We derive optimal-work finite time protocols for a colloidal particle in a Gaussian well in the general non-Markovian underdamped regime in contact with a single reservoir. Optimal work protocols with and without measurements of position and velocity are shown to be linear in time. In order to treat the underdamped regime one must address forcing the particle at the start and at the end of a protocol, conditions which dominate the short time behaviour of the colloidal particle. We find that for protocols without measurement the least work by an external agent decreases linearly for forced start-stop conditions while those only forced at starting conditions are quadratic (slower) at short times, while both decrease asymptotically to zero for quais-static processes. When measurements are performed protocols with start-end forcing are still more efficient at short times but can be overtaken by start-only protocols at a threshold time. Measurement protocols derive work from the reservoir but always below the predicted by the Sagawa's generalization of the second law. Velocity measurement protocols are more efficient in deriving work than position measurements.
After establishing stochastic thermodynamics for underdamped Langevin systems in contact with multiple reservoirs, we derive its overdamped limit using timescale separation techniques. The overdamped theory is different from the naive theory that one obtains when starting from overdamped Langevin or Fokker-Planck dynamics and only coincide with it in presence of a single reservoir. The reason is that the coarse-grained fast momenta dynamics reaches a nonequilibrium state which conducts heat in presence of multiple reservoirs. The underdamped and overdamped theory are both shown to satisfy fund…
Active Brownian engines rectify energy from reservoirs composed of self-propelling non-equilibrium molecules into work. We consider a class of such engines based on an underdamped Brownian particle trapped in a power-law potential. The energy they transform has thermodynamic properties of heat only if the non-equilibrium reservoir can be assigned a suitable effective temperature consistent with the second law and thus yielding an upper bound on the engine efficiency. The effective temperature exists if the total force exerted on the particle by the bath is not correlated with the particle posi…
We show that non-Markovian effects of the reservoirs can be used as a resource to extract work from an Otto cycle. The state transformation under non-Markovian dynamics is achieved via a two-step process, namely an isothermal process using a Markovian reservoir followed by an adiabatic process. From second law of thermodynamics, we show that the maximum amount of extractable work from the state prepared under the non-Markovian dynamics quantifies a lower bound of non-Markovianity. We illustrate our ideas with an explicit example of non-Markovian evolution.
We study the non-Markovian entanglement dynamics of two qubits in a common squeezed bath. We see remarkable difference between the non-Markovian entanglement dynamics with its Markovian counterpart. We show that a non-Markovian decoherence free state is also decoherence free in the Markovian regime, but all the Markovian decoherence free states are not necessarily decoherence free in the non-Markovian domain. We extend our calculation from squeezed vacuum bath to squeezed thermal bath, where we see the effect of finite bath temperatures on the entanglement dynamics.
Motivated by the dynamics of resonant neurons we consider a differentiable, non-Markovian random process $x(t)$ and particularly the time after which it will reach a certain level $x_b$. The probability density of this first passage time is expressed as infinite series of integrals over joint probability densities of $x$ and its velocity $\dot{x}$. Approximating higher order terms of this series through the lower order ones leads to closed expressions in the cases of vanishing and moderate correlations between subsequent crossings of $x_b$. For a linear oscillator driven by white or coloured G…
Starting from the stochastic thermodynamics description of two coupled underdamped Brownian particles, we showcase and compare three different coarse-graining schemes leading to an effective thermodynamic description for the first of the two particles: marginalization over one particle, bipartite structure with information flows and the Hamiltonian of mean force formalism. In the limit of time-scale separation where the second particle with a fast relaxation time scale locally equilibrates with respect to the coordinates of the first slowly relaxing particle, the effective thermodynamics resul…
We investigate the stochastic behavior of a two-temperature Langevin system with non-Markovian thermal reservoirs. The model describes an overdamped Brownian particle in a quadratic potential and coupled to heat baths at different temperatures. The reservoirs are characterized by Gaussian white and colored noises and a dissipation memory kernel. The stationary states present non-trivial average rotational motion influenced by stochastic torques due to harmonic, friction and fluctuating thermal forces. However, the Markovian limit leads to a vanishing average torque produced by fluctuating ther…
Using an exact approach, we study the dynamics of entanglement between two qubits coupled to independent reservoirs and between the two, initially disentangled, reservoirs. We also describe the transfer of bipartite entanglement from the two-qubits to their respective reservoirs focussing on the case of two atoms inside two different leaky cavities with a specific attention to the role of the detuning. We present a scheme to prepare the cavity fields in a maximally entangled state, without direct interaction between the cavities, by exploiting the initial qubits entanglement. We discuss a dete…
A minimal model of a quantum thermal machine is analyzed, where a driven two level working medium (WM) is embedded in an environment (reservoir) whose spectrum possesses bandgaps. overlap with hot or cold reservoirs whose spectra are separated by a bandgap. Approximate and exact treatments supported by analytical considerations yield a complete characterization of this thermal machine in the deep quantum domain. For slow to moderate modulation, the spectral response of the reservoirs is close to equilibrium, exhibiting sideband (Floquet) resonances in the heat currents and power output. In con…
Non-Markovian corrections to the Markovian quantum master equation of an open quantum system are investigated up to the second order of the interaction between the system of interest and a thermal reservoir. The concept of "natural correlation" is discussed. When the system is naturally correlated with a thermal reservoir, the time evolution of the reduced density matrix looks Markovian even in a short-time regime. If the total system was initially in an "unnatural" state, the natural correlation is established during the time evolution, and after that the time evolution becomes Markovian in a…
When two chains of quantum systems are driven at their ends by a two-mode squeezed reservoir, they approach a steady state characterized by the formation of many entangled pairs. Each pair is made of one element of the first and one of the second chain. This effect has been already predicted under the assumption of broadband squeezing. Here we investigate the situation of finite-bandwidth reservoirs. This is done by modeling the driving bath as the output field of a non-degenerate parametric oscillator. The resulting non-Markovian dynamics is studied within the theoretical framework of cascade…
The extension of quantum thermodynamics to situations that go beyond standard thermodynamic settings comprises an important and interesting aspect of its development. One such situation is the analysis of the thermodynamic consequences of structured environments that induce a non-Markovian dynamics. We study a quantum Otto refrigerator where the standard Markovian cold reservoir is replaced by a specific engineered cold reservoir which may induce a Markovian or non-Markovian dynamics on the quantum refrigerant system. The two dynamical regimes can be interchanged by varying the coupling betwee…
We study a limit cycle of a quantum Otto engine whose each cycle consists of two finite-time quantum isochoric (heating or cooling) processes and two quantum adiabatic work-extracting processes. Considering a two-level system as a working substance that weakly interacts with two reservoirs comprising an infinite number of bosons, we investigate the non-Markovian effect (short-time behavior of the reduced dynamics in the quantum isochoric processes (QIPs)) on work extraction after infinite repetition of the cycles. We focus on the parameter region where energy transferred to the reservoir can c…
Causality is an important assumption underlying nonequilibrium generalizations of the second law of thermodynamics known as fluctuation relations. We here experimentally study the nonequilibrium statistical properties of the work and of the entropy production for an optically trapped, underdamped nanoparticle continuously subjected to a time-delayed feedback control. Whereas the non-Markovian feedback depends on the past position of the particle for a forward trajectory, it depends on its future position for a time-reversed path, and is therefore acausal. In the steady-state regime, we show th…
Feedback control mechanisms are ubiquitous in science and technology, and play an essential role in regulating physical, biological and engineering systems. The standard second law of thermodynamics does not hold in the presence of measurement and feedback. Most studies so far have extended the second law for discrete, Markovian feedback protocols; however, non-Markovian feedback is omnipresent in processes where the control signal is applied with a non-negligible delay. Here, we experimentally investigate the thermodynamics of continuous, time-delayed feedback control using the motion of an o…
We analyze the appearance of non-Markovian effects in the dynamics of a bipartite system coupled to a reservoir, which can be described within a class of non-Markovian equations given by a generalized Lindblad structure. A novel master equation, which we term quantum Bloch-Boltzmann equation, is derived, describing both motional and internal states of a test particle in a quantum framework. When due to the preparation of the system or to decoherence effects one of the two degrees of freedom is amenable to a classical treatment and not resolved in the final measurement, though relevant for the …
We present a generic, compact formula for the current flowing in interacting and non-interacting systems which are driven out-of-equilibrium by biased reservoirs described by Lindblad jump operators. We show that, in the limit of high temperature and chemical potential, our formula is equivalent to the well-known Meir-Wingreen formula, which describes the current flowing through a system connected to fermionic baths, therefore bridging the gap between the two formalisms. Our formulation gives a systematic way to address the transport properties of correlated systems strongly driven out of equi…
In this paper we present an exact Grassmann stochastic Schrödinger equation for the dynamics of an open fermionic quantum system coupled to a reservoir consisting of a finite or infinite number of fermions. We use this stochastic approach to derive the exact master equation for a fermionic system strongly coupled to electronic reservoirs. The generality and applicability of this Grassmann stochastic approach is justified and exemplified by several quantum open system problems concerning quantum decoherence and quantum transport for both vacuum and finite-temperature fermionic reservoirs. We sh…
We introduce a novel frequency-dependent incoherent pump scheme with a square-shaped spectrum as a way to study strongly correlated photons in arrays of coupled nonlinear resonators. This scheme can be implemented via a reservoir of population-inverted two-level emitters with a broad distribution of transition frequencies. Our proposal is predicted to stabilize a non-equilibrium steady state sharing important features with a zero-temperature equilibrium state with a tunable chemical potential. We confirm the efficiency of our proposal for the Bose-Hubbard model by computing numerically the ste…
Using the functional-integral method, we investigate the effect of a two-level systems thermal reservoir on the single particle dynamics. We find that at low temperatures, within the sub-ohmic regime, the particle becomes {}``dynamically'' localized at long times due to an effective potential generated by the particle-reservoir interaction. This behavior is different from the one obtained for the usual bath of harmonic oscillators and is fundamentally related with the non-Markovian character of the dissipative process.
We investigate a `pseudo thermalization' effect, where an open quantum system coupled to several non-Markovian reservoirs presents an emergent thermal behaviour in spite of its coupling to a non-equilibrated environment. The thermal behaviour is visible at both static and dynamical levels and the system satisfies the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Our analysis is focused on the exactly solvable model of a weakly interacting driven-dissipative Bose gas in presence of frequency-dependent particle pumping and losses, and is based on a quantum Langevin theory, which we derive starting from a mic…
The understanding of memory effects arising from the interaction between system and environment is a key for engineering quantum thermodynamic devices beyond the standard Markovian limit. We study the performance of measurement-based thermal machine whose working medium dynamics is subject to backflow of information from the reservoir via collision based model. In this study, the non-Markovian effect is introduced by allowing for additional unitary interactions between the environments. We present two strategies of realizing non-Markovian dynamics and study their influence on the performance o…
We derive a non-Markovian master equation for the evolution of a class of open quantum systems consisting of quadratic fermionic models coupled to wide-band reservoirs. This is done by providing an explicit correspondence between master equations and non-equilibrium Green's functions approaches. Our findings permit to study non-Markovian regimes characterized by negative decoherence rates. We study the real-time dynamics and the steady-state solution of two illustrative models: a tight-binding and an XY-spin chains. The rich set of phases encountered for the non-equilibrium XY model extends pr…
