We have investigated the magnetoresistance (MR) and Hall resistivity properties of the single crystals of tantalum sulfide, Ta3S2, which was recently predicted to be a new type II Weyl semimetal. Large MR (up to ~8000% at 2 K and 16 T), field-induced metal-insulator-like transition and nonlinear Hall resistivity are observed at low temperatures. The large MR shows a strong dependence on the field orientation, leading to a giant anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) effect. For the field applied along the b-axis (B//b), MR exhibits quadratic field dependence at low fields and tends towards saturation at high fields; while for B//a, MR presents quadratic field dependence at low fields and becomes linear at high fields without any trend towards saturation. The analysis of the Hall resistivity data indicates the coexistence of a large number of electrons with low mobility and a small number of holes with high mobility. Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation analysis reveals three fundamental frequencies originated from the three-dimensional (3D) Fermi surface (FS) pockets. We find that the semi-classical multiband model is sufficient to account for the experimentally observed MR in Ta3S2.
Topological nodal-line semimetals support protected band crossings which form nodal lines or nodal loops between the valence and conduction bands and exhibit novel transport phenomena. Here we address the topological state of the nodal-line semimetal candidate material, CaCdSn, and report magnetotransport properties of its single crystals grown by the self-flux method. Our first-principles calculations show that the electronic structure of CaCdSn harbors a single nodal loop around the $Γ$ point in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects. The nodal crossings in CaCdSn are found to lie …
Thin films of the ferromagnet Fe$_2$Ge were grown via molecular beam epitaxy, and their electrical and magneto-transport properties measured for the first time. X-ray diffraction and vibrating sample magnetometry measurements confirmed the crystalline ferromagnetic Fe$_2$Ge phase. The observed high temperature maximum in the longitudinal resistivity, as well as the observed suppression of electron-magnon scattering at low temperatures, point to the presence of strong spin polarization in this material. Measurements of the Hall resistivity, $ρ_{xy}$, show contributions from both the ordinary Ha…
Weyl semimetals (WSM) exhibit chiral anomaly in their magnetotransport due to broken conservation laws. Here, we analyze the magnetotransport of WSM in the presence of the time-reversal symmetry-breaking tilt parameter. The analytical expression for the magnetoconductivity is derived in the small tilt limit using the semiclassical Boltzmann equation. We predict a planar Hall current which flows transverse to the electric field and in the plane containing magnetic and electric fields and scales linearly with the tilt parameter. A tilt-induced transverse conductivity is also present in the case …

Study of magnetotransport properties of ScPtBi revealed simultaneously: a negative contribution to the longitudinal magnetoresistance, the planar Hall effect, and distinct angular narrowing of the longitudinal magnetoresistance { three hallmarks of chiral magnetic anomaly (pumping of axial charge between Weyl nodes), a distinct property of topological semimetals. Electronic structure calculations show that structural defects, such as antisites and vacancies, bring substantial density of states at the Fermi level of ScPtBi, indicating that it is a semimetal, not a zero-gap semiconductor, as pre…
Adler-Bell-Jackiw chiral anomaly is a representative feature arising from the topological nature in topological semimetal. We report the first experimental observation of giant planar Hall effect in type-II Weyl semimetal WTe2. Our comprehensive analyes of the experimental data demonstrate that the detected planar Hall effect is originated from the chiral anomaly of Weyl fermions. Unlike the somewhat elusive negative magnetoresistance, the planar Hall effect is robust and easy to be detected in type-II Weyl semimetal. This work reveals that the planar Hall effect is an effective transport prob…
We report the first experimental results of the magnetoresistance, Hall effect, and quantum Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations on single crystals of ZrTe, which was recently predicted to be a new type of topological semimetal hosting both triply degenerate crossing points and Weyl fermion state. The analysis of Hall effect and quantum oscillations indicate that ZrTe is a multiband system with low carrier density, high carrier mobility, small cross-sectional area of Fermi surface, and light cyclotron effective mass, as observed in many topological semimetals. Meanwhile, the angular dependence of th…
Weyl semimetals are emerging to become a new class of quantum-material platform for various novel phenomena. Especially, the Weyl orbit made from surface Fermi arcs and bulk relativistic states is expected to play a key role in magnetotransport, leading even to a three-dimensional quantum Hall effect (QHE). It is experimentally and theoretically important although yet unclear whether it bears essentially the same phenomenon as the conventional two-dimensional QHE. We discover an unconventional fully three-dimensional anisotropy in the quantum transport under magnetic field. Strong suppression …

The Weyl semimetal requires the breaking of either the time-reversal symmetry (TRS) or the lattice inversion symmetry. When the TRS and inversion symmetry coexist, a pair of degenerate Weyl points may exist, leading to the related Dirac semimetal phase. In other words, a Dirac semimetallic state can be regarded as two copies of Weyl semimetal states. In this dissertation, we study tellurium based compounds like the Weyl semimetal candidate MoTe2 and the Dirac semimetal candidate PtTe2 within the transition metal dichalcogenides family.
Weyl semimetal (WSM) is a newly discovered quantum phase of matter that exhibits topologically protected states characterized by two separated Weyl points with linear dispersion in all directions. Here, via combining theoretical analysis and magneto-infrared spectroscopy of an archetypal Weyl semimetal, niobium phosphide, we demonstrate that the coupling between Weyl points can significantly modify the electronic structure of a WSM and provide a new twist to the protected states. These findings suggest that the coupled Weyl points should be considered as the basis for analysis of realistic WSM…
We report a combined experimental and theoretical study of the candidate type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2. Using laser-based angle-resolved photoemission we resolve multiple distinct Fermi arcs on the inequivalent top and bottom (001) surfaces. All surface states observed experimentally are reproduced by an electronic structure calculation for the experimental crystal structure that predicts a topological Weyl semimetal state with 8 type-II Weyl points. We further use systematic electronic structure calculations simulating different Weyl point arrangements to discuss the robustness of the identifi…
Recently, the Dirac and Weyl semimetals have attracted extensive attention in condensed matter physics due to both the fundamental interest and the potential application of a new generation of electronic devices. Here we review the exotic electrical transport phenomena in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. Section 1 is a brief introduction to the topological semimetals (TSMs). In Section 2 and Section 3, the intriguing transport phenomena in Dirac semimetals (DSMs) and Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are reviewed, respectively. The most widely studied Cd3As2 and the TaAs family are selected as representatives …
We report the magnetoresistance (MR), Hall effect, and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect studies of the single crystals of tungsten carbide, WC, which is predicted to be a new type of topological semimetal with triply degenerate nodes. With the magnetic field rotated in the plane perpendicular to the current, WC shows field induced metal to insulator like transition and large nonsaturating quadratic MR at low temperature. As the magnetic field parallel to the current, a pronounced negative longitudinal MR only can be observed when the current flows along the certain direction. Hall effect indic…
Topological insulators and topological semimetals are both new classes of quantum materials, which are characterized by surface states induced by the topology of the bulk band structure. Topological Dirac or Weyl semimetals show linear dispersion round nodes, termed the Dirac or Weyl points, as the three-dimensional analogue of graphene. We review the basic concepts and compare these topological states of matter from the materials perspective with a special focus on Weyl semimetals. The TaAs family is the ideal materials class to introduce the signatures of Weyl points in a pedagogical way, fr…
The interplay between light and matter attracts tremendous interest for exploring novel topological quantum states and their phase transitions. Here we show by first-principles calculations and the Floquet theorem that a carbon allotrope bct-C$_{16}$, a typical nodal-line semimetal, exhibits exotic photoinduced Floquet mixed-Weyl semimetallic features. Under the irradiation of a linearly polarized light, bct-C$_{16}$ undergos a topological phase transition from a Driac nodal-line semimetal to a Weyl semimetal with two pairs of tunable Weyl points. With increasing the light intensity, left-hand…
We report on the evolution of the average and depth-dependent magnetic order in thin film samples of biaxially stressed and electron-doped EuTiO$_3$ for samples across a doping range $<$0.1 to 7.8 $\times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$. Under an applied in-plane magnetic field, the G-type antiferromagnetic ground state undergoes a continuous spin-flop phase transition into in-plane, field-polarized ferromagnetism. The critical field for ferromagnetism slightly decreases with an increasing number of free carriers, yet the field evolution of the spin-flop transition is qualitatively similar across the dopin…
Internodal dynamics of quasiparticles in Weyl semimetals manifest themselves in hydrodynamic, transport and thermodynamic phenomena and are essential for potential valleytronic applications of these systems. In an external magnetic field, coherent quasiparticle tunnelling between the nodes modifies the quasiparticle dispersion and, in particular, opens gaps in the dispersion of quasiparticles at the zeroth Landau level. We study magnetotransport in a Weyl semimetal taking into account mechanisms of quasiparticle scattering both affected by such gaps and independent of them. We compute the long…
The results of experimental study of the magnetoresistivity, the Hall and Shubnikov-de Haas effects for the heterostructure with HgTe quantum well of 20.2 nm width are reported. The measurements were performed on the gated samples over the wide range of electron and hole densities including vicinity of a charge neutrality point. Analyzing the data we conclude that the energy spectrum is drastically different from that calculated in framework of $kP$-model. So, the hole effective mass is equal to approximately $0.2 m_0$ and practically independent of the quasimomentum ($k$) up to $k^2\gtrsim 0.…
We construct a tight-binding model realizing one pair of Weyl nodes and three distinct Weyl semimetals. In the type-I (type-II) Weyl semimetal, both nodes belong to type-I (type-II) Weyl nodes. In addition, there exists a novel type, dubbed "hybrid Weyl semimetal", in which one Weyl node is of type-I while the other is of type-II. For the hybrid Weyl semimetal, we further demonstrate the bulk Fermi surfaces and the topologically protected surface states, analyze the unique Landau level structure and quantum oscillation, and discuss the material realization.
We report the discovery of a time-reversal symmetric Weyl semimetal obtained by modifying a model Hamiltonian describing the electronic properties of conventional alkali metals. The artificially generated Weyl semimetal features four isolated Weyl nodes in its bulk band structure and displays characteristic surface Fermi arcs arising from topologically protected surface states. The Weyl semimetal occurs as an intermediate state between a conventional band insulator and a three-dimensional topological insulator. The generation of topological Weyl semimetals from conventional metals opens a new …
We report on a systematic study of Hall effect using high quality single crystals of type-II Weyl semimetal WTe2 with the applied magnetic field B//c. The residual resistivity ratio of 1330 and the large magnetoresistance of 1.5\times10^6 % in 9 T at 2 K, being in the highest class in the literature, attest to their high quality. Based on a simple two-band model, the densities (n_e and n_h) and mobilities (μ_e and μ_h) for electron and hole carriers have been uniquely determined combining both Hall- and electrical-resistivity data. The difference between ne and nh is ~1% at 2 K, indicating tha…
Three-dimensional (3D) topological Dirac semimetal is a new kind of material that has a linear energy dispersion in 3D momentum space and can be viewed as an analog of graphene. Extensive efforts have been devoted to the understanding of bulk materials, but yet it remains a challenge to explore the intriguing physics in low-dimensional Dirac semimetals. Here, we report on the synthesis of Cd3As2 nanowires and nanobelts and a systematic investigation of their magnetotransport properties. Temperature-dependent ambipolar behavior is evidently demonstrated, suggesting the presence of finite-size o…
A new type of Weyl semimetal state, in which the energy values of Weyl nodes are not the local extrema, has been theoretically proposed recently, namely type II Weyl semimetal. Distinguished from type I semimetal (e.g. TaAs), the Fermi surfaces in a type II Weyl semimetal consist of a pair of electron and hole pockets touching at the Weyl node. In addition, Weyl fermions in type II Weyl semimetals violate Lorentz invariance. Due to these qualitative differences distinct spectroscopy and magnetotransport properties are expected in type II Weyl semimetals. Here, we present the direct observation…
The Weyl semimetal is a new quantum state of topological semimetal, of which topological surface states -- the Fermi arcs exist. In this paper, the Fermi arcs in Weyl semimetals are classified into two classes -- class-1 and class-2. Based on a tight-binding model, the evolution and transport properties of class-1/2 Fermi arcs are studied via the tilting strength of the bulk Weyl cones. The (residual) anomalous Hall conductivity of topological surface states is a physical consequence of class-1 Fermi arc and thus class-1 Fermi arc becomes a nontrivial topological property for hybrid or type-II…
Weyl semimetals are a class of materials that can be regarded as three-dimensional analogs of graphene breaking time reversal or inversion symmetry. Electrons in a Weyl semimetal behave as Weyl fermions, which have many exotic properties, such as chiral anomaly and magnetic monopoles in the crystal momentum space. The surface state of a Weyl semimetal displays pairs of entangled Fermi arcs at two opposite surfaces. However, the existence of Weyl semimetals has not yet been proved experimentally. Here we report the experimental realization of a Weyl semimetal in TaAs by observing Fermi arcs for…
The quest for topological states in strongly correlated materials is challenging but essential from fundamental research and application perspectives. The magnetic Weyl semimetal (WSM) state in the chiral antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn emerges with strong electronic correlations, offering an intriguing arena for exploring the interplay between Weyl fermions and correlation physics. One prominent characteristic of the WSM state is the chiral anomaly, yet the potential effects of electronic correlations on the chiral anomaly remain unexplored. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the in-plane magn…
Non-Hermiticity in Weyl Hamiltonian leads to the realization of Weyl exceptional rings and flat bands inside the Weyl exceptional rings. Recently, the platform of non-Hermitian physics is extended to many-body or disordered systems where quasiparticles possess finite lifetime. Here, we clarify that the deviation from unitarity limit in a disordered Weyl semimetal leads to the generation of Weyl exceptional rings regardless of the detail of the scattering potential. In the case of topological Dirac semimetals, hybrid rings and flat bands without vorticity of complex-energy eigenvalues are reali…
Ideal Weyl semimetals with all Weyl nodes exactly at the Fermi level and no coexisting trivial Fermi surfaces in the bulk, similar to graphene, could feature deep physics such as exotic transport phenomena induced by the chiral anomaly. Here, we show that HgTe and half-Heusler compounds, under a broad range of in-plane compressive strain, could be materials in nature realizing ideal Weyl semimetals with four pairs of Weyl nodes and topological surface Fermi arcs. Generically, we find that the HgTe-class materials with nontrivial band inversion and noncentrosymmetry provide a promising arena to…
Higher-order topology yields intriguing multidimensional topological phenomena, while Weyl semimetals have unconventional properties such as chiral anomaly. However, so far, Weyl physics remain disconnected with higher-order topology. Here, we report the theoretical discovery of higher-order Weyl points and thereby the establishment of such an important connection. We demonstrate that higher-order Weyl points can emerge in chiral materials such as chiral tetragonal crystals as the intermediate phase between the conventional Weyl semimetal and 3D higher-order topological phases. Higher-order We…
In quantum mechanics, a particle is best described by the wave packet instead of the plane wave. Here, we study the wave-packet scattering problem in Weyl semimetals with the low-energy Weyl fermions of different chiralities. Our results show that the wave packet acquires a chirality-protected shift in the single impurity scattering process. More importantly, the chirality-protected shift can lead to an anomalous scattering probability, thus, affects the transport properties in Weyl semimetals. We find that the ratio between the transport lifetime and the quantum lifetime increases sharply whe…
Weyl and Dirac semimetals recently stimulate intense research activities due to their novel properties. Combining first-principles calculations and effective model analysis, we predict that nonmagnetic compounds BaYBi (Y=Au, Ag and Cu) are Dirac semimetals. As for the magnetic compound EuYBi, although the time reversal symmetry is broken, their long-range magnetic ordering cannot split the Dirac point into pairs of Weyl points. However, we propose that partially substitute Eu ions by Ba ions will realize the Weyl semimetal.
Unconventional Weyl semimetals have attracted intensive research interest in condensed matter physics and materials science, but they are very rare in two dimensions. In this work, based on symmetry analysis and the first-principles electronic structure calculations, we predict that the Si/Bi van der Waals heterostructure is a two-dimensional unconventional quadratic double Weyl semimetal with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Although unprotected by the C3v double group symmetry of the heterostructure, the two-dimensional quadratic double Weyl semimetal is stable for compressive strains up to…
Motivated by the proposal of a Weyl-semimetal phase in pyrochlore iridates, we consider a Hubbard-type model on the pyrochlore lattice. To shed light on the question as to why such a state has not been observed experimentally, its robustness is analyzed. On the one hand, we study the possible phases when the system is doped. Magnetic frustration favors several phases with magnetic and charge order that do not occur at half filling, including additional Weyl-semimetal states close to quarter filling. On the other hand, we search for density waves that break translational symmetry and destroy th…
Weyl semimetals are a new member of the topological materials family, featuring a pair of singly degenerate Weyl cones with linear dispersion around the nodes in the bulk, and Fermi arcs on the surface. Depending on whether the system conserves or violates Lorentz symmetry, Weyl semimetals can be categorized into two classes. Photoemission spectroscopy measurements have confirmed the TaAs-class and WTe2-class of Weyl semimetals as type-I and type-II respectively. This review article aims to elucidate and elaborate on the basic concepts of Weyl semimetals and quasiparticle interference experime…
Graphene, topological insulators, and Weyl semimetals are three widely studied materials classes which possess Dirac or Weyl cones arising from either sublattice symmetry or spin-orbit coupling. In this work, we present a theory of a new class of bulk Dirac and Weyl cones, dubbed Weyl orbital semimetals, where the orbital polarization and texture inversion between two electronic states at discrete momenta lend itself into protected Dirac or Weyl cones without spin-orbit coupling. We also predict several families of Weyl orbital semimetals including V$_3$S$_4$, NiTi3S6, BLi, and PbO$_2$ via fir…
Type-II Weyl semimetals are characterized by the tilted linear dispersion in the low-energy excitations, mimicking Weyl fermions but with manifest violation of the Lorentz invariance, which has intriguing quantum transport properties. The magnetoconductivity of type-II Weyl semimetals is investigated numerically based on lattice models in parallel electric and magnetic field. We show that in the high-field regime, the sign of the magnetoconductivity of an inversion-symmetry-breaking type-II Weyl semimetals depends on the direction of the magnetic field, whereas in the weak field regime, positi…
We propose that the noncentrosymmetric LiGaGe-type hexagonal $ABC$ crystal SrHgPb realizes a new type of topological semimetal that hosts both Dirac and Weyl points in momentum space. The symmetry-protected Dirac points arise due to a band inversion and are located on the sixfold rotation $z$-axis, whereas the six pairs of Weyl points related by sixfold symmetry are located on the perpendicular $k_z=0$ plane. By studying the electronic structure as a function of the buckling of the HgPb layer, which is the origin of inversion symmetry breaking, we establish that the coexistence of Dirac and We…
The recent discovery of a Weyl semimetal in TaAs offers the first Weyl fermion observed in nature and dramatically broadens the classification of topological phases. However, in TaAs it has proven challenging to study the rich transport phenomena arising from emergent Weyl fermions. The series Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ are inversion-breaking, layered, tunable semimetals already under study as a promising platform for new electronics and recently proposed to host Type II, or strongly Lorentz-violating, Weyl fermions. Here we report the discovery of a Weyl semimetal in Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ at $x = …
We predict a nonlinear Hall effect in certain Weyl semimetals with broken inversion symmetry. When the energy dispersions about pairs of Weyl nodes are skewed -- the Weyl cones are "tilted" -- the concerted actions of the anomalous velocity and the chiral anomaly give rise to the nonlinear Hall effect. This Hall conductivity is linear in both electric and magnetic fields, and depends critically on the tilting of the Weyl cones. We also show that this effect does not rely on a finite Berry curvature dipole, in contrast to the intrinsic quantum nonlinear Hall effect that was recently observed in…
We investigate the orthorhombic phase (Td) of layered transition-metal-dichalcogenide MoTe$_2$ as a Weyl semimetal candidate, which was discovered to be a superconductor in our recent experiment. MoTe$_2$ exhibits four pairs of Weyl points lying slightly ($\sim$ 6 meV) above the Fermi energy in the bulk band structure. Unlike its cousin WTe$_2$, which was predicted to be a type-II Weyl semimetal recently, the spacing between each pair of Weyl points is found to be as large as 4 percent of the reciprocal lattice in MoTe$_2$ (six times larger than that of WTe$_2$). When projected to the surface,…
We propose that a Floquet Weyl semimetal state can be induced in three-dimensional topological insulators, either nonmagnetic or magnetic, by the application of off-resonant light. The virtual photon processes play a critical role in renormalizing the Dirac mass and so resulting in a topological semimetal with vanishing gap at Weyl points. The present mechanism via off-resonant light is quite different from that via on-resonant light, the latter being recently suggested to give rise to a Floquet topological state in ordinary band insulators.
We study dynamical mass generation and the resultant helical spin orders in topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals, including the edge states of quantum spin Hall insulators, the surface states of weak topological insulators, and the bulk materials of Weyl semimetals. In particular, the helical spin textures of Weyl semimetals manifest the spin-momentum locking of Weyl fermions in a visible manner. The spin-wave fluctuations of the helical order carry electric charge density; therefore, the spin textures can be electrically controlled in a simple and predictable manner.
Weyl semimetals have been classified into type-I and type-II with respect to the geometry of their Fermi surfaces at the Weyl points. Here, we propose a new class of Weyl semimetal, whose unique Fermi surface contains two electron or two hole pockets touching at a multi-Weyl point, dubbed as type-III Weyl semimetal. Based on first-principles calculations, we first show that quasi-one-dimensional compound (TaSe4)2I is a type-III Weyl semimetal with larger chiral charges. (TaSe4)2I can support four-fold helicoidal surface states with remarkably long Fermi arcs on the (001) surface. Angle-resolve…
Weyl semimetals and nodal line semimetals are characterized by linear band touching at zero-dimensional points and one-dimensional lines, respectively. We predict that a circularly polarized light drives nodal line semimetals into Weyl semimetals. The Floquet Weyl points thus obtained are tunable by the incident light, which enables investigations of them in a highly controllable manner. The transition from nodal line semimetals to Weyl semimetals is accompanied by the emergence of a large and tunable anomalous Hall conductivity. Our predictions are experimentally testable by transport measure…
We present systematic theoretical studies of both bulk and surface electromagnetic eigenmodes, or polaritons, in Weyl semimetals. We derive the tensors of bulk and surface conductivity taking into account all possible combinations of the optical transitions involving bulk and surface electron states. We show how information about electronic structure of Weyl semimetals, such as position and separation of Weyl nodes, Fermi energy, and Fermi arc surface states, can be unambiguously extracted from measurements of the dispersion, transmission, reflection, and polarization of electromagnetic waves.
We performed a series of high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) and resistance measurements on the Weyl semimetal NbAs. The crystal structure remains stable up to 26 GPa according to the powder XRD data. The resistance of NbAs single crystal increases monotonically with pressure at low temperature. Up to 20 GPa, no superconducting transition is observed down to 0.3 K. These results show that the Weyl semimetal phase is robust in NbAs, and applying pressure is not a good way to get a topological superconductor from a Weyl semimetal.
