Affine variational inequalities (AVI) are an important problem class that generalize systems of linear equations, linear complementarity problems and optimality conditions for quadratic programs. This paper describes PATHAVI, a structure-preserving pivotal approach, that can process (solve or determine infeasible) large-scale sparse instances of the problem efficiently, with theoretical guarantees and at high accuracy. PATHAVI implements a strategy that is known to process models with good theoretical properties without reducing the problem to specialized forms, since such reductions may destroy structure in the models and can lead to very long computational times. We demonstrate formally that PATHAVI implicitly follows the theoretically sound iteration paths, and can be implemented in a large scale setting using existing sparse linear algebra and linear programming techniques without employing a reduction. We also extend the class of problems that PATHAVI can process. The paper demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach by comparison to the PATH solver used on a complementarity reformulation of the AVI in the context of applications in friction contact and Nash Equilibria problems. PATHAVI is a general purpose solver, and freely available under the same conditions as PATH .
The majority of First Order methods for large-scale convex-concave saddle point problems and variational inequalities with monotone operators are proximal algorithms which at every iteration need to minimize over problem's domain X the sum of a linear form and a strongly convex function. To make such an algorithm practical, X should be proximal-friendly -- admit a strongly convex function with easy to minimize linear perturbations. As a byproduct, X admits a computationally cheap Linear Minimization Oracle (LMO) capable to minimize over X linear forms. There are, however, important situations …
This paper establishes several upper and lower estimates for the maximal number of the connected components of the solution sets of monotone affine vector variational inequalities. Our results give a partial solution to Question~2 in [N.D. Yen and J.-C. Yao, \textit{Monotone affine vector variational inequalities}, Optimization 60 (2011), pp. 53--68] and point out that the number depends not only on the number of the criteria but also on the number of variables of the vector variational inequality under investigation.
Efficient computation of trajectories of switched affine systems becomes possible, if for any such hybrid system, we can manage to efficiently compute the sequence of switching times. Once the switching times have been computed, we can easily compute the trajectories between two successive switches as the solution of an affine ODE. Each switching time can be seen as a positive real root of an analytic function, thereby allowing for efficient computation by using root finding algorithms. These algorithms require a finite interval, within which to search for the switching time. In this paper, we…
Jeroslow and Lowe gave an exact geometric characterization of subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ that are projections of mixed-integer linear sets, also known as MILP-representable or MILP-R sets. We give an alternate algebraic characterization by showing that a set is MILP-R {\em if and only if} the set can be described as the intersection of finitely many {\em affine Chvatal inequalities} in continuous variables (termed AC sets). These inequalities are a modification of a concept introduced by Blair and Jeroslow. Unlike the case for linear inequalities, allowing for integer variables in Chvatal inequ…
This paper addresses the robust counterparts of optimization problems containing sums of maxima of linear functions. These problems include many practical problems, e.g.~problems with sums of absolute values, and arise when taking the robust counterpart of a linear inequality that is affine in the decision variables, affine in a parameter with box uncertainty, and affine in a parameter with general uncertainty. In the literature, often the reformulation is used that is exact when there is no uncertainty. However, in robust optimization this reformulation gives an inferior solution and provides…
Jeroslow and Lowe gave an exact geometric characterization of subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$ that are projections of mixed-integer linear sets, a.k.a MILP-representable sets. We give an alternate algebraic characterization by showing that a set is MILP-representable {\em if and only if} the set can be described as the intersection of finitely many {\em affine Chvátal inequalities}. These inequalities are a modification of a concept introduced by Blair and Jeroslow. This gives a sequential variable elimination scheme that, when applied to the MILP representation of a set, explicitly gives the affine…
Motivated by structures that appear in deep neural networks, we investigate nonlinear composite models alternating proximity and affine operators defined on different spaces. We first show that a wide range of activation operators used in neural networks are actually proximity operators. We then establish conditions for the averagedness of the proposed composite constructs and investigate their asymptotic properties. It is shown that the limit of the resulting process solves a variational inequality which, in general, does not derive from a minimization problem.
In this work we provide a computationally tractable procedure for designing affine control policies, applied to constrained, discrete-time, partially observable, linear systems subject to set bounded disturbances, stochastic noise and potentially Markovian switching over a finite horizon. We investigate the situation when performance specifications are expressed via averaged quadratic inequalities on the random state-control trajectory. Our methodology also applies to steering the density of the state-control trajectory under set bounded uncertainty. Our developments are based on expanding the…
The paper concerns with novel first-order methods for monotone variational inequalities. They use a very simple linesearch procedure that takes into account a local information of the operator. Also the methods do not require Lipschitz-continuity of the operator and the linesearch procedure uses only values of the operator. Moreover, when operator is affine our linesearch becomes very simple, namely, it needs only vector-vector multiplication. For all our methods we establish the ergodic convergence rate. Although the proposed methods are very general, sometimes they may show much better perfo…
In this paper, we introduce a class of variational inequalities, where the involved function is the sum of an arbitrary given vector and a homogeneous polynomial defined by a tensor; and we call it the tensor variational inequality (TVI). The TVI is a natural extension of the affine variational inequality and the tensor complementarity problem. We show that a class of multi-person noncooperative games can be formulated as a TVI. In particular, we investigate the global uniqueness and solvability of the TVI. To this end, we first introduce two classes of structured tensors and discuss some rela…
This paper presents a method that generates affine inequalities to strengthen the second-order conic programming (SOCP) relaxation of an alternating current optimal power flow (AC OPF) problem. The affine inequalities serve as cuts to get rid of points outside of the feasible region of AC OPF with semi-definite programming (SDP) relaxation. Hence, the affine inequalities are names as SDP cuts. While AC OPF with SDP relaxation has a high computational complexity, AC OPF with SOCP has a much lower computational complexity. Recent research has found that the feasible region of SDP relaxation is c…

This paper considers variational inequalities (VI) defined by the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) of uncertain functions and provides three stochastic approximation schemes to solve them. All methods use an empirical estimate of the CVaR at each iteration. The first algorithm constrains the iterates to the feasible set using projection. To overcome the computational burden of projections, the second one handles inequality and equality constraints defining the feasible set differently. Particularly, projection onto to the affine subspace defined by the equality constraints is achieved by matri…
Piecewise affine functions are widely used to approximate nonlinear and discontinuous functions. However, most, if not all existing models only deal with fitting continuous functions. In this paper, we investigate the problem of fitting a discontinuous piecewise affine function to given data that lie in an orthogonal grid, where no restriction on the partition is enforced (i.e., its geometric shape can be nonconvex). This is useful for segmentation and denoising when data corresponding to images. We propose a novel Mixed Integer Program (MIP) formulation for the piecewise affine fitting proble…

In this letter, we discuss the problem of optimal control for affine systems in the context of data-driven linear programming. First, we introduce a unified framework for the fixed point characterization of the value function, Q-function and relaxed Bellman operators. Then, in a model-free setting, we show how to synthesize and estimate Bellman inequalities from a small but sufficiently rich dataset. To guarantee exploration richness, we complete the extension of Willem's fundamental lemma to affine systems.
Many problems of systems control theory boil down to solving polynomial equations, polynomial inequalities or polyomial differential equations. Recent advances in convex optimization and real algebraic geometry can be combined to generate approximate solutions in floating point arithmetic. In the first part of the course we describe semidefinite programming (SDP) as an extension of linear programming (LP) to the cone of positive semidefinite matrices. We investigate the geometry of spectrahedra, convex sets defined by linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) or affine sections of the SDP cone. We als…
This paper is concerned with tube-based model predictive control (MPC) for both linear and nonlinear, input-affine continuous-time dynamic systems that are affected by time-varying disturbances. We derive a min-max differential inequality describing the support function of positive robust forward invariant tubes, which can be used to construct a variety of tube-based model predictive controllers. These constructions are conservative, but computationally tractable and their complexity scales linearly with the length of the prediction horizon. In contrast to many existing tube-based MPC implemen…
