We present the detection of an absorpton feature at $E=8.77^{+0.05}_{-0.06}$ keV in the combined X-ray spectrum of the ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 1313 X-1 observed with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR, significant at the 3$σ$ level. If associated with blueshifted ionized iron, the implied outflow velocity is ~0.2$c$ for Fe XXVI, or ~0.25$c$ for Fe XXV. These velocities are similar to the ultrafast outflow seen in absorption recently discovered in this source at lower energies by XMM-Newton, and we therefore conclude that this is an iron component to the same outflow. Photoionization modeling marginally prefers the Fe XXV solution, but in either case the outflow properties appear to be extreme, potentially supporting a super-Eddington hypothesis for NGC 1313 X-1.

Ultraluminous pulsars are a definite proof that persistent super-Eddington accretion occurs in nature. They support the scenario according to which most Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs) are super-Eddington accretors of stellar mass rather than sub-Eddington intermediate mass black holes. An important prediction of theories of supercritical accretion is the existence of powerful outflows of moderately ionized gas at mildly relativistic speeds. In practice, the spectral resolution of X-ray gratings such as RGS onboard XMM-Newton is required to resolve their observational signatures in ULXs. Us…
The Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2992 has been monitored eight times by XMM-Newton in 2010 and then observed again in 2013, while in 2015 it was simultaneously targeted by Swift and NuSTAR. XMM-Newton always caught the source in a faint state (2-10 keV fluxes ranging from 0.3 to 1.6$\times10^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$) but NuSTAR showed an increase in the 2-10 keV flux up to 6$\times10^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. We find possible evidence of an Ultra Fast Outflow with velocity $v_1=0.21\pm0.01c$ (detected at about 99% confidence level) in such a flux state. The UFO in NGC 2992 is consistent with…
We report on one of the brightest flux levels of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 2992 ever observed in X-rays, on May 2019. The source has been monitored every few days from March 26, 2019 to December 14, 2019 by Swift-XRT, and simultaneous XMM-Newton (250 ks) and NuSTAR (120 ks) observations were triggered on May 6, 2019. The high count rate of the source (its 2-10 keV flux ranged between 0.7 and $1.0\times10^{-10}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$) allows us to perform a time-resolved spectroscopy, probing spatial scales of tens of gravitational radii from the central black hole. By constructing a map of the…
The inner-most region of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 2992 has long been suspected to be the location of intense AGN-host galaxy interaction, but photon pile-up in previous high-resolution observations hampered the study of soft X-ray excess and the interaction near its nucleus. We present an X-ray imaging spectroscopic analysis of the circumnuclear ($1^{\prime\prime}$--$3^{\prime\prime}$) region of NGC 2992 using the zeroth-order image of a 135 ks grating observation obtained with Chandra, which captured the nucleus in a historically low flux state. Extended soft X-ray emission is detected in the c…

We present the results of X-ray spectral-timing analysis of a 90ks XMM-Newton observation of the nearby, broad line, early-type AGN NGC5273. The X-ray spectrum revealed the clear presence of a reflection component at high energies, with a clear signature of a narrow iron line at 6.4 keV, consistent with distant reflection. Applying a relativistic reflection model, we found only marginal evidence for a broader relativistic line component. However, cross-spectral analysis revealed that, between 4 and 6 $\times 10^{-4}$ Hz, the 5-8 keV band lagged the 2-3 keV band, implying reflection of the iron…
The origin of narrow line region (NLR) outflows remains unknown. In this paper, we explore the scenario in which these outflows are circumnuclear clouds driven by energetic accretion disk winds. We choose the well-studied nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 as an example. By performing 3D hydrodynamical simulations, we are able to reproduce the radial distributions of velocity, mass outflow rate and kinetic luminosity of NLR outflows in the inner 100 pc deduced from spatial resolved spectroscopic observations. The demanded kinetic luminosity of disk winds is about two orders of magnitude higher tha…
We present the imaging and spectroscopic analysis of the combined Chandra ACIS-S observations of the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4945. We performed a spatially-resolved spectroscopy of the circumnuclear environment of the source, picturing the innermost 200 parsecs around the highly absorbed nucleus. The additional 200 ks ACIS-S data with respect to the previous campaign allowed us to map with even greater detail the central structure of this source and to discover an enhanced iron emission in the innermost nuclear region, with respect to the associated Compton reflection continuum. We …
We present the analysis of four NuSTAR observations of the luminous infrared galaxy merger NGC 6240, hosting a close pair of highly obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN). Over a period of about two years, the source exhibits hard X-ray variability of the order of 20 per cent, peaking around 20 keV. When the two AGN are resolved with Chandra, column densities in the range $N_\textrm{H} \sim 1-2 \times 10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ are estimated for both of them. The exact values are hard to determine, as they appear to depend on aspects that are sometimes overlooked in Compton-thick objects, such as the c…
The discovery of an ultrafast outflow has been reported in the z=0.0658 narrow line Seyfert galaxy IRAS 13224-3809 (Parker et al. 2017a). The ultrafast outflow was first inferred through the detection of highly blueshifted absorption lines (Parker et al. 2017a) and then confirmed with a principal component analysis (PCA) (Parker et al. 2017b). Two of the reported properties of this outflow differed from those typically detected in other AGN with ultrafast outflows. First, the outflow velocity was found not to vary with v=0.236c +/- 0.006c. Second, the equivalent width of the highly blueshifted…
We present results from a deep, coordinated $XMM$-$Newton$+$NuSTAR$ observation of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IRAS 00521-7054. The $NuSTAR$ data provide the first detection of this source in high-energy X-rays ($E > 10$ keV), and the broadband data show this to be a highly complex source which exhibits relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disc, further reprocessing by more distant material, neutral absorption, and evidence for ionised absorption in an extreme, ultrafast outflow ($v_{\rm{out}} \sim 0.4c$). Based on lamppost disc reflection models, we find evidence that the central superma…
We model the observed X-ray spectral continuum shape, ionic column densities, and absorption measure distribution (AMD) of the warm absorber in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 3783. We assume a photo-ionized medium with a uniform total (gas+radiation) pressure. The irradiation causes the wind to be radiation pressure compressed (RPC). We compare the observational characteristics derived from the 900 ksec Chandra observation to radiative transfer computations in pressure equilibrium using the radiative transfer code TITAN. We explore different values of the ionization parameter xi of the incident flux a…
