We present a new approach to measuring cosmic expansion history and growth rate of large scale structure using the anisotropic two dimensional galaxy correlation function (2DCF) measured from data; it makes use of the empirical modeling of small-scale galaxy clustering derived from numerical simulations by Zheng et al. (2013). We validate this method using mock catalogues, before applying it to the analysis of the CMASS sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 10 (DR10) of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). We find that this method enables accurate and precise measurements of cosmic expansion history and growth rate of large scale structure. Modeling the 2DCF fully including nonlinear effects and redshift space distortions (RSD) in the scale range of 16 to 144 Mpc/h, we find H(0.57)r_s(z_d)/c=0.0459 +/- 0.0006, D_A(0.57)/r_s(z_d)=9.011 +/- 0.073, and f_g(0.57)σ_8(0.57)=0.476 +/- 0.050, which correspond to precisions of 1.3%, 0.8%, and 10.5% respectively. We have defined r_s(z_d) to be the sound horizon at the drag epoch computed using a simple integral, f_g(z) as the growth rate at redshift z, and σ_8(z) as the matter power spectrum normalization on 8Mpc/h scale at z. We find that neglecting the small-scale information significantly weakens the constraints on H(z) and D_A(z), and leads to a biased estimate of f_g(z). Our results indicate that we can significantly tighten constraints on dark energy and modified gravity by reliably modeling small-scale galaxy clustering.
Conventionally, in galaxy surveys, cosmological constraints on the growth and expansion history of the universe have been obtained from the measurements of redshift-space distortions and baryon acoustic oscillations embedded in the large-scale galaxy density field. In this paper, we study how well one can improve the cosmological constraints from the combination of the galaxy density field with velocity and tidal fields, which are observed via the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) and galaxy intrinsic alignment (IA) effects, respectively. For illustration, we consider the deep galaxy survey by …
Modified gravity and massive neutrino cosmologies are two of the most interesting scenarios that have been recently explored to account for possible observational deviations from the concordance $Λ$-cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) model. In this context, we investigated the large-scale structure of the Universe by exploiting the \dustp simulations that implement, simultaneously, the effects of $f(R)$ gravity and massive neutrinos. To study the possibility of breaking the degeneracy between these two effects, we analysed the redshift-space distortions in the clustering of dark matter haloes at differ…

Improving the theoretical description of galaxy clustering on small scales is an important challenge in cosmology, as it can considerably increase the scientific return of forthcoming galaxy surveys -- e.g. tightening the bounds on neutrino masses and deviations from general relativity. In this paper, we propose and test a new model for the clustering of galaxies that is able to accurately describe redshift-space distortions even down to small scales. This model corresponds to a second-order perturbative Lagrangian bias expansion which is advected to Eulerian space employing a displacement fie…
Fiber collision is a persistent problem faced by modern spectroscopic galaxy surveys. In this work, we propose a new method to correct for this undesired effect, focusing on the clustering from the fiber-collision scale up to $\lesssim 10 \rm Mpc\,h^{-1}$. We assume that the fiber-collided galaxies are in association with their nearest three angular neighbors. Compared with the conventional nearest-neighbor method, we have properly accounted for the foreground (background) galaxies that are associated with the foreground (background) cosmic webs relative to the nearest neighbor. We have tested…
We estimate galaxy clustering under a modified gravitational potential. In particular, the modifications in gravitational potential energy occur due to a power-law and cosmological constant terms. We derive a canonical partition function for the system of galaxies interacting under such a modified gravitational potential. Moreover, we compute various thermodynamical equation of states for the system. We do comparative analysis in order to emphasize the effect of corrections on thermodynamics of the system. Interestingly, the modifications in thermodynamical quantities are embedded in clusterin…
We present a novel simulation-based hybrid emulator approach that maximally derives cosmological and Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) information from non-linear galaxy clustering, with sufficient precision for DESI Year 1 (Y1) analysis. Our hybrid approach first samples the HOD space on a fixed cosmological simulation grid to constrain the high-likelihood region of cosmology+HOD parameter space, and then constructs the emulator within this constrained region. This approach significantly reduces the parameter volume emulated over, thus achieving much smaller emulator errors with fixed number…
We develop an improved Alcock-Paczynski (AP) test method that uses the redshift-space two-point correlation function (2pCF) of galaxies. Cosmological constraints can be obtained by examining the redshift dependence of the normalized 2pCF, which should not change apart from the expected small non-linear evolution. An incorrect choice of cosmology used to convert redshift to comoving distance will manifest itself as redshift-dependent 2pCF. Our method decomposes the redshift difference of the two-dimensional correlation function into the Legendre polynomials whose amplitudes are modeled by radia…
Powerful current and future cosmological constraints using high precision measurements of the large-scale structure of galaxies and its weak gravitational lensing effects rely on accurate characterization of the redshift distributions of the galaxy samples using only broadband imaging. We present a framework for constraining both the redshift probability distributions of galaxy populations and the redshifts of their individual members. We use a hierarchical Bayesian model (HBM) which provides full posterior distributions on those redshift probability distributions, and, for the first time, we …
Measurements of redshift space distortions (RSD) provide a means to test models of gravity on large-scales. We use mock galaxy catalogues constructed from large N-body simulations of standard and modified gravity models to measure galaxy clustering in redshift space. We focus our attention on two of the most representative and popular families of modified gravity models: the Hu \& Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity and the normal branch of the DGP model. The galaxy catalogues are built using a halo occupation distribution (HOD) prescription with the HOD parameters in the modified gravity models tuned to m…
Measuring weak lensing cosmic magnification signal is very challenging due to the overwhelming intrinsic clustering in the observed galaxy distribution. In this paper, we modify the Internal Linear Combination (ILC) method to reconstruct the lensing signal with an extra constraint to suppress the intrinsic clustering. To quantify the performance, we construct a realistic galaxy catalogue for the LSST-like photometric survey, covering $20\,000\ °^2$ with mean source redshift at $z_s\sim 1$. We find that the reconstruction performance depends on the width of the photo-z bin we choose. Due to the…
One of the seemingly strongest constraints on the fraction of dark matter in the form of primordial black holes (PBH) of ${\cal O}$(10)$\,M_\odot$ relies on the merger rate inferred from the binary BH merger events detected by LIGO/Virgo. The robustness of these bounds depends however on the accuracy with which the formation of PBH binaries in the early Universe can be described. We revisit the standard estimate of the merger rate, focusing on a couple of key ingredients: the spatial distribution of nearest neighbours and the initial clustering of PBHs associated to a given primordial power sp…
In modern cosmology, an important task is investigating whether there exists a signal of modified gravity in the universe. Due to the limited resolutions and sensitivities of facilities, current observations can not detect any signal of modified gravity. As a consequence, it is urgent to predict the constraining power of future cosmological surveys on modified gravity. We constrain the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity with eight future mainstream probes encompassing 21 cm intensity mapping, HI galaxy, cosmic microwave background, optical galaxy, weak lensing, galaxy clustering, type Ia supernovae and…
The coming generation of galaxy surveys will provide measurements of galaxy clustering with unprecedented accuracy and data size, which will allow us to test cosmological models at much higher precision than achievable previously. This means that we must have more accurate theoretical predictions to compare with future observational data. As a first step towards more accurate modelling of the redshift space distortions (RSD) of small-scale galaxy clustering in modified gravity (MG) cosmologies, we investigate the validity of the so-called Skew-T (ST) probability distribution function (PDF) of …
The clustering of galaxies in the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: measurements of the growth of structure and expansion rate at z=0.57 from anisotropic clustering
The large-scale redshift-space distortion (RSD) in galaxy clustering can probe $fσ_8$, a combination of the cosmic structure growth rate and the matter fluctuation amplitude, which can constrain dark energy models and test theories of gravity. While the RSD on small scales (e.g. a few to tens of $h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$) can further tighten the $fσ_8$ constraints, galaxy assembly bias, if not correctly modelled, may introduce systematic uncertainties. Using a mock galaxy catalogue with built-in assembly bias, we perform a preliminary study on how assembly bias may affect the $fσ_8$ inference. We find…
We present forecasted cosmological constraints from combined measurements of galaxy cluster abundances from the Simons Observatory and galaxy clustering from a DESI-like experiment on two well-studied modified gravity models, the chameleon-screened $f(R)$ Hu-Sawicki model and the nDGP braneworld Vainshtein model. A Fisher analysis is conducted using $σ_8$ constraints derived from thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) selected galaxy clusters, as well as linear and mildly non-linear redshift-space 2-point galaxy correlation functions. We find that the cluster abundances drive the constraints on the …
Model-Independent Measurements of Cosmic Expansion and Growth at z=0.57 Using the Anisotropic Clustering of CMASS Galaxies From the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 9
Galaxy redshift surveys are subject to incompleteness and inhomogeneous sampling due to the various constraints inherent to spectroscopic observations. This can introduce systematic errors on the summary statistics of interest, which need to be mitigated in cosmological analysis to achieve high accuracy. Standard practices involve applying weighting schemes based on completeness estimates across the survey footprint, possibly supplemented with additional weighting schemes accounting for density-dependent effects. In this work, we concentrate on pure angular systematics and describe an alternat…
The Brans-Dicke (BD) theory is the simplest Scalar-Tensor theory of gravity, which can be considered as a candidate of modified Einstein's theory of general relativity. In this work, we forecast the constraints on BD theory in the CSST galaxy clustering spectroscopic survey with a magnitude limit $\sim 23$ AB mag for point-source 5$σ$ detection. We generate mock data based on the zCOSMOS catalog and consider the observational and instrumental effects of the CSST spectroscopic survey. We predicate galaxy power spectra in the BD theory from $z=0$ to 1.5, and the galaxy bias and other systematica…

We extend the scale-dependent Gaussian Streaming Model (GSM) to produce analytical predictions for the anisotropic redshift-space correlation function for biased tracers in modified gravity models. Employing the Convolution Lagrangian Perturbation Theory (CLPT) re-summation scheme, with a local Lagrangian bias schema provided by the peak-background split formalism, we predict the necessary ingredients that enter the GSM, the real-space halo pairwise velocity and the pairwise velocity dispersion. We further consider effective field theory contributions to the pairwise velocity dispersion in ord…
Photometric galaxy surveys constitute a powerful cosmological probe but rely on the accurate characterization of their redshift distributions using only broadband imaging, and can be very sensitive to incomplete or biased priors used for redshift calibration. Sánchez & Bernstein (2019) presented a hierarchical Bayesian model which estimates those from the robust combination of prior information, photometry of single galaxies and the information contained in the galaxy clustering against a well-characterized tracer population. In this work, we extend the method so that it can be applied to real…
We investigate clustering properties of dark matter halos and galaxies to search for optimal statistics and scales where possible departures from general relativity (GR) could be found. We use large N-body cosmological simulations to perform measurements based on the two-point correlation function (2PCF) in GR and in selected modified gravity (MG) structure formation scenarios. As a test-bed, we employ two popular beyond-GR models: $f(R)$ gravity and the normal branch of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (nDGP) braneworld. We study a range of simulated halo and galaxy populations and reveal a notice…
We investigate the radiative stability of Horndeski scalar-tensor theories with luminally propagating gravitational waves (as extensively discussed in the wake of GW170817) and show that in general there is a tension between obtaining observable deviations from General Relativity (GR) in cosmology and the requirement of radiative stability. Using this as a constraint, we discuss the subsets of theories that are capable of evading this conclusion and yielding observable, radiatively stable departures from GR. We find several classes of theories that can do so, recovering known cases and identif…
