicted second excited state is explained assuming selectivity of inner-shell knockout reactions.
A search for double beta decays of $^{110}$Pd and $^{102}$Pd into excited states of the daughter nuclides has been performed using three ultra-low background gamma-spectrometry measurements in the Felsenkeller laboratory, Germany, the HADES laboratory, Belgium and at the LNGS, Italy. The combined Bayesian analysis of the three measurements sets improved half-life limits for the $2νββ$ and $0νββ$ decay modes of the $2^+_1$, $0^+_1$ and $2^+_2$ transitions in $^{110}$Pd to $2.9\cdot10^{20}$ yr, $4.0\cdot10^{20}$ yr and $3.0\cdot10^{20}$ yr respectively and in $^{102}$Pd to $7.6\cdot10^{18}$ yr, …
The first search for double electron capture ($2\varepsilon$) and electron capture with positron emission ($\varepsilonβ^+$) of $^{162}$Er to the ground state and to several excited levels of $^{162}$Dy was realized with 326 g of highly purified erbium oxide. The sample was measured over 1934 h by the ultra-low background HP Ge $γ$ spectrometer GeCris (465 cm$^3$) at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. No effect was observed, the half-life limits were estimated at the level of $\lim T_{1/2}\sim 10^{15}-10^{18}$ yr. A possible resonant $0νKL_1$ capture in $^{162}$Er to the $2^+$ 1782.7 keV e…
Recent observation of beta decay of 115-In to the first excited level of 115-Sn with an extremely low Q_beta value (Q_beta ~ 1 keV) could be used to set a limit on neutrino mass. To give restriction potentially competitive with those extracted from experiments with 3-H (~2 eV) and 187-Re (~15 eV), atomic mass difference between 115-In and 115-Sn and energy of the first 115-Sn level should be remeasured with higher accuracy (possibly of the order of ~1 eV).
$^{209}$Bi alpha decay to the ground and to the first excited state have been contemporary observed for the first time with a large BGO scintillating bolometer. The half-life of $^{209}$Bi is determined to be $τ_{1/2}$=(2.01$\pm$0.08)$\cdot10^{19}$ years while the branching ratio for the ground-state to ground-state transition is (98.8$\pm$0.3)%.
Double beta decay of $^{150}$Nd and $^{148}$Nd to the excited states of daughter nuclei have been studied using a 400 cm$^3$ low-background HPGe detector and an external source consisting of 3046 g of natural Nd$_2$O$_3$ powder. The half-life for the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{150}$Nd to the excited 0$^+_1$ state in $^{150}$Sm is measured to be $T_{1/2}=[1.33^{+0.36}_{-0.23}(stat)^{+0.27}_{-0.13}(syst)]\cdot 10^{20}$ y. For other $(0ν+ 2ν)$ transitions to the 2$^+_1$, 2$^+_2$, 2$^+_3$, and 0$^+_2$ levels in $^{150}$Sm, limits are obtained at the level of $\sim (2-8)\cdot 10^{20}$ y. …
Double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the excited states of daughter nuclei has been studied using a 600 cm$^3$ low-background HPGe detector and an external source consisting of 2588 g of 97.5% enriched metallic $^{100}$Mo, which was formerly inside the NEMO-3 detector and used for the NEMO-3 measurements of $^{100}$Mo. The half-life for the two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo to the excited 0$^+_1$ state in $^{100}$Ru is measured to be $T_{1/2}=[7.5 \pm{0.6}(stat) \pm {0.6}(syst)]\cdot 10^{20}$ yr. For other $(0ν+ 2ν)$ transitions to the 2$^+_1$, 2$^+_2$, 0$^+_2$, 2$^+_3$ and 0$^+_3$ le…
Studies of the 16O(9Be,alpha7Be)14C and 7Li(9Be,alpha7Li)5He reactions at E{beam}=70 MeV have been performed using resonant particle spectroscopy techniques. The 11C excited states decaying into alpha+7Be(gs) are observed at 8.65, 9.85, 10.7 and 12.1 MeV as well as possible states at 12.6 and 13.4 MeV. This result is the first observation of alpha-decay for excited states above 9 MeV. The alpha+7Li(gs) decay of 11B excited states at 9.2, 10.3, 10.55, 11.2, (11.4), 11.8, 12.5,(13.0), 13.1, (14.0), 14.35, (17.4) and (18.6) MeV is observed. The decay processes are used to indicate the possible th…
Neutrino accompanied double beta-decay of Ge-76 can populate the ground state and the excited states of Se-76. While the decay to the ground state has been observed with a half-life of 1.74 +0.18 -0.16 10^21 years, decays to the excited states have not yet been observed. Nuclear matrix elements depend on details of the nuclear transitions. A measurement of the half-life of the transition considered here could help to reduce the uncertainties of the calculations of the nuclear matrix element for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Ge-76. This parameter relates the half-life of the process to …
A study of the 7Li(9Be,4He 10Be)2H reaction at E{beam}=70 MeV has been performed using resonant particle spectroscopy techniques and provides the first measurements of alpha-decaying states in 14C. Excited states are observed at 14.7, 15.5, 16.4, 18.5, 19.8, 20.6, 21.4, 22.4 and 24.0 MeV. The experimental technique was able to resolve decays to the various particle bound states in 10Be, and provides evidence for the preferential decay of the high energy excited states into states in 10Be at ~6 MeV. The decay processes are used to indicate the possible cluster structure of the 14C excited state…
A search for excited state transitions of double beta decay in Pd110 and double electron capture in Pd102 has been performed in the HADES underground laboratory with two low background HPGe detectors in sandwich configuration. After an exposure of 35.92 kg*d, no signal was found. The frequentist spectral analysis resulted in lower half-life limits of 1.98e20 yr and 1.72e20 yr (95% CL) for the first 0+ and 2+ excited state in Pd110 respectively. This is an improvement by more than a factor of 3 with respect to previous measurements. In Pd102, the lower half-life limit could be improved to 5.95e…
Double beta decay of $^{136}$Xe to excited states of $^{136}$Ba (DBD-ES) has not yet been discovered experimentally yet. The experimental signature of such decays, one or two gamma rays following the beta signals, can be identified more effectively in a gaseous detector with the help of topological signatures. We have investigated key parameters of particle trajectories of DBD-ES with Monte Carlo simulation data of the proposed PandaX-III detector as an example. The background rates can be reduced by about one order of magnitude while keeping more than half of signals with topological analysis…
A search for double beta decays of the palladium isotopes 110Pd and 102Pd into excited states of their daughters was performed and first half-life limits for the 2νββ and 0νββ decays into first excited 0+ and 2+ states of 5.89e19 yr and 4.40e19 yr (95% CL) for the 110Pd decay were obtained. The half-life limits for the corresponding double electron capture transition of 102Pd are 7.64e18 yr and 2.68e18 yr (95% CL) respectively. These are the first measurements for 102Pd.
An excited state of $^{12}$C having excitation energy E$_x \sim$ 9.65 $\pm$ 0.02 MeV and width (FWHM) $\sim607\pm$ 55 keV, which decays to three $ α$-particles via Hoyle state ($E_x \sim$ 7.65 MeV), has been directly identified for the first time in the exclusive inelastic scattering of 60 MeV $^{4}$He on $^{12}$C, measured in coincidence with the recoiling $^{12}$C$ ^* $ Hoyle state (decaying mostly as $^{12}$C$ ^* $ $\rightarrow \ ^{8} $Be + $ α$ $\rightarrow \ α+ α+ α$) by event-by-event kinematic reconstruction of the completely detected (4$ α$) events. This state is likely to be a candida…
Double-beta decay is a rare nuclear process in which two neutrons in the nucleus are converted to two protons with the emission of two electrons and two electron anti-neutrinos. We measured the half life of the two-neutrino double-beta decay of $^{150}$Nd to excited final states of $^{150}$Sm by detecting the de-excitation gamma rays of the daughter nucleus. This study yields the first detection of the coincidence gamma rays from the 0$^+_1$ excited state of $^{150}$Sm. These gamma rays have energies of 333.97 keV and 406.52 keV, and are emitted in coincidence through a 0$^+_1\rightarrow$2$^+_…
One of the prominent decay modes of heavy nuclei which are produced in astrophysical environments at temperatures of the order of $10^9$ K is the $α$ ($^4$He) decay. Thermally enhanced $α$ decay rates are evaluated within the standard scheme of a tunneling decay where the $α$ particle tunnels through the potential barrier formed by its interaction with the daughter nucleus. Following the observation that there exist several excited levels with the possibility of an $α$ decay when the daughter nucleus is at a shell closure, we focus in particular on decays producing daughter nuclei with the neu…
We calculate the nuclear matrix element for the two-neutrino $ββ$ decay of $^{136}$Xe into the first excited $0^+$ state of $^{136}$Ba. We use different many-body methods: the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) framework, the nuclear shell model, the interacting boson model (IBM-2), and an effective field theory (EFT) for $β$ and $ββ$ decays. While the QRPA suggests a decay rate at the edge of current experimental limits, the shell model points to a half-life about two orders of magnitude longer. The predictions of the IBM-2 and the EFT lie in between, and the latter provides syst…
Given existing empirical spectral patterns of excited hadrons it has been suggested that chiral symmetry is approximately restored in excited hadrons at zero temperature/density (effective symmetry restoration). If correct, this implies that mass generation mechanisms and physics in excited hadrons is very different as compared to the lowest states. One needs an alternative and independent experimental information to confirm this conjecture. Using very general chiral symmetry arguments it is shown that strict chiral restoration in a given excited nucleon forbids its decay into the N πchannel. …
