We propose to relate dark matter stability to the possible Dirac nature of neutrinos. The idea is illustrated in a simple scheme where small Dirac neutrino masses arise from a type--I seesaw mechanism as a result of a $Z_4$ discrete lepton number symmetry. The latter implies the existence of a viable WIMP dark matter candidate, whose stability arises from the same symmetry which ensures the Diracness of neutrinos.
We propose a simple $Δ(27) \otimes Z_4$ model where neutrinos are predicted to be Dirac fermions. The smallness of their masses follows from a type-I seesaw mechanism and the leptonic CP violating phase correlates with the pattern of $Δ(27)$ flavor symmetry breaking. The scheme naturally harbors a WIMP dark matter candidate associated to the Dirac nature of neutrinos, in that the same $Z_4$ lepton number symmetry also ensures dark matter stability.
We propose an $A_4$ extension of the Standard Model with a Lepton Quarticity symmetry correlating dark matter stability with the Dirac nature of neutrinos. The flavor symmetry predicts (i) a generalized bottom-tau mass relation involving all families, (ii) small neutrino masses are induced a la seesaw, (iii) CP must be significantly violated in neutrino oscillations, (iv) the atmospheric angle $θ_{23}$ lies in the second octant, and (v) only the normal neutrino mass ordering is realized.
Oscillation studies play a central role in elucidating at least some aspects of the flavor problem. Here we examine the status of the predictions of a lepton quarticity flavor theory of neutrino oscillations against the existing global sample of oscillation data. By performing quantitative simulations we also determine the potential of the upcoming DUNE experiment in narrowing down the currently ill-measured oscillation parameters $θ_{23}$ and $δ_{\text{CP}}$. We present the expected improved sensitivity on these parameters for different assumptions.

We discuss the potential to observe lepton number violation (LNV) in displaced vertex searches for heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) at future lepton colliders. Even though a direct detection of LNV is impossible for the dominant production channel because lepton number is carried away by an unobservable neutrino, there are several signatures of LNV that can be searched for. They include the angular distribution and spectrum of decay products as well as the HNL lifetime. We comment on the perspectives to observe LNV in realistic neutrino mass models and argue that the dichotomy of Dirac vs Majorana…
We investigate purely leptonic decays of leptons $ł^{\prime-}\to l^-\barν_lν_{l^{\prime}}$ to distinguish Dirac or Majorana neutrinos. We derive the differences of the decay width (and associated quantities) between the two neutrino hypotheses by the effect of identical particles. Evidence from experimental data makes the hypothesis of Majorana neutrinos very unlikely and our results strongly favor the hypothesis of Dirac neutrinos (in the standard three-neutrino theory). Moreover, our exploration for decay widths can be extended to the polarization angles of leptons, which will inspire new in…
We present a freeze-in realization of the Dirac neutrinogenesis in which the decaying particle that generates the lepton-number asymmetry is in thermal equilibrium. As the right-handed Dirac neutrinos are produced non-thermally, the lepton-number asymmetry is accumulated and partially converted to the baryon-number asymmetry via the rapid sphaleron transitions. The necessary CP-violating condition can be fulfilled by a purely thermal kinetic phase from the wavefunction correction in the lepton-doublet sector, which has been neglected in most leptogenesis-based setup. Furthermore, this conditio…
Probing the leptonic Dirac CP-violating phase in neutrino oscillation experiments
The discovery of leptonic CP violation is one of the primary goals of next-generation neutrino oscillation experiments, which is feasible due to the recent measurement of a relatively large leptonic mixing angle θ_{13}. We suggest two new working observables ΔA^{ \rm m}_{αβ} \equiv \max [A^{ \rm CP}_{αβ}(δ)] - \min [A^{ \rm CP}_{αβ}(δ)] and ΔA^{ \rm CP}_{αβ}(δ) \equiv A^{ \rm CP}_{αβ}(δ) - A^{ \rm CP}_{αβ}(0) to describe the CP-violating effects in long-baseline and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments. The former signifies the experimental sensitivity to the leptonic Dirac CP-violatin…
We consider a supersymmetric SU(4)$_c \times$SU(2)$_L \times$SU(2)$_R$ model with a minimal number of Higgs multiplets and Dirac and Majorana $CP$-violating phases in the neutrino flavor mixing matrix. The model incorporates the charged fermion masses and quark mixings, and uses type I seesaw to explain the solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations. With the neutrino oscillation data of two mass squared differences and three flavor mixing angles, we employ thermal leptogenesis and the observed baryon asymmetry to find the allowed regions for the Dirac and Majorana phases. For a normal neutri…
The notion of U(1) lepton number (which may only be softly broken) is applied to models of dark matter which interacts with leptons. Previous scotogenic models of Majorana or Dirac neutrino mass are shown to be derivable in this framework without additional symmetries. Only complete renormalizable theories are considered. An explicit class of models with $Z_n$ ($n \geq 5$) lepton and dark symmetry for Dirac neutrinos is derived, as well as an example of $Z_3$ dark symmetry.
The seesaw mechanism explains the exclusive smallness of neutrino masses by the presence of very heavy Majorana masses and leads to the appearance of Majorana particles and to the direct lepton number violation. The author proposes a seesaw scenario that produces only Dirac neutrinos with the same violation. This scenario appears possible for heavy neutrinos with non-perturbative Higgs boson H couplings. Such a scenario could be accomplished in the model describing the structure of weak mixing matrices for quarks and leptons through the existence of very heavy mirror analogs of Standard Model …
Lepton number is promoted to an $U(1)_L$ gauge symmetry in a simple extension of the standard model. The spontaneous breaking of $U(1)_L$ by three units allows a conserved $Z_3^L$ lepton symmetry to remain, guaranteeing that neutrinos are Dirac fermions, which acquire naturally small masses from a previously proposed mechanism. Dark matter appears as a singlet scalar, with dark symmetry $Z_3^D$ derivable from $Z_3^L$. Muon $g-2$ may be explained.
We propose a new mechanism to explain neutrino masses with lepton number conservation, in which the Dirac neutrino masses are generated at the two-loop level involving a dark matter candidate. In this model, branching ratios of lepton flavor violating decays of the Higgs boson can be much larger than those of lepton flavor violating decays of charged leptons. If lepton flavor violating decays of the Higgs boson are observed at future collider experiments without detecting lepton flavor violating decays of charged leptons, most of the models previously proposed for tiny neutrino masses are excl…
We study a specific version of $SU(2)_R \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_{B-L}$ models extended by discrete symmetries where the new physics sector responsible for tiny neutrino masses at leading order remains decoupled from the new physics sector that can give rise to observable signatures of lepton number violation such as neutrinoless double beta decay. More specifically, the dominant contribution to light neutrino masses comes from a one-loop Dirac mass. At higher loop level, a tiny Majorana mass also appears which remains suppressed by many order of magnitudes in comparison to the Dirac mass. S…
Nonzero neutrino masses imply the existence of degrees of freedom and interactions beyond those in the Standard Model. A powerful indicator of what these might be is the nature of the massive neutrinos: Dirac fermions versus Majorana fermions. While addressing the nature of neutrinos is often associated with searches for lepton-number violation, there are several other features that distinguish Majorana from Dirac fermions. Here, we compute in great detail the kinematics of the daughters of the decays into charged-leptons and neutrinos of hypothetical heavy neutral leptons at rest. We allow fo…
We computed the kinematics of Z-boson decay into a heavy-light neutrino pair when the Z-boson is produced at rest in electron-positron collisions, including the subsequent decay of the heavy neutrino into a visible final state containing a charged-lepton. We concentrated on heavy-neutrino masses of order dozens of GeV and the issue of addressing the nature of the neutrinos - Dirac fermions or Majorana fermions. We find that while it is not possible to tell the nature of the heavy and light neutrinos on an event-by-event basis, the nature of the neutrinos can nonetheless be inferred given a lar…
Formation of quark and lepton mass matrices through intermediate states of heavy mirror fermions is capable of reproducing main qualitative properties of weak mixing matrices (CKM and PMNS matrices). The reproduction includes the hierarchy of CKM matrix elements, a general form of the PMNS matrix, involving the smallness of the neutrino mixing angle θ_{13}, and leads to very small neutrino masses. For leptons, these properties appear only for the Dirac nature of SM neutrino and its inverse spectrum. In such a lepton system, not only do spontaneous mirror symmetry violation and the observed mas…
We consider a mirror world scenario, in which light Dirac neutrinos are generated from a seesaw mechanism and leptogenesis occurs at high scale without violating lepton number. After leptogenesis, the conservation laws of the theory imply the visible baryon-minus-lepton asymmetry to be equal to the mirror baryon-minus-lepton asymmetry. We extend previous work by presenting a detailed study of this Dirac leptogenesis mechanism by constructing the full set of Boltzmann Equations for both cases of unflavored and flavored regimes. We show that $Z_2$ breaking and lepton/mirror lepton flavor effects…
Dirac neutrino masses require two distinct neutral Weyl spinors per generation, with a special arrangement of masses and interactions with charged leptons. Once this arrangement is perturbed, lepton number is no longer conserved and neutrinos become Majorana particles. If these lepton number violating perturbations are small compared to the Dirac mass terms, neutrinos are quasi-Dirac particles. Alternatively, this scenario can be characterized by the existence of pairs of neutrinos with almost degenerate masses, and a lepton mixing matrix which has 12 angles and 12 phases. In this work we disc…
We explore the implications of recent results relating the Dirac CP-violating phase to predicted and measured leptonic mixing angles within a standard set of theoretical scenarios in which charged lepton corrections are responsible for generating a non-zero value of the reactor mixing angle. We employ a full set of leptonic sum rules as required by the unitarity of the lepton mixing matrix, which can be reduced to predictions for the observable mixing angles and the Dirac CP-violating phase in terms of model parameters. These sum rules are investigated within a given set of theoretical scenari…
We study the possibility of generating tiny Dirac neutrino masses at one loop level through the \textit{scotogenic} mechanism such that one of the particles going inside the loop can be a stable cold dark matter (DM) candidate. Majorana mass terms of singlet fermions as well as tree level Dirac neutrino masses are prevented by incorporating the presence of additional discrete symmetries in a minimal fashion, which also guarantee the stability of the dark matter candidate. Due to the absence of total lepton number violation, the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe is generated through the…
