We consider the full-duplex (FD) two-way amplify-and-forward relay system with imperfect cancelation of loopback self-interference (SI) and investigate joint design of relay and receive beamforming for minimizing the mean square error under a relay transmit power constraint. Due to loopback channel estimation error and limitation of analog-to-digital converter, the loopback SI cannot be completely canceled. Multiple antennas at the relay can help loopback SI suppression but beamforming is required to balance between the residual SI suppression and the desired signal transmission. Moreover, the relay beamforming matrix should be updated every time slot because the residual SI in the previous time slot is amplified by the current beamforming matrix and added to the received signals from the two sources in the current time slot. We derive the optimally balanced relay beamforming and receive beamforming matrices in closed form based on minimum mean square error, taking into account the propagation of the residual loopback SI from the first to the current time slot. We also propose beamforming design using only the channels of the m latest time slots, not from the first time slot. Based on our numerical results, we also identify when FD is beneficial and propose selection between FD and half-duplex according to signal-to-noise ratio and interference-to-noise ratio.
In this paper multi-antenna half-duplex and full-duplex relaying are compared from the perspective of achievable rates. Full-duplexing operation requires additional resources at the relay such as antennas and RF chains for self-interference cancellation. Using a practical model for the residual self-interference, full-duplex achievable rates and degrees of freedom are computed for the cases for which the relay has the same number of antennas or the same number of RF chains as in the half-duplex case, and compared with their half-duplex counterparts. It is shown that power scaling at the relay …
We show that the broadcast capacity of an infinite-depth tree-structured network of error-free half-duplex-constrained relays can be achieved using constrained coding at the source and symbol forwarding at the relays.
In this paper, we propose a full-duplex relay (FDR) based on a zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) for a multiuser MIMO relay system. The ZFBF is employed at the base station to suppress both the self-interference of the relay and the multiuser interference at the same time. Numerical results show that the proposed FDR can enhance the sum rate performance as compared to the half-duplex relay (HDR), if sufficient isolation between the transmit and receive antennas is ensured at the relay.
Virtual full-duplex (VFD) is a powerful solution to compensate the rate loss of half-duplex relaying without the need to full-duplex capable nodes. Inter-relay interference (IRI) challenges the operation of VFD relaying systems. Recently, improper signaling is employed at both relays of the VFD to mitigate the IRI by imposing the same signal characteristics for both relays. To further boost the achievable rate performance, asymmetric time sharing VFD relaying system is adopted with different improper signals at the half-duplex relays. The joint tuning of the three design parameters improves th…
We derive the capacity of the state-dependent half-duplex relay channel without source-destination link. The output of the state-dependent half-duplex relay channel depends on the randomly varying channel states of the source-relay and relay-destination links, which are known causally at all three nodes. For this channel, we prove a converse and show the achievability of the capacity based on a buffer-aided relaying protocol with adaptive link selection. This protocol chooses in each times slot one codeword to be transmitted over either the source-relay or the relay-destination channel dependi…
This work proposes an analytical framework to study how relay selection strategies perform in half- and full-duplex deployments by combining renewal theory and stochastic geometry. Specifically, we assume that the network nodes -- operating in either half- or full-duplex mode -- are scattered according to a two-dimensional homogeneous Poisson point process to compute the relay selection cost by using a semi-Markov process. Our results show: ($i$) fixed relay outperforms the reactive option in either cases, ($ii$) the performance of both reactive and fixed relay strategies depends on the self-i…
We propose a novel mode of operation for Amplify-and-Forward relays in which the spectra of the relay input and output signals partially overlap. This partial-duplex relaying mode encompasses half-duplex and full-duplex as particular cases. By viewing the partial-duplex relay as a bandwidth-preserving Linear Periodic Time-Varying system, an analysis of the spectral efficiency in the presence of self-interference is developed. In contrast with previous works, self-interference is regarded as a useful information-bearing component rather than simply assimilated to noise. This approach reveals th…
This letter analyzes and compares the performance of full-duplex relaying (FDR) and half-duplex relaying (HDR) for ultra-reliable short-packet communications. Specifically, we derive both approximate and asymptotic closed-form expressions of the block error rate (BLER) for FDR and HDR using short packets with finite blocklength codes. We define and attain a closed-form expression of a critical BLER, which can be used to efficiently determine the optimal duplex mode for ultra-reliable low latency communication scenarios. Our results unveil that FDR is more appealing to the system with relativel…
We consider "virtual" full-duplex relaying by means of half-duplex relays. In this configuration, each relay stage in a multi-hop relaying network is formed by at least two relays, used alternatively in transmit and receive modes, such that while one relay transmits its signal to the next stage, the other relay receives a signal from the previous stage. With such a pipelined scheme, the source is active and sends a new information message in each time slot. We consider the achievable rates for different coding schemes and compare them with a cut-set upper bound, which is tight in certain condi…
In this paper, we investigate the two-hop full-duplex (FD) relay channel with self-interference and fading, which is comprised of a source, an FD relay, and a destination, where a direct source-destination link does not exist and the FD relay is impaired by self-interference. For this channel, we propose three buffer-aided relaying schemes with adaptive reception-transmission at the FD relay for the cases when the source and the relay both perform adaptive-power allocation, fixed-power allocation, and fixed-rate transmission, respectively. The proposed buffer-aided relaying schemes significant…
In this paper we explore the use of full-duplex radio to improve the spectrum efficiency in a two-way relay channel where two sources exchange information through an multi-antenna relay, and all nodes work in the full-duplex mode. The full-duplex operation can reduce the overall communication to only one phase but suffers from the self-interference. Instead of purely suppressing the self-interference, we aim to maximize the end-to-end performance by jointly optimizing the beamforming matrix at the relay which uses the amplify-and-forward protocol as well as the power control at the sources. To…
We consider two-way amplify and forward relaying, where multiple full-duplex user pairs exchange information via a shared full-duplex massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay. We derive closed-form lower bound for the spectral efficiency with zero-forcing processing at the relay, by using minimum mean squared error channel estimation. The zero-forcing lower bound for the system model considered herein, which is valid for arbitrary number of antennas, is not yet derived in the massive MIMO relaying literature. We numerically demonstrate the accuracy of the derived lower bound and the…
A discrete memoryless half-duplex relay channel is constructed from a broadcast channel from the source to the relay and destination and a multiple access channel from the source and relay to the destination. When the relay listens, the channel operates in the broadcast mode. The channel switches to the multiple access mode when the relay transmits. If the broadcast component channel is physically degraded, the half-duplex relay channel will also be referred to as physically degraded. The capacity of this degraded half-duplex relay channel is examined. It is shown that the block Markov coding …
In this letter, we propose a joint transmission mode and transmit/receive (Tx/Rx) antenna configuration scheme referred to as X-duplex in the relay network with one source, one amplify-and-forward (AF) relay and one destination. The relay is equipped with two antennas, each of which is capable of reception and transmission. In the proposed scheme, the relay adaptively selects its Tx and Rx antenna, operating in either full-duplex (FD) or half-duplex (HD) mode. The proposed scheme is based on minimizing the symbol error rate (SER) of the relay system. The asymptotic expressions of the cumulativ…
The hybrid half-duplex/full-duplex (HD/FD) relaying scheme is an effective paradigm to overcome the negative effects of the self-interference incurred by the full-duplex (FD) mode. However, traditional hybrid HD/FD scheme does not consider the diversity gain incurred by the multiple antennas of the FD node when the system works in the HD mode, leading to the waste of the system resources. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid HD/FD relaying scheme, which utilizes both the antennas of the FD relay node for reception and transmission when the system works in the HD mode. With multiple antennas,…
We show that the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff of a half-duplex single-relay channel with identically distributed Rayleigh fading channel gains meets the 2 by 1 MISO bound. We generalize the result to the case when there are N non-interfering relays and show that the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff is equal to the N + 1 by 1 MISO bound.
This work focuses on studying the half-duplex (HD) relaying in the Multiple Access Relay Channel (MARC) and the Compound Multiple Access Channel with a Relay (cMACr). A generalized Quantize-and-Forward (GQF) has been proposed to establish the achievable rate regions. Such scheme is developed based on the variation of the Quantize-and-Forward (QF) scheme and single block with two slots coding structure. The results in this paper can also be considered as a significant extension of the achievable rate region of Half-Duplex Relay Channel (HDRC). Furthermore, the rate regions based on GQF scheme i…
In this work, we investigate the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of the multiple-antenna (MIMO) static half-duplex relay channel. A general expression is derived for the DMT upper bound, which can be achieved by a compress-and-forward protocol at the relay, under certain assumptions. The DMT expression is given as the solution of a minimization problem in general, and an explicit expression is found when the relay channel is symmetric in terms of number of antennas, i.e. the source and the destination have n antennas each, and the relay has m antennas. It is observed that the static half…
In this paper, a multi-antenna assisted virtual full-duplex (FD) relaying with reliability-aware iterative decoding at destination node is proposed to improve system spectral efficiency and reliability. This scheme enables two half-duplex relay nodes, mimicked as FD relaying, to alternatively serve as transmitter and receiver to relay their decoded data signals regardless the decoding errors, meanwhile, cancel the inter-relay interference with QR-decomposition. Then, by deploying the reliability-aware iterative detection/decoding process, destination node can efficiently mitigate inter-frame i…
This study investigates wireless information and energy transfer for dual-hop amplify-and-forward full-duplex relaying systems. By forming energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem into a concave fractional program of transmission power, three relay control schemes are separately designed to enable energy harvesting and full-duplex information relaying. With Rician fading modeled residual self-interference channel, analytical expressions of outage probability and ergodic capacity are presented for the maximum relay, signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) relay, and target relay. It h…
In a bi-directional relay channel, two nodes wish to exchange independent messages over a shared wireless half-duplex channel with the help of relays. Recent work has considered information theoretic limits of the bi-directional relay channel with a single relay. In this work we consider bi-directional relaying with multiple relays. We derive achievable rate regions and outer bounds for half-duplex protocols with multiple decode and forward relays and compare these to the same protocols with amplify and forward relays in an additive white Gaussian noise channel. We consider three novel classes…
We consider two-way amplify and forward relaying, where multiple full-duplex user pairs exchange information via a shared full-duplex massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay. Most of the previous massive MIMO relaying works maximize the spectral efficiency (SE). By contrast, we maximize the non-convex energy efficiency (EE) metric by approximating it as a pseudo-concave problem, which is then solved using the classic Dinkelbach approach. We also maximize the EE of the least energy-efficient user {relying} on the max-min approach. For solving these optimization problems, we derive c…
This paper proposes a jointly cooperative relay and jamming protocol based on full-duplex (FD) capable relay to increase the source-destination secrecy rate in the presence of different types of eavesdroppers. In this so called \textit{FD-Relay with jamming (FDJ)} protocol, the FD-Relay, first, simultaneously receives data and sends jamming to the eavesdropper, and, then, forwards the data, while the source jams the eavesdropper. Achievable secrecy rates of the proposed FDJ in presence of different eavesdropper types and self-interference (SI) are derived and compared with those of the traditi…
A full-duplex two-way relay channel with multiple antennas is considered. For this three-node network, the beamforming design needs to suppress self-interference. While a traditional way is to apply zero-forcing for self-interference mitigation, it may harm the desired signals. In this paper, a design which reserves a fraction of self-interference is proposed by solving a quality-of-service constrained beamforming design problem. Since the problem is challenging due to the loop self-interference, a convergence-guaranteed alternating optimization algorithm is proposed to jointly design the rela…
In the half-duplex single relay selection network, comprised of a source, $M$ half-duplex relays, and a destination, only one relay is active at any given time, i.e., only one relay receives or transmits, and the other relays are inactive, i.e., they do not receive nor transmit. The capacity of this network, when all links are affected by independent slow time-continuous fading and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), is still unknown, and only achievable average rates have been reported in the literature so far. In this paper, we present new achievable average rates for this network which ar…
Full-duplex (FD) communication has received great interest in recent years due to the potential of doubling the spectral efficiency. However, how to alleviate the detrimental effects of the residual self-interference (RSI) incurred by the FD mode is still a challenging problem. In this paper, focusing on the statistical throughput maximization, we propose an optimal hybrid FD/half-duplex (HD) scheme for the one-way FD buffer aided relay system. To solve this problem, we divide the system into four different transmission modes and formulate the problem as a binary integer programming problem. B…
In this work, we analyze the performance of full-duplex relay selection (FDRS) in spectrum-sharing networks. Contrary to half-duplex relaying, full-duplex relaying (FDR) enables simultaneous listening/forwarding at the secondary relay(s), thereby allowing for a higher spectral efficiency. However, since the source and relay simultaneously transmit in FDR, their superimposed signal at the primary receiver should now satisfy the existing interference constraint, which can considerably limit the secondary network throughput. In this regard, relay selection can offer an adequate solution to boost …
The diversity-multiplexing tradeoff of the dynamic decode-and-forward protocol is characterized for the half-duplex three-terminal (m,k,n)-relay channel where the source, relay and the destination terminals have m, k and n antennas, respectively. It is obtained as a solution to a simple, two-variable, convex optimization problem and this problem is solved in closed form for special classes of relay channels, namely, the (1,k,1) relay channel, the (n,1,n) relay channel and the (2,k,2) relay channel. Moreover, the tradeoff curves for a certain class of relay channels, such as the (m,k,n>k) chann…
In this paper, we consider a full-duplex (FD) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay system and optimize its power allocation and relay location to minimize the system symbol error rate (SER). We first derive the asymptotic expressions of the outage probability and SER performance by taking into account the residual self interference (RSI) in FD systems. We then formulate the optimization problem based on the minimal SER criterion. Analytical and numerical results show that optimized relay location and power allocation can greatly improve system SER performance, and the performance floor caused by the…
Scalar Quantize & Forward (QF) schemes are studied for the Two-Way Relay Channel. Different QF approaches are compared in terms of rates as well as relay and decoder complexity. A coding scheme not requiring Slepian-Wolf coding at the relay is proposed and properties of the corresponding sum-rate optimization problem are presented. A numerical scheme similar to the Blahut-Arimoto algorithm is derived that guides optimized quantizer design. The results are supported by simulations.
In this paper, we study virtual full-duplex (FD) buffer-aided relaying to recover the loss of multiplexing gain caused by half-duplex (HD) relaying in a multiple relay network, where each relay is equipped with a buffer and multiple antennas, through joint opportunistic relay selection (RS) and beamforming (BF) design. The main idea of virtual FD buffer-aided relaying is that the source and one of the relays simultaneously transmit their own information to another relay and the destination, respectively. In such networks, inter-relay interference (IRI) is a crucial problem which has to be reso…
In this paper we present several strategies for multiple relay networks which are constrained by a half-duplex operation, i. e., each node either transmits or receives on a particular resource. Using the discrete memoryless multiple relay channel we present achievable rates for a multilevel partial decode-and-forward approach which generalizes previous results presented by Kramer and Khojastepour et al.. Furthermore, we derive a compress-and-forward approach using a regular encoding scheme which simplifies the encoding and decoding scheme and improves the achievable rates in general. Finally, …
In order to satisfy the delay requirements of telecommunication systems, in this paper, we present a cooperative network with the short packet transmission in the Rayleigh fading channel. The desired relay can be implemented as a two-way half-duplex (HD) or a two-way full-duplex (FD). Also, for more accurate satisfaction and reduction of communication delays, sending and receiving with short packets is considered. Effective capacity appropriately measures the transmission rate under the delay constraint. Therefore, it is considered as a performance evaluation criterion here. With a two-way rel…
We consider a dual-hop full-duplex relaying system, where the energy constrained relay node is powered by radio frequency signals from the source using the time-switching architecture, both the amplify-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying protocols are studied. Specifically, we provide an analytical characterization of the achievable throughput of three different communication modes, namely, instantaneous transmission, delay-constrained transmission, and delay tolerant transmission. In addition, the optimal time split is studied for different transmission modes. Our results reveal that,…
In this paper, protocols for the half-duplex relay channel are introduced and performance limits are analyzed. Relay nodes underly an orthogonality constraint, which prohibits simultaneous receiving and transmitting on the same time-frequency resource. Based upon this practical consideration, different protocols are discussed and evaluated using a Gaussian system model. For the considered scenarios compress-and-forward based protocols dominate for a wide range of parameters decode-and-forward protocols. In this paper, a protocol with one compress-and-forward and one decode-and-forward based re…
A multi-hop relay channel with multiple antenna terminals in a quasi-static slow fading environment is considered. For both full-duplex and half-duplex relays the fundamental diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) is analyzed. It is shown that, while decode-and-forward (DF) relaying achieves the optimal DMT in the full-duplex relay scenario, the dynamic decode-and-forward (DDF) protocol is needed to achieve the optimal DMT if the relay is constrained to half-duplex operation. For the latter case, static protocols are considered as well, and the corresponding achievable DMT performance is charac…
This study investigates the problem of communication for a network composed of two half-duplex parallel relays with additive white Gaussian noise. Two protocols, i.e., \emph{Simultaneous} and \emph{Successive} relaying, associated with two possible relay orderings are proposed. The simultaneous relaying protocol is based on \emph{Dynamic Decode and Forward (DDF)} scheme. For the successive relaying protocol: (i) a \emph{Non-Cooperative} scheme based on the \emph{Dirty Paper Coding (DPC)}, and (ii) a \emph{Cooperative} scheme based on the \emph{Block Markov Encoding (BME)} are considered. Furth…
We consider a full-duplex decode-and-forward system, where the wirelessly powered relay employs the time-switching protocol to receive power from the source and then transmit information to the destination. It is assumed that the relay node is equipped with two sets of antennas to enable full-duplex communications. Three different interference mitigation schemes are studied, namely, 1) optimal 2) zero-forcing and 3) maximum ratio combining/maximum ratio transmission. We develop new outage probability expressions to investigate delay-constrained transmission throughput of these schemes. Our ana…
Robust transceiver design against unresolvable system uncertainties is of crucial importance for reliable communication. For instance, full-duplex communication suffers from such uncertainties when canceling the self-interference, since the residual self-interference (RSI) remains uncanceled due to imperfect channel knowledge. We consider a MIMO multi-hop system, where the source, the relay and the destination are equipped with multiple antennas. We allow multi-stream beamforming granted by MIMO technique, without restricting the transmissions to single streaming. The relay can operate in eith…
In-band full-duplex transmission allows a relay station to theoretically double its spectral efficiency by simultaneously receiving and transmitting in the same frequency band, when compared to the traditional half-duplex or out-of-band full-duplex counterpart. Consequently, the induced self-interference suffered by the relay may reach considerable power levels, which decreases the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in a decode-and-forward (DF) relay, leading to a degradation of the relay performance. This paper presents a technique to cope with the problem of self-interference in …
In a $K$-pair-user two-way interference channel (TWIC), $2K$ messages and $2K$ transmitters/receivers form a $K$-user IC in the forward direction ($K$ messages) and another $K$-user IC in the backward direction which operate in full-duplex mode. All nodes may interact, or adapt inputs to past received signals. We derive a new outer bound to demonstrate that the optimal degrees of freedom (DoF, also known as the multiplexing gain) is $K$: full-duplex operation doubles the DoF, but interaction does not further increase the DoF. We next characterize the DoF of the $K$-pair-user TWIC with a MIMO, …
This paper considers Gaussian half-duplex diamond $n$-relay networks, where a source communicates with a destination by hopping information through one layer of $n$ non-communicating relays that operate in half-duplex. The main focus consists of investigating the following question: What is the contribution of a single relay on the approximate capacity of the entire network? In particular, approximate capacity refers to a quantity that approximates the Shannon capacity within an additive gap which only depends on $n$, and is independent of the channel parameters. This paper answers the above q…
In this work, we consider a dual-hop, decode-and-forward network where the relay can operate in full- duplex (FD) or half-duplex (HD) mode. We model the residual self-interference as an additive Gaussian noise with variance proportional to the relay transmit power, and we assume a Gaussian input distribution at the source. Unlike previous work, we assume that the source is only aware of the transmit power distribution adopted by the relay over a given time horizon, but not of the symbols that the relay is currently transmitting. This assumption better reflects the practical situation where the…
In this paper, we deal with the performance analysis of full-duplex relaying in decode-&-forward cooperative networks with multiple-antenna terminals. More specifically, by analyzing the end-to-end statistics, we derive the accurate closed-form expressions of the end-to-end outage probability for both transmit and receive ZFBF scheme over Rayleigh fading environments. Some selected results show some interesting observations useful for system designers. Specifically, we observe that the outage performance can be improved by adopting the joint ZF-based precoding with different antenna configurat…
This paper proposes a virtual harvest-transmit model and a harvest-transmit-store model for amplify-and-forward full-duplex relay (FDR) networks with power splitting-based simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. The relay node employs a battery group consisting of two rechargeable batteries. By switching periodically between two batteries for charging and discharging in two consecutive time slots of each transmission block, all the harvested energy in each block has been applied for full duplex transmission in the virtual harvest-transmit model. By employing energy scheduling, th…
We consider a multi-pair two-way amplify-and-forward massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) hybrid relay with MIMO user-pairs. A hybrid relay has lesser number of radio frequency (RF) chains than the antennas, which significantly reduces the implementation cost. We employ block-diagonalization-based baseband processing at the hybrid relay to cancel the inter user-pair interference and equal-gain-combining-based RF processing to maximize the beamforming gain. We also use an algebraic norm maximizing relay transmit strategy to maximize the spectral efficiency (SE) of each user-pair. We numerica…
A Gaussian interference channel (IC) aided by a half-duplex relay is considered, in which the relay receives and transmits in an orthogonal band with respect to the IC. The system thus consists of two parallel channels, the IC and the channel over which the relay is active, which is referred to as Out-of-Band Relay Channel (OBRC). The OBRC is operated by separating a multiple access phase from the sources to the relay and a broadcast phase from the relay to the destinations. Conditions under which the optimal operation, in terms of the sum-capacity, entails either signal relaying and/or interf…
This letter proposes a novel hybrid half-/full-duplex relaying scheme to enhance the relay channel security. A source node (Alice) communicates with her destination node (Bob) in the presence of a buffer-aided full-duplex relay node (Rooney) and a potential eavesdropper (Eve). Rooney adopts two different relaying strategies, namely randomize-and-forward and decode-and-forward relaying strategies, to improve the security of the legitimate system. In the first relaying strategy, Rooney uses a codebook different from that used at Alice. In the second relaying strategy, Rooney and Alice use the sa…
This paper is on relay selection in uplink of an in-band full-duplex (IBFD) cooperative cellular network. Assuming an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) cellular network, we develop a relay selection and resource allocation algorithm for this network. The relay selection algorithms select the best relay based on distance between users and signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) that operate in amplify and forward (AF) mode. The optimization problem allocates the optimum subcarriers and powers to all users to maximize the average sum-rate of the network. In addition, t…
Despite encouraging advances in the design of relay codes, several important challenges remain. Many of the existing LDPC relay codes are tightly optimized for fixed channel conditions and not easily adapted without extensive re-optimization of the code. Some have high encoding complexity and some need long block lengths to approach capacity. This paper presents a high-performance protograph-based LDPC coding scheme for the half-duplex relay channel that addresses simultaneously several important issues: structured coding that permits easy design, low encoding complexity, embedded structure fo…
This paper investigates power splitting for full-duplex relay networks with wireless information and energy transfer. By applying power splitting as a relay transceiver architecture, the full duplex information relaying can be powered by energy harvested from the source-emitted radio frequency signal. In order to minimize outage probability, power splitting ratios have been dynamically optimized according to full channel state information (CSI) and partial CSI, respectively. Under strong loop interference, the proposed full CSI-based and partial CSI-based power splitting schemes achieve the be…
In this work, energy-efficient cooperative protocols are studied for full-duplex relaying (FDR) with loopback interference. In these protocols, relay assistance is only sought under certain conditions on the different link outages to ensure effective cooperation. Recently, an energy-efficient selective decode-and-forward protocol was proposed for FDR, and was shown to outperform existing schemes in terms of outage. Here, we propose an incremental selective decode-and-forward protocol that offers additional power savings, while keeping the same outage performance. We compare the performance of …
We assume a full-duplex (FD) cooperative network subject to hostile attacks and undergoing composite fading channels. We focus on two scenarios: \textit{a)} the transmitter has full CSI, for which we derive closed-form expressions for the \textit{average secrecy rate}; and \textit{b)} the transmitter only knows the CSI of the legitimate nodes, for which we obtain closed-form expressions for the \textit{secrecy outage probability}. We show that secure FD relaying is feasible, even under strong self-interference and in the presence of sophisticated multiple antenna eavesdropper.
In this paper, a symbol-level selective transmission for full-duplex (FD) relaying networks is proposed to mitigate error propagation effects and improve system spectral efficiency. The idea is to allow the FD relay node to predict the correctly decoded symbols of each frame, based on the generalized square deviation method, and discard the erroneously decoded symbols, resulting in fewer errors being forwarded to the destination node. Using the capability for simultaneous transmission and reception at the FD relay node, our proposed strategy can improve the transmission efficiency without extr…
In this paper, we propose a full-duplex orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) device-to-device (D2D) system in two-hop networks, where multiple full-duplex decode-and-forward (DF) relays assist the transmission from D2D user equipment (DUE) transmitter to DUE receiver. By such a transmission mechanism, the signal transmitted by the DUE transmitter does not need to go through a base station (BS). Meanwhile, due to the adoption of underlay D2D communication protocol, power control mechanisms are thereby necessary to be applied to mitigate the interference to conventional cellular com…
This paper studies networks with N half-duplex relays assisting the communication between a source and a destination. In ISIT'12 Brahma, Özgür and Fragouli conjectured that in Gaussian half-duplex diamond networks (i.e., without a direct link between the source and the destination, and with N non-interfering relays) an approximately optimal relay scheduling policy (i.e., achieving the cut-set upper bound to within a constant gap) has at most N+1 active states (i.e., at most N+1 out of the $2^N$ possible relay listen-transmit states have a strictly positive probability). Such relay scheduling p…
In ISIT'12 Brahma, Özgür and Fragouli conjectured that in a half-duplex diamond relay network (a Gaussian noise network without a direct source-destination link and with $N$ non-interfering relays) an approximately optimal relay scheduling (achieving the cut-set upper bound to within a constant gap uniformly over all channel gains) exists with at most $N+1$ active states (only $N+1$ out of the $2^N$ possible relay listen-transmit configurations have a strictly positive probability). Such relay scheduling policies are said to be simple. In ITW'13 we conjectured that simple relay policies are op…
We investigate physical-layer security of the full-duplex (FD) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay channel. We provide a new perspective on the problem and show that the processing time (delay) at the relay can be exploited to improve the system's security. We show that the FD AF relay channel can be seen as an intersymbol-interference (ISI) channel, hence, the discrete-Fourier transform (DFT) can be used for data modulation and demodulation to convert the frequency-selective channel into flat-fading channel per sub-channel/sub-carrier. By exploiting the fact that the channel memory needs to be cle…
In this paper we present regular bilayer LDPC convolutional codes for half-duplex relay channels. For the binary erasure relay channel, we prove that the proposed code construction achieves the capacities for the source-relay link and the source-destination link provided that the channel conditions are known when designing the code. Meanwhile, this code enables the highest transmission rate with decode-and-forward relaying. In addition, its regular degree distributions can easily be computed from the channel parameters, which significantly simplifies the code optimization. Numerical results ar…
