We present a method for the precise determination of the full elasticity tensor from a single crystal diffraction experiment using monochromatic X-rays. For the two benchmark systems calcite and magnesium oxide we show that the measurement of thermal diffuse scattering in the proximity of Bragg reflections provides accurate values of the complete set of elastic constants. This approach allows for a reliable and model free determination of the elastic properties and can be performed together with crystal structure investigation in the same experiment.
We report on the determination of high-pressure elasticity from thermal diffuse x-ray scattering of magnesium oxide at pressures up to 28 GPa. We find that the full elasticity tensor as a function of pressure can be extracted from x-ray scattering of single crystals. This enables the simultaneous measurement of elasticity and crystal structure from a single experiment and thus marks a decisive step towards establishing reliable calibration for extreme pressures. Elastic constants can be extracted with this method from small crystals of arbitrary symmetry, shape and optical properties and will …
We derive the Green tensor of Mindlin's anisotropic first strain gradient elasticity. The Green tensor is valid for arbitrary anisotropic materials, with up to 21 elastic constants and 171 gradient elastic constants in the general case of triclinic media. In contrast to its classical counterpart, the Green tensor is non-singular at the origin, and it converges to the classical tensor a few characteristic lengths away from the origin. Therefore, the Green tensor of Mindlin's first strain gradient elasticity can be regarded as a physical regularization of the classical anisotropic Green tensor. …
Mechanical couplings such as axial-shear and axial-bending have great potential in the design of active mechanical metamaterials with directional control of input and output loads in sensors and actuators. However, the current ad hoc design of mechanical coupling without theoretical support of elasticity cannot provide design guidelines for mechanical coupling with lattice geometries. Moreover, the correlation between mechanical coupling effects and geometric symmetry is not yet clearly understood. In this work, we systematically search for all possible mechanical couplings in 2D lattice struc…
The present work provides fundamental quantities in generalized elasticity and dislocation theory of quasicrystals. In a clear and straightforward manner, the three-dimensional Green tensor of generalized elasticity theory and the extended displacement vector for an arbitrary extended force are derived. Next, in the framework of dislocation theory of quasicrystals, the solutions of the field equations for the extended displacement vector and the extended elastic distortion tensor are given; that is the generalized Burgers equation for arbitrary sources and the generalized Mura-Willis formula, …
The interaction of anisotropic point defects in anisotropic media is studied in the framework of anisotropic elasticity with eigendistortion. For this purpose key-equations and their solutions for anisotropic point defects in an anisotropic medium based on the anisotropic Green tensor are derived. The material force, interaction energy and torque between two point defects as well as between a point defect and a dislocation loop are given. We discuss so-called contact terms and point out similarities between elastic, electric, and magnetic dipoles. The plastic, the elastic and the total volume …
The (static) energy momentum tensor, angular momentum tensor and scaling flux vector of micropolar elasticity are derived within the framework of Noether's theorem on variational principles. Certain balance (or broken conservation) laws of broken translational, rotational and dilatational symmetries are found including inhomogeneities, elastic anisotropy, body forces, body couples and dislocations and disclinations present. The non-conserved J-, L- and M-integrals of micropolar elasticity are derived and discussed. We give explicit formulae for the configurational forces, moments and work term…
We investigate linear theories of incompatible micromorphic elasticity, incompatible microstretch elasticity, incompatible micropolar elasticity and the incompatible dilatation theory of elasticity (elasticity with voids). The incompatibility conditions and Bianchi identities are derived and discussed. The Eshelby stress tensor (static energy momentum) is calculated for such inhomogeneous media with microstructure. Its divergence gives the driving forces for dislocations, disclinations, point defects and inhomogeneities which are called configurational forces.
In isotropic strain gradient elasticity, we decompose the strain gradient tensor into its irreducible pieces under the n-dimensional orthogonal group O(n). Using the Young tableau method for traceless tensors, four irreducible pieces (n>2), which are canonical, are obtained. In three dimensions, the strain gradient tensor can be decomposed into four irreducible pieces with 7+5+3+3 independent components whereas in two dimensions, the strain gradient tensor can be decomposed into three irreducible pieces with 2+2+2 independent components. The knowledge of these irreducible pieces is extremely u…
In linear elasticity, a fourth order elasticity (stiffness) tensor of 21 independent components completely describes deformation properties of a material. Due to Voigt, this tensor is conventionally represented by a $6\times 6$ symmetric matrix. This classical matrix representation does not conform with the irreducible decomposition of the elasticity tensor. In this paper, we construct two alternative matrix representations. The $3\times 7$ matrix representation is in a correspondence with the permutation transformations of indices and with the general linear transformation of the basis. An ad…
The set $GU_f$ of possible effective elastic tensors of composites built from two materials with positive definite elasticity tensors $\BC_1$ and $\BC_2=\Gd\BC_0$ comprising the set $U=\{\BC_1,\Gd\BC_0\}$ and mixed in proportions $f$ and $1-f$ is partly characterized in the limit $\Gd\to\infty$. The material with tensor $\BC_2$ corresponds to a material which (for technical reasons) is almost rigid in the limit $\Gd\to \infty$. The paper, and the underlying microgeometries, have many aspects in common with the companion paper "On the possible effective elasticity tensors of 2-dimensional print…
The set $GU_f$ of possible effective elastic tensors of composites built from two materials with elasticity tensors $\BC_1>0$ and $\BC_2=0$ comprising the set $U=\{\BC_1,\BC_2\}$ and mixed in proportions $f$ and $1-f$ is partly characterized. The material with tensor $\BC_2=0$ corresponds to a material which is void. (For technical reasons $\BC_2$ is actually taken to be nonzero and we take the limit $\BC_2\to 0$). Specifically, recalling that $GU_f$ is completely characterized through minimums of sums of energies, involving a set of applied strains, and complementary energies, involving a set…
In the present work, 3D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are trained to link random heterogeneous, two-phase materials of arbitrary phase fractions to their elastic macroscale stiffness thus replacing explicit homogenization simulations. In order to reduce the uncertainty of the true stiffness of the synthetic composites due to unknown boundary conditions (BCs), the CNNs predict beyond the stiffness for periodic BC the upper bound through kinematically uniform BC, and the lower bound through stress uniform BC. This work describes the workflow of the homogenization-CNN, from microstructure …
In this work, dislocation master-equations valid for anisotropic materials are derived in terms of kernel functions using the framework of micromechanics. The second derivative of the anisotropic Green tensor is calculated in the sense of generalized functions and decomposed into a sum of a $1/R^3$-term plus a Dirac $δ$-term. The first term is the so-called "Barnett-term" and the latter is important for the definition of the Green tensor as fundamental solution of the Navier equation. In addition, all dislocation master-equations are specified for Somigliana dislocations with application to 3D…

Third-order elasticity (TOE) theory is predictive of strain-induced changes in second-order elastic coefficients (SOECs) and can model elastic wave propagation in stressed media. Although third-order elastic tensors have been determined based on first principles in previous studies, their current definition is based on an expansion of thermodynamic energy in terms of the Lagrangian strain near the natural, or zero pressure, reference state. This definition is inconvenient for predictions of SOECs under significant initial stresses. Therefore, when TOE theory is necessary to study the strain de…
We introduce a mathematical model, based on networks, for the elasticity and plasticity of materials. We define the tension tensor for a periodic graph in a Euclidean space, and we show that the tension tensor expresses elasticity under deformation. Plasticity is induced by local moves on a graph. The graph is described in terms of the weights of edges, and we discuss how these weights affect the plasticity.
We investigate the elastic properties of selected zincblende III-V semiconductors. Using hybrid functional density functional theory we calculate the second and third order elastic constants, and first and second-order internal strain tensor components for Ga, In and Al containing III-V compounds. For many of these parameters, there are no available experimental measurements, and this work is the first to predict their values. The stricter convergence criteria for the calculation of higher order elastic constants are demonstrated, and arguments are made based on this for extracting these const…
