We examine Simplified Models in which fermionic DM interacts with Standard Model (SM) fermions via the exchange of an $s$-channel scalar mediator. The single-mediator version of this model is not gauge invariant, and instead we must consider models with two scalar mediators which mix and interfere. The minimal gauge invariant scenario involves the mixing of a new singlet scalar with the Standard Model Higgs boson, and is tightly constrained. We construct two Higgs doublet model (2HDM) extensions of this scenario, where the singlet mixes with the 2nd Higgs doublet. Compared with the one doublet model, this provides greater freedom for the masses and mixing angle of the scalar mediators, and their coupling to SM fermions. We outline constraints on these models, and discuss Yukawa structures that allow enhanced couplings, yet keep potentially dangerous flavour violating process under control. We examine the direct detection phenomenology of these models, accounting for interference of the scalar mediators, and interference of different quarks in the nucleus. Regions of parameter space consistent with direct detection measurements are determined.
We consider simplified dark matter models where a dark matter candidate couples to the standard model (SM) particles via an $s$-channel spin-2 mediator, and study constraints on the model parameter space from the current LHC data. Our focus lies on the complementarity among different searches, in particular monojet and multijet plus missing energy searches and resonance searches. For universal couplings of the mediator to SM particles, missing-energy searches can give stronger constraints than $WW$, $ZZ$, dijet, dihiggs, $t\bar t$, $b\bar b$ resonance searches in the low-mass region and/or whe…
We review simplified models in which a singlet Majorana dark matter candidate couples to Standard Model (SM) fermions through interactions mediated by scalar fermion partners. We summarize the two primary production mechanisms in these scenarios: dark matter annihilation mediated by first or second generation scalar fermion partners with significant left-right chiral mixing and co-annihilation with scalar fermion partners nearly degenerate in mass with the dark matter. We then highlight the most interesting phenomenological aspects of charged mediator models relevant for current and future sea…
We present a reanalysis of the latest results from CMS dijet searches for an integrated luminosity of $36\,$fb$^{-1}$ together with preliminary results for $78\,$fb$^{-1}$ in the framework of simplified models for dark matter interacting with quarks through the exchange of a scalar, pseudoscalar, vector or pseudovector mediator particle. Within the same framework, we also project the sensitivity of dijet searches in future LHC runs and study how well the parameters of a simplified model could be reconstructed in case of a future discovery at the high luminosity (HL) LHC. Finally, we explore th…
We consider direct detection prospects for a class of simplified models of fermionic dark matter (DM) coupled to left and right-handed Standard Model fermions via two charged scalar mediators with arbitrary mixing angle $α$. DM interactions with the nucleus are mediated by higher electromagnetic moments, which, for Majorana DM, is the anapole moment. After giving a full analytic calculation of the anapole moment, including its $α$ dependence, and matching with limits in the literature, we compute the DM-nucleon scattering cross-section and show the LUX and future LZ constraints on the paramete…
In this work we perform an analysis of the recent AMS-02 antiproton flux and the antiproton-to-proton ratio in the framework of simplified dark matter models. To predict the AMS-02 observables we adopt the propagation and injection parameters determined by the observed fluxes of nuclei. We assume that the dark matter particle is a Dirac fermionic dark matter, with leptophobic pseudoscalar or axialvector mediator that couples only to Standard Model quarks and dark matter particles. We find that the AMS-02 observations are consistent with the dark matter hypothesis within the uncertainties. The …
Weakly interacting dark matter particles can be pair-produced at colliders and detected through signatures featuring missing energy in association with either QCD/EW radiation or heavy quarks. In order to constrain the mass and the couplings to standard model particles, accurate and precise predictions for production cross sections and distributions are of prime importance. In this work, we consider various simplified models with s-channel mediators. We implement such models in the FeynRules/MadGraph5_aMC@NLO framework, which allows to include higher-order QCD corrections in realistic simulati…
The light mediator scenario of self-interacting dark matter is strongly constrained in many ways. After summarizing the various constraints, we discuss minimal options and models which allow to nevertheless satisfy all these constraints. One straightforward possibility arises if the dark matter and light mediator particles have a temperature sizably smaller than the SM particles. Another simple possibility arises if dark matter doesn't annihilate dominantly into a pair of light mediators but into heavier particles. Both possibilities are discussed with scalar as well as vector boson light medi…
We examine the phenomenology of a simplified model of fermionic dark matter coupled to a light scalar mediator carrying lepton number 2. We find that the mediator can be very light and still consistent with laboratory and cosmological bounds. This model satisfies the thermal relic condition for natural values of dimensionless coupling constants and admits a mediator in the $10 - 100 ~\text{MeV}$ mass range favored by small scale structure observations. As such, this model provides an excellent candidate for self-interacting dark matter.
A simple and elegant mechanism is proposed to resolve the problem of having a light scalar mediator for self-interacting dark matter and the resulting disruption to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at late times by the former's enhanced Sommerfeld production and decay. The crucial idea is to have Dirac neutrinos with the conservation of U(1) lepton number extended to the dark sector. The simplest scenario consists of scalar or fermion dark matter with unit lepton number accompanied by a light scalar dilepton mediator, which decays to two neutrinos.
The ultraviolet structure of $s$-channel mediator dark matter simplified models at hadron colliders is considered. In terms of commonly studied $s$-channel mediator simplified models it is argued that at arbitrarily high energies the perturbative description of dark matter production in high energy scattering at hadron colliders will break down in a number of cases. This is analogous to the well documented breakdown of an EFT description of dark matter collider production. With this in mind, to diagnose whether or not the use of simplified models at the LHC is valid, perturbative unitarity of …
We consider associated production of dark matter with single top quark, in a simplified dark matter model with spin-0 mediators. The produced top quark is polarized and the polarization depends on the CP of the mediator. We calculate both the cross-section and top polarization for these processes. We compute angular asymmetries which demonstrate the difference between the polarization expected for the scalar or pseudoscalar mediator. Both the cross section and top polarization are sensitive to the CP property of the mediator, depending on the mediator mass. We find that these polarization asym…
We study dark matter freeze-in scenarios where the mass of the mediator particle that couples dark matter to the Standard Model is larger than the reheat temperature, TRH, in the early Universe. In such setups, the standard approach is to work with an effective field theory (EFT) where the mediator is integrated out. We examine the validity of this approach in various generic s- and t-channel mediator frameworks. We find that the EFT approach breaks down when the mediator mass is between one to two orders of magnitude larger than TRH due to various effects such as s-channel resonance, a small …
We discuss some aspects of dark matter phenomenology, in particular related to Direct detection and collider searches, of models in which a fermionic Dark Matter interacts with SM fermions through spin 1 mediators. Contrary to conventional simplified models we will consider fixed assignments of the couplings of the ($Z^{'}$) mediator, according theoretically motivated embeddings. This allows to predict signals at future experimental facilities which can be used to test and possibly discriminate different realizations.
We study a renormalizable scalar singlet dark matter model based on $Z_4$ lepton flavor symmetry. A $μτ$-philic scalar doublet is introduced to explain the discrepancy between the experimental value and the theoretical prediction of the muon anomalous magnetic moment. At the same time, these flavored scalars play the role of a mediator which connects dark matter and standard model particles. The observed relic abundance of the dark matter is easily maintained while satisfying the current severe constraints on the dark matter from various experiments and observations thanks to the flavor off-di…
We study the interactions of a new spin-1 mediator that connects the Standard Model to dark matter. We constrain its decay channels using monojet and monophoton searches, as well as searches for resonances in dijet, dilepton and diboson final states including those involving a possible Higgs. We then interpret the resulting limits as bounds on the cross-section for dark matter direct detection without the need to specify a particular model. For mediator masses between 300 and 1000 GeV these bounds are considerably stronger than the ones obtained under the assumption that the mediator can be in…
We study the phenomenology of singlet Dirac fermion dark matter in the simplified models where the dark matter interacts with the Standard Model particles at loop-level with the help of either colored or non-colored mediators. We especially focus on the implications of non-zero CP phases in the dark sector, which induce the electric dipole moments of the Dirac fermion dark matter as well as those of electron and nucleon. It is then found that the dark matter direct detection searches and the measurements of the electric dipole moments are able to test the singlet Dirac fermion dark matter scen…
We investigate simplified models of dark matter with scalar mediators at hadron colliders using the final state topology with 2 jets and missing energy. These models can arise in a wide variety of BSM scenarios including the possibility of the mediator mixing with the Higgs. Our aim is first to determine the projected reach of the LHC and the future circular hadron collider for excluding such models. Secondly, we use the kinematic distributions to extract information on mediator masses. At the 13 TeV LHC we can probe mediator masses up to 750 GeV, and at a 100 TeV collider the reach is increas…
The general strategy for dark matter (DM) searches at colliders currently relies on simplified models. In this paper, we propose a new $t$-channel UV-complete simplified model that improves the existing simplified DM models in two important respects: (i) we impose the full SM gauge symmetry including the fact that the left-handed and the right-handed fermions have two independent mediators with two independent couplings, and (ii) we include the renormalization group evolution when we derive the effective Lagrangian for DM-nucleon scattering from the underlying UV complete models by integrating…
We consider models where a massive spin-two resonance acts as the mediator between Dark Matter (DM) and the SM particles through the energy-momentum tensor. We examine the effective theory for fermion, vector and scalar DM generated in these models and find novel types of DM-SM interaction never considered before. We identify the effective interactions between DM and the SM quarks when the mediator is integrated out, and match them to the gravitational form factors relevant for spin-independent DM-nucleon scattering. We also discuss the interplay between DM relic density conditions, direct det…

We test the plausibility that a Majorana fermion dark matter candidate with a scalar mediator explains the gamma ray excess from the Galactic center. Assuming that the mediator couples to all third generation fermions we calculate observables for dark matter abundance and scattering on nuclei, gamma, positron, and anti-proton cosmic ray fluxes, radio emission from dark matter annihilation, and the effect of dark matter annihilations on the CMB. After discarding the controversial radio observation the rest of the data prefers a dark matter (mediator) mass in the 10-100 (3-1000) GeV region and w…
We show how studies relevant for mono-X searches at the LHC in simplified models featuring a dark matter candidate and an $s$-channel mediator can be performed within the MadGraph5_aMC@NLO framework. We focus on gluon-initiated loop-induced processes, mostly relevant to the case where the mediator couples preferentially to third generation quarks and in particular to the top quark. Our implementation allows us to study signatures at hadron colliders involving missing transverse energy plus jets or plus neutral bosons ($γ,Z,H$), possibly including the effects of extra radiation by multi-parton …
In the singlet-triplet majoron model of neutrino mass, lepton number is spontaneously broken. If it is also softly broken, then a naturally light pseudoscalar particle $η_I$ exists. It may then act as a light mediator for a real singlet scalar $χ$ with odd dark parity. It is itself unstable, but decays dominantly to two neutrinos through its triplet scalar component, thereby not disturbing the cosmic microwave background (CMB). It also mixes with the standard-model Higgs boson only in one loop, thereby not contributing significantly to the elastic scattering of $χ$ off nuclei in dark-matter di…
We present here a study of the direct and indirect detection prospects of a generic dark matter simplified model, in which the Majorana dark matter interacts only with a Standard Model lepton and a pair of uncolored mixing scalar mediators. We first show that the mixing angle significantly changes the feature of internal bremsstrahlung, as well as the flux ratio of $γγ$ and $γZ$ line signals. The $CP$-violation phase will introduce an polarization asymmetry in the $γγ$ final state. Then we study the direct detection prospect and discuss the complimentarity of these two search strategies.
It has been found that a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson dark matter suppresses the amplitude for elastic scattering with nuclei in non-relativistic limit, and thus can naturally evade the strong constraint of dark matter direct detection experiments. In this paper, we show that non-zero elastic scattering cross section can be induced if the mediator mass is as small as momentum transfer. The predicted recoil energy spectrum can differ from that for usual thermal dark matter. Together with the relevant constraints such as thermal relic abundance, indirect detection and Higgs decays, we investigat…
Three main strategies are being pursued to search for non-gravitational dark matter signals: direct detection, indirect detection and collider searches. Interestingly, experiments have reached sensitivities in these three search strategies which may allow detection in the near future. In order to take full benefit of the wealth of experimental data, and in order to confirm a possible dark matter signal, it is necessary to specify the nature of the dark matter particle and of the mediator to the Standard Model. In this paper, we focus on a simplified model where the dark matter particle is a Ma…
We investigate the signatures at the Large Hadron Collider of a minimal model where the dark matter particle is a Majorana fermion that couples to the Standard Model via one or several coloured mediators. We emphasize the importance of the production channel of coloured scalars through the exchange of a dark matter particle in the t-channel, and perform a dedicated analysis of searches for jets and missing energy for this model. We find that the collider constraints are highly competitive compared to direct detection, and can even be considerably stronger over a wide range of parameters. We al…
In this work we numerically re-examine the loop-induced WIMP-nucleon scattering cross section for the simplified dark matter models and the constraint set by the latest direct detection experiment. We consider a fermion, scalar or vector dark matter component from five simplified models with leptophobic spin-0 mediators coupled only to Standard Model quarks and dark matter particles. The tree-level WIMP-nucleon cross sections in these models are all momentum-suppressed. We calculate the non-suppressed spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross sections from loop diagrams and investigate the constrain…

We study dark matter interacting via a massive spin-2 mediator. To have a consistent effective theory for the spin-2 particle, we work in a warped extra-dimensional model such that the mediator(s) are the Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes of the 5D graviton. We pay close attention to dark matter annihilations into KK-gravitons. Due to the high energy behavior of longitudinal modes of spin-2 fields, these channels exhibit a tremendous growth at large center of mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ if only one spin-2 mediator is considered. For the first time, we include the full KK-tower in this dark matter productio…
We consider a minimal renormalizable and gauge invariant dark matter (DM) model, in which the singlet fermion DM has only axial couplings to a new pseudoscalar mediator. The mixing between the pseudoscalar mediator and the standard model (SM) Higgs boson induces the interactions between the DM and SM particles. The DM candidate in this model can provide the correct thermal relic density and evades all direct detections, while it can produce observable signals in indirect detection experiments due to its large annihilation cross section. A comparative study for DM phenomenology at the LHC is co…
We study the influence of leptophilic dark matter interactions on decays of muons and ground state mesons in existing experiments. We consider a secluded dark sector exclusively interacting with leptons via either a (leptophilic) scalar or vector mediator. These interactions will therefore influence leptonic decays and deform the energy spectra. We first study the Michel decay of muons, $μ^+\rightarrow e^+ν_e \barν_μ$, which allow us to constrain the parameter space reasonably well. Secondly, the rare $π^\pm$, $K^\pm$, $D^\pm$ and $D_s^\pm$ decays to $eν$ will be considered. Scalar mediators w…
If dark matter (DM) couples to a force carrier that is much lighter than itself, then it may form bound states in the early universe and inside haloes. While bound-state formation via vector emission is known to be efficient and have a variety of phenomenological implications, the capture via scalar emission typically requires larger couplings and is relevant to more limited parameter space, due to cancellations in the radiative amplitude. However, this result takes into account only the trilinear DM-DM-mediator coupling. Theories with scalar mediators include also a scalar potential, whose co…
In this paper we study the impact of a scalar exchange on the dark matter relic abundance by solving a plasma-modified Schroedinger equation. A simplified model is considered where a Majorana dark matter fermion is embedded in a U(1)$'$ extension of the Standard Model and couples with a dark Higgs via a Yukawa interaction. We find that the dark-Higgs exchange can increase the overclosure bounds significantly. For the largest (smallest) value of the Yukawa coupling examined in this work, the dark matter mass is lifted from 5 TeV (0.55 TeV) to 27 TeV (0.70 TeV).
A light fermionic weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter is investigated by studying its minimal renormalizable model, where it requires a scalar mediator to have an interaction between the WIMP and standard model particles. We perform a comprehensive likelihood analysis of the model involving the latest but robust constraints and those will be obtained in the near future. In addition, we pay particular attention to properly take the kinematically equilibrium condition into account. It is shown that near-future experiments and observations such as low-mass direct dark matter de…
Dark matter models with light mediators featuring sizable interactions among dark particles enjoy an increasing attention in the model building community due to the elegance with which they can potentially explain the scaling relations governing galactic halos and clusters of galaxies. In the present work we continue our study of such models using non-relativistic and potential non-relativistic effective field theories (NREFTs and pNREFTs) and explore the properties of a Yukawa-type model with scalar and pseudoscalar interactions between a low-energetic scalar mediator and heavy dark matter fe…
We introduce dark mediator Dark matter (dmDM) where the dark and visible sectors are connected by at least one light mediator $ϕ$ carrying the same dark charge that stabilizes DM. $ϕ$ is coupled to the Standard Model via an operator $\bar q q ϕϕ^*/Λ$, and to dark matter via a Yukawa coupling $y_χ\overline{χ^c}χϕ$. Direct detection is realized as the $2\rightarrow3$ process $χN \rightarrow \bar χN ϕ$ at tree-level for $m_ϕ\lesssim 10 \ \mathrm{keV}$ and small Yukawa coupling, or alternatively as a loop-induced $2\rightarrow2$ process $χN \rightarrow χN$. We explore the direct-detection conseque…
We study a new class of renormalisable simplified models for dark matter searches at the LHC that are based on two Higgs doublet models with an additional pseudoscalar mediator. In contrast to the spin-0 simplified models employed in analyses of Run I data these models are self-consistent, unitary and bounds from Higgs physics typically pose no constraints. Predictions for various missing transverse energy ($E_{T, \rm miss}$) searches are discussed and the reach of the 13 TeV LHC is explored. It is found that the proposed models provide a rich spectrum of complementary observables that lead to…
Using the latest PandaX limits on light dark matter (DM) with light mediator, we check the implication on the parameter space of the general singlet extension of MSSM (without $Z_3$ symmetry), which can have a sizable DM self-interaction to solve the small-scale structure problem. We find that the PandaX limits can stringently constrain such a paramter space, depending on the coupling $λ$ between the singlet and doublet Higgs fields. For the singlet extension of MSSM with $Z_3$ symmetry, the so-called NMSSM, we also demonstrate the PandaX constraints on its parameter space which gives a light …
We investigate the phenomenology of a dark matter scenario containing two generations of the dark matter particle, differing only by their mass and their couplings to the other particles, akin to the quark and lepton sectors of the Standard Model. For concreteness, we consider the case where the two dark matter generations are Majorana fermions that couple to a right-handed lepton and a scalar mediator through Yukawa couplings. We identify different production regimes in the multi-flavor dark matter scenario and we argue that in some parts of the parameter space the heavier generation can play…
The observation of a protophobic 16.7 MeV vector boson has been reported by a $^8$Be nuclear transition experiment. Such a new particle could mediate between the Standard Model and a dark sector, which includes the dark matter. In this paper, we show some simple models of the dark matter which satisfy the thermal relic abundance under the current experimental bounds from the direct and the indirect detections. In a model, it is found that an appropriate self-scattering cross section to solve the small scale structure puzzles can be achieved.
Inspired by the recently new measurement of $(g-2)_μ$ at FermiLab and reported upper bound for electron-dark matter (DM) recoil by the XENON1T collaboration, we revisited phenomenology of a light MeV scale vector dark matter in a leptophilic extension of standard model while a new spinor field plays the role of mediator. A viable parameter space is considered to discuss the possibility of light dark matter relic density as well as anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We study DM-electron direct detection and cosmological bounds on the parameters space of the model. It is shown that although …
Light scalars appear in many well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model including supersymmetric models with additional gauge singlets. Such scalars could mediate the interactions between dark matter and nuclei, giving rise to the tentative signals observed by several dark matter direct detection experiments including CDMS-Si. In this letter, we derive strong new limits on light scalar mediators by using the LHCb, Belle and BaBar searches for rare $Υ$ and B decays. These limits rule out significant parts of the parameter space favored by CDMS-Si. Nevertheless, as current searches are not …
Self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) is a simple and well-motivated scenario that could explain long-standing puzzles in structure formation on small scales. If the required self-interaction arises through a light mediator (with mass $\sim 10$ MeV) in the dark sector, this new particle must be unstable to avoid overclosing the universe. The decay of the light mediator could happen due to a weak coupling of the hidden and visible sectors, providing new signatures for direct detection experiments. The SIDM nuclear recoil spectrum is more peaked towards low energies compared to the usual case of c…
The relic abundance of the dark matter (DM) particle $d$ is studied in a secluded DM scenario, in which the $d$ number decreasing process dominantly occurs not through the pair annihilation of $d$ into the standard model particles, but via the $dd \to mm$ scattering process with a subsequently decaying mediator particle $m$. It is pointed out that the cosmologically observed relic abundance of DM can be accomplished even with a massive mediator having a mass $m_m$ non-negligibly heavy compared with the DM particle mass $m_d$. In the degenerated $d$-$m$ case ($m_d=m_m$), the DM relic abundance …
We introduce a Minimal Simplified Dark Matter (MSDM) framework to quantitatively characterise dark matter (DM) searches at the LHC. We study two MSDM models where the DM is a Dirac fermion which interacts with a vector and axial-vector mediator. The models are characterised by four parameters: the DM and mediator masses, and the mediator couplings to DM and quarks. The MSDM models accurately capture the full event kinematics, and the dependence on all masses and couplings can be systematically studied. The interpretation of mono-jet searches in this framework can be used to establish an equal-…
In the simplified dark matter models commonly studied, the mass generation mechanism for the dark fields is not typically specified. We demonstrate that the dark matter interaction types, and hence the annihilation processes relevant for relic density and indirect detection, are strongly dictated by the mass generation mechanism chosen for the dark sector particles, and the requirement of gauge invariance. We focus on the class of models in which fermionic dark matter couples to a spin-1 vector or axial-vector mediator. However, in order to generate dark sector mass terms, it is necessary in m…
