A stochastic representation of the dynamics of open quantum systems, suitable for non-perturbative system-reservoir interaction, non-Markovian effects and arbitrarily driven systems is presented. It includes the case of driving on timescales comparable to or shorter than the reservoir correlation time, a notoriously difficult but relevant case in the context of quantum information processing and quantum thermodynamics. A previous stochastic approach is re-formulated for the case of finite reservoir correlation and response times, resulting in a numerical simulation strategy exceeding previous ones by orders of magnitude in efficiency. Although the approach is based on a memory formalism, the dynamical equations propagated in the simulations are time-local. This leaves a wide range of choices in selecting the system to be studied and the numerical method used for propagation. For a series of tests, the dynamics of the spin-boson system is computed in various settings including strong external driving and Landau-Zener transitions.
We derive an exact (classical and quantum) expression for the entropy production of a finite system placed in contact with one or several finite reservoirs each of which is initially described by a canonical equilibrium distribution. Whereas the total entropy of system plus reservoirs is conserved, we show that the system entropy production is always positive and is a direct measure of the system-reservoir correlations and/or entanglements. Using an exactly solvable quantum model, we illustrate our novel interpretation of the Second Law in a microscopically reversible finite-size setting, with…
By using the properties of orthogonal polynomials, we present an exact unitary transformation that maps the Hamiltonian of a quantum system coupled linearly to a continuum of bosonic or fermionic modes to a Hamiltonian that describes a one-dimensional chain with only nearest-neighbour interactions. This analytical transformation predicts a simple set of relations between the parameters of the chain and the recurrence coefficients of the orthogonal polynomials used in the transformation, and allows the chain parameters to be computed using numerically stable algorithms that have been developed …
Using an exact approach, we study the dynamics of entanglement between two qubits coupled to independent reservoirs and between the two, initially disentangled, reservoirs. We also describe the transfer of bipartite entanglement from the two-qubits to their respective reservoirs focussing on the case of two atoms inside two different leaky cavities with a specific attention to the role of the detuning. We present a scheme to prepare the cavity fields in a maximally entangled state, without direct interaction between the cavities, by exploiting the initial qubits entanglement. We discuss a dete…
Redfield theory provides a closed kinetic description of a quantum system in weak contact with a very dense reservoir. Landau-Zener theory does the same for a time-dependent driven system in contact with a sparse reservoir. Using a simple model, we analyze the validity of these two theories by comparing their predictions with exact numerical results. We show that despite their a priori different range of validity, these two descriptions can give rise to an identical quantum master equation. Both theories can be used for a nonequilibrium thermodynamic description which we show is consistent wit…
In this paper we propose the Ising model to study the propagation of water in 2 dimensional (2D) petroleum reservoir in which each bond between its pores has the probability $p$ of being activated. We analyze the water movement pattern in porous media described by Darcy equations by focusing on its geometrical objects. Using Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) technique we numerically show that at $p=p_c\simeq 0.59$, this model lies within the Ising universality class with the diffusivity parameter $κ=3$ and the fractal dimension $D_f=\frac{11}{8}$. We introduce a self-organized critical model in …
We study particle current in a recently proposed model for coherent quantum transport. In this model a system connected to mesoscopic Fermi reservoirs (meso-reservoir) is driven out of equilibrium by the action of super reservoirs thermalized to prescribed temperatures and chemical potentials by a simple dissipative mechanism described by the Lindblad equation. We compare exact (numerical) results with theoretical expectations based on the Landauer formula
Relation among various expressions of the complex admittance for quantum systems in contact with heat reservoir is studied. Exact expressions of the complex admittance are derived in various types of formulations of equations of motion under contact with heat reservoir. Namely, the complex admittance is studied in the relaxation method and the external-field method. In the former method, the admittance is calculated using the Kubo formula for quantum systems in contact with heat reservoir in no external driving fields, while in the latter method the admittance is directly calculated from equat…
We consider the global thermal state of classical and quantum harmonic oscillators that interact with a reservoir. Ohmic damping of the oscillator can be exactly treated with a 1D scalar field reservoir, whereas general non-Ohmic damping is conveniently treated with a continuum reservoir of harmonic oscillators. Using the diagonalized Hamiltonian of the total system, we calculate a number of thermodynamic quantities for the damped oscillator: the mean force internal energy, mean force free energy, and another internal energy based on the free-oscillator Hamiltonian. The classical mean force en…
In this paper we study a catalytically-activated A + A \to 0 reaction taking place on a one-dimensional regular lattice which is brought in contact with a reservoir of A particles. The A particles have a hard-core and undergo continuous exchanges with the reservoir, adsorbing onto the lattice or desorbing back to the reservoir. Some lattice sites possess special, catalytic properties, which induce an immediate reaction between two neighboring A particles as soon as at least one of them lands onto a catalytic site. We consider three situations for the spatial placement of the catalytic sites: r…
We discuss two-dimensional diffusion of a Brownian particle confined to a periodic asymmetric channel with soft walls modeled by a parabolic potential. In the channel, the particle experiences different noise intensities, or temperatures, in the transversal and longitudinal directions. The model is inspired by the famous Feynman's ratchet and pawl. Using ideas of the Fick-Jacobs approximation we derive the mean velocity of the particle, the effective diffusion coefficient, and the stationary probability density in the potential unit cell. The derived results are exact for small channel width. …
In this paper we present an exact Grassmann stochastic Schrödinger equation for the dynamics of an open fermionic quantum system coupled to a reservoir consisting of a finite or infinite number of fermions. We use this stochastic approach to derive the exact master equation for a fermionic system strongly coupled to electronic reservoirs. The generality and applicability of this Grassmann stochastic approach is justified and exemplified by several quantum open system problems concerning quantum decoherence and quantum transport for both vacuum and finite-temperature fermionic reservoirs. We sh…
A minimal model of a quantum thermal machine is analyzed, where a driven two level working medium (WM) is embedded in an environment (reservoir) whose spectrum possesses bandgaps. overlap with hot or cold reservoirs whose spectra are separated by a bandgap. Approximate and exact treatments supported by analytical considerations yield a complete characterization of this thermal machine in the deep quantum domain. For slow to moderate modulation, the spectral response of the reservoirs is close to equilibrium, exhibiting sideband (Floquet) resonances in the heat currents and power output. In con…
We consider heat fluctuations and fluctuation theorems for systems driven by multiple reservoirs. We establish a fundamental symmetry obeyed by the joint probability distribution for the heat transfers and system coordinates. The symmetry leads to a generalisation of the asymptotic fluctuation theorem for large deviations at large times. As a result the presence of multiple reservoirs influence the tails in the heat distribution. The symmetry, moreover, allows for a simple derivation of a recent exact fluctuation theorem valid at all times. Including a time dependent work protocol we also pres…
Through an exact analysis using quantum Langevin dynamics, we demonstrate the crossover from ballistic to diffusive thermal transport in a harmonic chain with each site connected to Ohmic heat reservoirs. The temperatures of the two heat baths at the boundaries are specified from before whereas the temperatures of the interior heat reservoirs are determined self-consistently by demanding that in the steady state, on average, there is no heat current between any such (self-consistent) reservoir and the harmonic chain. Essence of our study is that the effective mean free path separating the ball…
We consider thermal transport between two reservoirs coupled by a quantum Ising chain as a model for non-equilibrium physics induced in quantum-critical many-body systems. By deriving rate equations based on exact expressions for the quasiparticle pairs generated during the transport, we observe signatures of the underlying quantum phase transition in the steady-state energy current already at finite reservoir temperatures.
We consider open quantum systems weakly coupled to a heat reservoir and driven by arbitrary time-dependent parameters. We derive exact microscopic expressions for the nonequilibrium entropy production and entropy production rate, valid arbitrarily far from equilibrium. By using the two-point energy measurement statistics for system and reservoir, we further obtain a quantum generalization of the integrated fluctuation theorem put forward by Seifert [PRL 95, 040602 (2005)].
We study the thermalization of a small $XX$ chain coupled to long, gapped $XXZ$ leads at either side by observing the relaxation dynamics of the whole system. Using extensive tensor network simulations, we show that such systems, although not integrable, appear to show either extremely slow thermalization or even lack thereof since the two can not be distinguished within the accuracy of our numerics. We show that the persistent oscillations observed in the spin current in the middle of the $XX$ chain are related to eigenstates of the entire system located within the gap of the boundary chains.…
We consider a finite one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with four types of particles, $\{1,0,\bar{1},*\}$, in contact with reservoirs. Particles of species $0$ can neither enter nor exit the lattice, and those of species $*$ are constrained to lie at the first and last site. Particles of species $1$ enter from the left reservoir into either the first or second site, move rightwards, and leave from either the last or penultimate site. Conversely, particles of species $\bar{1}$ enter from the right reservoir into either the last or penultimate site, move leftward…
We introduce a multi-species generalization of the symmetric simple exclusion process with open boundaries. This model possesses the property of being integrable and appears as physically relevant because the boundary conditions can be interpreted as the interaction with particles reservoirs with fixed densities of each species. The system is driven out-of-equilibrium by these reservoirs. The steady state is analytically computed in a matrix product form. This algebraic structure allows us to obtain exact expressions for the mean particle currents and for the one and two-point correlation func…
An exact expression for the finite frequency response of open classical systems coupled to reservoirs is obtained. The result is valid for any conserved current. No assumption is made about the reservoirs apart from thermodynamic equilibrium. At non-zero frequencies, the expression involves correlation functions of boundary currents and cannot be put in the standard Green-Kubo form involving currents inside the system.
We demonstrate that persistent currents can be induced in a quantum system in contact with a structured reservoir, without the need of any applied gauge field. The working principle of the mechanism leading to their presence is based on the extension to the many-body scenario of non-reciprocal Lindblad dynamics, recently put forward by Metelmann and Clerk in Phys. Rev. X 5, 021025 (2015): Non-reciprocity can be generated by suitably balancing coherent interactions with their corresponding dissipative version, induced by the coupling to a common structured environment, such to make total intera…
We study the steady state of a finite XX chain coupled at its boundaries to quantum reservoirs made of free spins that interact one after the other with the chain. The two-point correlations are calculated exactly and it is shown that the steady state is completely characterized by the magnetization profile and the associated current. Except at the boundary sites, the magnetization is given by the average of the reservoirs' magnetizations. The steady state current, proportional to the difference in the reservoirs' magnetizations, shows a non-monotonous behavior with respect to the system-reser…
We study anomalous transport in a one-dimensional system with two conserved quantities in presence of thermal baths. In this system we derive exact expressions of the temperature profile and the two point correlations in steady state as well as in the non-stationary state where the later describes the relaxation to the steady state. In contrast to the Fourier heat equation in the diffusive case, here we show that the evolution of the temperature profile is governed by a non-local anomalous heat equation. We provide numerical verifications of our results.
A Brownian pump of particles powered by a stochastic flashing ratchet mechanism is studied. The pumping device is embedded in a finite region and bounded by particle reservoirs. In the steady state, we exactly calculate the spatial density profile, the concentration ratio between both reservoirs and the particle flux. A simple numerical scheme is presented allowing for the consistent evaluation of all such observable quantities.
We investigate the transport properties of an anharmonic oscillator, modeled by a single-site Bose-Hubbard model, coupled to two different thermal baths using the numerically exact thermofield based chain-mapping matrix product states (TCMPS) approach. We compare the effectiveness of TCMPS to probe the nonequilibrium dynamics of strongly interacting system irrespective of the system-bath coupling against the global master equation approach in Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad form. We discuss the effect of on-site interactions, temperature bias as well as the system-bath couplings on the s…
