Carbon nanotube (CNT) have been known to increase the heat transfer at the solid-liquid interfaces, but have a limitation due to the interfacial thermal resistance. Vibrational mismatch at the interface leads to this interfacial thermal resistance, which plays an important role in energy transfer at the boundary. Negligible work has been reported on the influence of CNT diameter on the resistance through the vibrational mismatch study. Molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to investigate the effect of CNT diameter on interfacial resistance between carbon nanotube (CNT) and water molecules. This work is an effort to understand the heat transfer phenomenon at the interface by quantifying the vibrational mismatch. Analysis of the vibrational spectra of CNT and water molecules is done to study the effect of CNT diameter on interfacial resistance. Starting with the initial configuration, and equilibrating the system of CNT and water molecules at 300 K and 1 atm, the CNT temperature is raised to 700 K by velocity rescaling. This system is now allowed to relax as a micro-canonical ensemble. Based on the lumped capacitance analysis, the time constant of the CNT temperature response is determined, which is then used to compute the interfacial thermal resistance. The interfacial thermal resistance is observed to be relatively higher for the larger diameter nanotube. This is attributed to the higher vibrational mismatch existing for larger diameter CNT as a result of low overlapping region between vibrational density states of CNT and water molecules. For smaller diameter CNT, the interfacial thermal resistance is low which results in the efficient heat transfer at the interface thus, emphasizing the indispensable role of larger diameter CNTs in the cooling applications.
Interface widely exists in carbon nanotube (CNT) assembly materials, taking place at different length scales. It determines severely the mechanical properties of these assembly materials. Here I assess the mechanical properties of individual CNTs and CNT bundles, the inter-layer or inter-shell mechanics in multi-walled CNTs, the shear properties between adjacent CNTs, and the assembly-dependent mechanical and multifunctional properties of macroscopic CNT fibers and films.
A simple empirical model and approach are introduced for calculation of the vibrational spectra of arbitrary single wall carbon nanotubes. Differently from the frequently used force constants description, the model employs only invariant quantities such as variations of lengths and angles. All the salient qualitative features of vibrational spectra of nanotubes naturally follow from the vibrational Hamiltonian of graphene upon its isometric mapping onto a cylindrical surface and without any ad hoc corrections. A qualitative difference with previous results is found in a parabolic, rather than …
We report a detailed study of the vibrational properties of BN single-walled nanotubes and of the BN monolayer. Our results have been obtained from a well-established Tight-Binding model complemented with an electrostatic model to account for the long-range interactions arising from the polar nature of the material, and which are not included in the Tight-Binding model. Our study provides a wealth of data for the BN monolayer and nanotubes, such as phonon band structure, vibrational density of states, elastic constants, etc. For the nanotubes we obtain the behavior of the optically active mode…
We have developed a pair-potential approach for the evaluation of van der Waals interaction between carbon nanotubes in bundles. Starting from a continuum model, we show that the intertube modes range from $5 cm^{-1}$ to $60 cm^{-1}$. Using a non-orthogonal tight-binding approximation for describing the covalent intra-tube bonding in addition, we confirme a slight chiral dependance of the breathing mode frequency and we found that this breathing mode frequency increase by $\sim$ 10 % if the nanotube lie inside a bundle as compared to the isolated tube.
A study based on ab initio calculations is presented on the estructural, elastic, and vibrational properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes with different radii and chiralities. We use SIESTA, an implementation of pseudopotential-density-functional theory which allows calculations on systems with a large number of atoms per cell. Different quantities like bond distances, Young moduli, Poisson ratio and the frequencies of different phonon branches are monitored versus tube radius. The validity of expectations based on graphite is explored down to small radii, where some deviations appear relat…
In order to accommodate an increasing demand for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with desirable characteristics one has to understand the origin of helicity of their structures. Here, through in situ microscopy we demonstrate that the nucleation of a carbon nanotube is initiated by the formation of the carbon cap. Nucleation begins with the formation of a graphene embryo that is bound between opposite step-edges on the nickel catalyst surface. The embryo grows larger as the step-edges migrate along the surface, leading to the formation of a curved carbon cap when the steps flow across the edges of adj…
In building up composite structures using carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers, the fiber-to-matrix interfacial shear strength (IFSS) is one of the most important issues. Originating from the assembly characteristics of CNT fiber, the IFSS strongly depends on the fiber's twisting level and densification level. Furthermore, there are rich ways to modify the fiber surface and thus enhance the IFSS, including the physical and chemical modification on fiber surface, the infiltration of matrix resin into CNT fiber, and the introduction of silane coupling agent. A new feature differing from carbon fibers is…
We study the interfacial structure, stability, and elastic properties of composite carbon films containing nanotubes. Our Monte Carlo simulations show that Van der Waals forces play a vital role in shaping up the interfacial geometry, producing a curved graphitic wall surrounding the tubes. The most stable structures are predicted to have intermediate densities, high anisotropies, and increased elastic moduli compared to pure amorphous carbon films.
We show that the performance of pentacene transistors can be significantly improved by maximizing the interfacial area at single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)/pentacene. The interfacial areas are varied by anchoring short SWCNTs of different densities (0-30/μm) to the Pd electrodes. The average mobility is increased three, six and nine times for low, medium and high SWCNT densities, respectively, compared to the devices with zero SWCNT. The current on-off ratio and on-current are increased up to 40 times and 20 times with increasing the SWCNT density. We explain the improved device performanc…
Vibrational energy transfer from photo-excited single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to coupled proteins is a key to engineer thermally induced biological reactions such as photothermal therapy. Here, we explored vibrational energy transfer from the photo-excited SWCNTs to different adsorbed biological materials by means of a femtosecond pump-probe technique. We show that the vibrational relaxation time of the radial breathing modes (RBMs) in SWCNTs significantly depends on the structure of coupled materials, i.e. proteins or biopolymers, indicating the vibrational energy transfer is governed …
We discuss the conductance of a molecular bridge between mesoscopic electrodes supporting low-dimensional transport and bearing an internal structure. As an example for such nanoelectrodes we assume semi-infinite (carbon) nanotubes. In the Landauer scattering matrix approach, we show that the conductance of this hybrid is very sensitive to the geometry of the contact unlike the usual behaviour in the presence of bulk electrodes.
Single-walled carbon nanotubes are hollow cylinders, that can grow centimeters long by carbon incorporation at the interface with a catalyst. They display semi-conducting or metallic characteristics, depending on their helicity, that is determined during their growth. To support the quest for a selective synthesis, we develop a thermodynamic model, that relates the tube-catalyst interfacial energies, temperature, and the resulting tube chirality. We show that nanotubes can grow chiral because of the configurational entropy of their nanometer-sized edge, thus explaining experimentally observed …
We study the influence of structural lattice fluctuations on the elastic electron transport in single-wall carbon nanotubes within a density-functional-based scheme. In the linear response regime, the linear conductance is calculated via configurational averages over the distorted lattice. Results obtained from a frozen-phonon approach as well as from molecular dynamics simulations are compared. We further suggest that the effect of structural fluctuations can be qualitatively captured by the Anderson model with bond disorder. The influence of individual vibrational modes on the electronic tra…
The electrical and chemical properties of carbon nanotubes vary significantly with different chirality and diameter, making the experimental determination of these structural properties important. Here, we show that the vibrational density of states (VDOS) contains information on the structure of carbon nanotubes, particularly at low frequencies. We show that the diameter and chirality of the nanotubes can be determined from the characteristic low frequency $L$ and $L'$ modes in the VDOS. For zigzag nanotubes, the $L$ peak splits into two peaks giving rise to another low energy $L"$ peak. The …
In this paper, we proposed a lattice dynamic treatment for the total potential energy for single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT's) which is, apart from a parameter for the non-linear effects, extracted from the vibrational energy of the planar graphene sheet. Based upon the proposal, we investigated systematically the relaxed lattice configuration for narrow SWCNT's, the strain energy, the Young's modulus and Poisson ratio, and the lattice vibrational properties respected to the relaxed equilibrium tubule structure. Our calculated results for various physical quantities are nicely in consisten…
The structural, electronic, optical and vibrational properties of the collapsed (10,10) single-walled carbon nanotube bundle under hydrostatic pressure have been studied by the first-principles calculations. Some features are observed in the present study: First, a collapsed structure is found, which is distinct from both of the herringbone and parallel structures obtained previously. Secondly, a pseudo-gap induced by the collapse appears along the symmetry axis \textit{$Γ$X}. Thirdly, the relative orientation between the collapsed tubes has an important effect on their electronic, optical and…
A continuous model of double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) low-frequency dynamics was constructed. In the frame of the approach proposed formation of a DWCNT low-frequency phonon spectrum from the ones of corresponding single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was considered. Environmental influence on the individual DWCNT phonon spectrum was studied. A combined method of van der Waals interlayer coupling coefficients evaluation was proposed, and it is based on Raman spectroscopy data and known values of graphite elastic moduli. Also DWCNT low-temperature specific heat was calculated. In the mo…
The role of interfacial nonidealities and disorder on thermal transport across interfaces is traditionally assumed to add resistance to heat transfer, decreasing the thermal boundary conductance (TBC).$^1$ However, recent computational works have suggested that interfacial defects can enhance this thermal boundary conductance through emergence of unique vibrations that are intrinsic to the material interface and defect atoms,$^{2-6}$ a finding that contradicts traditional theory and conventional understanding. By manipulating the local heat flux of atomic vibrations that comprise these interfa…
We propose to use the damping signal of an oscillating cantilever in dynamic atomic force microscopy as a noninvasive tool to study the vibrational structure of the substrate. We present atomically resolved maps of damping in carbon nanotube peapods, capable of identifying the location and packing of enclosed Dy@C82 molecules as well as local excitations of vibrational modes inside nanotubes of different diameter. We elucidate the physical origin of damping in a microscopic model and provide quantitative interpretation of the observations by calculating the vibrational spectrum and damping of …
Moiré patterns are additional, long-range periodicities in twisted crystalline bilayers. They are known to fundamentally change the electronic states of the layers, but similar effects on their mechanical and vibrational properties have not been discussed so far. Here we show that the Moiré potential shifts the radial breathing mode in double walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs). The change of frequency is expected to be proportional to the shift in optical transition energies, which are induced by the Moiré patterns. To verify our model we performed resonant Raman scattering on purified and sorte…
Traditional theories of interfacial heat transfer by atomic vibrations, also known as phonons, do not explain how vibrational mode interactions contribute to interface conductance. Traditional methods also use the concept of phonons as particles or waves which propagate and transmit energy through interfaces; such methods are therefore inapplicable to realistic non-crystalline systems where phonons are not propagating. Here we introduce a more general formalism of interfacial phonon transport, rigorously derived from interatomic interactions projected onto the normal modes of the system, showi…
Direct measurement of local phonon dispersion in individual nanostructures can greatly advance our understanding of their electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties. However, such experimental measurements require extremely high detection sensitivity and combined spatial, energy and momentum resolutions, thus has been elusive. Here, we develop a four-dimensional electron energy loss spectroscopy (4D-EELS) technique based a monochromated scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM), and present the position-dependent phonon dispersion measurement in individual boron nitride nanotubes (B…
We use ab initio density functional calculations to study the chemical functionalization of single-wall carbon nanotubes and graphene monolayers by silyl (SiH3) radicals and hydrogen. We find that silyl radicals form strong covalent bonds with graphene and nanotube walls, causing local structural relaxations that enhance the sp3 character of these graphitic nanostructures. Silylation transforms all carbon nanotubes into semiconductors, independent of their chirality. Calculated vibrational spectra suggest that specific frequency shifts can be used as a signature of successful silylation.
In this paper we present the results on Raman-active modes calculation in achiral $(n,n)$ and $(n,0)$ carbon nanotubes (CNTs). vibrational spectra are derived as the eigenvalues of corresponding dynamical matrix at the $Γ$-point of Brillouin zone. Diagonal components and $α_{xy} (=α_{yx})$ are the only non-zero components of polarization tensor. Selection rules for Raman-active modes are determined by direct estimations of matrix elements responsible for the intensities of corresponding vibrational transitions. Few $E_{2g}$ modes can be non-Raman-active because of their ``fine'' vibrational st…
The electronic and vibrational density of states of a semiconducting carbon nanotube in a crossed junction was investigated by elastic and inelastic scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The strong radial compression of the nanotube at the junction induces local metallization spatially confined to a few nm. The local electronic modifications are correlated with the observed changes in the radial breathing and G-band phonon modes, which react very sensitively to local mechanical deformation. In addition, the experiments reveal the crucial contribution of the image charges to the contact potential at…
We present a procedure for determining independently the lattice structure and the vibrational properties of the same individual nano-object. For the example of an individual single-walled carbon nanotube we demonstrate the determination of the structural indices (n,m) of the nanotube by electron diffraction and of the frequencies of vibrational modes by micro-Raman spectroscopy. The precise and independent determination of both structure and mode frequencies allows for direct and unambiguous verification of molecular dynamical calculations and of conclusions drawn from Raman-only experiments.
Metal catalysts supporting the growth of Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes display different carbon solubilities and chemical reactivities. In order to specifically assess the role of carbon solubility, we take advantage of the physical transparency of a tight binding model established for Ni-C alloys, to develop metal carbon models where all properties, except carbon solubility, are similar. These models are used to analyze carbon incorporation mechanisms, modifications of metal / carbon wall interfacial properties induced thereby, and the associated nanotube growth mechanisms. Fine tuning carbon …
Near-field spectroscopy has been extensively applied recently to analyze collective optical properties of materials at the nanoscale. However, vibrations of small molecules were only recognizable in close proximity to a metallic resonator. We show that encapsulation in boron nitride nanotubes (BNNT) enhances the near-field vibrational spectra of C$_{60}$ fullerene, reaching a sensitivity limit of a few hundred molecules. Furthermore, products of chemical reactions inside the tubes can be identified, so long as their vibrational signatures lie in the polariton gap of the BNNT.
We report on single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) specific $^{13}$C isotope enrichment. The high temperature annealing of isotope enriched fullerenes encapsulated in SWCNTs yields double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) with a high isotope enrichment of the inner wall. The vibrational spectra evidences that no carbon exchange occurs between the two walls. The method facilitates the identification of the Raman signal of the outer and inner tubes. Nuclear magnetic resonance proves the significant contrast of the isotope enriched SWCNTs as compared to other carbon phases, and provides information on…
We study heat dissipation from a (10,10) CNT to a SiO2 substrate using equilibrium and non-equilibrium classical molecular dynamics. The CNT-substrate thermal boundary conductance (TBC) is computed both from the relaxation time of the CNT-substrate temperature difference, and from the time autocorrelation function of the interfacial heat flux at equilibrium (Green-Kubo relation). The power spectrum of interfacial heat flux fluctuation and the time evolution of the internal CNT energy distribution suggest that: 1) thermal coupling is dominated by long wavelength phonons between 0-10 THz, 2) hig…
Vibrational properties of composites based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and conducting polymers of the type polyaniline (PANI) and poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) are reported. For PANI-functionalized SWNTs, the intensity increase of the Raman band at 178 cm-1, associated with radial breathing modes of SWNTs bundles, indicates an additional roping of nanotubes due to the presence of the polymer. The interaction of this composite with NH4OH solution involves an internal redox reaction between PANI and SWNTs. Thus, the polymer chain undergoes a transition from the semi-ox…
Thermal transport in the Si/SiO$_2$ multishell nanotubes is investigated theoretically. The phonon energy spectra are obtained using the atomistic Lattice Dynamics approach. Thermal conductivity is calculated using the Boltzmann transport equation within the relaxation time approximation. Redistribution of the vibrational spectra in multishell nanotubes leads to a decrease of the phonon group velocity and the thermal conductivity as compared to homogeneous Si nanowires. Phonon scattering on the Si/SiO$_2$ interfaces is another key factor of strong reduction of the thermal conductivity in these…
We describe a semi-empirical atomic basis Extended Hückel Theoretical (EHT) technique that can be used to calculate bulk bandstructure, surface density of states, electronic transmission and interfacial chemistry of various materials within the same computational platform. We apply this method to study multiple technologically important systems, starting with carbon-nanotubes (CNT) and their interfaces in this paper, and silicon-based heterostructures in our follow-up paper. We find that when it comes to quantum transport through interesting, complex heterostructures, the Huckel bandstructure …
We develop a continuous theory of low-frequency dynamics for nanotubes with truly two-dimensional (2D) walls constituted by single-atom monolayer. In this frame topological bending elasticity of the monolayer is not related to its vanishing macroscopic thickness. The proposed approach predicts completely new sound dispersions and radius dependences of non-resonant Raman-active modes frequencies in single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT). Resulting relations are suitable for nanotubes identification and more complete or alternative characterization. The theory is also applied to describe the low…
We present the first low-temperature thermodynamic investigation of the controlled physisorption of He$^{4}$ gas in carbon single-wall nanotube (SWNT) samples. The vibrational specific heat measured between 100 mK and 6 K demonstrates an extreme sensitivity to outgassing conditions. For bundles with a few number of NTs the extra contribution to the specific heat, C$_{ads}$, originating from adsorbed He$^{4}$ at very low density displays 1D behavior, typical for He atoms localized within linear channels as grooves and interstitials, for the first time evidenced. For larger bundles, C$_{ads}$ re…

Dynamical charge transfer processes at molecule-metal interfaces proceed in the few fs time scale that renders them highly relevant to electronic excitations in optoelectronic devices. Yet, knowledge thereof is limited when electronic ground state situations are considered that implicate charge transfer directly at the fermi energy. Here we show that such processes can be accessed by means of vibrational excitations, with non-adiabatic electron-vibron coupling leading to distinct asymmetric line shapes. Thereby the characteristic time scale of this interfacial dynamical charge transfer can be …
We propose to reduce the thermal conductivity of silicon nanowires (SiNWs) by introducing small hole at the centre, i.e. construct silicon nanotube (SiNT) structures. Our numerical results demonstrate that a very small hole (only 1% reduction in cross section area) can induce a 35% reduction in room temperature thermal conductivity. Moreover, with the same cross section area, thermal conductivity of SiNT is only about 33% of that of SiNW at room temperature. The spatial distribution of vibrational energy reveals that localization modes are concentrated on the inner and outer surfaces of SiNTs.…
In this paper, we provide a detailed expression of the vibrational potential for the lattice dynamics of the single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) satisfying the requirements of the exact rigid translational as well as rotational symmetries, which is a nontrivial generalization of the valence force model for the planar graphene sheet. With the model, the low frequency behavior of the dispersion of the acoustic modes as well as the flexure mode can be precisely calculated. Based upon a comprehensive chiral symmetry analysis, the calculated mode frequencies (including all the Raman and infrared a…
At any metal-carbon nanotube interface there is charge transfer and the induced interfacial field determines the position of the carbon nanotube band structure relative to the metal Fermi-level. In the case of a single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) supported on a gold substrate, we show that the charge transfers induce a local electrostatic potential perturbation which gives rise to the observed Fermi-level shift in scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements. We also discuss the relevance of this study to recent experiments on carbon nanotube transistors and argue that the Fermi-level al…
I demonstrate a directional motion-transmission behavior of aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using atomistic simulations. The network of overlapping $π$ orbitals at the interface act as gear teeth to translate the sliding motion of a CNT into a rotating motion of the adjacent CNT, or \textit{viceversa}. The efficiency of this orthogonal motion transmission is found to strongly depend on the tube chirality, by which the interfacial stacking configuration of the atoms is determined. These results have strong implications on the design of the motion transmission system at the nanoscale.
Recent air pollution issues have raised significant attention to develop efficient air filters, and one of the most promising candidates is that enabled by nanofibers. We explore here selective molecular capture mechanism for volatile organic compounds in carbon nanotube networks by performing atomistic simulations. The results are discussed with respect to the two key parameters that define the performance of nanofiltration, i.e. the capture efficiency and flow resistance, which validate the advantage of carbon nanotube networks with high surface-to-volume ratio and atomistically smooth surfa…
Energy exchanges between orderly intertube axial motion and vibrational modes are studied for isolated systems of two coaxial carbon nanotubes at temperatures ranging from 300 K to 500 K. It is found that the excess intertube van der Waals energy, depleted from the intertube axial motion, is primarily stored in low-frequency mechanical modes of the oscillator for an extended period of time, and furthermore, such an energy exchange may be reversible. A new nanoscale tribological phenomenon of negative friction is reported for the first time in concentric cylindrical carbon nanotube oscillators.
As the length-scales of materials decrease, heterogeneities associated with interfaces approach the importance of the surrounding materials. Emergent electronic and magnetic interface properties in superlattices have been studied extensively by both experiments and theory. $^{1-6}$ However, the presence of interfacial vibrations that impact phonon-mediated responses, like thermal conductivity $^{7,8}$, has only been inferred in experiments indirectly. While it is accepted that intrinsic phonons change near boundaries $^{9,10}$, the physical mechanisms and length-scales through which interfacia…
Using the first principles calculations we have studied the vibrational modes and Raman spectra of a (10, 10) single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) bundle under hydrostatic pressure. Detailed analysis shows that the original radial breathing mode (RBM) of the SWNT bundle disappears after the structural phase transition (SPT). And significantly a RBM-like mode appears at about 509 cm^{-1}, which could be considered as a fingerprint of the SPT happened in the SWNT bundle, and further used to determine the microscopic structure of the bundle after the SPT.
Interfacial friction plays a crucial role in the mechanical properties of carbon nanotube based fibers, composites, and devices. Here we use molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the pressure effect on the friction within carbon nanotube bundles. It reveals that the intertube frictional force can be increased by a factor of 1.5 ~ 4, depending on tube chirality and radius, when all tubes collapse above a critical pressure and when the bundle remains collapsed with unloading down to atmospheric pressure. Furthermore, the overall cross-sectional area also decreases significantly for the co…
An attractive class of materials for photo(electro)chemical reactions are hybrids based on semiconducting metal oxides and nanocarbons (e.g. carbon nanotubes (CNT), graphene), where the nanocarbon acts as a highly-stable conductive scaffold onto which the nanostructured inorganic phase can be immobilised; an architecture that maximises surface area and minimises charge transport/transfer resistance. TiO$_{2}$/CNT photoanodes produced by atomic layer deposition on CNT fabrics are shown to be efficient for H$_{2}$ production ($0.07 μmol/min$ $H_{2}$ at $0.2V$ $vs Ag/AgCl$), nearly doubling the p…

Recent studies of single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in aqueous media have showed that water can significantly affect the tube mechanical properties. CNTs under hydrostatic compression can preserve their elastic properties up to large pressure values, while exhibiting exceptional resistance to mechanical loadings. It was experimentally observed that CNTs with encapsulated linear carbon chains (LCCs), when subjected to high hydrostatic pressure values, present irreversible red shifts in some of their vibrational frequencies. In order to address the cause of this phenomenon, we have carried o…
This work provides the community with an easily executable open-source Python package designed to automize the evaluation of Interfacial Phonons (InterPhon). Its strategy of arbitrarily defining the interfacial region and periodicity alleviates the excessive computational cost in applying ab initio phonon calculations to interfaces and enables efficient extraction of interfacial phonons. InterPhon makes it possible to apply all of the phonon-based predictions that have been available for bulk systems, to interfacial systems. The first example, in which this package was applied to InAs surfaces…
Despite the great promise of carbon nanotube field effect transistors (CNT FETs) for applications in chemical and biochemical detection, a quantitative understanding of sensor responses is lacking. To explore the role of electrostatics in sensor transduction, experiments were conducted with a set of highly similar compounds designed to adsorb onto the CNT FET via a pyrene linker group and take on a set of known charge states under ambient conditions. Acidic and basic species were observed to induce threshold voltage shifts of opposite sign, consistent with gating of the CNT FET by local charge…

The heat flux autocorrelation functions of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with different radius and lengths is calculated using equilibrium molecular dynamics. The thermal conductance of CNTs is also calculated using the Green-Kubo relation from the linear response theory. By pointing out the ambiguity in the cross section definition of single wall CNTs, we use the thermal conductance instead of conductivity in calculations and discussions. We find that the thermal conductance of CNTs diverges with the CNT length. After the analysis of vibrational density of states, it can be concluded that more low …
Raman spectroscopy on carbon nanotubes (CNT) yields a rich variety of information owing to the close interplay between electronic and vibrational properties. In this paper, we review the properties of double wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs). In particular, it is shown that SWCNT encapsulating C$_{60}$, so-called peapods, are transformed into DWCNTs when subject to a high temperature treatment. The inner tubes are grown in a catalyst free environment and do not suffer from impurities or defects that are usually encountered for as-grown SWCNTs or DWCNTs. As a consequence, the inner tubes are grown…
We study 23 to 30 nm long suspended single-wall carbon nanotube quantum dots and observe both their stretching and bending vibrational modes. We use low-temperature DC electron transport to excite and measure the tubes' bending mode by making use of a positive feedback mechanism between their vibrations and the tunneling electrons. In these nano-electro-mechanical-systems (NEMS), we measure fundamental bending frequencies $f_{bend}\approx$ 75 - 280 GHz, and extract quality factors $Q \sim 10^{6}$. The NEMS' frequencies can be tuned by a factor of two with tension induced by mechanical breakjun…
