The recognition of human actions and the determination of human attributes are two tasks that call for fine-grained classification. Indeed, often rather small and inconspicuous objects and features have to be detected to tell their classes apart. In order to deal with this challenge, we propose a novel convolutional neural network that mines mid-level image patches that are sufficiently dedicated to resolve the corresponding subtleties. In particular, we train a newly de- signed CNN (DeepPattern) that learns discriminative patch groups. There are two innovative aspects to this. On the one hand we pay attention to contextual information in an origi- nal fashion. On the other hand, we let an iteration of feature learning and patch clustering purify the set of dedicated patches that we use. We validate our method for action clas- sification on two challenging datasets: PASCAL VOC 2012 Action and Stanford 40 Actions, and for attribute recogni- tion we use the Berkeley Attributes of People dataset. Our discriminative mid-level mining CNN obtains state-of-the- art results on these datasets, without a need for annotations about parts and poses.
Predicting facial attributes from faces in the wild is very challenging due to pose and lighting variations in the real world. The key to this problem is to build proper feature representations to cope with these unfavourable conditions. Given the success of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) in image classification, the high-level CNN feature, as an intuitive and reasonable choice, has been widely utilized for this problem. In this paper, however, we consider the mid-level CNN features as an alternative to the high-level ones for attribute prediction. This is based on the observation that fac…
Discriminative feature representation of person image is important for person re-identification (Re-ID) task. Recently, attributes have been demonstrated beneficially in guiding for learning more discriminative feature representations for Re-ID. As attributes normally co-occur in person images, it is desirable to model the attribute dependencies to improve the attribute prediction and thus Re-ID results. In this paper, we propose to model these attribute dependencies via a novel attribute knowledge graph (AttKG), and propose a novel Attribute Knowledge Graph Convolutional Network (AttKGCN) to …

In this paper, we proposed a novel Probabilistic Attribute Tree-CNN (PAT-CNN) to explicitly deal with the large intra-class variations caused by identity-related attributes, e.g., age, race, and gender. Specifically, a novel PAT module with an associated PAT loss was proposed to learn features in a hierarchical tree structure organized according to attributes, where the final features are less affected by the attributes. Then, expression-related features are extracted from leaf nodes. Samples are probabilistically assigned to tree nodes at different levels such that expression-related features…

Most existing person re-identification (Re-ID) approaches follow a supervised learning framework, in which a large number of labelled matching pairs are required for training. Such a setting severely limits their scalability in real-world applications where no labelled samples are available during the training phase. To overcome this limitation, we develop a novel unsupervised Multi-task Mid-level Feature Alignment (MMFA) network for the unsupervised cross-dataset person re-identification task. Under the assumption that the source and target datasets share the same set of mid-level semantic at…

In this paper, we propose a novel two-branch stripe-based and attribute-aware deep convolutional neural network (SAN) to learn the efficient feature embedding for vehicle Re-ID task. Person attributes are often exploited as mid-level human semantic information to help promote the performance of person re-identification task. In this paper, unlike most existing methods simply taking attribute learning as a classification problem, we perform it in a different way with the motivation that attributes are related to specific local regions, which refers to the perceptual ability of attributes. We utilize the process of attribute detection to generate corresponding attribute-part detectors, whose invariance to many influences like poses and camera views can be guaranteed. With de…

Visual Recognition is one of the fundamental challenges in AI, where the goal is to understand the semantics of visual data. Employing mid-level representation, in particular, shifted the paradigm in visual recognition. The mid-level image/video representation involves discovering and training a set of mid-level visual patterns (e.g., parts and attributes) and represent a given image/video utilizing them. The mid-level patterns can be extracted from images and videos using the motion and appearance information of visual phenomenas. This thesis targets employing mid-level representations for di…

Specifically, we use a shared CNN architecture that jointly predicts facial attributes and recognize face images simultaneously via a shared learning parameters,…
Person Re-Identification (re-id) is a challenging task in computer vision, especially when there are limited training data from multiple camera views. In this paper, we pro- pose a deep learning based person re-identification method by transferring knowledge of mid-level attribute features and high-level classification features. Building on the idea that identity classification, attribute recognition and re- identification share the same mid-level semantic representations, they can be trained sequentially by fine-tuning one based on another. In our framework, we train identity classification a…
This paper focuses on improving face recognition performance with a new signature combining implicit facial features with explicit soft facial attributes. This signature has two components: the existing patch-based features and the soft facial attributes. A deep convolutional neural network adapted from state-of-the-art networks is used to learn the soft facial attributes. Then, a signature matcher is introduced that merges the contributions of both patch-based features and the facial attributes. In this matcher, the matching scores computed from patch-based features and the facial attributes …
Despite recent advances in multi-scale deep representations, their limitations are attributed to expensive parameters and weak fusion modules. Hence, we propose an efficient approach to fuse multi-scale deep representations, called convolutional fusion networks (CFN). Owing to using 1$\times$1 convolution and global average pooling, CFN can efficiently generate the side branches while adding few parameters. In addition, we present a locally-connected fusion module, which can learn adaptive weights for the side branches and form a discriminatively fused feature. CFN models trained on the CIFAR …

Predicting attributes from face images in the wild is a challenging computer vision problem. To automatically describe face attributes from face containing images, traditionally one needs to cascade three technical blocks --- face localization, facial descriptor construction, and attribute classification --- in a pipeline. As a typical classification problem, face attribute prediction has been addressed using deep learning. Current state-of-the-art performance was achieved by using two cascaded Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), which were specifically trained to learn face localization and…

The visual appearance of a person is easily affected by many factors like pose variations, viewpoint changes and camera parameter differences. This makes person Re-Identification (ReID) among multiple cameras a very challenging task. This work is motivated to learn mid-level human attributes which are robust to such visual appearance variations. And we propose a semi-supervised attribute learning framework which progressively boosts the accuracy of attributes only using a limited number of labeled data. Specifically, this framework involves a three-stage training. A deep Convolutional Neural N…
In this paper, we present a novel approach to automatic 3D Facial Expression Recognition (FER) based on deep representation of facial 3D geometric and 2D photometric attributes. A 3D face is firstly represented by its geometric and photometric attributes, including the geometry map, normal maps, normalized curvature map and texture map. These maps are then fed into a pre-trained deep convolutional neural network to generate the deep representation. Then the facial expression prediction is simplyachieved by training linear SVMs over the deep representation for different maps and fusing these SV…

This paper focuses on the problem of generating human face pictures from specific attributes. The existing CNN-based face generation models, however, either ignore the identity of the generated face or fail to preserve the identity of the reference face image. Here we address this problem from the view of optimization, and suggest an optimization model to generate human face with the given attributes while keeping the identity of the reference image. The attributes can be obtained from the attribute-guided image or by tuning the attribute features of the reference image. With the deep convolut…
Objects of different classes can be described using a limited number of attributes such as color, shape, pattern, and texture. Learning to detect object attributes instead of only detecting objects can be helpful in dealing with a priori unknown objects. With this inspiration, a deep convolutional neural network for low-level object attribute classification, called the Deep Attribute Network (DAN), is proposed. Since object features are implicitly learned by object recognition networks, one such existing network is modified and fine-tuned for developing DAN. The performance of DAN is evaluated…

In this paper, the integration of visual attributes (including detection, encoding and classification) into multi-stream 3D CNN is proposed for action recognition in trimme…

Face multi-attribute prediction benefits substantially from multi-task learning (MTL), which learns multiple face attributes simultaneously to achieve shared or mutually related representations of different attributes. The most widely used MTL convolutional neural network is heuristically or empirically designed by sharing all of the convolutional layers and splitting at the fully connected layers for task-specific losses. However, it is improper to view all low and mid-level features for different attributes as being the same, especially when these attributes are only loosely related. In this…

We compared the proposed method with a competitive deep Convolutional Neural Network baseline. These effects have been modeled with divisive normalization approaches, including flexible models, where spatial normalization is recruited only to the degree r…
