This letter explains a new, highly sensitive method for the detection of neutrons, which uses the T$_{1/2}=845$ ns delay in the decay of $^{128}$I at the 137.8 keV energy level, resulting from the capture of thermal neutrons by iodine nuclei in NaI and CsI scintillation detectors. The use of delayed coincidence techniques with a several $μ{\rm s}$ time frame for delayed events allows for the highly effective discrimination of neutron events from any existing background signals. A comparison of ambient neutron measurements between those identified through the suggested method from a cylindrical, ø$\, 63 \, {\rm mm}\times 63\, {\rm mm}$ NaI(Tl) scintillator and those from a low-background proportional $^3$He counter experimentally demonstrates the efficacy of this neutron detection method. For an isotropic, $4π$, thermal neutron flux of 1 ${\rm n}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$, the absolute sensitivity of the NaI detector was found to be $6.5 \pm 1\, {\rm counts}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$ with a background of $0.8\, {\rm events}\, {\rm day}^{-1}$ and a delay time frame of $Δ{\rm t}=1\, μ$s. The proposed method can provide low-background experiments, using NaI or CsI, with measurements of the rate and stability of incoming neutron flux to a greater accuracy than 10$^{-8}\, {\rm n}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$.
A model is proposed to address issues on the precise background evaluation due to the complex data structure defined by the delayed coincidence method, which is widely used in reactor electron-antineutrino oscillation experiments. In this model, the effects from the muon veto, uncorrelated random background, coincident signal and background are all studied with the analytical solutions, simplifying the estimation of the systematic uncertainties of signal efficiency and accidental background rate determined by the unstable single rate. The result of calculation is validated numerically with a n…
This work explains a delayed-coincidence method to perform MeV-scale neutrino spectroscopy with electron-neutrino capture on gallium. An electron-neutrino possessing energy greater than 407.6 keV can be captured on gallium and produce a daughter germanium nucleus at its first excited state with a mean lifetime of 114 ns. The released electron and gammas before the first excited state of Ge can generate a prompt signal representing the solar neutrino energy and the gamma from the deexcitation of the first excited state, 175 keV, can give a delayed signal. The cross-section of this electron-neut…
In solid-state dark matter detectors, energy accumulation due to ionizing radiation should produce delayed low-energy background similar to the background produced by energy deposited by mechanical stress. The tunneling two-level systems model for glasses is missing interactions between excitation; in contrast, interactions lead to emerging phenomena in Prigogine consideration of systems with energy flow. We observed energy accumulation and delayed release as delayed luminescence in sodium iodine and delayed luminescence suppression by exposure to red light. More studies of fast and delayed lu…
Localization and modeling of radioactive contaminations is a challenge that ultra-low background experiments are constantly facing. These are fundamental steps both to extract scientific results and to further reduce the background of the detectors. Here we present an innovative technique based on the analysis of $α-α$ delayed coincidences in $^{232}$Th and $^{238}$U decay chains, developed to investigate the contaminations of the ZnSe crystals in the CUPID-0 experiment. This method allows to disentangle surface and bulk contaminations of the detectors relying on the different probability to t…
In the framework of rare event searches, the identification of radioactive contaminants in ultra-pure samples is a challenging task, because the signal is often at the same level of the instrumental background. This is a rather common situation for $α$-spectrometers and other detectors used for low-activity measurements. In order to obtain the target sensitivity without extending the data taking live-time, analysis strategies that highlight the presence of the signal sought should be developed. In this paper, we show how to improve the contaminant tagging capability relying on the time-correla…

This study presents a new concept of segmented antineutrino detector based on hexagonal plastic scintillator bars for detecting antineutrinos from a nuclear reactor core. The choice of hexagonal scintillator bars is original and provides compactness. The proposed detector detects antineutrinos via inverse beta decay (IBD) with the prompt-delayed double coincidence. Owing to its segmented structure, the background, which satisfies the delayed coincidence condition can be eliminated by applying proper event selection cuts. In this manner, the main focus is to determine proper selection criteria …
Many choices are available in order to evaluate large radioactive decay networks. %multi-particle decay data. There are many parameters that influence the calculated $β$-decay delayed single and multi-neutron emission branching fractions. We describe assumptions about the decay model, background, and other parameters and their influence on $β$-decay delayed multi-neutron emission analysis. An analysis technique, the ORNL BRIKEN analysis procedure, for determining $β$-delayed multi-neutron branching ratios in $β$-neutron precursors produced by means of heavy-ion fragmentation is presented. The …
We investigate the prospects for real-time detection of solar neutrinos via the charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering process in liquid xenon time projection chambers. We use a nuclear shell model, benchmarked with experimental data, to calculate the cross sections for populating specific excited states of the caesium nuclei produced by neutrino capture on $^{131}$Xe and $^{136}$Xe. The shell model is further used to compute the decay schemes of the low-lying $1^{+}$ excited states of $^{136}$Cs, for which there is sparse experimental data. We explore the possibility of tagging the chara…
The Gas Amplifier Detector with Germanium Tagging (GADGET) is a new detection system devoted to the measurement of weak, low-energy $β$-delayed proton decays relevant for nuclear astrophysics studies. It is comprised of a new gaseous Proton Detector equipped with a Micromegas readout for charged particle detection, surrounded by the existing Segmented Germanium Array (SeGA) for the high-resolution detection of the prompt $γ$-rays. In this work we describe in detail for the first time the design, construction, and operation of the GADGET system, including performance of the Proton Detector. We …
The proposed introduction of a soluble gadolinium (Gd) compound into water Cherenkov detectors can result in a high efficiency for the detection of free neutrons capturing on the Gd. The delayed 8 MeV gamma cascades produced by these captures, in coincidence with a prompt positron signal, serve to uniquely identify electron antineutrinos interacting via inverse beta decay. Such coincidence detection can reduce backgrounds, allowing a large Gd-enhanced water Cherenkov detector to make the first observation of supernova relic neutrinos and high precision measurements of Japan's reactor antineutr…
Radionuclide Identification Devices (RIDs) or Backpack Radiation Detection Systems (BRDs) are often equipped with NaI(Tl) detectors. We demonstrate that such instruments could be provided with reasonable thermal- and fast-neutron sensitivity by means of an improved and sophisticated processing of the digitized detector signals: Fast neutrons produce nuclear recoils in the scintillation crystal. Corresponding signals are detectible and can be distinguished from that of electronic interactions by pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) techniques as used in experiments searching for weakly interacting …
In-situ production of long-lived isotopes by cosmic muon interactions may generate a non-negligible background for deep underground rare event searches. Previous Monte Carlo studies for the GERDA experiment at LNGS identified the delayed decays of $^{77}$Ge and its metastable state $^{77m}$Ge as dominant cosmogenic background in the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{76}$Ge. This might limit the sensitivity of next generation experiments aiming for increased $^{76}$Ge mass at background-free conditions and thereby define a minimum depth requirement. A re-evaluation of the $^{77(m)…
Rare event physics demands very detailed background control, high-performance detectors, and custom analysis strategies. Cryogenic calorimeters combine all these ingredients very effectively, representing a promising tool for next-generation experiments. CUPID-0 is one of the most advanced examples of such a technique, having demonstrated its potential with several results obtained with limited exposure. In this paper, we present a further application. Exploiting the analysis of delayed coincidence, we can identify the signals caused by the $^{220}$Rn-$^{216}$Po decay sequence on an event-by-e…

A technique to measure low intensity fast neutron flux has been developed. The design, calibrations, procedure for data analysis and interpretation of the results are discussed in detail. The technique has been applied to measure the neutron background from rock at the Boulby Underground Laboratory, a site used for dark matter and other experiments, requiring shielding from cosmic ray muons. The experiment was performed using a liquid scintillation detector. A 6.1 litre volume stainless steel cell was filled with an in-house made liquid scintillator loaded with Gd to enhance neutron capture. A…
The STEREO experiment measures the electron antineutrino spectrum emitted in a research reactor using the inverse beta decay reaction on H nuclei in a gadolinium loaded liquid scintillator. The detection is based on a signal coincidence of a prompt positron and a delayed neutron capture event. The simulated response of the neutron capture on gadolinium is crucial for the comparison with data, in particular in the case of the detection efficiency. Among all stable isotopes, $^{155}$Gd and $^{157}$Gd have the highest cross sections for thermal neutron capture. The excited nuclei after the neutro…
The SNO+ experiment collected data as a low-threshold water Cherenkov detector from September 2017 to July 2019. Measurements of the 2.2-MeV $γ$ produced by neutron capture on hydrogen have been made using an Am-Be calibration source, for which a large fraction of emitted neutrons are produced simultaneously with a 4.4-MeV $γ$. Analysis of the delayed coincidence between the 4.4-MeV $γ$ and the 2.2-MeV capture $γ$ revealed a neutron detection efficiency that is centered around 50% and varies at the level of 1% across the inner region of the detector, which to our knowledge is the highest effic…
The Double Chooz experiment measures the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ by detecting reactor $\barν_e$ via inverse beta decay. The positron-neutron space and time coincidence allows for a sizable background rejection, nonetheless liquid scintillator detectors would profit from a positron/electron discrimination, if feasible in large detector, to suppress the remaining background. Standard particle identification, based on particle dependent time profile of photon emission in liquid scintillator, can not be used given the identical mass of the two particles. However, the positron annihilation i…
