In this paper, we find asymptotic formula for the following sum with explicit error term: \[M_{x}(g_{1}, g_{2}, g_3)=\frac{1}{x}\sum_{n\le x}g_{1}(F_1(n))g_{2}(F_2(n))g_{3} (F_3(n)),\] where $F_1(x), F_2(x)$ and $F_3(x)$ are polynomials with integer coefficients and $g_1,g_2,g_3$ are multilpicative functions with modulus less than or equal to $1.$
Moreover, under some assumption on $g_1,g_2,$ we prove that as $x\rightarrow \infty,$ \[\frac{1}{x}\sum\limits_{n\le x}g_1(n+3)g_2(n+2)μ(n+1)=o(1)\] and assuming $2$-point Chowla type conjecture we show that as $x\rightarrow \infty,$ \[\frac{1}{x}\sum\limits_{n\le x}g_1(n+3)μ(n+2)μ(n+1)=o(1).\]
In this paper, we study the average size of the product of a number and its multiplicative inverse modulo a prime p. This turns out to be related to moments of L-functions and leads to a curious asymptotic formula for a certain triple exponential sum.
We show how the multiplicative structure on Pythagorean triples defined by Beauregard--Suryanarayan arises from automorphisms of the hyperbolic plane, and how the structure theorem of this product follow naturally from this connection. We also show how the natural involution on Pythagorean triples is related to Pell's equation with the parameter 2, and prove a generalization of this phenomenon.
We give an asymptotic formula for correlations \[ \sum_{n\le x}f_1(P_1(n))f_2(P_2(n))\cdot \dots \cdot f_m(P_m(n))\] where $f\dots,f_m$ are bounded "pretentious" multiplicative functions, under certain natural hypotheses. We then deduce several desirable consequences:\ First, we characterize all multiplicative functions $f:\mathbb{N}\to\{-1,+1\}$ with bounded partial sums. This answers a question of Erdős from $1957$ in the form conjectured by Tao. Second, we show that if the average of the first divided difference of multiplicative function is zero, then either $f(n)=n^s$ for $\operatorname{R…
We study logarithmically averaged binary correlations of bounded multiplicative functions $g_1$ and $g_2$. A breakthrough on these correlations was made by Tao, who showed that the correlation average is negligibly small whenever $g_1$ or $g_2$ does not pretend to be any twisted Dirichlet character, in the sense of the pretentious distance for multiplicative functions. We consider a wider class of real-valued multiplicative functions $g_j$, namely those that are uniformly distributed in arithmetic progressions to fixed moduli. Under this assumption, we obtain a discorrelation estimate, showing…
Let $λ_ϕ(n)$ be the Fourier coefficients of a Hecke holomorphic or Hecke--Maass cusp form on ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$, and $f$ be any multiplicative function that satisfies two mild hypotheses. We establish a non-trivial upper bound for the correlation $\sum_{n \leq X}f(n)λ_ϕ(n+h)$ uniformly in $0<|h|\ll X$. As applications, we consider some special cases, including $λ_π(n), \,μ(n)λ_π(n)$ and any divisor-bounded multiplicative function. Here $λ_π(n)$ denotes the $n$-th Dirichlet coefficient of $\text{GL}_m$ automorphic $L$-function $L(s,π)$ for an automorphic irreducible cuspidal representation…
We obtain the triple correlations for a truncated divisor sum related to primes. We also obtain the mixed correlations for this divisor sum when it is summed over the primes, and give some applications to primes in short intervals.
In this paper, we study sums of shifted products $\sum\limits_{n \leq x} F(n) G(n-h)$ for any $|h| \leq x/2$ and arithmetic functions $F=f*1$ and $G=g*1$, with $f$ and $g$ small. We obtain asymptotic formula for different orders of magnitude of $f$ and $g$. We also provide asymptotic formula for sums of the type $\sum\limits_{n \leq x} μ^2(n) G(n-h)$, where $G=g*1$ and $g$ is small. For small order of magnitudes of $f$ and $g$, we improve the error terms and make them independent of $h$.
We develop an approach to study character sums, weighted by a multiplicative function $f:\mathbb{F}_q[t]\to S^1$, of the form \begin{equation} \sum_{G\in \mathcal{M}_N}f(G)χ(G)ξ(G), \end{equation} where $χ$ is a Dirichlet character and $ξ$ is a short interval character over $\mathbb{F}_q[t].$ We then deduce versions of the Matomäki-Radziwill theorem and Tao's two-point logarithmic Elliott conjecture over function fields $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$, where $q$ is fixed. The former of these improves on work of Gorodetsky, and the latter extends the work of Sawin-Shusterman on correlations of the Möbius fun…
We study sets of recurrence, in both measurable and topological settings, for actions of $(\mathbb{N},\times)$ and $(\mathbb{Q}^{>0},\times)$. In particular, we show that autocorrelation sequences of positive functions arising from multiplicative systems have positive additive averages. We also give criteria for when sets of the form $\{(an+b)^{\ell}/(cn+d)^{\ell}: n \in \mathbb{N}\}$ are sets of multiplicative recurrence, and consequently we recover two recent results in number theory regarding completely multiplicative functions and the Omega function.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of higher order correlations $$ \mathbb{E}_{n \leq X/d} g_1(n+ah_1) \cdots g_k(n+ah_k)$$ as a function of the parameters $a$ and $d$, where $g_1,\dots,g_k$ are bounded multiplicative functions, $h_1,\dots,h_k$ are integer shifts, and $X$ is large. Our main structural result asserts, roughly speaking, that such correlations asymptotically vanish for almost all $X$ if $g_1 \cdots g_k$ does not (weakly) pretend to be a twisted Dirichlet character $n \mapsto χ(n)n^{it}$, and behave asymptotically like a multiple of $d^{-it} χ(a)$ otherwise. This extends our earlie…
We study correlations of multiplicative functions taken along deterministic sequences and sequences that satisfy certain linear independence assumptions. The results obtained extend recent results of Tao and Teräväinen and results of the author. Our approach is to use tools from ergodic theory in order to effectively exploit feedback from analytic number theory. The results on deterministic sequences crucially use structural properties of measure preserving systems associated with bounded multiplicative functions that were recently obtained by the author and Host. The results on independent se…
We treat an unbalanced shifted convolution sum of Fourier coefficients of cusp forms. As a consequence, we obtain an upper bound for correlation of three Hecke eigenvalues of holomorphic cusp forms $\sum_{H\leq h\leq 2H}W\big(\frac{h}{H}\big)\sum_{X\leq n\leq 2X}λ_{1}(n-h)λ_{2}(n)λ_{3}(n+h)$, which is nontrivial provided that $H\geq X^{2/3+\varepsilon}$. The result can be viewed as a cuspidal analogue of a recent result of Blomer on triple correlations of divisor functions.
In this short note, we treat an unbalanced shifted convolution sum of Fourier coefficients of cusp forms by a rather simple argument. Our result improves previous results established by more advanced approaches.
In this article we study the asymptotic behaviour of the correlation functions over polynomial ring $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$. Let $\mathcal{M}_{n, q}$ and $\mathcal{P}_{n, q}$ be the set of all monic polynomials and monic irreducible polynomials of degree $n$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ respectively. For multiplicative functions $ψ_1$ and $ψ_2$ on $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$, we obtain asymptotic formula for the following correlation functions for a fixed $q$ and $n\to \infty$ \begin{align*} &S_{2}(n, q):=\displaystyle\sum_{f\in \mathcal{M}_{n, q}}ψ_1(f+h_1) ψ_2(f+h_2), \\ &R_2(n, q):=\displaystyle\sum_{P\in \mathcal{…
Let $g_0,\dots,g_k: {\bf N} \to {\bf D}$ be $1$-bounded multiplicative functions, and let $h_0,\dots,h_k \in {\bf Z}$ be shifts. We consider correlation sequences $f: {\bf N} \to {\bf Z}$ of the form $$ f(a):= \widetilde{\lim}_{m \to \infty} \frac{1}{\log ω_m} \sum_{x_m/ω_m \leq n \leq x_m} \frac{g_0(n+ah_0) \dots g_k(n+ah_k)}{n} $$ where $1 \leq ω_m \leq x_m$ are numbers going to infinity as $m \to \infty$, and $\widetilde{\lim}$ is a generalised limit functional extending the usual limit functional. We show a structural theorem for these sequences, namely that these sequences $f$ are the uni…
For fixed $α\in [0,1]$, consider the set $S_{α,N}$ of dilated squares $α, 4α, 9α, \dots, N^2α\, $ modulo $1$. Rudnick and Sarnak conjectured that for Lebesgue almost all such $α$ the gap-distribution of $S_{α,N}$ is consistent with the Poisson model (in the limit as $N$ tends to infinity). In this paper we prove a new estimate for the triple correlations associated to this problem, establishing an asymptotic expression for the third moment of the number of elements of $S_{α,N}$ in a random interval of length $L/N$, provided that $L > N^{1/4+\varepsilon}$. The threshold of $1/4$ is substantiall…
We establish new Bombieri-Vinogradov type estimates for a wide class of multiplicative arithmetic functions and derive several applications, including: a new proof of a recent estimate by Drappeau and Topacogullari for arithmetical correlations; a theorem of Erd{\H o}s-Wintner type with support equal to the level set of an additive function at shifted argument; and a law of iterated logarithm for the distribution of prime factors of integers weighted by $τ(n-1)$ where $τ$ denotes the divisor function.
We establish several results concerning the expected general phenomenon that, given a multiplicative function $f:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{C}$, the values of $f(n)$ and $f(n+a)$ are "generally" independent unless $f$ is of a "special" form. First, we classify all bounded completely multiplicative functions having uniformly large gaps between its consecutive values. This implies the solution of the following folklore conjecture: for any completely multiplicative function $f:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{T}$ we have $$\liminf_{n\to\infty}|f(n+1)-f(n)|=0.$$ Second, we settle an old conjecture due to N.G. Chuda…
We evaluate the triple correlation of eigenvalues of the Laplacian on generic flat tori in an averaged sense. As two consequence we show that (a) the limit inferior (resp. limit superior) of the triple correlation is almost surely at most (resp. at least) Poissonian, and that (b) almost all flat tori contain infinitely many gaps in their spectrum that are at least 2.006 times longer than the average gap. The significance of the constant 2.006 lies in the fact that there exist sequences with Poissonian pair correlation and with consecutive spacings bounded uniformly from above by 2, as we also …
We use the conjecture of Conrey, Farmer and Zirnbauer for averages of ratios of the Riemann zeta function to calculate all the lower order terms of the triple correlation function of the Riemann zeros. A previous approach was suggested in 1996 by Bogomolny and Keating taking inspiration from semi-classical methods. At that point they did not write out the answer explicitly, so we do that here, illustrating that by our method all the lower order terms down to the constant can be calculated rigourously if one assumes the ratios conjecture of Conrey, Farmer and Zirnbauer. Bogomolny and Keating re…
We show that the cubic nonconventional ergodic averages of any order with a bounded multiplicative function weight converge almost surely to zero provided that the multiplicative function satisfies a strong Daboussi-Delange condition. We further obtain that the Cesàro mean of the self-correlations and some moving average of the self-correlations of such multiplicative functions converge to zero. Our proof gives, for any $N \geq 2$, $$\frac1{N}\sum_{m=1}^{N}\Big|\frac1{N}\sum_{n=1}^{N} \bnu(n) \bnu(n+m)\Big| \leq \frac{C}{\log(N)^ε},$$ and $$\frac1{N^2}\sum_{n,p=1}^{N}\Big|\frac1{N}\sum_{m=1}^{…
