A Simple Streaming Bit-parallel Algorithm for Swap Pattern Matching

The pattern matching problem with swaps is to find all occurrences of a pattern in a text while allowing the pattern to swap adjacent symbols. The goal is to design fast matching algorithm that takes advantage of the bit parallelism of bitwise machine instructions and has only streaming access to the input. We introduce a new approach to solve this problem based on the graph theoretic model and compare its performance to previously known algorithms. We also show that an approach using deterministic finite automata cannot achieve similarly efficient algorithms. Furthermore, we describe a fatal flaw in some of the previously published algorithms based on the same model. Finally, we provide experimental evaluation of our algorithm on real-world data.

A one-bit swap object using test-and-sets and a max register

We describe a linearizable, wait-free implementation of a one-bit swap object from a single max register and an unbounded array of test-and-set bits. Each swap operation takes at most three steps. Using standard randomized constructions, the max register and test-and-set bits can be replaced by read-write registers, at the price of raising the cost of a swap operation to an expected O(max(log n, min(log t, n))) steps, where t is the number of times the swap object has previously changed its value and n is the number of processes.

Simplified and Space-Optimal Semi-Streaming for $(2+ε)$-Approximate Matching

In a recent breakthrough, Paz and Schwartzman (SODA'17) presented a single-pass ($2+ε$)-approximation algorithm for the maximum weight matching problem in the semi-streaming model. Their algorithm uses $O(n\log^2 n)$ bits of space, for any constant $ε>0$. We present two simplified and more intuitive analyses, for essentially the same algorithm, which also improve the space complexity to the optimal bound of $O(n\log n)$ bits --- this is optimal as the output matching requires $Ω(n\log n)$ bits. Our analyses rely on a simple use of the primal-dual method and a simple accounting method.

Streaming Periodicity with Mismatches

We study the problem of finding all $k$-periods of a length-$n$ string $S$, presented as a data stream. $S$ is said to have $k$-period $p$ if its prefix of length $n-p$ differs from its suffix of length $n-p$ in at most $k$ locations. Streaming Algorithms with Large Approximation Factors

We initiate a broad study of classical problems in the streaming model with insertions and deletions in the setting where we allow the approximation factor $α$ to be much larger than $1$. Such algorithms can use significantly less memory than the usual setting for which $α= 1+ε$ for an $ε\in (0,1)$. A $(2+ε)$-Approximation for Maximum Weight Matching in the Semi-Streaming Model

We present a simple deterministic single-pass $(2+ε)$-approximation algorithm for the maximum weight matching problem in the semi-streaming model. This improves upon the currently best known approximation ratio of $(4+ε)$. Our algorithm uses $O(n\log^2 n)$ bits of space for constant values of $ε$. It relies on a variation of the local-ratio theorem, which may be of use for other algorithms in the semi-streaming model as well.

We study the maximum geometric independent set and clique problems in the streaming model. Given a collection of geometric objects arriving in an insertion only stream, the aim is to find a subset such that all objects in the subset are pairwise disjoint or intersect respectively. Weighted Matching in the Semi-Streaming Model

We reduce the best known approximation ratio for finding a weighted matching of a graph using a one-pass semi-streaming algorithm from 5.828 to 5.585. The semi-streaming model forbids random access to the input and restricts the memory to O(n*polylog(n)) bits. It was introduced by Muthukrishnan in 2003 and is appropriate when dealing with massive graphs.
