We discuss different models for the spin structure of the nonperturbative pomeron: scalar, vector, and rank-2 symmetric tensor. The ratio of single-helicity-flip to helicity-conserving amplitudes in polarised high-energy proton-proton elastic scattering, known as the complex r_5 parameter, is calculated for these models. We compare our results to experimental data from the STAR experiment. We show that the spin-0 (scalar) pomeron model is clearly excluded by the data, while the vector pomeron is inconsistent with the rules of quantum field theory. The tensor pomeron is found to be perfectly consistent with the STAR data.
We discuss the reaction $e p \to e \tilde{p} X$ in the one-photon exchange approximation, where it is in essence the reaction $γ^{*} p \to \tilde{p} X$. A large rapidity gap is required between the particle or particles of the proton remnant $\tilde{p}$ and those of $X$. We define a suitable azimuthal angle $φ$ between a leptonic and a hadronic plane. The dependence of the cross section on $φ$ is given explicitly and can be used to extract cross sections and interference terms for the reaction $γ^{*} p \to \tilde{p} X$ corresponding to the various helicities of the virtual photon $γ^{*}$. The …
A model for elastic scattering of nucleons (and anti-nucleons) based on the quark-diquark representation of the nucleon with springy Pomeron, providing increased real part of the scattering amplitude, is developed. The model predictions are compared with experimental data for the differential elastic cross-sections of nucleons in the energy range from few GeV up to 7 TeV using available databases.
In this work the process of elastic hadron scattering is discussed. In particular, scattering amplitudes for the various Pomeron models are compared. In addition, differential elastic cross section as a function of the scattered proton transverse momentum for unpolarised and polarised protons is presented. Finally, an implementation of the elastic scattering amplitudes into the GenEx Monte Carlo generator is discussed.
The hard pomeron component needed to reproduce small-x data seems to be present in elastic scattering at moderate energy. If this is the case, it is likely that the total cross section at the LHC will be appreciably larger than previously expected.
We assume that the Pomeron is a sum of Regge multipoles, each corresponding to a finite gluon ladder. From a fit to the diffraction cone data of pp- and pbarp- scattering we found that the triple pole is significant for the rise of the ratio sigma_el/sigma_tot at high energies.
We discuss some properties of the Pomeron in high energy elastic hadron-hadron and deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering. A number of issues concerning the nature and the origin of the Pomeron are briefly recalled here. The novelty in this paper resides essentially in its presentation; we strive at discussing all these various issues in the following unifying perspective : it is our contention that the Pomeron is one and the same in all reactions. Various examples will be provided illustrating why we do not believe that one should invoke additional tools to describe the data. For pedagogical…
A brief review on the Dipole Pomeron model is given. The model not only describes data on hadron-hadron interactions, but also allows to describe data on the proton structure function with a $Q^2$ independent intercept. Moreover the chosen Dipole Pomeron has an intercept equal to one and does not violate unitarity limit on the total elastic cross-section.
Elastic production of vector mesons $γ^{*} N\to V N$ is the pomeron-exchange dominated diffractive reaction with much potential of probing the BFKL pomeron. The BFKL pomeron can conveniently be described in terms of the dipole cross section which is a solution of the generalized BFKL equation. In this paper we discuss, how the energy and $Q^{2}$ dependence of elastic production of vector mesons at HERA will allow scanning the dipole cross section as a function of dipole size $r$. We show that determinaton of the intercept of the BFKL pomeron requires measuring the $ρ^{0}$ and $J/Ψ$ production …
The introduction of a hard singularity in fits to total cross sections and to the ratio of real to imaginary parts enables to reproduce perfectly the data for sqrt(s)< 100 GeV using only simple-pole parametrisations, both for the soft and for the hard pomerons.
We introduce a new model of near-forward elastic proton-(anti)proton scattering at high energy based on the modern formulation of Pomeron and Odderon in terms of Wilson lines and generalized TMDs (GTMDs). We compute the helicity-dependent elastic amplitudes $ϕ_{1,2,3,4,5}$ in this model and study their energy dependence from the nonlinear small-$x$ evolution equations. While both Pomeron and Odderon contribute to helicity-flip processes in general, in the forward limit $t=0$ only the double helicity-flip amplitude $ϕ_2$, dominated by the spin-dependent Odderon, survives. This may affect the ex…
In the Bourrely-Soffer-Wu model (BSW) we introduce for the pomeron a new opaqueness in impact parameter space in terms of different quark contributions described by a Fermi-Dirac distribution. In order to check the validity of this assumption we consider $p~p$, $\bar p~p$, and $π^{\pm}~p$ elastic scattering. We emphasize the role of the gluon above the diffraction peak in the differential cross sections. Once these contributions are determined we extend the model to light nuclei elastic reactions like $p~d$, $p~^4\mbox{He}$ and $π^{\pm}~^4\mbox{He}$. The results obtained show a good descriptio…
Dominant contributions of enhanced Pomeron diagrams to elastic hadron-hadron scattering amplitude are re-summed to all orders. The formalism is applied to calculate total hadronic cross sections and elastic scattering slopes. An agreement with earlier results is obtained.
We present a formalism for high energy soft processes, mediated by Pomerons, which embodies pion-loop insertions in the Pomeron trajectory, rescattering effects via a two-channel eikonal and high-mass diffractive dissociation. It describes all the main features of the data throughout the ISR to Tevatron energy interval. We give predictions for soft diffractive phenomena at the LHC energy, and we calculate the different survival probabilities of rapidity gaps which occur in various diffractive processes.
In this talk we report on recent calculation of high energy baryon scattering amplitudes in QCD. Elastic baryon impact factors for two, three and four gluons are presented and their energy evolution is described that incorporates unitarity corrections. We find that the baryon couples directly to the BFKL Pomeron, to the BKP odderon and to a new state, a three-gluon BKP Pomeron. The new state may decay into four gluons with a new 3 -> 4 transition vertex. This vertex defines the transition amplitude of the three-gluon BKP Pomeron state into two BFKL Pomerons.
We show that the data for the total cross section and for the real part of the elastic amplitude indicate the presence of a hard pomeron in pi p and Kp elastic scattering at t=0, compatible with that observed in deep inelastic scattering. We show that such a hard pomeron is also compatible with pp and pbar p data, provided one unitarises it at high energy.
Using the Model of the Stochastic Vacuum many diffractive processes have been calculated by investigating the dipole-dipole scattering at a cm-energy of 20 GeV. In this work we extend the calculation to larger energies and small dipoles. We assume that there are two pomerons, the hard- and the soft-pomeron, which cause the different energy dependence for processes dominated by small or large dipoles. The physical processes are obtained by smearing the dipole-dipole amplitude with wavefunctions. For small dipoles the leading perturbative contribution is taken into account. By that way we can de…
We present a `global' description of the wide variety of high energy elastic and diffractive data that are presently available, particularly from the LHC experiments. The model is based on only one pomeron pole, but includes multi-pomeron interactions and, significantly, includes the transverse momentum dependence of intermediate partons as a function of their rapidity, which provides the rapidity dependence of the multi-pomeron vertices. We give predictions for diffractive observables at LHC energies.
The role of the hard Pomeron (HP) exchanges in the high-energy diffractive interaction of nucleons is explored. It is demonstrated that the HP subdominance at available energies and low transferred momenta is due to the extremely low slope of its Regge trajectory.
In the light of LHC data, we discuss the global description of all high energy elastic and diffractive data, using a one-pomeron model, but including multi-pomeron interactions. The LHC data indicate the need of a $k_t(s)$ behaviour, where $k_t$ is the gluon transverse momentum along the partonic ladder structure which describes the pomeron. We also discuss tensions in the data, as well as the $t$ dependence of the slope of $dσ_{el}/dt$ in the small $t$ domain.
An analysis of the possible contribution of the hard pomeron in elastic hadron scattering at LHC energies is made. It is shown that such a contribution has affected the shape of the differential cross section in the Coulomb-hadron interference region and in the dip region. On the basis of the new High-Energy General Structure (HEGS) model, the possible contributions of the hard pomeron are investigated. The predictions of the model at $8 \ $ TeV are discussed.
We discuss a model which gives a `global' description of the wide variety of high-energy elastic and diffractive data that are presently available, particularly from the LHC experiments. The model is based on only one pomeron pole, but includes multi-pomeron interactions. Significantly, the LHC measurements require that the model includes the transverse momentum dependence of the intermediate partons as a function of their rapidity, which results in a rapidity (or energy) dependence of the multi-pomeron vertices.
The model of elastic scattering amplitudes dominated by the triple (at $t=0$) pomeron pole suggested earlier is modified to confront to existing experimental data on $pp$ and $\bar pp$ total and differential cross sections at $\sqrt{s}\geq 19$ GeV and $|t|\leq 14.2$ GeV$^{2}$ including the newest TOTEM data. Predictions for the future TOTEM measurements at 13 and 14 TeV are given.
We apply the phenomenological Reggeon field theory framework to investigate rapidity gap survival (RGS) probability for diffractive dijet production in proton-proton collisions. In particular, we study in some detail rapidity gap suppression due to elastic rescatterings of intermediate partons in the underlying parton cascades, described by enhanced (Pomeron-Pomeron interaction) diagrams. We demonstrate that such contributions play a subdominant role, compared to the usual, so-called "eikonal", rapidity gap suppression due to elastic rescatterings of constituent partons of the colliding proton…
A simple model for elastic diffractive hadron scattering, reproducing the dip-bump structure is used to analyze PP and $\bar PP$ scattering. The main emphasis is on the delicate and non-trivial dynamics in the dip-bump region, near t=-1 GeV$^2$. The simplicity of the model and the expected smallness of the absorption corrections enables one the control of various contributions to the scattering amplitude, in particular the interplay between the C-even and C-odd components of the amplitude, as well as their relative contribution, changing with s and t. The role of the non-linearity of the Regge…
We review some theoretical ideas concerning diffractive processes. We discuss the Regge Ansatz for the pomeron and the two pomeron model. Then we present the results obtained from nonperturbative QCD for high energy scattering. There we can extract from elastic scattering data the parameters describing the QCD vacuum, in particular the string tension.
The one-to-one connection between the eikonal phase and the ratio of the elastic and total cross section is shown. Based on new experimental data of Collaboration CDF we analyzed intercept and power of the logarithmic growth of the Born and total Pomeron amplitude.
An earlier developed model for vector meson photoproduction, based on a dipole Pomeron exchange, is extended to electroproduction. Universality of the non linear Pomeron trajectory is tested by fitting the model to ZEUS and H1 data as well as to CDF data on $\bar pp$ elastic scattering.
We asses a role of the double helicity-flip amplitudes in small-angle elastic pp-scattering and obtain a new unitary bound for the double helicity-flip amplitude F_2 in elastic pp-scattering at small values of t on the basis of the U-matrix method of the s-channel unitarization.
We consider simple-pole descriptions of soft elastic scattering for pp, pbar p, pi+ p, pi- p, K+ p and K- p. We work at t and s small enough for rescatterings to be neglected, and allow for the presence of a hard pomeron. After building and discussing an exhaustive dataset, we show that simple poles provide an excellent description of the data in the region - 0.5 GeV^2 < t < -0.1 GeV^2, 6 GeV<sqrt(s)< 63 GeV. We show that new form factors have to be used, and get information on the trajectories of the soft and hard pomerons.
This paper serves as a report on the large amount of analysis done in conjunction with the polarized proton program at RHIC. This comprises elastic scattering data of protons on protons in colliding beam or fixed target mode and proton beams on carbon targets. In addition to providing a model for the energy dependence of the analyzing power of elastic scattering needed for proton polarimetry, it also provides some significant information about the spin dependence of dominant Regge poles. Most notably, the data indicates that the Pomeron has a significant spin-flip coupling. This allows the exp…

Recent polarized proton experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory are used as a basis for a model of the energy dependence of the analyzing power of proton-carbon elastic scattering. In addition to their practical value for polarimetry, the results of this analysis give constraints on the size of the Pomeron spin-flip coupling as well as information on the $f_2$ and $ω$ spin-flip couplings.
We discuss a role of the double helicity-flip amplitudes and derive new unitary bounds for these amplitudes in elastic $pp$-scattering at small values of $t$. We show that the usual assumption on the smallness of such amplidudes can be justified only in the shrinking with energy region of small $t$ values.
Elastic scattering amplitudes dominated by the Pomeron singularity which obey the principal unitarity bounds at high energies are constructed and analyzed. Confronting the models of double and triple (at $t=0$) Pomeron pole (supplemented by some terms responsible for the low energy behaviour) with existing experimental data on $pp$ and $\bar pp$ total and differential cross sections at $\sqrt{s}\geq 5$ GeV and $|t|\leq 6$ GeV$^{2}$ we are able to tune the form of the Pomeron singularity. Actually the good agreement with those data is received for both models though the behaviour given by the d…
Non-forward elastic hadron-scattering data are collected and analysed within the Regge approach. Through an analysis of the data in small bins in $t$, we have directly extracted the pomeron trajectory and the hadronic form factors (or reggeon couplings). We found higher values than usually used for the intercept and for the slope of the soft pomeron trajectory. The presence of zeros in $t$ for the effective hadronic form factors is emphasised.
We study the high energy behaviour of elastic scattering amplitudes within the leading logarithm approximation. In particular, we cast the amplitude in a form which allows us to study the internal dynamics of the BFKL Pomeron for general momentum transfer. We demonstrate that the momentum transfer acts as an effective infrared cut-off which ensures that the dominant contribution arises from short distance physics.
The explicit procedures are described for reconstruction of the full set of helicity amplitudes in proton-proton and proton-antiproton elastic scattering. The procedures are based on the derivative relations for the helicity amplitudes in s-channel, on the explicit parametrization of the leading spin non flip amplitudes and crossing - symmetry relations. Asymptotic theorems are used for definition of free parameters in derivative relations. We also study the Odderon influence on the helicity amplitude reconstruction. Reconstruction procedures are valid at extremely wide energy domain and broad…
We consider the main factors which cause the variation of the value of the local slope of the elastic pp cross section B(t)=d[\ln(dσ_el(pp)/dt]/dt with t. Namely, we discuss the role of the pion-loop insertion in the pomeron trajectory, the t-dependence of the pomeron-nucleon coupling and the role of the eikonalization of the proton-proton amplitude in both the one- and two-channel eikonal models.
Central exclusive diffractive (CED) production of meson resonances potentially is a factory producing new particles, in particular a glueball. The produced resonances lie in trajectories with vacuum quantum numbers, essentially on the pomeron trajectory. A tower of resonance recurrences, the production cross section and the resonances widths are predicted. A new feature is the form of the non-linear pomeron trajectory, producing resonances (glueballs) with increasing widths. At LHC energies, in the nearly forward direction the $t$-channel both in elastic, single or double diffraction dissociat…
One of the more interesting developments from recent collider experiments is the finding that hadronic total cross sections as well as elastic cross s ections can be described by the exchange of a "soft Pomeron" pole in the near-forward limit. The most impor tant consequence of Pomeron being a pole is the factorization property. However, due to Pomeron intercept being greater than 1, the extrapolated single diffraction dissociation cross section based on a classical triple-Pomeron formula is too large leading to a potential unitarity violation at Tevatron energies. It is our desire here to exa…
The intercept of the supercritical Pomeron is examined with the use of different forms of the scattering amplitudes of the bare Pomeron. The one-to-one correspondence between the eikonal phase and the ratio of the elastic and total cross section is shown. Based on new experimental data of the CDF Collaboration, the intercept and power of the logarithmic growth of the bare and total Pomeron amplitude are analyzed. It is shown that as a result of the eikonalization procedure, the bare QCD Pomeron becomes compatible with experiment.
We predict pp elastic differential cross sections at LHC at c.m. energy 14 TeV and momentum transfer range |t| = 0 - 10 GeV*2 in a nucleon-structure model. In this model, the nucleon has an outer cloud of quark-antiquark condensed ground state, an inner shell of topological baryonic charge (r ~ 0.44F) probed by the vector meson omega, and a central quark-bag (r ~ 0.2F) containing valence quarks. We also predict elastic differential cross section in the Coulomb-hadronic interference region. Large |t| elastic scattering in this model arises from valence quark-quark scattering, which is taken to …
While the main features of elastic, diffractive and total cross sections are described well by Regge theory, the measured rise of the proton-(anti)proton single diffraction dissociation cross section with energy is considerably smaller than the theoretical prediction based on factorization and a constant triple-pomeron coupling. The observed energy dependence is obtained by renormalizing the pomeron flux "carried" by a nucleon to unity. Double diffraction and double pomeron exchange cross sections are reevaluated and compared to data, and a new interpretation of hard diffraction results emerge…
The transverse single-spin asymmetry A_N observed in high energy proton-proton collisions p^\uparrow p \to pi X has been found to increase with the momentum fraction x_F of the pion up to the largest measured x_F \sim 0.8, where A_N \simeq 40%. We consider the possibility that the asymmetry is due to a non-perturbatively generated spin-flip coupling in soft rescattering on the target proton. We demonstrate using perturbation theory that a non-vanishing asymmetry can be generated through interference between exchanges of even and odd charge conjugation provided both helicity flip and non-flip c…
Using the solution of the BFKL equation including the leading and subleading conformal spin components, we show how the conformal invariance underlying the leading log 1/x expansion of perturbative QCD leads to elastic amplitudes described by two effective Pomeron singularities. One Pomeron is the well-known "hard" BFKL leading singularity while the new one appears from a shift of the higher conformal spin BFKL singularities from subleading to leading position. This new effective singularity is compatible with the "soft" Pomeron and thus, together with the "hard" Pomeron, meets at large Q^2 th…
We derive the analytic expression of the two one-loop dipole contributions to the elastic 4-gluon amplitude in QCD. The first one corresponds to the double QCD pomeron exchange, the other to an order alpha^2 correction to one-pomeron exchange. Both are expressed in terms of the square of the recently derived triple QCD pomeron vertex and involve a summation over all conformal Eigenvectors of the BFKL kernel.
We study the behaviour of elastic and diffractive proton dissociation cross sections at high energy. First, we describe what would be expected to be observed at the LHC based on conventional Regge theory. We emphasize the tension between these expectations and the recent LHC measurements, and we discuss the possibilty to modify the classic Reggeon Field Theory in a physically-motivated way so as to accommodate the tendencies observed at the LHC. As a result, we show that we are able to achieve a `global' description of the wide variety of high energy elastic and diffractive data that are prese…
We estimate the contribution of nonperturbative quark-gluon chromomagnetic interaction to the high energy elastic proton-proton cross section at large momentum transfer. It is shown that this contribution is very large in the accessible kinematic region of the present experiments. We argue that Odderon which is the $P=C=-1$ partner of Pomeron, is governed by the spin-flip component related to the nonperturbative three-gluon exchange induced by the anomalous quark chromomagnetic moment. We discuss the possible spin effects in the elastic proton-proton and proton-antiproton scattering coming fro…
We consider simple-pole descriptions of soft elastic scattering at small $t$ and $s$, and allow for the presence of a hard pomeron. We have built and analyzed an exhaustive dataset and we show that simple poles provide an excellent description of the data in the region $- 0.5$ GeV$^2 < t <$ $- 0.1$ GeV$^2$, 6 GeV$<\sqrt{s}<$63 GeV. We show that new form factors have to be used, and get information on the trajectories of the soft and hard pomerons.
The differential cross-sections are calculated for proton-proton and proton-antiproton elastic scattering using the phenomenological model based on the analytic parameterizations for global scattering parameters (total cross-section and $ρ$ - parameter), crossing symmetry and derivative relations. We confront our model predictions with experimental data in wide range of energy and momentum transfer. The suggested method may be useful for PAX Program (GSI) as well as for high-energy experiments at RHIC and LHC.
Predictions of the elastic scattering, total-inetastic, and total proton-proton cross sections, based on a Regge theory inspired tensor-Pomeron implementation of the RENORM model for hadronic diffraction, are compared to the latest experimental measurements at the LHC. The measured cross sections are in good agreement within the experimental uncertainties of the data and the theoretical uncertainties of the model, reaching down to the ~1% level.
The theory of the perturbative pomeron, due to Lipatov and collaborators, is used to compute the probability of observing parton-parton elastic scattering and rapidity gaps between jets in hadron collisions at Tevatron energies.
We consider elastic quark-quark scattering at high energy with fixed momentum transfer $t$ and perform factorization of soft-gluon exchanges into a vacuum expectation value of Wilson lines. Taking into account nonperturbative corrections whose structure is predicted from infrared renormalon analysis, we represent the scattering amplitude as an asymptotic series. In the region of small momentum transfer, where the nonperturbative corrections are dominant, the scattering amplitude is Gaussian distribution in $t$ with a slope depending on a nonperturbative scale. A nonperturbative origin of the s…
The theory of the perturbative pomeron, due to Lipatov and collaborators, is used to compute the probability of observing parton-parton elastic scattering and rapidity gaps between jets in hadron collisions at SSC and LHC energies.
