Satisfiability filters, introduced by S. A. Weaver et al. in 2014, are a new and promising type of filters to address set membership testing. In order to construct satisfiability filters, it is necessary to find disparate solutions to hard random $k$-SAT problems. This paper compares simulated annealing, simulated quantum annealing and walkSAT, an open-source SAT solver, in terms of their ability to find such solutions. The results indicate that solutions found by simulated quantum annealing are generally less disparate than solutions found by the other solvers and therefore less useful for the construction of satisfiability filters.
The utility of satisfiability (SAT) as an application focused hard computational problem is well established. We explore the potential of quantum annealing to enhance classical SAT solving, especially where sampling from the space of all possible solutions is of interest. We address the formulation of SAT problems to make them suitable for commercial quantum annealers, practical concerns in their implementation, and how the performance of the resulting quantum solver compares to and complements classical SAT solvers.
We determine the classical and quantum complexities of a specific ensemble of three-satisfiability problems with a unique satisfying assignment for up to N=100 and N=80 variables, respectively. In the classical limit we employ generalized ensemble techniques and measure the time that a Markovian Monte Carlo process spends in searching classical ground states. In the quantum limit we determine the maximum finite correlation length along a quantum adiabatic trajectory determined by the linear sweep of the adiabatic control parameter in the Hamiltonian composed of the problem Hamiltonian and the …
We study the performance of quantum annealing for two sets of problems, namely, 2-satisfiability (2-SAT) problems represented by Ising-type Hamiltonians, and nonstoquastic problems which are obtained by adding extra couplings to the 2-SAT problem Hamiltonians. In addition, we add to the transverse Ising-type Hamiltonian used for quantum annealing a third term, the trigger Hamiltonian with ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic couplings, which vanishes at the beginning and end of the annealing process. We also analyze some problem instances using the energy spectrum, average energy or overlap of t…
In this paper we detail a classical algorithmic approach to the k-satisfiability (k-SAT) problem that is inspired by the quantum amplitude amplification algorithm. This work falls under the emerging field of quantum-inspired classical algorithms. To propose our modification, we adopt an existing problem model for k-SAT known as Universal SAT (UniSAT), which casts the Boolean satisfiability problem as a non-convex global optimization over a real-valued space. The quantum-inspired modification to UniSAT is to apply a conditioning operation to the objective function that has the effect of "amplif…
We study first order quantum phase transitions in mean-field spin glasses. We solve the quantum Random Energy Model using elementary methods and show that at the transition the eigenstate suddenly projects onto the unperturbed ground state and that the gap between the lowest states is exponentially small in the system size. We argue that this is a generic feature of all `Random First Order' models, which includes benchmarks such as random satisfiability. We introduce a two-time instanton to calculate this gap in general, and discuss the consequences for quantum annealing.
As a wide variety of quantum computing platforms become available, methods for assessing and comparing the performance of these devices are of increasing interest and importance. Inspired by the success of single-qubit error rate computations for tracking the progress of gate-based quantum computers, this work proposes a Quantum Annealing Single-qubit Assessment (QASA) protocol for quantifying the performance of individual qubits in quantum annealing computers. The proposed protocol scales to large quantum annealers with thousands of qubits and provides unique insights into the distribution of…
When solving propositional logic satisfiability (specifically 3SAT) using quantum annealing, we analyze the effect the difficulty of different instances of the problem has on the quality of the answer returned by the quantum annealer. A high-quality response from the annealer in this case is defined by a high percentage of correct solutions among the returned answers. We show that the phase transition regarding the computational complexity of the problem, which is well-known to occur for 3SAT on classical machines (where it causes a detrimental increase in runtime), persists in some form (but …

We introduce the reinforcement quantum annealing (RQA) scheme in which an intelligent agent interacts with a quantum annealer that plays the stochastic environment role of learning automata and tries to iteratively find better Ising Hamiltonians for the given problem of interest. As a proof-of-concept, we propose a novel approach for reducing the NP-complete problem of Boolean satisfiability (SAT) to minimizing Ising Hamiltonians and show how to apply the RQA for increasing the probability of finding the global optimum. Our experimental results on two different benchmark SAT problems (namely f…
Quantum computers have the potential of solving problems more efficiently than classical computers. While first commercial prototypes have become available, the performance of such machines in practical application is still subject to exploration. Quantum computers will not entirely replace classical machines, but serve as accelerators for specific problems. This necessitates integrating quantum computational primitives into existing applications. In this paper, we perform a case study on how to augment existing software with quantum computational primitives for the Boolean satisfiability prob…

Given a Boolean formula $ϕ(x)$ in conjunctive normal form (CNF), the density of states counts the number of variable assignments that violate exactly $e$ clauses, for all values of $e$. Thus, the density of states is a histogram of the number of unsatisfied clauses over all possible assignments. This computation generalizes both maximum-satisfiability (MAX-SAT) and model counting problems and not only provides insight into the entire solution space, but also yields a measure for the \emph{hardness} of the problem instance. Consequently, in real-world scenarios, this problem is typically infeas…
The observation of an unequivocal quantum speedup remains an elusive objective for quantum computing. The D-Wave quantum annealing processors have been at the forefront of experimental attempts to address this goal, given their relatively large numbers of qubits and programmability. A complete determination of the optimal time-to-solution (TTS) using these processors has not been possible to date, preventing definitive conclusions about the presence of a scaling advantage. The main technical obstacle has been the inability to verify an optimal annealing time within the available range. Here we…
Optimization of pre-production vehicle configurations is one of the challenges in the automotive industry. Given a list of tests requiring cars with certain features, it is desirable to find the minimum number of cars that cover the tests and obey the configuration rules. In this paper, we model the problem in the framework of satisfiability and solve it by utilizing the newly introduced hybrid constrained quadratic model (CQM) solver provided by D-Wave. The problem definition is based on the "Optimizing the Production of Test Vehicles" use case given in the BMW Quantum Computing Challenge. We…
The standard quantum annealing algorithm tries to approach the ground state of a classical system by slowly decreasing the hopping rates of a quantum random walk in the configuration space of the problem, where the on-site energies are provided by the classical energy function. In a quantum reinforcement algorithm, the annealing works instead by increasing gradually the strength of the on-site energies according to the probability of finding the walker on each site of the configuration space. Here, by using the path-integral Monte Carlo simulations of the quantum algorithms, we show that annea…
With progress in quantum technology more sophisticated quantum annealing devices are becoming available. While they offer new possibilities for solving optimization problems, their true potential is still an open question. As the optimal design of adiabatic algorithms plays an important role in their assessment, we illustrate the aspects and challenges to consider when implementing optimization problems on quantum annealing hardware based on the example of the traveling salesman problem (TSP). We demonstrate that tunneling between local minima can be exponentially suppressed if the quantum dyn…

Quantum annealing was originally proposed as an approach for solving combinatorial optimisation problems using quantum effects. D-Wave Systems has released a production model of quantum annealing hardware. However, the inherent noise and various environmental factors in the hardware hamper the determination of optimal solutions. In addition, the freezing effect in regions with weak quantum fluctuations generates outputs approximately following a Gibbs--Boltzmann distribution at an extremely low temperature. Thus, a quantum annealer may also serve as a fast sampler for the Ising spin-glass prob…

Over the past decade, the usefulness of quantum annealing hardware for combinatorial optimization has been the subject of much debate. Thus far, experimental benchmarking studies have indicated that quantum annealing hardware does not provide an irrefutable performance gain over state-of-the-art optimization methods. However, as this hardware continues to evolve, each new iteration brings improved performance and warrants further benchmarking. To that end, this work conducts an optimization performance assessment of D-Wave Systems' most recent Advantage Performance Update computer, which can n…
In this paper we analyze the performance of the Quantum Adiabatic Evolution algorithm on a variant of Satisfiability problem for an ensemble of random graphs parametrized by the ratio of clauses to variables, $γ=M/N$. We introduce a set of macroscopic parameters (landscapes) and put forward an ansatz of universality for random bit flips. We then formulate the problem of finding the smallest eigenvalue and the excitation gap as a statistical mechanics problem. We use the so-called annealing approximation with a refinement that a finite set of macroscopic variables (versus only energy) is used, …
The assumed computationally difficulty of factoring large integers forms the basis of security for RSA public-key cryptography, which specifically relies on products of two large primes or semi-primes. The best-known factoring algorithms for classical computers run in sub-exponential time. Since integer factorization is in NP, one can reduce this problem to any NP-hard problem, such as Boolean Satisfiability (SAT). While reducing factoring to SAT has proved to be useful for studying SAT solvers, attempting to factor large integers via such a reduction has not been found to be successful. Shor'…
