The supernova remnant (SNR) N49B in the Large Magellanic Cloud is a peculiar example of a core-collapse SNR to show the shocked metal-rich ejecta enriched only in Mg without evidence for a similar overabundance in O and Ne. Based on archival Chandra data we present results from our extensive spatially-resolved spectral analysis of N49B. We find that the Mg-rich ejecta gas extends from the central regions of the SNR out to the southeastern outermost boundary of the SNR. This elongated feature shows an overabundance for Mg similar to that of the main ejecta region at the SNR center, and its electron temperature appears to be higher than the central main ejecta gas. We estimate that the Mg mass in this southeastern elongated ejecta feature is ~10% of the total Mg ejecta mass. Our estimated lower limit of >0.1 M_sun on the total mass of the Mg-rich ejecta confirms the previously-suggested large mass for the progenitor star (M > ~25 M_sun). We entertain scenarios of an SNR expanding into a non-uniform medium and an energetic jet-driven supernova in an attempt to interpret these results. However, with the current results, the origins of the extended Mg-rich ejecta and the Mg-only-rich nature of the overall metal-rich ejecta in this SNR remain elusive.
We performed general relativistic, long-term, axisymmetric neutrino radiation hydrodynamics simulations for the remnant formed after the binary neutron star merger, which consist of a massive neutron star and a torus surrounding it. As an initial condition, we employ the result derived in a three-dimensional, numerical relativity simulation for the binary neutron star merger. We investigate the properties of neutrino-driven ejecta. Due to the pair-annihilation heating, the dynamics of the neutrino-driven ejecta is significantly modified. The kinetic energy of the ejecta is about two times larg…
Clumpy structures are a common feature in X-ray images of young Type Ia supernova remnants (SNRs). Although the precise origin of such clumps remains unclear there are three generic possibilities: clumpiness imposed during the explosion, hydrodynamic instabilities that act during the remnant's evolution, and pre-existing structures in the ambient medium. In this article we focus on discriminating between clumping distributions that arise from the explosion and those from the remnant's evolution using existing 3D hydrodynamical simulations. We utilize the genus statistic for this discrimination…
We report on the results from our measurements of the interstellar medium (ISM) abundances for the elements O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We used the archival Chandra data for sixteen supernova remnants (SNRs) in the LMC (0453--68.5, DEM L71, N23, 0519--69.0, N49B, N132D, N49, N206, 0534--69.9, DEM L238, N63A, Honeycomb, N157B, 0540--69.3, DEM L316B, and 0548--70.4). Our results represent LMC abundance measurements based on the modern Chandra data. We place tight constraints on our measured elemental abundances and find lower abundances than previous measurements b…
This thesis is devoted to the analysis of X-ray observations of supernova remnants (SNRs), exploiting the diagnostic potential provided by X-ray spectroscopy and complementing it with the synthesis of X-ray observables from multi-dimensional hydrodynamic (HD) and magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) models. I tackle three open issues: the search for a spectral signature to correctly recover abundance and mass values of the stellar fragments ejected in the SN explosion through their X-ray spectra; the study of anisotropies and the origin of overionized plasma in the mixed-morphology SNR IC 443; the quest…
I outline the dynamical evolution of the shell remnants of supernovae (SNRs), from initial interaction of supernova ejecta with circumstellar material (CSM) through to the final dissolution of the remnant into the interstellar medium (ISM). Supernova ejecta drive a blast wave through any CSM from the progenitor system; as material is swept up, a reverse shock forms in the ejecta, reheating them. This ejecta-driven phase lasts until ten or more times the ejected mass is swept up, and the remnant approaches the Sedov or self-similar evolutionary phase. The evolution up to this time is approximat…
G292.0+1.8 (G292) is a young ($\sim$3000 yr), Galactic textbook-type core-collapse supernova remnant (CCSNR). It is characterized by X-ray, optical and infrared emission from ejecta and circumstellar medium (CSM) features, and contains a pulsar (PSR J1124-5916) and pulsar wind nebula that have been observed in X-rays and radio. Previous studies have revealed a complex, dynamically evolving, oxygen-rich remnant, a striking relic from the explosion of a massive star. Here, using our deep (530 ks) $\textit{Chandra}$ ACIS data, we present high spatial-resolution maps (based on a regional grid size…
We present the first direct ejecta velocity measurements of Tycho's supernova remnant (SNR). Chandra's high angular resolution images reveal a patchy structure of radial velocities in the ejecta that can be separated into distinct redshifted, blueshifted, and low velocity ejecta clumps or blobs. The typical velocities of the redshifted and blueshifted blobs are <~ 7,800 km/s and <~ 5,000 km/s, respectively. The highest velocity blobs are located near the center, while the low velocity ones appear near the edge as expected for a generally spherical expansion. Systematic uncertainty on the veloc…
Neutron star mergers produce a substantial amount of fast-moving ejecta, expanding outwardly for years after the merger. The interaction of these ejecta with the surrounding medium may produce a weak isotropic radio remnant, detectable in relatively nearby events. We use late-time radio observations of short duration gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs) to constrain this model. Two samples of events were studied: four sGRBs that are possibly in the local (<200 Mpc) universe were selected to constrain the remnant non-thermal emission from the sub-relativistic ejecta, whereas 17 sGRBs at cosmological distan…
The ejecta kinematics of supernova remnants (SNRs) is one of crucial clues to understand the explosion mechanism of type Ia supernovae (SNe). In particular, the kinematic asymmetry of iron-peak elements provides the key to understanding physical processes taking place in the core of the exploding white dwarfs (WDs) although it has been poorly understood by observations. In this paper, we show for the first time the asymmetric expansion structure in the line-of-sight direction of Fe ejecta in Kepler's SNR revealed by spectral and imaging analysis using the Chandra archival data. We found that t…
Abridged. We aim at exploring to which extent the remnant keeps memory of the asymmetries that develop stochastically in the neutrino-heating layer due to hydrodynamic instabilities (e.g., convective overturn and the standing accretion shock instability) during the first second after core bounce. We coupled a 3D HD model of a neutrino-driven SN explosion with 3D MHD/HD simulations of the remnant formation. The simulations cover 2000 years of expansion and include all physical processes relevant to describe the complexities in the SN evolution and the subsequent interaction of the stellar debri…
We construct the most complete sample of supernova remnants (SNRs) in any galaxy - the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) SNR sample. We study their various properties such as spectral index ($α$), size and surface-brightness. We suggest an association between the spatial distribution, environment density of LMC SNRs and their tendency to be located around supergiant shells. We find evidence that the 16 known type Ia LMC SNRs are expanding in a lower density environment compared to the Core-Collapse (CC) type. The mean diameter of our entire population (74) is 41 pc, which is comparable to nearby ga…
We probe the environmental properties of X-ray supernova remnants (SNRs) at various points along their evolutionary journey, especially the S-T phase, and their conformance with theoretically derived models of SNR evolution. The remnant size is used as a proxy for the age of the remnant. Our data set includes 34 Milky Way, 59 Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and 5 Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) SNRs. We select remnants that have been definitively typed as either core-collapse (CC) or Type Ia supernovae, with well-defined size estimates, and a thermal X-ray flux measured over the entire remnant. A c…
Dynamics of X-Ray-Emitting Ejecta in the Oxygen-Rich Supernova Remnant Puppis A Revealed by the XMM-Newton RGS
We present the first three-dimensional measurements of the velocity of various ejecta knots in Tycho's supernova remnant, known to result from a Type Ia explosion. Chandra X-ray observations over a 12-year baseline from 2003 to 2015 allow us to measure the proper motion of nearly 60 "tufts" of Si-rich ejecta, giving us the velocity in the plane of the sky. For the line of sight velocity, we use two different methods: a non-equilibrium ionization model fit to the strong Si and S lines in the 1.2-2.8 keV regime, and a fit consisting of a series of Gaussian lines. These methods give consistent re…
We present a 190 ks observation of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G306.3-0.9 with Suzaku. To study ejecta properties of this possible Type Ia SNR, the absolute energy scale at the Fe-K band was calibrated to a level of uncertainty less than 10 eV by a cross-calibration with the Hitomi microcalorimeter using the Perseus cluster spectra. This enabled us for the first time to accurately determine the ionization state of the Fe K$α$ line of this SNR. The ionization timescale ($τ$) of the Fe ejecta was measured to be $\log_{10} τ$ (cm$^{-3}$ s) $=10.24\pm0.03$, significantly smaller than prev…
We report Chandra observations of the highly asymmetric core-collapse supernova remnant G350.1-0.3. We document expansion over 9 years away from the roughly stationary central compact object, with sky-plane velocities up to $5000 d_{4.5}$ km s$^{-1}$ ($d_{4.5}$ is the distance in units of 4.5 kpc), redshifts ranging from 900 km s$^{-1}$ to 2600 km s$^{-1}$, and three-dimensional space velocities approaching 6000 km s$^{-1}$. Most of the bright emission comes from heavy-element ejecta particularly strong in iron. Iron-enhanced ejecta are seen at 4000 - 6000 km s$^{-1}$, strongly suggesting that…

We report our measurements of the bulk radial velocity from a sample of small, metal-rich ejecta knots in Kepler's Supernova Remnant (SNR). We measure the Doppler shift of the He-like Si K$α$ line center energy in the spectra of these knots based on our $Chandra$ High-Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) observation to estimate their radial velocities. We estimate high radial velocities of up to $\sim$ 8,000 km s$^{-1}$ for some of these ejecta knots. We also measure proper motions for our sample based on the archival $Chandra$ Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) data taken in…
We present our velocity measurements of 59 clumpy, metal-rich ejecta knots in the supernova remnant (SNR) of SN 1572 (Tycho). We use our 450 ks Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer observation to measure the Doppler shift of the He-like Si K$α$ line-center wavelength emitted from these knots to find their line-of-sight (radial) velocities ($v_r$). We find $v_r$ up to $\sim$ 5500 km s$^{-1}$, with roughly consistent speeds between blueshifted and redshifted ejecta knots. We also measure the proper motions (PMs) for our sample based on archival Chandra Advanced CCD Imaging Spect…
We perform long-term general relativistic neutrino radiation hydrodynamics simulations (in axisymmetry) for a massive neutron star (MNS) surrounded by a torus, which is a canonical remnant formed after the binary neutron star merger. We take into account the effects of viscosity, which is likely to arise in the merger remnant due to magnetohydrodynamical turbulence. As the initial condition, we employ the azimuthally averaged data of the MNS-torus system derived in a three-dimensional, numerical-relativity simulation for the binary neutron star merger. The viscous effect plays key roles for th…
Supernova remnant (SNR) G309.2-0.6 has a peculiar radio morphology with two bright ears to the southwest and northeast, although the main shell outside the ears is roughly circular. Based on an earlier proposal that the supernova ejecta has a jet component with extra energy, the dynamical evolution of the remnant is solved using 3D hydrodynamical (HD) simulation to investigate the formation of the periphery of the remnant. Assuming the ejecta with a kinetic energy of $10^{51}$\,erg and a mass of $3~\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ evolved in a uniform ambient medium for a time of $\sim 4000$\,yr and the je…
We present results from {\it XMM-Newton/RGS} observations of prominent knots in the southest portion of Tycho's supernova remnant, known to be the remnant of a Type Ia SN in 1572 C.E. By dispersing the photons from these knots out of the remnant with very little emission in front of or behind them, we obtained the nearly uncontaminated spectra of the knots. In the southernmost knot, the RGS successfully resolved numerous emission lines from Si, Ne, O He$α$ and Ly$α$, and Fe L-shell. This is the first clear detection of O lines in Tycho's SNR. Line broadening was measured to be $\sim 3$ eV for …
Kepler's supernova remnant (SNR) is believed to result from a Type Ia supernova, but be interacting with dense circumstellar material (CSM), which makes its progenitor system a mystery. Using the Chandra ACIS-S 741 ks effective exposure data and an advanced adaptive binning algorithm, we analyse the spectra from tessellated regions in Kepler's SNR. For the first time, we map out the detailed spatial distributions of emission measure (EM), electron temperature, ionization parameter, and metal abundances for both the low- and high-temperature plasma components. The low-temperature plasma diverge…
Neutrinos emitted in the coalescence of two neutron stars affect the dynamics of the outflow ejecta and the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements. In this work, we analyze the neutrino emission properties and the conditions leading to the growth of flavor instabilities in merger remnants consisting of a hypermassive neutron star and an accretion disk during the first 10 ms after the merger. The analyses are based on hydrodynamical simulations that include a modeling of neutrino emission and absorption effects via the "Improved Leakage-Equilibration-Absorption Scheme" (ILEAS). We also examine the n…
We present a third epoch of Chandra observations of the Type Ia Large Magellanic Cloud Supernova remnant (SNR) 0509-67.5. With these new observations from 2020, the baseline for proper motion measurements of the expansion has grown to 20 years (from the earliest Chandra observations in 2000). We report here the results of these new expansion measurements. The lack of nearby bright point sources renders absolute image alignment difficult. However, we are able to measure the average expansion of the diameter of the remnant along several projection directions. We find that the remnant is expandin…
Spectral analysis of X-ray emission from ejecta in supernova remnants (SNRs) is hampered by the low spectral resolution of CCD cameras, which creates a degeneracy between the best-fit values of abundances and emission measure. The combined contribution of shocked ambient medium and ejecta to the X-ray emission complicates the determination of the ejecta mass and chemical composition, leading to big uncertainties in mass estimates and it can introduce a bias in the comparison between the observed ejecta composition and the yields predicted by explosive nucleosynthesis. We explore the capabiliti…
The aim of this work is to bridge the gap between CC SNe and their remnants by investigating how post-explosion anisotropies in the ejecta influence the structure and chemical properties of the remnant at later times. We performed three-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamical simulations starting soon after the SN event and following the evolution of the system in the circumstellar medium (consisting of the wind of the stellar progenitor), for 5000 years, obtaining the physical scenario of a SNR. Here we focused the analysis on the case of a progenitor red supergiant of 19.8 M_sun. We also investig…
The Vela supernova remnant displays several ejecta, which are fragment-like features protruding beyond the front of its primary blast shock wave. They appear to be "shrapnel", bowshock-shaped relics of the supernova explosion. One of these pieces of shrapnel (A), located in the northeastern edge of the remnant, is peculiar because its X-ray spectrum exhibits a high Si abundance, in contrast to the other observed ejecta fragments, which show enhanced O, Ne, and Mg abundances. We present the analysis of another fragment located opposite to shrapnel A with respect to the center of the shell, in t…
The geometric structure of supernova remnants (SNR) provides a clue to unveiling the pre-explosion evolution of their progenitors. Here we present an X-ray study of N103B (0509-68.7), a Type Ia SNR in the Large Magellanic Cloud, that is known to be interacting with dense circumstellar matter (CSM). Applying our novel method for feature extraction to deep Chandra observations, we have successfully resolved the CSM, Fe-rich ejecta, and intermediate-mass element (IME) ejecta components, and revealed each of their spatial distribution. Remarkably, the IME ejecta component exhibits a double-ring st…
Supernova explosions are inherently asymmetric and can accelerate new-born neutron stars (NSs) to hundreds of km/s. Two prevailing theories to explain NS kicks are ejecta asymmetries (e.g., conservation of momentum between NS and ejecta) and anisotropic neutrino emission. Observations of supernova remnants (SNRs) can give us insights into the mechanism that generates these NS kicks. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between NS kick velocities and the X-ray morphologies of 18 SNRs observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Rontgen Satellite (ROSAT). We measure SNR asymmetr…
Supernova remnants (SNRs) are diffuse extended sources characterized by a complex morphology and a non-uniform distribution of ejecta. Such a morphology reflects pristine structures and features of the progenitor supernova (SN) and the early interaction of the SN blast wave with the inhomogeneous circumstellar medium (CSM). Deciphering the observations of SNRs might open the possibility to investigate the physical properties of both the interacting ejecta and the shocked CSM. This requires accurate numerical models which describe the evolution from the SN explosion to the remnant development a…
Here we present three-dimensional high resolution simulations of Type Ia supernova in the presence of a non-degenerate companion. We find that the presence of a nearby companion leaves a long-lived hole in the supernova ejecta. In particular, we aim to study the long term evolution of this hole as the supernova ejecta interacts with the surrounding interstellar medium. Using estimates for the x-ray emission, we find that the hole generated by the companion remains for many centuries after the interaction between the ejecta and the interstellar medium. We also show that the hole is discernible …
