1RXS J180408.9-342058 is a transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary that exhibited a bright accretion outburst in 2015. We present Nustar, Swift, and Chandra observations obtained around the peak of this outburst. The source was in a soft X-ray spectral state and displayed an X-ray luminosity of Lx~(2-3)E37 (D/5.8 kpc)^2 erg cm-2 (0.5-10 keV). The Nustar data reveal a broad Fe-K emission line that we model as relativistically broadened reflection to constrain the accretion geometry. We found that the accretion disk is viewed at an inclination of i~27-35 degrees and extended close to the neutron star, down to Rin~5-7.5 gravitational radii (~11-17 km). This inner disk radius suggests that the neutron star magnetic field strength is B<2E8 G. We find a narrow absorption line in the Chandra/HEG data at an energy of ~7.64 keV with a significance of ~4.8 sigma. This feature could correspond to blue-shifted Fe xxvi and arise from an accretion disk wind, which would imply an outflow velocity of v~0.086c (~25800 km s-1). However, this would be extreme for an X-ray binary and it is unclear if a disk wind should be visible at the low inclination angle that we infer from our reflection analysis. Finally, we discuss how the X-ray and optical properties of 1RXS J180408.9-342058 are consistent with a relatively small (Porb<3 hr) binary orbit.

Relativistic Fe K emission lines from accretion disks and from disk winds encode key information about black holes, and their accretion and feedback mechanisms. We show that these two processes can in principle produce indistinguishable line profiles, such that they cannot be disentangled spectrally. We argue that it is likely that in many cases both processes contribute to the net line profile, and their relative contributions cannot be constrained purely by Fe K spectroscopy. In almost all studies of Fe K emission to date, a single process (either disk reflection or wind Compton scattering) …
We investigate constraints for the size and location of the X-ray source in 1H 0707-495 determined from the shape of the relativistically smeared reflection from the accretion disc. We develop a new code to model an extended X-ray source and we apply it to all archival XMM observations of 1H 0707-495. Contrary to Wilkins et al. we find that the relativistic reflection in this source is not consistent with an extended uniform corona. Instead, we find that the X-ray source must be very compact, with the size of at most a gravitational radius, and located at most at a few gravitational radii from…
The condensation of the corona for the correlation between the hard X-ray photon index $Γ$ and the reflection scaling factor $\Re$ in active galactic nuclei
A comprehensive wideband spectral analysis of the brightest black hole X-ray binary 4U $1543-47$ during its 2021 outburst is carried out for the first time using NICER, NuSTAR, and AstroSat observations by phenomenological and reflection modelling. The source attains a super-Eddington peak luminosity and remains in the soft state, with a small fraction ($< 3\%$) of the inverse-Comptonized photons. The spectral modelling reveals a steep photon index ($Γ\sim 2-2.6$) and relatively high inner disk temperature ($T_{in}\sim 0.9-1.27$ keV). The line-of-sight column density varies between ($0.45-0.54…
After 34 years, the black-hole candidate EXO 1846-031 went into outburst again in 2019. We investigate its spectral properties in the hard intermediate and the soft states with NuSTAR and Insight-HXMT. A reflection component has been detected in the two spectral states but possibly originating from different illumination spectra: in the intermediate state, the illuminating source is attributed to a hard coronal component, which has been commonly observed in other X-ray binaries, whereas in the soft state the reflection is probably produced by the disk self-irradiation. Both cases support EXO 1…
A triggered 140 ks XMM-Newton observation of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) Mrk 335 in December 2015 caught the active galaxy at its lowest X-ray flux since 2007. The NLS1 is relatively quiescent for the first ~120 ks of the observation before it flares in brightness by a factor of about five in the last 20 ks. Although only part of the flare is captured before the observation is terminated, the data reveal significant differences between the flare and quiescent phases. During the low-flux state, Mrk 335 demonstrates a reflection-dominated spectrum that results from a compact corona around a…
The lamp-post geometry is often used to model X-ray data of accreting black holes. Despite its simple assumptions, it has proven to be powerful in inferring fundamental black hole properties such as the spin. Early results of X-ray reverberations showed support for such a simple picture, though wind-reverberation models have also been shown to explain the observed delays. Here, we analyze new and old XMM-Newton observations of the variable Seyfert-1 galaxy NGC 5506 to test these models. The source shows an emission line feature around 6.7 keV that is delayed relative to harder and softer energ…
Unveiling the X-ray/UV properties of disk winds in active galactic nuclei using broad and mini-broad absorption line quasars
The ANITA balloon experiment was designed to detect radio signals initiated by neutrinos and cosmic ray air showers. These signals are typically discriminated by the polarization and phase inversions of the radio signal. The reflected signal from cosmic rays suffer phase inversion compared to a direct tau neutrino event. In this paper we study sub-surface reflection, which can occur without phase inversion, in the context of the two anomalous up-going events reported by ANITA. We find that subsurface layers and firn density inversions may plausibly account for the events, while ice fabric laye…
We present results from the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) observations of the new black hole X-ray binary candidate MAXI J1631-479 at two epochs during its 2018-2019 outburst, which caught the source in a disk dominant state and a power-law dominant state. Strong relativistic disk reflection features are clearly detected, displaying significant variations in the shape and strength of the broad iron emission line between the two states. Spectral modeling of the reflection spectra reveals that the inner radius of the optically-thick accretion disk evolves from $<1.9$ $r_{\rm g}$…
We present a generally applicable formalism for modeling the emission, absorption, reflection, and reprocessing of radiation by moving plasma streams close to a Kerr Black hole. The formalism can be used to investigate the observational signatures of a wide range of phenomena, including: (i) the reflection of coronal X-ray radiation off plasma plunging from the inner edge of a black hole accretion disk towards the black hole; (ii) the reflection of coronal X-ray emission off the upper layers of a geometrically thick accretion flow; (iii) the illumination of the accretion disk by a corona movin…
The analysis of a series of seven observations of the nearby ($z=0.0809$) QSO, PG 1211+143, taken with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on-board XMM-Newton in 2014, are presented. The high resolution soft X-ray spectrum, with a total exposure exceeding 600 ks, shows a series of blue-shifted absorption lines, from the He and H-like transitions of N, O and Ne, as well as from L-shell Fe. The strongest absorption lines are all systematically blue-shifted by $-0.06c$, originating in two absorption zones, from low and high ionization gas. Both zones are variable on timescales of days, with…
