Formation of a molecular ion by photoassociative Raman processes

We show theoretically that it is possible to form a cold molecular ion from a pair of colliding atom and ion at low energy by photoassociative two-photon Raman processes. We explore the possibility of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) from the continuum of ion-atom scattering states to an ionic molecular state. We provide physical conditions under which coherent population transfer is possible in stimulated Raman photoassociation. Our results are important for experimental realization of PA in ion-atom cold collisions.

Bose-Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage in Photoassociation

We analyze coherent two-color photoassociation of a Bose-Einstein condensate, focusing on stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) in free-bound-bound transitions from atoms to molecules. Photodissociation of trapped Rb$^+_2$ : Implications for simultaneous trapping of atoms and molecular ions

The direct photodissociation of trapped $^{85}$Rb$_2^+$ (rubidium) molecular ions by the cooling light for the $^{85}$Rb magneto-optical trap (MOT) is studied, both experimentally and theoretically. Vibrationally excited Rb$_{2}^{+}$ ions are created by photoionization of Rb$_{2}$ molecules formed photoassociatively in the Rb MOT and are trapped in a modified spherical Paul trap. Raman sideband cooling of $^{25}$Mg$^+$ -$^{27}$Al$^+$ ions pair and observation of quantum logic spectra

We perform quantum logic spectroscopy (QLS) on $^{27}$Al$^+$ ion $^1$S$_0$ - $^3$P$_1$ transition, which is an important step toward the QLS based $^{27}$Al$^+$ ion optical clock. As a precondition of QLS, both the stretch (STR) mode and the common (COM) mode of the $^{27}$Al$^+$ and $^{25}$Mg$^+$ ions pair are cooled to the vibrational ground state by Raman sideband cooling. The mean phonon number is measured to be 0.10(1) for the STR mode and 0.01(1) for the COM mode, respectively. The heating rate is evaluated to be 13(3) phonons/s for the STR mode and 5.5(1) phonons/s for the COM mode.

Continuous Raman sideband cooling beyond the Lamb-Dicke Regime in a trapped ion chain

We report continuous Raman sideband cooling (CRSC) of a long ion chain to the motional ground state beyond the Lamb-Dicke (LD) regime. By driving multiple sideband transitions simultaneously, we show that nearly all axial modes of a 24-ion chain are cooled to the ground state, with an LD parameter as large as $η= 1.3$, spanning a frequency bandwidth of 4 MHz. Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage for Improved Performance of a Cold Atom Electron and Ion Source

We implement high-efficiency coherent excitation to a Rydberg state using stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in a cold atom electron and ion source. We achieve an efficiency of 60% averaged over the laser excitation volume with a peak efficiency of 82%, a 1.6 times improvement relative to incoherent pulsed-laser excitation.
