Recently a significant interest in ferromagnetic curved thin films has appeared. In particular, thin spherical shells are currently of great interest due to their capability to support skyrmion solutions which can be stabilized by curvature effects only, in contrast to the planar case where the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is required. This paper aims to a $Γ$-asymptotic analysis of the micromagnetic energy functional, when the shell is generated, like in the case of a sphere, by a bounded, convex and smooth surface.
We prove some C^{1,α} regularity in some gradient constraint problem and application to Torsion problem and micromagnetic problem and variational inequality.
We consider the three-dimensional micromagnetic model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in a thin-film regime. We prove the Gamma-convergence of the micromagnetic energy in the considered regime, for which the Gamma-limit energy is two-dimensional and relevant for boundary vortices. We then study local minimizers of the Gamma-limit energy and prove a uniqueness result in a certain setting.
In this paper, we study the thin-film limit of the micromagnetic energy functional in the presence of bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Our analysis includes both a stationary $Γ$-convergence result for the micromagnetic energy, as well as the identification of the asymptotic behavior of the associated Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. In particular, we prove that, in the limiting model, part of the DMI term behaves like the projection of the magnetic moment onto the normal to the film, contributing this way to an increase in the shape anisotropy arising from the magnetostatic self…
The asymptotic behavior of the micromagnetic free energy governing a ferromagnetic film is studied as its thickness gets smaller and smaller compared to its cross section. Here the static Maxwell equations are treated as a Murat's constant-rank PDE constraint on the energy functional. In contrast to previous work this approach allows to keep track of the induced magnetic field without solving the magnetostatic equations. In particular, the mathematical results of Gioia and James [Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A 453 (1997), pp. 213-223] regarding convergence of minimizers are recovered by giving a charac…
Ferromagnetic materials are governed by a variational principle which is nonlocal, nonconvex and multiscale. The main object is given by a unit-length three-dimensional vector field, the magnetization, that corresponds to the stable states of the micromagnetic energy. Our aim is to analyze a thin film regime that captures the asymptotic behavior of boundary vortices generated by the magnetization and their interaction energy. This study is based on the notion of "global Jacobian" detecting the topological defects that a priori could be located in the interior and at the boundary of the film. A…
We deal with a nonconvex and nonlocal variational problem coming from thin-film micromagnetics. It consists in a free-energy functional depending on two small parameters $\eps$ and $η$ and defined over $S^2-$vector fields $m$ that are tangent at the boundary of a two-dimensional domain $Ω$. We are interested in the behavior of minimizers as $\eps, η\to 0$. The minimizers tend to be in-plane away from a region of length scale $\eps$ (generically, an interior vortex ball or two boundary vortex balls) and of vanishing divergence, so that $S^1-$transition layers of length scale $η$ (Néel walls) ar…
We investigate the curved thin-film limit of a family of perturbed Dirichlet energies in the space of $H^1$ Sobolev maps defined in a tubular neighborhood of an $(n - 1)$-dimensional submanifold $N$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ and with values in an $(m - 1)$-dimensional submanifold $M$ of $\mathbb{R}^m$. The perturbation $\mathsf{K}$ that we consider is represented by a matrix-valued function defined on $M$ and with values in $\mathbb{R}^{m \times n}$. Under natural regularity hypotheses on $N$, $M$, and $\mathsf{K}$, we show that the family of these energies converges, in the sense of $Γ$-convergence, …
We consider a thin film limit of a Landau-de Gennes Q-tensor model. In the limiting process we observe a continuous transition where the normal and tangential parts of the Q-tensor decouple and various intrinsic and extrinsic contributions emerge. Main properties of the thin film model, like uniaxiality and parameter phase space, are preserved in the limiting process. For the derived surface Landau-de Gennes model, we consider an L2-gradient flow. The resulting tensor-valued surface partial differential equation is numerically solved to demonstrate realizations of the tight coupling of elastic…
We consider a second order thin curved film whose behavior is governed by an energy made up of a first order nonlinear part depending on the gradient of the deformation augmented by a quadratic second order part depending on the tensor of second derivatives of the deformation. We carry out a 3D-2D analysis through an asymptotic expansion in powers of the thickness of the film as it tends to zero.
We study existence and properties of one-dimensional edge domain walls in ultrathin ferromagnetic films with uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy. In these materials, the magnetization vector is constrained to lie entirely in the film plane, with the preferred directions dictated by the magnetocrystalline easy axis. We consider magnetization profiles in the vicinity of a straight film edge oriented at an arbitrary angle with respect to the easy axis. To minimize the micromagnetic energy, these profiles form transition layers in which the magnetization vector rotates away from the direction of…
We investigate the scaling of the ground state energy and optimal domain patterns in thin ferromagnetic films with strong uniaxial anisotropy and the easy axis perpendicular to the film plane. Starting from the full three-dimensional micromagnetic model, we identify the critical scaling where the transition from single domain to multidomain ground states such as bubble or maze patterns occurs. Furthermore, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the energy in two regimes separated by a transition. In the single domain regime, the energy $Γ$-converges towards a much simpler two-dimensional and lo…
We focus on a special type of domain walls appearing in the Landau-Lifshitz theory for soft ferromagnetic films. These domain walls are divergence-free $S^2$-valued transition layers that connect two directions in $S^2$ (differing by an angle $2θ$) and minimize the Dirichlet energy. Our main result is the rigorous derivation of the asymptotic structure and energy of such "asymmetric" domain walls in the limit $θ\to 0$. As an application, we deduce that a supercritical bifurcation causes the transition from symmetric to asymmetric walls in the full micromagnetic model.
We use the method of $Γ$-convergence to study the behavior of the Landau-de Gennes model for a nematic liquid crystalline film attached to a general fixed surface in the limit of vanishing thickness. This paper generalizes the approach that we used previously to study a similar problem for a planar surface. Since the anchoring energy dominates when the thickness of the film is small, it is essential to understand its influence on the structure of the minimizers of the limiting energy. In particular, the anchoring energy dictates the class of admissible competitors and the structure of the limi…

We consider the Navier-Stokes equations with Navier's slip boundary conditions in a three-dimensional curved thin domain around a given closed surface. Under suitable assumptions we show that the average in the thin direction of a strong solution to the bulk Navier-Stokes equations converges weakly in appropriate function spaces on the limit surface as the thickness of the thin domain tends to zero. Moreover, we characterize the limit as a weak solution to limit equations, which are the damped and weighted Navier-Stokes equations on the limit surface. We also prove the strong convergence of th…
We characterize skyrmions in ultrathin ferromagnetic films as local minimizers of a reduced micromagnetic energy appropriate for quasi two-dimensional materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The minimization is carried out in a suitable class of two-dimensional magnetization configurations that prevents the energy from going to negative infinity, while not imposing any restrictions on the spatial scale of the configuration. We first demonstrate existence of minimizers for an explicit range of the model parameters when the energy is do…
We present an analysis of edge domain walls in exchange-biased ferromagnetic films appearing as a result of a competition between the stray field at the film edges and the exchange bias field in the bulk. We introduce an effective two-dimensional micromagnetic energy that governs the magnetization behavior in exchange-biased materials and investigate its energy minimizers in the strip geometry. In a periodic setting, we provide a complete characterization of global energy minimizers corresponding to edge domain walls. In particular, we show that energy minimizers are one-dimensional and do not…
