Cross-domain biometrics has been emerging as a new necessity, which poses several additional challenges, including harsh illumination changes, noise, pose variation, among others. In this paper, we explore approaches to cross-domain face verification, comparing self-portrait photographs ("selfies") to ID documents. We approach the problem with proper image photometric adjustment and data standardization techniques, along with deep learning methods to extract the most prominent features from the data, reducing the effects of domain shift in this problem. We validate the methods using a novel dataset comprising 50 individuals. The obtained results are promising and indicate that the adopted path is worth further investigation.

We present a method for turning a flash selfie taken with a smartphone into a photograph as if it was taken in a studio setting with uniform lighting. Our method uses a convolutional neural network trained on a set of pairs of photographs acquired in an ad-hoc acquisition campaign. Each pair consists of one photograph of a subject's face taken with the camera flash enabled and another one of the same subject in the same pose illuminated using a photographic studio-lighting setup. We show how our method can amend defects introduced by a close-up camera flash, such as specular highlights, shadow…
A portrait is a painting, drawing, photograph, or engraving of a person, especially one depicting only the face or head and shoulders. In the digital world the portrait of a person is captured by having the person as a subject in the image and capturing the image of the person such that the background is blurred. DSLRs generally do it by reducing the aperture to focus on very close regions of interest and automatically blur the background. In this paper I have come up with a novel approach to replicate the portrait mode from DSLR using any smartphone to generate high quality portrait images.
Digital portrait photographs are everywhere, and while the number of face pictures keeps growing, not much work has been done to on automatic portrait beauty assessment. In this paper, we design a specific framework to automatically evaluate the beauty of digital portraits. To this end, we procure a large dataset of face images annotated not only with aesthetic scores but also with information about the traits of the subject portrayed. We design a set of visual features based on portrait photography literature, and extensively analyze their relation with portrait beauty, exposing interesting f…

Due to the ubiquity of smartphones, it is popular to take photos of one's self, or "selfies." Such photos are convenient to take, because they do not require specialized equipment or a third-party photographer. However, in selfies, constraints such as human arm length often make the body pose look unnatural. To address this issue, we introduce $\textit{unselfie}$, a novel photographic transformation that automatically translates a selfie into a neutral-pose portrait. To achieve this, we first collect an unpaired dataset, and introduce a way to synthesize paired training data for self-supervise…
Full-body portrait stylization, which aims to translate portrait photography into a cartoon style, has drawn attention recently. However, most methods have focused only on converting face regions, restraining the feasibility of use in real-world applications. A recently proposed two-stage method expands the rendering area to full bodies, but the outputs are less plausible and fail to achieve quality robustness of non-face regions. Furthermore, they cannot reflect diverse skin tones. In this study, we propose a data-centric solution to build a production-level full-body portrait stylization sys…

Casually-taken portrait photographs often suffer from unflattering lighting and shadowing because of suboptimal conditions in the environment. Aesthetic qualities such as the position and softness of shadows and the lighting ratio between the bright and dark parts of the face are frequently determined by the constraints of the environment rather than by the photographer. Professionals address this issue by adding light shaping tools such as scrims, bounce cards, and flashes. In this paper, we present a computational approach that gives casual photographers some of this control, thereby allowin…

In contrast to the traditional avatar creation pipeline which is a costly process, contemporary generative approaches directly learn the data distribution from photographs. While plenty of works extend unconditional generative models and achieve some levels of controllability, it is still challenging to ensure multi-view consistency, especially in large poses. In this work, we propose a network that generates 3D-aware portraits while being controllable according to semantic parameters regarding pose, identity, expression and illumination. Our network uses neural scene representation to model 3…

In this work, we propose NARRATE, a novel pipeline that enables simultaneously editing portrait lighting and perspective in a photorealistic manner. As a hybrid neural-physical face model, NARRATE leverages complementary benefits of geometry-aware generative approaches and normal-assisted physical face models. In a nutshell, NARRATE first inverts the input portrait to a coarse geometry and employs neural rendering to generate images resembling the input, as well as producing convincing pose changes. However, inversion step introduces mismatch, bringing low-quality images with less facial detai…
Millions of images of human faces are captured every single day; but these photographs portray the likeness of an individual with a fixed pose, expression, and appearance. Portrait image animation enables the post-capture adjustment of these attributes from a single image while maintaining a photorealistic reconstruction of the subject's likeness or identity. Still, current methods for portrait image animation are typically based on 2D warping operations or manipulations of a 2D generative adversarial network (GAN) and lack explicit mechanisms to enforce multi-view consistency. Thus these meth…
A sketch, found in one of Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks and covered by the written notes of this genius, has been recently restored. The restoration reveals a possible self-portrait of the artist, drawn when he was young. Here, we discuss the discovery of this self-portrait and the procedure used for restoration. Actually, this is a restoration performed on the digital image of the sketch, a procedure that can easily extended and applied to ancient documents for studies of art and palaeography.

In this paper, we aim to address the large domain gap between high-resolution face images, e.g., from professional portrait photography, and low-quality surveillance images, e.g., from security cameras. Establishing an identity match between disparate sources like this is a classical surveillance face identification scenario, which continues to be a challenging problem for modern face recognition techniques. To that end, we propose a method that combines face super-resolution, resolution matching, and multi-scale template accumulation to reliably recognize faces from long-range surveillance fo…

Identity documents automatic reading and verification is an appealing technology for nowadays service industry, since this task is still mostly performed manually, leading to waste of economic and time resources. In this paper the prototype of a novel automatic reading system of identity documents is presented. The system has been thought to extract data of the main Italian identity documents from photographs of acceptable quality, like those usually required to online subscribers of various services. The document is first localized inside the photo, and then classified; finally, text recognit…
With the widespread use of mobile phones and scanners to photograph and upload documents, the need for extracting the information trapped in unstructured document images such as retail receipts, insurance claim forms and financial invoices is becoming more acute. A major hurdle to this objective is that these images often contain information in the form of tables and extracting data from tabular sub-images presents a unique set of challenges. This includes accurate detection of the tabular region within an image, and subsequently detecting and extracting information from the rows and columns o…

Kuzushiji, a cursive writing style, had been used in Japan for over a thousand years starting from the 8th century. Over 3 millions books on a diverse array of topics, such as literature, science, mathematics and even cooking are preserved. However, following a change to the Japanese writing system in 1900, Kuzushiji has not been included in regular school curricula. Therefore, most Japanese natives nowadays cannot read books written or printed just 150 years ago. Museums and libraries have invested a great deal of effort into creating digital copies of these historical documents as a safeguar…

Ensuring the security of transactions is currently one of the major challenges that banking systems deal with. The usage of face for biometric authentication of users is attracting large investments from banks worldwide due to its convenience and acceptability by people, especially in cross-domain scenarios, in which facial images from ID documents are compared with digital self-portraits (selfies) for the automated opening of new checking accounts, e.g, or financial transactions authorization. Actually, the comparison of selfies and IDs has also been applied in another wide variety of tasks n…
