The concept of scattering coefficients has played a pivotal role in a broad range of inverse scattering and imaging problems in acoustic, and electromagnetic media. In view of their promising applications in inverse problems related to mathematical imaging and elastic cloaking, the notion of elastic scattering coefficients of an inclusion is presented from the perspective of boundary layer potentials and a few properties are discussed. A reconstruction algorithm is developed and analyzed for extracting the elastic scattering coefficients from multi-static response measurements of the scattered field in order to cater to inverse scattering problems. The decay rate, stability and error analyses, and the estimate of maximal resolving order in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio are discussed. Moreover, scattering-coefficients-vanishing structures are designed and their utility for enhancement of nearly elastic cloaking is elucidated.
This paper is concerned with the elastic near cloaking for the Lamé system in three-dimensions using the notion of elastic scattering coefficients (ESC). Accordingly, the ESC of arbitrary three-dimensional objects are designed and some of their properties are discussed using elements of the elastic layer potential theory. Then, near-cloaking structures, coined as ESC-vanishing-structures, are constructed for the elastic cloaking at a fixed frequency or a band of frequencies. These multi-layered structures are designed so that their first few significant ESC vanish ahead of transformation-elast…
We discuss the concept of cloaking for elastic impedance tomography, in which, we seek information on the elasticity tensor of an elastic medium from the knowledge of measurements on its boundary. We derive some theoretical results illustrated by some numerical simulations.
In this work, we develop a general mathematical framework on regularized approximate cloaking of elastic waves governed by the Lamé system via the approach of transformation elastodynamics. Our study is rather comprehensive. We first provide a rigorous justification of the transformation elastodynamics. Based on the blow-up-a-point construction, elastic material tensors for a perfect cloak are derived and shown to possess singularities. In order to avoid the singular structure, we propose to regularize the blow-up-a-point construction to be the blow-up-a-small-region construction. However, it …
The regularized near-cloak via the transformation optics approach in the time-harmonic electromagnetic scattering is considered. This work extends the existing studies mainly in two aspects. First, it presents a near-cloak construction by incorporating a much more general conducting layer between the cloaked and cloaking regions. This might be of significant practical importance when production fluctuations occur. Second, it allows the cloaked contents to be both passive and active with an applied current inside. In assessing the near-cloaking performance, comprehensive and sharp estimates are…
A perturbation approach is used for analysis of a near-cloak in shielding a finite scatterer from an incident flexural wave. The effect of the boundary conditions on the interior surface of the cloaking layer is analysed in detail, based on the explicit analytical solutions of a wave propagation problem for a membrane as well as a Kirchhoff flexural plate. It is shown that the Dirichlet boundary condition on the interior contour of the cloak significantly reduces the cloaking action in the membrane case, and it also makes cloaking impossible for flexural waves in a Kirchhoff plate.
We formulate the problems of nonlinear and linear elastodynamics transformation cloaking in a geometric framework. It is noted that a cloaking transformation is neither a spatial nor a referential change of frame (coordinates); a cloaking transformation maps the boundary-value problem of an isotropic and homogeneous elastic body (virtual problem) to that of an anisotropic and inhomogeneous elastic body with a hole surrounded by a cloak that is to be designed (physical problem). The virtual body has a desired mechanical response while the physical body is designed to mimic the same response out…
The approximate cloaking is investigated for time-harmonic Maxwell's equations via the approach of transformation optics. The problem is reduced to certain boundary effect estimates due to an inhomogeneous electromagnetic inclusion with an asymptotically small support but an arbitrary content enclosed by a thin high-conducting layer. Sharp estimates are established in terms of the asymptotic parameter, which are independent of the material tensors of the small electromagnetic inclusion. The result implies that the `blow-up-a-small-region' construction via the transformation optics approach yie…
An active elastodynamic cloak destructively interferes with an incident time harmonic in-plane (coupled compressional/shear) elastic wave to produce zero total elastic field over a finite spatial region. A method is described which explicitly predicts the source amplitudes of the active field. For a given number of sources and their positions in two dimensions it is shown that the multipole amplitudes can be expressed as infinite sums of the coefficients of the incident wave decomposed into regular Bessel functions. Importantly, the active field generated by the sources vanishes in the far-fie…
It is known that design of elastic cloaks is much more challenging than the design idea for acoustic cloaks, cloaks of electromagnetic waves or scalar problems of anti-plane shear. In this paper, we address fully the fourth-order problem and develop a model of a broadband invisibility cloak for channelling flexural waves in thin plates around finite inclusions. We also discuss an option to employ efficiently an elastic pre-stress and body forces to achieve such a result. An asymptotic derivation provides a rigorous link between the model in question and elastic wave propagation in thin solids.…
This paper is concerned with the theoretical study of plasmonic resonances for linear elasticity governed by the Lamé system in $\mathbb{R}^3$, and their application for cloaking due to anomalous localized resonances. We derive a very general and novel class of elastic structures that can induce plasmonic resonances. It is shown that if either one of the two convexity conditions on the Lamé parameters is broken, then we can construct certain plasmon structures that induce resonances. This significantly extends the relevant existing studies in the literature where the violation of both convexit…
Given the flexibility of choosing negative elastic parameters, we construct material structures that can induce two resonance phenomena, referred to as the elastodynamical resonances. They mimic the emerging plasmon/polariton resonance and anomalous localized resonance in optics for subwavelength particles. However, we study the peculiar resonance phenomena for linear elasticity beyond the subwavelength regime. It is shown that the resonance behaviours possess distinct characters, with some similar to the subwavelength resonances, but some sharply different due to the frequency effect. It is p…
This paper is concerned with the invisibility cloaking in electromagnetic wave scattering from a new perspective. We are especially interested in achieving the invisibility cloaking by completely regular and isotropic mediums. Our study is based on an interior transmission eigenvalue problem. We propose a cloaking scheme that takes a three-layer structure including a cloaked region, a lossy layer and a cloaking shell. The target medium in the cloaked region can be arbitrary but regular, whereas the mediums in the lossy layer and the cloaking shell are both regular and isotropic. We establish t…
In this paper, we consider two regularized transformation-optics cloaking schemes for electromagnetic (EM) waves. Both schemes are based on the blowup construction with the generating sets being, respectively, a generic curve and a planar subset. We derive sharp asymptotic estimates in assessing the cloaking performances of the two constructions in terms of the regularization parameters and the geometries of the cloaking devices. The first construction yields an approximate full-cloak, whereas the second construction yields an approximate partial-cloak. Moreover, by incorporating properly chos…
This paper is concerned with the invisibility cloaking in acoustic wave scattering from a new perspective. We are especially interested in achieving the invisibility cloaking by completely regular and isotropic mediums. It is shown that an interior transmission eigenvalue problem arises in our study, which is the one considered theoretically in \cite{CCH}. Based on such an observation, we propose a cloaking scheme that takes a three-layer structure including a cloaked region, a lossy layer and a cloaking shell. The target medium in the cloaked region can be arbitrary but regular, whereas the m…
Recently, it was shown that an infinite perfectly conducting (PEC) cylinder can be nearly perfectly cloaked from normally incident electromagnetic waves using a single-layer homogeneous dielectric cladding. Here we study the electromagnetic response of such structures with the goal to understand the main mechanisms underpinning this cloaking phenomenon. We introduce a simple model of the cloaked PEC cylinder, replacing it by an omnidirectional electric-line scatterer and a bipolar magnetic one; accordingly, the far field is determined in a compact closed form. The analysis of the results shows…
We show that for n billiard particles on the line there exist three open sets in the product of phase space and the space of their masses, such that these particles exhibit exactly n-1, n over 2 respectively n+1 over 3 collisions. These open sets intersect any neighborhood of the diagonal in mass space.
In this paper, we provide the first rigorous derivation of hydrodynamic equations from the Boltzmann equation for inelastic hard spheres with small inelasticity. The hydrodynamic system that we obtain is an incompressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier system with self-consistent forcing terms and is thus the first hydrodynamic system that properly describes rapid granular flows. To do that, we write our Boltzmann equation in nondimensional form introducing the dimensionless Knudsen number which is intended to tend to 0. The difficulties are then manyfold, the first one coming from the fact that the or…
