Mass measurement of a particle whose decay products including invisible particles is a challenging task at colliders. For a new physics model involving a dark matter candidate $N$ and a $Z_2$ symmetry that stabilizes it, a typical new process at $e^+e^-$ colliders is the pair production $e^+e^- \to Y\bar{Y}$ followed by decay processes $Y\to aN$ and $\bar{Y}\to b\bar{N}$, where $a$ and $b$ are visible but $N$ is invisible. In this work, we propose a new method to measure the physical masses in this topology by making use of the kinematic equations given by momentum-energy conservation and on-shell conditions. For each event, the solvability of these equations determines a limited region on the trial $m_Y$-$m_N$ plane. The edge of this region can be used to define two variables, $m_Y^\mathrm{edge}$ and $m_N^\mathrm{edge}$, whose distributions are utilized to derive the measurement values of $m_Y$ and $m_N$. The measurement deviations and uncertainties are also estimated after including detector effects and background contamination.
We correct our treatment of decays of the lightest chargino to final states containing the lightest neutralino in the case where the chargino and neutralino masses differ by less than 1 GeV. A brief summary of the phenomenological implications is given.
We investigate the invisible decay of positronium to probe the fermionic light dark matter mediated by the dark $Z$ boson. Too tiny is the invisible decay rate of positronium through weak interaction in the standard model to be detected in the experiment. We show that it can be enhanced to be observed in the future if the dark matter is lighter than the electron in the dark $Z$ model. We also compute the relic abundance of such light dark matter and discuss the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis constraint with an alternative thermal history scenario.
We consider the application of endpoint techniques to the problem of mass determination for new particles produced at a hadron collider, where these particles decay to an invisible particle of unknown mass and one or more visible particles of known mass. We also consider decays of these types for pair-produced particles and in each case consider situations both with and without initial state radiation. We prove that, in most (but not all) cases, the endpoint of an appropriate transverse mass observable, considered as a function of the unknown mass of the invisible particle, has a kink at the t…
We investigate the potential of TESLA and JLC/NLC electron-positron linear collider designs to observe diquarks produced resonantly in processes involving hard photons.
The measurement of the invisible Z-boson decay width at e+e- colliders can be done "indirectly", by subtracting the Z-boson visible partial widths from the Z-boson total width, or "directly", from the process e+e- -> γν\barν. Both procedures are sensitive to different types of new physics and provide information about the couplings of the neutrinos to the Z-boson. At present, measurements at LEP and CHARM II are capable of constraining the left-handed Zνν-coupling, 0.45 <~ g_L <~ 0.5, while the right-handed one is only mildly bounded, |g_R| <= 0.2. We show that measurements at a future e+e- li…
Around forty years passed from the beginning of operation of the first electron-positron colliding beam facility VEPP-2 in Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP), Novosibirsk. Here I described development of electron-positron colliding beam project in INP, as well as advance of similar projects of the first generation at LAL, Orsay and at LNF, Frascati.
The process e+e- --> mu+ mu- + missing E_T, where the missing energy is due to the production of a tower of invisible graviton states in a model with large extra dimensions, is considered. We focus on the scenario when this process is used to detect a heavy dileptonic resonance in the electroweak sector of the model, taking as example some models with an extra Z' boson. It turns out that at a 500 GeV machine with 1000 inverse fb of luminosity, it may be possible to use this process to such detect resonances if there are two large extra dimensions and the string scale is not too far above a TeV…
We investigate the prospects for discovering axion-like particles (ALPs) via a light-by-light (LBL) scattering at two colliders, the future circular collider (FCC-ee) and circular electron-positron collider (CEPC). The promising sensitivities to the effective ALP-photon coupling $g_{aγγ}$ are obtained. Our numerical results show that the FCC-ee and CEPC might be more sensitive to the ALPs with mass 2 GeV $\sim$ 10 GeV than the LHC and CLIC.
Mass variable \sqrt{\hat{S}_{min}} and its variants were constructed by minimising the parton level center of mass energy that is consistent with all inclusive measurements. They were proposed to have the ability to measure mass scale of new physics in a fully model independent way. In this work we relax the criteria by assuming the availability of partial informations of new physics events and thus constraining this mass variable even further. Starting with two different classes of production topology, i.e. antler and non-antler, we demonstrate the usefulness of these variables to constrain t…
We review some recent arguments supporting the upgrade of the International Linear Collider by a polarized positron beam, in addition to the polarized electron beam. The examples presented here mainly focus on the impact of positron polarization on items relevant to new physics searches, such as the identification of novel interactions in fermion-pair production and the formulation of new CP-sensitive observables. In particular, in addition to the benefits from positron and electron longitudinal polarizations, the advantages in this field of having transverse polarization of both beams are emp…
While our visible Universe could be a 3-brane, some cosmological scenarios consider that other 3-branes could be hidden in the extra-dimensional bulk. Matter disappearance toward a hidden brane is mainly discussed for neutron - both theoretically and experimentally - but other particles are poorly studied. Recent experimental results offer new constraints on positronium or quarkonium invisible decays. In the present work, we show how a two-brane Universe allows for such invisible decays. We put this result in the context of the recent experimental data to constrain the brane energy scale $M_B$…
Many types of new physics can lead to contact interaction-like modifications in $e^+e^-$ processes below direct production threshold. This report summarizes a survey of contact interaction search reaches at the Linear Collider as functions of energy, luminosity and positron polarization. The various tradeoffs between these quantities in such searches are examined in detail.
In this note we analyse the prospects of a future electron-positron collider in testing a particular realisation of a composite Higgs model encompassing partial compositeness, namely, the 4-Dimensional Composite Higgs Model. We study the main Higgs production channels for three possible energy stages and different luminosity options of such a machine and confront our results to the expected experimental accuracies in the various Higgs decay channels accessible herein and, for comparison, also at the Large Hadron Collider.
We examine the effects of invisible particle emission in conjunction with QCD initial state radiation (ISR) on quantities designed to probe the mass scale of new physics at hadron colliders, which involve longitudinal as well as transverse final-state momenta. This is an extension of our previous treatment, arXiv:0903.2013, of the effects of ISR on global inclusive variables. We present resummed results on the visible invariant mass distribution and compare them to parton-level Monte Carlo results for top quark and gluino pair-production at the LHC. There is good agreement as long as the visib…
For contact-interaction searches at the Linear Collider, we discuss the advantages of polarizing both the electron and the positron beams as compared with polarizing only the electron beam. In particular, for the processes e^+e^-\to μ^+μ^-, τ^+τ^-, b\bar{b} and c\bar{c} at a future e^+e^- collider with \sqrt{s}=0.5 TeV we derive model-independent bounds on the four-fermion contact interaction parameters from studies of the helicity cross sections.
The interactions of electroweak gauge bosons are severely constrained by the symmetries inferred from low energy observables. The exploration of the dynamics of electroweak symmetry breaking requires therefore both an experimental sensitivity and a theoretical precision that is better than the natural scale of deviations from minimal extrapolations of the low energy effective theory. Some techniques for obtaining improved theoretical predictions for precision tests at a future e^+e^- linear collider are discussed.
We study the prospects for the exotic Higgs decay mode $h\to ss\to 4τ$ at planned electron-positron colliders in the case where the beyond-the-Standard Model particle $s$ is too light to decay into $b \bar b$ pairs. We find that with 5 ab$^{-1}$ of unpolarized collisions at 240 GeV, the branching ratio into this final state can be constrained to be below $\sim 1.3\times 10^{-4}$ at 95\% CL, depending on the mass of $s$ and the assumed tracking efficiency.
New heavy charged lepton production and decay signatures at future electron-positron colliders are investigated at $\sqrt {s}=500$ GeV. The consequences of model dependence for vector singlets and vector doublets are studied. Distributions are calculated including hadronization effects and experimental cuts that suppress the standard model background. The final state leptonic energy distributions are shown to give a very clear signature for heavy charged leptons.
BES Collaboration has collected 58 million $J/ψ$ events at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider (BEPC). $J/ψ$ decays provide an excellent place for studying excited nucleons and hyperons -- $N^*$, $Λ^*$, $Σ^*$ and $Ξ^*$ resonances. Physics motivation, data status, partial wave analyses and future prospects are presented for the baryon resonance program at BES.
The prospects for discovering Higgs particles and studying their fundamental properties at future high-energy electron-positron and hadron colliders are reviewed. Both the Standard Model Higgs boson and the Higgs particles of its minimal supersymmetric extension are discussed. We update various results by taking into account the new value of the top quark mass obtained by the CDF Collaboration and by including radiative corrections some of which have been calculated only recently.
The associated production of a $Z^{\prime}$ and a final hard photon in high energy electron-positron colliders is studied. It is shown that the hard photon spectrum contains useful information on the $Z^{\prime}$ properties. This remark suggests that, if a new neutral gauge boson exists for $M_{Z^{\prime}} < \sqrt{s}$, it will not be necessary to make a new energy run at the $Z^{\prime}$ mass in order to get most of its properties.
In recent years there have been many proposals for new electron-positron colliders, such as the Circular Electron-Positron Collider, the International Linear Collider, and the Future Circular Collider in electron-positron mode. Much of the motivation for these colliders is precision measurements of the Higgs boson and searches for new electroweak states. Hence, many of these studies are focused on energies above the $h\,Z$ threshold. However, there are proposals to run these colliders at the lower $WW$ threshold and $Z$-pole energies. In this paper, we propose a new search for Higgs physics ac…
We show that the accumulated LEP-II data taken at $\sqrt{s} =$ 130 to 206 GeV can establish more restrictive bounds on doubly charged bileptons couplings and masses than any other experiment so far. We also analyze the discovery potential of a prospective linear collider operating in both $e^+ e^-$ and $e γ$ modes.
One kind of particularly interesting pseudoscalar particles, called axion-like particles (ALPs), have rich physical phenomenology at high- and low-energy collider experiments. After discussing most of single production channels of ALP at electron-positron colliders, we investigate the possibility of detecting this kind of new particles through the W$^{+}$W$^{-}$ fusion process e$^{+}$e$^{-}$ $\rightarrow$ $\overlineν_{e}$$ν_{e}a$ $(\rightarrow γγ)$ at the CLIC. The 3$σ$ and 5$σ$ bounds on the ALP parameter space at the three energy stages of the CLIC are obtained. We find that the bounds given…
We explore the scenarios where the only accessible new states at the electroweak scale consist of a pair of color-singlet electroweak particles, whose masses are degenerate at the tree level and split only by electroweak symmetry breaking at the loop level. For the sake of illustration, we consider a supersymmetric model and study the following three representative cases with the lower-lying states as (a) two spin-1/2 Higgsino SU(2)$_L$ doublets, (b) a spin-1/2 wino SU(2)$_L$ triplet and (c) a spin-0 left-handed slepton SU(2)$_L$ doublet. Due to the mass-degeneracy, those lower-lying electrowe…
In the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, the branching ratio for Higgs boson decays to a final state which is invisible to collider detectors, $H \rightarrow ZZ^{\star} \rightarrow ν\barν ν\barν$, is order 0.10%. In theories beyond the SM (BSM), this branching ratio can be enhanced by decays to undiscovered particles like dark matter (DM). At the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the current best upper limit on the branching ratio of invisible Higgs boson decays is 11% at 95% confidence level. We investigate the expected sensitivity to invisible Higgs decays with the Silicon Detector (SiD) a…
The process of electron--positron annihilation into proton--antiproton pair is considered within the vicinity of $ψ(3770)$ resonance. The interference between the pure electromagnetic intermediate state and the $ψ(3770)$ state is evaluated. It is shown that this interference is destructive and the relative phase between these two contributions is large ($ϕ_0 \approx 250^o$).
The electromagnetic processes in linear colliders are discussed on the basis of quasiclassical operator method. The complete set of expressions is written down for spectral probability of radiation from an electron and pair creation by a photon taking into account both electron and photon polarization. Some new formulas are derived for radiation intensity and its asymptotics. The main mechanisms of pair creation dominate at $χ\leq 1$ are discussed.
We explore the techniques, cross sections and expected signal significance for detecting invisible and almost invisible particles at LEP2 and the NLC by means of a hard photon tag. Examples from supersymmetry include the lightest chargino and second lightest neutralino when their masses are nearly the same as that of the lightest neutralino (the LSP), and invisibly decaying sneutrinos. The importance of particular features of the detectors is discussed, instrumentation for vetoing a fast e^+ or e^- in the beam hole being especially crucial.
The $[SU(3)]^4$ quartification model of Babu, Ma, and Willenbrock (BMW), proposed in 2003, predicts a confining leptonic color $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry, which becomes strong at the keV scale. It also predicts the existence of three families of half-charged leptons (hemions) below the TeV scale. These hemions are confined to form bound states which are not so easy to discover at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). However, just as $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ appeared as sharp resonances in $e^-e^+$ colliders of the 20th century, the corresponding 'hemionium' states are expected at a future $e^-e^+$ collider of th…
Lepton flavor violating interactions are absent in the standard model but are expected in various beyond standard models. In this work, the potential of the future circular electron-positron collider to probe the four fermion lepton flavor couplings via the $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow e^{\pm}τ^{\mp}$ process is revisited by means of an effective field theory approach. We provide constraints at $95\%$ CL on the dimension-six Wilson coefficients including major sources of background processes and considering realistic detector effects at four expected operation energies $\sqrt{s}=157.5$, $162.5$, $24…

We study the phenomenology of the exotic Higgs bosons in the Georgi-Machacek model at future electron-positron colliders such as the International Linear Collider (ILC), assuming the collision energies of 500 GeV and 1 TeV. We show that the existence of the neutral and singly-charged Higgs bosons in the 5-plet representation under the custodial $SU(2)_V$ symmetry can be readily identified by studying various energy and invariant mass distributions of the $W^+W^-Z$ final state. Moreover, their masses can be determined with sufficiently high precision to test the mass degeneracy, a feature due t…
We study the impact of fermionic dark matter (DM) on projected Higgs precision measurements at the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC), including the one-loop effects on the $e^+e^-\to Zh$ cross section and the Higgs boson diphoton decay, as well as the tree-level effects on the Higgs boson invisible decay. As illuminating examples, we discuss two UV-complete DM models, whose dark sector contains electroweak multiplets that interact with the Higgs boson via Yukawa couplings. The CEPC sensitivity to these models and current constraints from DM detection and collider experiments are inves…
We study the collider phenomenology of the electroweak phase transition and electroweak baryogenesis in the framework of the effective field theory. Our study shows that the effective theory using the dimension-6 operators can enforce strong first order phase transition and provide sizable CP violation to realize a successful electroweak baryogenesis. Such dimension-6 operators can induce interesting Higgs phenomenology that can be verified at colliders such as the LHC and the planning CEPC. We then demonstrate that this effective theory can originate from vector-like quarks and the triplet Hi…
In this work is presented several results for cross sections of exotic particles production in electron-positron collisions in future linear electron-positron colliders. It is shown that the central production of exotic leptons, dilatons, radions, axions and technipions in this type of collision can be measurable for the predicted kinematic parameters for linear colliders.
One of the most challenging tasks for future high-luminosity electron-positron colliders is to extract Higgs triple coupling. It was proposed that this can be carried out via the precisely measuring the cross section of ZH associated production up to $0.4\%$. In this paper, we example the possible heavy pollution from Higgs-top anomalous coupling. Our numerical results show that the pollution is small for $\sqrt{s}_{e^+e^-}= 240 GeV$. However for the higher energy collider, pollution is sizable, which should be taken into account. We further explored the possibility to measure CP-violated Higg…
In this Letter we investigate the possible emission of low-energy electron neutrinos and electron-positron pairs of anomalously large multiplicity in close-to-central $pp$ collisions at LHC. The scenario is based on confining SU(2) Yang-Mills dynamics of Hagedorn temperature $\sim m_e=511 $keV being responsible for the emergence of the lightest lepton family and the weak interactions of the Standard Model. Although cut off by LHC's detectors these electrons-positron bursts would be seen indirectly by a large defect energy and thus an anomalously strong decrease of events with interesting high-…
For the first time, the production of a massive dark photon (DP) in the $γe^-$ scattering at the future lepton colliders ILC, CLIC, and CEPC is examined. The invisible decay mode of the DP is addressed. We have studied both the unpolarized scattering and the collision of the Compton backscattered photons with the polarized electron. The missing energy distributions are shown. We have considered the wide range 10 GeV -- 1000 GeV of the DP mass $m_{A'}$. The excluded regions at the 95\% C.L. in the plane $(\varepsilon, m_{A'})$, where $\varepsilon$ is the kinetic mixing parameter, are obtained.
We calculate the production rate of gauge-boson pairs at $e^+e^-$ colliders in a model with a ``hidden'' electroweak symmetry breaking sector - i.e. one in which there are a large number of particles in the symmetry breaking sector other than the $W^{\pm}$ \thinspace and the $Z^0$. In such a model, the elastic $W^{\pm}$ \thinspace and $Z^0$ scattering amplitudes are small and structureless, i.e. lacking any discernable resonances, at all energies. We show that two gauge boson fusion signal of electroweak symmetry breaking is swamped by the background. Therefore, we cannot rely on gauge boson p…
The search for a dark photon produced at $e^{+}e^{-}$ colliders which subsequently decays into inelastic dark matter particles, is discussed. The heavier dark matter decays into a pair of visible charged particles and a lighter dark matter particle after traveling some distance. The visible decay products can be recorded by a dark matter detector made of emulsions and gas detectors, placed near the main $e^{+}e^{-}$ detector. This setup can not only explore new parameter regions not reached before, but also re-open some regions thought to be excluded by previous experimental data. The physics …
The mono-photon signature emerging in an E6 Supersymmetric Standard Model (E6SSM) from inert higgsino Dark Matter (DM) is analyzed at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. As the inert neutral and charged higgsinos are nearly degenerate, the inert chargino is a rather long lived particle and the charged particle associated with its decay to the inert higgsino is quite soft. We show that the pair production of inert charginos at a 500 GeV electron-positron collider with an initial or final state photon is the most promising channel for probing the inert higgsino as one DM candidate within the E6SSM. We al…
We discuss the possibility of detecting a Higgs boson in electron-positron collider experiments if large extra dimensions are realized in nature. In such a case, the Higgs boson can decay invisibly by oscillating into a graviscalar Kaluza-Klein (KK) tower. We show that the search for such a Higgs at an $e^+ e^-$ linear collider entails more complications than are usually thought of in relation to an invisibly decaying Higgs.
We probe the dimension-six operators contributing to Higgs production in association with a $Z$ boson at the future high-luminosity electron-positron colliders. Potential constraints on dimension-six operators in the Higgs sector are determined by performing a shape analysis on the differential angular distribution of the Higgs and $Z$ boson decay products. The analysis is performed at the center-of-mass energies of 350 and 500 GeV including a realistic detector simulation and the main sources of background processes. The 68\% and 95\% confidence level upper limits are obtained on the contribu…
We consider the production process e-e+ -> Gγof invisible gravitons (G) at future linear colliders. We discuss whether the angular distribution of the photon (γ) can be used to measure the spin of the invisible graviton, or of any other invisible objects produced. We propose a method based on the Fourier expansion of the transverse energy squared moment distribution of the photon. We provide justification for this method, and confirm, especially for the case of two extra dimensions, that the method is valid within a realistic setup, which includes the simulation of the Standard Model backgroun…
The possibility of a scalar messenger that can couple the Standard Model (SM) to a hidden sector has been discussed in a variety of contexts in the literature in recent years. We consider the case that a new scalar singlet charged under an exotic spontaneously broken Abelian gauge symmetry mixes weakly with the SM Higgs resulting in two scalar mass states, one of which has heavily suppressed couplings to the SM particles. Previous phenomenological studies have focussed on potential signatures for such a model at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). However, there are interesting regions of the par…
The mass-constraining variable $M_2$, a $(1+3)$-dimensional natural successor of extremely popular $M_{T2}$, possesses an array of rich features having the ability to use on-shell mass constraints in semi-invisible production at a hadron collider. In this work, we investigate the consequence of applying a heavy resonance mass-shell constraint in the context of a semi-invisible antler decay topology produced at the LHC. Our proposed variable, under additional constraint, develops a new kink solution at the true masses. This enables one to determine the invisible particle mass simultaneously wit…
We explore the collider signatures of the Higgs sectors in singlet-extended MSSM models. We find that even with reduced couplings due to singlet mixing, a significant portion of the parameter spaces have a discoverable Higgs via traditional decay modes or via invisible decays (directly to neutralinos or through cascade decays to neutralinos and neutrinos). For illustrative points in parameter space we give the likelihood of Higgs discovery. In cases where neither traditional nor invisible modes can discover the Higgs, the neutralino sector may provide evidence for the extended models.
Many extensions of the Standard Model (SM) predict new neutral vector bosons at energies accessible by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We study an extension of the SM with new chiral fermions subject to non-trivial anomaly cancellations. If the new fermions have SM charges, but are too heavy to be created at LHC, and the SM fermions are not charged under the extra gauge field, one would expect that this new sector remains completely invisible at LHC. We show, however, that a non-trivial anomaly cancellation between the new heavy fermions may give rise to observable effects in the gauge boson …
