Yang-Lee edge singularities are the branch point of the free energy on the complex plane of physical parameters and were shown to be the simplest universality class of phase transitions. However, the Yang-Lee edge singularities have not been regarded as experimentally observable since they occur at complex physical parameters, which are unphysical. A recent discovery about the relation between partition functions and probe spin coherence makes it experimentally feasible to access the complex plane of physical parameters. However, how to extract the critical point and the critical exponent of Yang-Lee edge singularities in many-body systems, which occurs only at thermodynamic limit, has still been elusive. Here we show that the quantum coherence of a probe spin coupled to finite-size Ising-type spin systems presents universal scaling behavior near the Yang-Lee edge singularity. The finite-size scaling behavior of quantum coherence of the probe spin predicts that one can extract the critical point and the critical exponent of the Yang-Lee edge singularity of Ising-type spin system in the thermodynamic limit from the spin coherence measurement of the probe spin coupled to finite Ising-type spin systems. This finding provides a practical approach to studying the nature of Yang-Lee edge singularities of many-body systems.
The Yang-Lee edge singularity is a quintessential nonunitary critical phenomenon accompanied by anomalous scaling laws. However, an imaginary magnetic field involved in this critical phenomenon makes its physical implementation difficult. By invoking the quantum-classical correspondence to embed the Yang-Lee edge singularity in a quantum system with an ancilla qubit, we demonstrate a physical realization of the nonunitary quantum criticality in an open quantum system. Here the nonunitary criticality is identified with the singularity at an exceptional point caused by postselection of quantum m…
This paper studies the Yang-Lee edge singularity of 2-dimensional (2D) Ising model based on a quantum spin chain and transfer matrix measurements on the cylinder. Based on finite-size scaling, the low-lying excitation spectrum is found at the Yang-Lee edge singularity. Based on transfer matrix techniques, the single structure constant is evaluated at the Yang-Lee edge singularity. The results of both types of measurements are found to be fully consistent with the predictions for the (A4;A1)minimal conformal field theory, which was previously identified with this critical point.
This paper studies the Yang-Lee edge singularity of 2-dimensional 2D Ising model through a quantum spin chain. In particular, finite-size scaling measurements on the quantum spin chain are used to determine the low-lying excitation spectrum and central charge at the Yang-Lee edge singularity. The measured values are consistent with predictions for the (A4, A1) minimal conformal field theory.
At the Yang-Lee edge singularity, finite-size scaling behavior is used to measure the low-lying excitation spectrum of the Ising quantum spin chain for free boundary conditions. The measured spectrum is used to identify the CFT that describes the Yang-Lee edge singularity of the 2D Ising model for free boundary conditions.
Lattice and continuum fluid models with repulsive-core interactions typically display a dominant, critical-type singularity on the real, negative activity axis. Lai and Fisher recently suggested, mainly on numerical grounds, that this repulsive-core singularity is universal and in the same class as the Yang-Lee edge singularities, which arise above criticality at complex activities with positive real part. A general analytic demonstration of this identification is presented here using a field-theory approach with separate representation of the repulsive and attractive parts of the pair interac…
The density of zeros of the partition function of the Ising model on a class of treelike lattices is studied. An exact closed-form expression for the pertinent critical exponents is derived by using a couple of recursion relations which have a singular behavior near the Yang-Lee edge.
We show that a class of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonians realizing the Yang-Lee edge singularity exhibits an entanglement transition in the long-time steady state evolved under the Hamiltonian. Such a transition is induced by a level crossing triggered by the critical point associated with the Yang-Lee singularity and hence is first-order in nature. At the transition, the entanglement entropy of the steady state jumps discontinuously from a volume-law to an area-law scaling. We exemplify this mechanism using a one-dimensional transverse field Ising model with additional imag…
This paper studies the Yang-Lee singularity of the 2-dimensional Ising model on the cylinder via transfer matrix and finite-size scaling techniques. These techniques enable a measurement of the 2-point and 3-point correlations and a comparison of a measurement of a corresponding universal amplitude with a prediction for the amplitude from the (A4,A1) minimal conformal field theory.
We show here for the one-dimensional spin-1/2 ANNNI (axial-next-to-nearest-neighbor-Ising) model in an external magnetic field that the linear density of Yang-Lee zeros may diverge with critical exponent $σ= -2/3$ at the Yang-Lee edge singularity. The necessary condition for this unusual behavior is the triple degeneracy of the transfer matrix eigenvalues. If this condition is absent we have the usual value $σ= -1/2$. Analogous results have been found in the literature in the spin-1 Blume-Emery-Griffths model and in the three-state Potts model in a magnetic field with two complex components. O…
We discuss the relevance of the Lee-Yang edge singularity to the finite-temperature Z_2-symmetry restoration transition of the Gross-Neveu model in three dimensions. We present an explicit result for its large-N free energy density in terms of Zeta(3) and the absolute maximum of Clausen's function.
We determine the universal location of the Yang-Lee edge singularity in the entire relevant domain of spatial dimensions $1\le d \le 4$ for the Ising universality class. To that end, we present analytical results for $d=1,2,4$ and near four dimensions. For $d=3$ and a set of fractional dimensions, we perform numerical calculations using a systematic Functional Renormalization Group approach.
We investigate the Yang-Lee edge singularity on non-planar random graphs, which we consider as the Feynman Diagrams of various d=0 field theories, in order to determine the value of the edge exponent. We consider the hard dimer model on phi3 and phi4 random graphs to test the universality of the exponent with respect to coordination number, and the Ising model in an external field to test its temperature independence. The results here for generic (``thin'') random graphs provide an interesting counterpoint to the discussion by Staudacher of these models on planar random graphs.
We determine a previously unknown universal quantity, the location of the Yang-Lee edge singularity for the O($N$) theories in a wide range of $N$ and various dimensions. At large $N$, we reproduce the $N\to\infty$ analytical result on the location of the singularity and, additionally, we obtain the mean-field result for the location in $d=4$ dimensions. In order to capture the nonperturbative physics for arbitrary $N$, $d$ and complex-valued external fields, we use the functional renormalization group approach.
We compute the critical exponents for nonextensive $λϕ^{3}$ scalar field theory for all loop orders and $|q - 1| < 1$. We apply the results for both nonextensive percolation and Lee-Yang edge singularity problems. The corresponding systems are nonextensive generalizations of their extensive counterparts. For that we employ tools from the recently introduced nonextensive statistical field theory. The results for the nonextensive critical exponents computed depend on the nonextensive parameter $q$, which encodes global correlations among the degrees of freedom of the system. The extensive result…

We determine the scaling properties of the Yang-Lee edge singularity as described by a one-component scalar field theory with imaginary cubic coupling, using the nonperturbative functional renormalization group in $3 \leq d\leq 6$ Euclidean dimensions. We find very good agreement with high-temperature series data in $d = 3$ dimensions and compare our results to recent estimates of critical exponents obtained with the four-loop $ε= 6-d$ expansion and the conformal bootstrap. The relevance of operator insertions at the corresponding fixed point of the RG $β$ functions is discussed and we estimat…
We study the driven dynamics across the critical points of the Yang-Lee edge singularities (YLESes) in a finite-size quantum Ising chain with an imaginary symmetry-breaking field. In contrast to the conventional classical or quantum phase transitions, these phase transitions are induced by tuning the strength of the dissipation in a non-Hermitian system and can occur even at finite size. For conventional phase transitions, universal behaviors in driven dynamics across critical points are usually described by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism, which states that the scaling in dynamics is dictated by t…
The densities of Yang-Lee zeros for the Ising ferromagnet on the $L\times L$ square lattice are evaluated from the exact grand partition functions ($L=3\sim16$). The properties of the density of Yang-Lee zeros are discussed as a function of temperature $T$ and system size $L$. The three different classes of phase transitions for the Ising ferromagnet, first-order phase transition, second-order phase transition, and Yang-Lee edge singularity, are clearly distinguished by estimating the magnetic scaling exponent $y_h$ from the densities of zeros for finite-size systems. The divergence of the den…
In this paper we study the non-unitary deformations of the two-dimensional Tricritical Ising Model obtained by coupling its two spin Z2 odd operators to imaginary magnetic fields. Varying the strengths of these imaginary magnetic fields and adjusting correspondingly the coupling constants of the two spin Z2 even fields, we establish the presence of two universality classes of infrared fixed points on the critical surface. The first class corresponds to the familiar Yang-Lee edge singularity, while the second class to its tricritical version. We argue that these two universality classes are con…
We apply the method of graphical functions that was recently extended to six dimensions for scalar theories, to $ϕ^3$ theory and compute the $β$ function, the wave function anomalous dimension as well as the mass anomalous dimension in the $\overline{\mbox{MS}}$ scheme to five loops. From the results we derive the corresponding renormalization group functions for the Lee-Yang edge singularity problem and percolation theory. After determining the $\varepsilon$ expansions of the respective critical exponents to $\mathcal{O}(\varepsilon^5)$ we apply recent resummation technology to obtain improve…
Universality classes of non-unitary critical theories in two-dimensions are characterized by a dimensional number, termed central charge or conformal anomaly. Conformal invariance predicts that the leading finite-size correction to the free energy of a two-dimensional system at a conformal invariant critical point is linearly related to the central charge of the corresponding conformal field theory. However, experimental determination of the central charge of a non-unitary conformal invariant critical theory has not been done before because of the intrinsic difficulty that complex parameters o…
We introduce a new way of reconstructing the equation of state of a thermodynamic system near a second order critical point from a finite set of Taylor coefficients computed away from the critical point. We focus on the Ising universality class (${\mathbb Z}_2$ symmetry) and show that in the crossover region of the phase diagram it is possible to efficiently extract the location of the nearest thermodynamic singularity, the Lee-Yang edge singularity, from which one can (i) determine the location of the critical point, (ii) constrain the non-universal parameters that maps the equation of state …
The Yang-Lee zeros of the Q-state Potts model on recursive lattices are studied for non-integer values of Q. Considering 1D lattice as a Bethe lattice with coordination number equal to two, the location of Yang-Lee zeros of 1D ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Potts models is completely analyzed in terms of neutral periodical points. Three different regimes for Yang-Lee zeros are found for Q>1 and 0<Q<1. An exact analytical formula for the equation of phase transition points is derived for the 1D case. It is shown that Yang-Lee zeros of the Q-state Potts model on a Bethe lattice are located …
It is known that the (exact) renormalization transformations for the one-dimensional Ising model in field can be cast in the form of a logistic map f(x) = 4 x (1 - x) with x a function of the Ising couplings. Remarkably, the line bounding the region of chaotic behaviour in x is precisely that defining the Yang-Lee edge singularity in the Ising model. In this paper we show that the one dimensional q-state Potts model for q greater than or equal to 1 also displays such behaviour. A suitable combination of Potts couplings can again be used to define an x satisfying f(x) = 4 x (1 -x). The Yang-Lee…
The phase diagram of the two- and three-state Potts model with infinite-range interactions, in the external field is analyzed by studying the partition function zeros in the complex field plane. The tricritical point of the three-state model is observed as the approach of the zeros to the real axis at the nonzero field value. Different regimes, involving several first- and second-order transitions of the complicated phase diagram of the three state model are identified from the scaling properties of the zeros closest to the real axis. The critical exponents related to the tricritical point and…
The Perron-Frobenius theorem is applied to identify the superfluid transition of a two-component Fermi gas with a zero-range s-wave interaction. According to the quantum cluster expansion method of Lee and Yang, the grand partition function is expressed by the Lee-Yang contracted 0-graphs. A singularity of an infinite series of ladder-type Lee-Yang contracted 0-graphs is analyzed. We point out that the singularity is governed by the Perron-Frobenius eigenvalue of a certain primitive matrix which is defined in terms of the two-body cluster functions and the Fermi distribution functions. As a co…

We use the method of `coupling to 2d QG' to study the analytic properties of the universal specific free energy of the O(n) loop model in complex magnetic field. We compute the specific free energy on a dynamical lattice using the correspondence with a matrix model. The free energy has a pair of Yang-Lee edges on the high-temperature sheet and a Langer type branch cut on the low-temperature sheet. Our result confirms a conjecture by A. and Al. Zamolodchikov about the decay rate of the metastable vacuum in presence of Liouville gravity and gives strong evidence about the existence of a weakly m…
We address a number of outstanding questions associated with the analytic properties of the universal equation of state of the $ϕ^4$ theory, which describes the critical behavior of the Ising model and ubiquitous critical points of the liquid-gas type. We focus on the relation between spinodal points that limit the domain of metastability for temperatures below the critical temperature, i.e., $T < T_{\rm c}$, and Lee-Yang edge singularities that restrict the domain of analyticity around the point of zero magnetic field $H$ for $T > T_{\rm c}$. The extended analyticity conjecture (due to Fonsec…
The Yang-Lee, Fisher and Potts zeros of the one-dimensional Q-state Potts model are studied using the theory of dynamical systems. An exact recurrence relation for the partition function is derived. It is shown that zeros of the partition function may be associated with neutral fixed points of the recurrence relation. Further, a general equation for zeros of the partition function is found and a classification of the Yang-Lee, Fisher and Potts zeros is given. It is shown that the Fisher zeros in a nonzero magnetic field are located on several lines in the complex temperature plane and that the…
We investigate the distribution of zeros of the partition function of the two- and three-dimensional symmetric $\pm J$ Ising spin glasses on the complex field plane. We use the method to analytically implement the idea of numerical transfer matrix which provides us with the exact expression of the partition function as a polynomial of fugacity. The results show that zeros are distributed in a wide region in the complex field plane. Nevertheless we observe that zeros on the imaginary axis play dominant roles in the critical behaviour since zeros on the imaginary axis are in closer proximity to …
We provide a generalisation of the matrix product operator (MPO) formalism for string-net projected entangled pair states (PEPS) to include non-unitary solutions of the pentagon equation. These states provide the explicit lattice realisation of the Galois conjugated counterparts of (2+1) dimensional TQFTs, based on tensor fusion categories. Although the parent Hamiltonians of these renormalisation group fixed point states are non-Hermitian, many of the topological properties of the states still hold, as a result of the pentagon equation. We show by example that the the topological sectors of t…
The $Q$-state Potts model on the simple-cubic lattice is studied using the zeros of the exact partition function on a finite lattice. The critical behavior of the model in the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases is discussed based on the distribution of the zeros in the complex temperature plane. The characteristic exponents at complex-temperature singularities, which coexist with the physical critical points in the complex temperature plane for no magnetic field ($H_q=0$), are estimated using the low-temperature series expansion. We also study the partition function zeros of the Potts …
We study different estimators of the radius of convergence of the Taylor series of the pressure in finite density QCD. We adopt the approach in which the radius of convergence is estimated first in a finite volume, and the infinite-volume limit is taken later. This requires an estimator for the radius of convergence that is reliable in a finite volume. Based on general arguments about the analytic structure of the partition function in a finite volume, we demonstrate that the ratio estimator cannot work in this approach, and propose three new estimators, capable of extracting reliably the radi…
