For the general Two-Higgs-Doublet model, we present conditions for having spontaneous CP violation, in terms of physical masses and couplings. These relations involve the charged-Higgs mass, its cubic couplings with neutral scalars and quartic coupling, and become particularly simple in the alignment limit. In the simplified model with softly broken $Z_2$ symmetry, some deviation from alignment is required for spontaneous CP violation to be present.
We study an extension of the Standard Model (SM) in which two copies of the SM Higgs doublet are added to the scalar sector. These extra doublets do not develop a vacuum expectation value, hence, they are \textit{inert}. This essentially leads to a 3-Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM) with 2 inert and 1 active scalar doublets, which we denote as I(2+1)HDM. We allow for CP-violation in the \textit{inert} sector, where the lightest \textit{inert} state is protected from decaying to SM particles through the conservation of a $Z_2$ symmetry, so that it is a Dark Matter (DM) candidate. For this scenario, w…
Conditions for spontaneous Charge-Parity (CP) violation in the scalar potential sector of general $S(3)$ Higgs-doublet model (3HDM) are analyzed. An analysis of the Higgs sector of the minimal $S(3)$-invariant extension of the Standard Model including CP violation arising from the spontaneous breaking of the electroweak symmetry is presented. This extended Higgs sector with three SU(2) doublets Higgs fields with complex vev's provides an interesting scenario to analyze the Higgs masses spectrum, trilinear self-couplings and CP violation. We present how the spontaneous electroweak symmetry brea…
Models of spontaneous CP violation can solve the Strong CP problem without the need of an anomalous Peccei-Quinn symmetry. In this work we review the Nelson-Barr approach, quantifying a peculiar coincidence between unrelated mass scales that these models must satisfy in order to correctly reproduce the Standard Model quark masses and CP violation. We investigate the compatibility between this requirement and the induced radiative corrections to the neutron electric dipole moment, and with bounds coming from collider, electroweak and flavor observables.
We present a systematic spurion setup called Aligned Flavor Violation (AFV) that allows for new physics couplings to quarks that are aligned with the Standard Model (SM) Yukawas, but do not necessarily share their hierarchies nor are family universal. Additionally, we show that there is an important subset of AFV called Spontaneous Flavor Violation (SFV), which naturally arises from UV completions where the quark family number and CP groups are spontaneously broken. Flavor-changing neutral currents are strongly suppressed in SFV extensions of the SM. We study SFV from an effective field theory…
We study spontaneous CP violation as a solution to the strong CP problem in left-right symmetric theories. The discrete CP symmetry is broken by a complex vacuum expectation value of a right-handed Higgs doublet. Heavy vectorlike down-type quarks mix with the Standard Model quarks introducing the known CP violation - realizing a variant of the Nelson-Barr mechanism. A nonvanishing QCD vacuum angle is generated at loop level. The implementation in the ultraviolet complete theory of trinification at low scales is discussed. We further comment on the phenomenology and future testability of the mo…
Motivated by discrete flavour symmetry models, we analyse Spontaneous CP Violation (SCPV) for potentials involving three or six Higgs fields (both electroweak doublets and singlets) which fall into irreducible triplet representations of discrete symmetries belonging to the $Δ(3n^2)$ and $Δ(6n^2)$ series, including $A_4$, $S_4$, $Δ(27)$ and $Δ(54)$. For each case, we give the potential and find various global mimima for different regions of the parameter space of the potential. Using CP-odd basis Invariants that indicate the presence of Spontaneous CP Violation we separate the VEVs into those t…
We propose simple scoto-seesaw models to account for dark matter and neutrino masses with spontaneous CP violation. This is achieved with a single horizontal $\mathcal{Z}_8$ discrete symmetry, broken to a residual $\mathcal{Z}_2$ subgroup responsible for stabilizing dark matter. CP is broken spontaneously via the complex vacuum expectation value of a scalar singlet, inducing leptonic CP-violating effects. We find that the imposed $\mathcal{Z}_8$ symmetry pushes the values of the Dirac CP phase and the lightest neutrino mass to ranges already probed by ongoing experiments, so that normal-ordere…
The vacuum of the Standard Model is known to be unstable for the measured values of the top and Higgs masses. Here we show how vacuum stability can be achieved naturally if lepton number is violated spontaneously at the TeV scale. More precise Higgs measurements in the next LHC run should provide a crucial test of our symmetry breaking scenario. In addition, these schemes typically lead to enhanced rates for processes involving lepton flavour violation .
