The Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) provides a novel formalism that is able to accurately predict the clustering of large-scale structure (LSS) in the mildly non-linear regime. Here we provide the first computation of the power spectrum of biased tracers in redshift space at one loop order, and we make the associated code publicly available. We compare the multipoles $\ell=0,2$ of the redshift-space halo power spectrum, together with the real-space matter and halo power spectra, with data from numerical simulations at $z=0.67$. For the samples we compare to, which have a number density of $\bar n=3.8 \cdot 10^{-2}(h \ {\rm Mpc}^{-1})^3$ and $\bar n=3.9 \cdot 10^{-4}(h \ {\rm Mpc}^{-1})^3$, we find that the calculation at one-loop order matches numerical measurements to within a few percent up to $k\simeq 0.43 \ h \ {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, a significant improvement with respect to former techniques. By performing the so-called IR-resummation, we find that the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation peak is accurately reproduced. Based on the results presented here, long-wavelength statistics that are routinely observed in LSS surveys can be finally computed in the EFTofLSS. This formalism thus is ready to start to be compared directly to observational data.
The effective-field-theory (EFT) approach to the clustering of galaxies and other biased tracers allows for an isolation of the cosmological information that is protected by symmetries, in particular the equivalence principle, and thus is robust to the complicated dynamics of dark matter, gas, and stars on small scales. All existing implementations proceed by making predictions for the lowest-order $n$-point functions of biased tracers, as well as their covariance, and comparing with measurements. Recently, we presented an EFT-based expression for the conditional probability of the density fie…

We derive, using functional methods and the bias expansion, the conditional likelihood for observing a specific tracer field given an underlying matter field. This likelihood is necessary for Bayesian-inference methods. If we neglect all stochastic terms apart from the ones appearing in the auto two-point function of tracers, we recover the result of Schmidt et al., 2018. We then rigorously derive the corrections to this result, such as those coming from a non-Gaussian stochasticity (which include the stochastic corrections to the tracer bispectrum) and higher-derivative terms. We discuss how …
With the completion of the Planck mission, in order to continue to gather cosmological information it has become crucial to understand the Large Scale Structures (LSS) of the universe to percent accuracy. The Effective Field Theory of LSS (EFTofLSS) is a novel theoretical framework that aims to develop an analytic understanding of LSS at long distances, where inhomogeneities are small. We further develop the description of biased tracers in the EFTofLSS to account for the effect of baryonic physics and primordial non-Gaussianities, finding that new bias coefficients are required. Then, restric…
We present updates on the cosmology inference using the effective field theory (EFT) likelihood presented previously in Schmidt et al., 2018, Elsner et al., 2019 [1,2]. Specifically, we add a cutoff to the initial conditions that serve as starting point for the matter forward model. We show that this cutoff, which was not employed in any previous related work, is important to regularize loop integrals that otherwise involve small-scale, non-perturbative modes. We then present results on the inferred value of the linear power spectrum normalization $σ_{8}$ from rest-frame halo catalogs using bo…
We incorporate the effects of redshift space distortions and non-linear bias in time-sliced perturbation theory (TSPT). This is done via a new method that allows to map cosmological correlation functions from real to redshift space. This mapping preserves a transparent infrared (IR) structure of the theory and provides us with an efficient tool to study non-linear infrared effects altering the pattern of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) in redshift space. We give an accurate description of the BAO by means of a systematic resummation of Feynman diagrams guided by well-defined power counting …

We present the one-loop perturbation theory for the power spectrum of the marked density field of matter and biased tracers in real- and redshift-space. The statistic has been shown to yield impressive constraints on cosmological parameters; to exploit this, we require an accurate and computationally inexpensive theoretical model. Comparison with $N$-body simulations demonstrates that linear theory fails on all scales, but inclusion of one-loop Effective Field Theory terms gives a substantial improvement, with $\sim 5\%$ accuracy at $z = 1$. The expansion is less convergent in redshift-space (…
We compare analytic predictions for real and Fourier space two-point statistics for biased tracers from a variety of Lagrangian Perturbation Theory approaches against those from state of the art N-body simulations in $f(R)$ Hu-Sawicki and the nDGP braneworld modified gravity theories. We show that the novel physics of gravitational collapse in scalar tensor theories with the chameleon or the Vainshtein screening mechanism can be effectively factored in with bias parameters analytically predicted using the Peak-Background Split formalism when updated to include the environmental sensitivity of …
The physical scale corresponding to baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), the size of the sound horizon at recombination, is precisely determined by CMB experiments. Measuring the apparent size of the BAO scale imprinted in the clustering of galaxies gives us a direct estimate of the angular-diameter distance and the Hubble parameter as a function of redshift. The BAO feature is damped by non-linear structure formation, which reduces the precision with which we can infer the BAO scale from standard galaxy clustering analysis methods. Many methods to undo this damping via the so-called BAO recons…
General and explicit predictions from the integrated perturbation theory (iPT) for power spectra and correlation functions of biased tracers are derived and presented in the one-loop approximation. The iPT is a general framework of the nonlinear perturbation theory of cosmological density fields in presence of nonlocal bias, redshift-space distortions, and primordial non-Gaussianity. Analytic formulas of auto and cross power spectra of nonlocally biased tracers in both real and redshift spaces are derived and the results are comprehensively summarized. The main difference from previous formula…
We develop a simple formalism of biased tracers that we dub $\mathit{Monkey\ bias}$. In this formalism, a biased tracer field is constructed directly in terms of the linear matter fluctuation field and the set of derivative operators acting on it. Such bias expansion is first organized based on the general structure of non-linear dynamical equations for the biased tracers. Further physical conditions, like the equivalence principle, are imposed on tree-level correlators utilising the consistency relations. We obtain the bias expansion up to the third-order in linear matter fluctuation in the g…
In this work we extend the perturbation theory for modified gravity (MG) in two main aspects. First, the construction of matter overdensities from Lagrangian displacement fields is shown to hold in a general framework, allowing us to find Standard Perturbation Theory (SPT) kernels from known Lagrangian Perturbation Theory (LPT) kernels. We then develop a theory of biased tracers for generalized cosmologies, extending already existing formalisms for $Λ$CDM. We present the correlation function in Convolution-LPT and the power spectrum in SPT for $Λ$CDM, $f(R)$ Hu-Sawicky, and DGP braneworld mode…
Most of the upcoming cosmological information will come from analyzing the clustering of the Large Scale Structures (LSS) of the universe through LSS or CMB observations. It is therefore essential to be able to understand their behavior with exquisite precision. The Effective Field Theory of Large Scale Structures (EFTofLSS) provides a consistent framework to make predictions for LSS observables in the mildly non-linear regime. In this paper we focus on biased tracers. We argue that in calculations at a given order in the dark matter perturbations, highly biased tracers will underperform becau…
The effective field theory likelihood for the density field of biased tracers allows for cosmology inference from the clustering of galaxies that consistently uses all available information at a given order in perturbation theory. This paper presents results and implementation details on the real-space (as opposed to Fourier-space) formulation of the likelihood, which allows for the incorporation of survey window functions. The implementation further uses a Lagrangian forward model for biased tracers which automatically accounts for all relevant contributions up to any desired order. Unbiased …
Plenty of crucial information about our Universe is encoded in the cosmic large-scale structure (LSS). However, the extractions of these information are usually hindered by the nonlinearities of the LSS, which can be largely alleviated by various techniques known as the reconstruction. In realistic applications, the efficiencies of these methods are always degraded by many limiting factors, a quite important one being the shot noise induced by the finite number density of biased matter tracers (i.e., luminous galaxies or dark matter halos) in observations. In this work, we explore the gains of…
Gravitationally collapsed objects are known to be biased tracers of an underlying density contrast. Using symmetry arguments, generalised biasing schemes have recently been developed to relate the halo density contrast $δ_h$ with the underlying density contrast $δ$, divergence of velocity $θ$ and their higher-order derivatives. This is done by constructing invariants such as $s, t, ψ,η$. We show how the generating function formalism in Eulerian standard perturbation theory (SPT) can be used to show that many of the additional terms based on extended Galilean and Lifshitz symmetry actually do n…
We study the effect of time evolution on galaxy bias. We argue that at any order in perturbations, the galaxy density contrast can be expressed in terms of a finite set of locally measurable operators made of spatial and temporal derivatives of the Newtonian potential. This is checked in an explicit third order calculation. There is a systematic way to derive a basis for these operators. This basis spans a larger space than the expansion in gravitational and velocity potentials usually employed, although new operators only appear at fourth order. The basis is argued to be closed under renormal…
We study the effect of the Einstein - de Sitter (EdS) approximation on the one-loop power spectrum of galaxies in redshift space in the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure. The dark matter density perturbations and velocity divergence are treated with exact time dependence. Splitting the density perturbation into its different temporal evolutions naturally gives rise to an irreducible basis of biases. While, as in the EdS approximation, at each time this basis spans a seven-dimensional space, this space is a slightly different one, and the difference is captured by a single calcula…
Primordial black holes (PBHs) are theoretical black holes which may be formed during the radiation dominant era and, basically, caused by the gravitational collapse of radiational overdensities. It has been well known that in the context of the structure formation in our Universe such collapsed objects, e.g., halos/galaxies, could be considered as bias tracers of underlying matter fluctuations and the halo/galaxy bias has been studied well. Employing a peak-background split picture which is known to be a useful tool to discuss the halo bias, we consider the large scale clustering behavior of t…
The reconstruction of the initial conditions of the Universe is an important topic in cosmology, particularly in the context of sharpening the measurement of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) peak. Nonlinear reconstruction algorithms developed in recent years, when applied to late-time matter fields, can recover to a substantial degree the initial density distribution, however, when applied to sparse tracers of the matter field, the performance is poorer. In this paper we apply the Shi et al. non-linear reconstruction method to biased tracers in order to establish what factors affect the r…
We explore Lagrangian perturbation theory (LPT) for biased tracers in the presence of two fluids, focusing on the case of cold dark matter (CDM) and baryons. The presence of two fluids induces corrections to the Lagrangian bias expansion and tracer advection, both of which we formulate as expansions in the three linear modes of the Lagrangian equations of motion. We compute the linear-order two-fluid corrections in the Zeldovich approximation, finding that modifications to the bias expansion and tracer advection both enter as percent-level corrections over a large range of wavenumbers at low r…
The velocity profile of galaxies around voids is a key ingredient for redshift space distortion (RSD) measurements made using the void-galaxy correlation function. In this paper we use simulations to test whether the velocity profile of the tracers used to find the voids matches the velocity profile of the dark matter around these voids. A mismatch is expected and found in the inner part of voids, where tracers are very sparse. We discuss how this difference is caused by a selection effect where the void centre positions are correlated to the particular realization of the sparse tracers and th…
We extend the scale-dependent Gaussian Streaming Model (GSM) to produce analytical predictions for the anisotropic redshift-space correlation function for biased tracers in modified gravity models. Employing the Convolution Lagrangian Perturbation Theory (CLPT) re-summation scheme, with a local Lagrangian bias schema provided by the peak-background split formalism, we predict the necessary ingredients that enter the GSM, the real-space halo pairwise velocity and the pairwise velocity dispersion. We further consider effective field theory contributions to the pairwise velocity dispersion in ord…

The Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure (EFTofLSS) provides a consistent perturbative framework for describing the statistical distribution of cosmological large-scale structure. In a previous EFTofLSS calculation that involved the one-loop power spectra and tree-level bispectra, it was shown that the $k$-reach of the prediction for biased tracers is comparable for all investigated masses if suitable higher-derivative biases, which are less suppressed for more massive tracers, are added. However, it is possible that the non-linear biases grow faster with tracer mass than the linear…
Recent development in the reconstruction of the large-scale structure (LSS) has seen significant improvement in restoring the linear baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) from at least the non-linear matter field. This outstanding performance is achieved by iteratively solving the Monge-Ampere equation of the mass conservation. However, this technique also relies on several assumptions that are not valid in reality, namely the longitudinal displacement, the absence of shell-crossing and homogeneous initial condition. In particular, the conservation equation of the tracers comprises the biasing i…

Cosmological simulations play an increasingly important role in analysing the observed large-scale structure of the Universe. Recently, they have been particularly important in building hybrid models that combine a perturbative bias expansion with displacement fields extracted from N-body simulations to describe the clustering of biased tracers. Here, we show that simulations that employ a technique referred to as "Fixing-and-pairing" (F&P) can dramatically improve the statistical precision of such hybrid models. Specifically, by numerical and analytic means, we show that F&P simulations provi…
We investigate the impact of each ingredient in the employed physical data model on the Bayesian forward inference of initial conditions from biased tracers at the field level. Specifically, we use dark matter halos in a given cosmological simulation volume as tracers of the underlying matter density field. We study the effect of tracer density, grid resolution, gravity model, bias model and likelihood on the inferred initial conditions. We find that the cross-correlation coefficient between true and inferred phases reacts weakly to all ingredients above, and is well predicted by the theoretic…
Large-scale Fourier modes of the cosmic density field are of great value for learning about cosmology because of their well-understood relationship to fluctuations in the early universe. However, cosmic variance generally limits the statistical precision that can be achieved when constraining model parameters using these modes as measured in galaxy surveys, and moreover, these modes are sometimes inaccessible due to observational systematics or foregrounds. For some applications, both limitations can be circumvented by reconstructing large-scale modes using the correlations they induce between…
Extracting the non-Gaussian information encoded in the higher-order clustering statistics of the large-scale structure is key to fully realizing the potential of upcoming galaxy surveys. We investigate the information content of the redshift-space {\it weighted skew spectra} of biased tracers as efficient estimators for 3-point clustering statistics. The skew spectra are constructed by correlating the observed galaxy field with an appropriately-weighted square of it. We perform numerical Fisher forecasts using two synthetic datasets; the halo catalogs from the Quijote N-body simulations and th…
Cosmic voids are large underdense regions that, together with galaxy clusters, filaments and walls, build up the large-scale structure of the Universe. The void size function provides a powerful probe to test the cosmological framework. However, to fully exploit this statistics, the void sample has to be properly cleaned from spurious objects. Furthermore, the bias of the mass tracers used to detect these regions has to be taken into account in the size function model. In our work we test a cleaning algorithm and a new void size function model on a set of simulated dark matter halo catalogues,…
We investigate the application of Hybrid Effective Field Theory (HEFT) -- which combines a Lagrangian bias expansion with subsequent particle dynamics from $N$-body simulations -- to the modeling of $k$-Nearest Neighbor Cumulative Distribution Functions ($k{\rm NN}$-${\rm CDF}$s) of biased tracers of the cosmological matter field. The $k{\rm NN}$-${\rm CDF}$s are sensitive to all higher order connected $N$-point functions in the data, but are computationally cheap to compute. We develop the formalism to predict the $k{\rm NN}$-${\rm CDF}$s of discrete tracers of a continuous field from the sta…
It has been recognized that the observables of large-scale structure (LSS) is susceptible to long-wavelength density and tidal fluctuations whose wavelengths exceed the accessible scale of a finite-volume observation, referred to as the super-sample modes. The super-sample modes modulate the growth and expansion rate of local structures, thus affecting the cosmological information encoded in the statistics of galaxy clustering data. In this paper, based on the Lagrangian perturbation theory, we develop a new formalism to systematically compute the response of a biased tracer of LSS, which is e…
We study the performance of the perturbative bias expansion when combined with the multi-tracer technique, and their impact on the extraction of cosmological parameters. We consider two populations of tracers of large-scale structure and perform a series of Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis for those two tracers separately. The constraints in $ω_{\rm cdm}$ and $h$ using multi-tracer are less biased and approximately $60\%$ better than those obtained for a single tracer. The multi-tracer approach also provides stronger constraints on the bias expansion parameters, breaking degeneracies between …
In this paper we test the perturbative halo bias model at the field level. The advantage of this approach is that any analysis can be done without sample variance if the same initial conditions are used in simulations and perturbation theory calculations. We write the bias expansion in terms of modified bias operators in Eulerian space, designed such that the large bulk flows are automatically resummed and not treated perturbatively. Using these operators, the bias model accurately matches the Eulerian density of halos in N-body simulations. The mean-square model error is close to the Poisson …
We present a new formulation of Lagrangian perturbation theory which allows accurate predictions of the real- and redshift-space correlation functions of the mass field and dark matter halos. Our formulation involves a non-perturbative resummation of Lagrangian perturbation theory and indeed can be viewed as a partial resummation of the formalism of Matsubara (2008a,b) in which we keep exponentiated all of the terms which tend to a constant at large separation. One of the key features of our method is that we naturally recover the Zel'dovich approximation as the lowest order of our expansion f…
Shot noise is an important ingredient to any measurement or theoretical modeling of discrete tracers of the large scale structure. Recent work has shown that the shot noise in the halo power spectrum becomes increasingly sub-Poissonian at high mass. Interestingly, while the halo model predicts a shot noise power spectrum in qualitative agreement with the data, it leads to an unphysical white noise in the cross halo-matter and matter power spectrum. In this work, we show that absorbing all the halo model sources of shot noise into the halo fluctuation field leads to meaningful predictions for t…
We study how the properties of cosmic voids depend on those of the tracer galaxy populations in which they are identified. We use a suite of halo occupation distribution (HOD) mocks in a simulation, identify voids in these populations using the ZOBOV void finder and measure their abundances, sizes, tracer densities, and dark matter content. To separate the effects of bias from those of sampling density, we do the same for voids traced by randomly down-sampled subsets of the simulation dark matter particles. At the same sampling density, galaxy bias reduces the total number of voids by ~50% and…
Cosmic voids are the major volume component in the matter distribution of the Universe. They posses great potential for constraining dark energy as well as for testing theories of gravity. Nevertheless, in spite of their growing popularity as cosmological probes, a gap of knowledge between cosmic void observations and theory still persists. In particular, the void size function models proposed in literature have been proven unsuccessful in reproducing the results obtained from cosmological simulations in which cosmic voids are detected from biased tracers of the density field, undermining the …
We study the EFT likelihood for biased tracers in redshift space, for which the bias expansion of the galaxy velocity field $\mathbf{v}_g$ plays a fundamental role. The equivalence principle forbids stochastic contributions to $\mathbf{v}_g$ to survive at small $k$. Therefore, at leading order in derivatives the form of the likelihood ${\cal P}[\tildeδ_g|δ,\!\mathbf{v}]$ to observe a redshift-space galaxy overdensity $\tildeδ_g(\tilde{\mathbf{x}})$ given a rest-frame matter and velocity fields $δ(\mathbf{x})$, $\mathbf{v}(\mathbf{x})$ is fixed by the rest-frame noise. If this noise is Gaussian…
The forecasted accuracy of upcoming surveys of large-scale structure cannot be achieved without a proper quantification of the error induced by foreground removal (or other systematics like 0-point photometry offset). Because these errors are highly correlated on the sky, their influence is expected to be especially important at very large scales. In this work we quantify how the uncertainty in the visibility mask of a survey influences the measured power spectrum of a sample of tracers of the density field and its covariance matrix. We start from a very large set of 10,000 catalogs of dark ma…
The multi-tracer technique employs a ratio of densities of two differently biased galaxy samples that trace the same underlying matter density field, and was proposed to alleviate the cosmic variance problem. Here we propose a novel application of this approach, applying it to two different tracers one of which is the 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen from the epochs of reionization and comic dawn. The second tracer is assumed to be a sample of high-redshift galaxies, but the approach can be generalized and applied to other high-redshift tracers. We show that the anisotropy of the ratio of the …
We present a Bayesian reconstruction algorithm to generate unbiased samples of the underlying dark matter field from halo catalogues. Our new contribution consists of implementing a non-Poisson likelihood including a deterministic non-linear and scale-dependent bias. In particular we present the Hamiltonian equations of motions for the negative binomial (NB) probability distribution function. This permits us to efficiently sample the posterior distribution function of density fields given a sample of galaxies using the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo technique implemented in the Argo code. We have tes…
The dark matter halos that host galaxies and clusters form out of initial high-density patches, providing a biased tracer of the linear matter density field. In the simplest local bias approximation, the halo field is treated as a perturbative series in the average overdensity of the Lagrangian patch. In more realistic models, however, additional quantities will affect the clustering of halo-patches, and this expansion becomes a function of several stochastic variables. In this paper, we present a general multivariate expansion scheme that can parametrize the clustering of any biased Lagrangia…
We provide in depth MCMC comparisons of two different models for the halo redshift space power spectrum, namely a variant of the commonly applied Taruya-Nishimichi-Saito (TNS) model and an effective field theory of large scale structure (EFTofLSS) inspired model. Using many simulation realisations and Stage IV survey-like specifications for the covariance matrix, we check each model's range of validity by testing for bias in the recovery of the fiducial growth rate of structure formation. The robustness of the determined range of validity is then tested by performing additional MCMC analyses u…
We investigate the mass distribution of long gamma-ray burst (GRB) host galaxies and the redshift distribution of long GRBs by considering that long GRBs occur in low-metallicity environments. We calculate the upper limit on the stellar mass of a galaxy which can produce long GRBs by utilizing the mass-metallicity (M-Z) relation of galaxies. After comparing with the observed GRB host galaxies masses, we find that the observed GRB host galaxy masses can fit the predicted masses well if GRBs occur in low-metallicity $12+\log\rm(O/H)_{\rm KK04}<8.7$. GRB host galaxies have low metallicity, low ma…
