In the absence of a third dredge-up episode during the asymptotic giant branch phase, white dwarf models evolved from low-metallicity progenitors have a thick hydrogen envelope, which makes hydrogen shell burning be the most important energy source. We investigate the pulsational stability of white dwarf models with thick envelopes to see whether nonradial $g$-mode pulsations are triggered by hydrogen burning, with the aim of placing constraints on hydrogen shell burning in cool white dwarfs and on a third dredge-up during the asymptotic giant branch evolution of their progenitor stars. We construct white-dwarf sequences from low-metallicity progenitors by means of full evolutionary calculations, and analyze their pulsation stability for the models in the range of effective temperatures $T_{\rm eff} \sim 15\,000\,-\, 8\,000$ K. We demonstrate that, for white dwarf models with masses $M_{\star} \lesssim 0.71\,\rm M_{\sun}$ and effective temperatures $8\,500 \lesssim T_{\rm eff} \lesssim 11\,600$ K that evolved from low-metallicity progenitors ($Z= 0.0001$, $0.0005$, and $0.001$) the dipole ($\ell= 1$) and quadrupole ($\ell=2$) $g_1$ modes are excited mostly due to the hydrogen-burning shell through the $\varepsilon$-mechanism, in addition to other $g$ modes driven by either the $κ-γ$ or the convective driving mechanism. However, the $\varepsilon$ mechanism is insufficient to drive these modes in white dwarfs evolved from solar-metallicity progenitors. We suggest that efforts should be made to observe the dipole $g_1$ mode in white dwarfs associated with low-metallicity environments, such as globular clusters and/or the galactic halo, to place constraints on hydrogen shell burning in cool white dwarfs and the third dredge-up episode during the preceding asymptotic giant branch phase.
The detection of pulsations in white dwarfs with low mass offers the possibility of probing their internal structure through asteroseismology and place constraints on the binary evolutionary processes involved in their formation. In this paper we assess the impact of stable H burning on the pulsational stability properties of low-mass He-core white dwarf models resulting from binary star evolutionary calculations. We found that, apart from a dense spectrum of unstable radial modes and nonradial $g$- and $p$-modes driven by the $κ$-mechanism due to the partial ionization of H in the stellar env…
Helium core white dwarfs (WDs) with mass M <~ 0.20 Msun undergo several Gyrs of stable hydrogen burning as they evolve. We show that in a certain range of WD and hydrogen envelope masses, these WDs may exhibit g-mode pulsations similar to their passively cooling, more massive carbon/oxygen core counterparts, the ZZ Cetis. Our models with stably burning hydrogen envelopes on helium cores yield g-mode periods and period spacings longer than the canonical ZZ Cetis by nearly a factor of 2. We show that core composition and structure can be probed using seismology since the g-mode eigenfunctions pr…
Pulsation powered by deuterium burning in brown dwarfs and very low mass stars has been put forth (Palla & Baraffe 2005) as a novel probe of the interiors of these objects in the 1-15 Myr age range. Previous observations have hinted at variability on the expected timescales of a few hours, suggesting but not confirming that the phenomenon is at work in young brown dwarfs. We have recently carried out a dedicated campaign to search for this putative class of pulsators among known low-mass members of five young star clusters. Our survey achieves sensitivity to periodic oscillations with photomet…
Comment on the feasibility of carbon burning in Betelgeuse: a response to "The evolutionary stage of Betelgeuse inferred from its pulsation periods," arXiv:2306.00287
We present the results of the first theoretical non-radial non-adiabatic pulsational study of M dwarf stellar models with masses in the range 0.1 to 0.5M_solar. We find the fundamental radial mode to be unstable due to an εmechanism caused by deuterium (D-) burning for the young 0.1 and 0.2M_solar models, by non-equilibrium He^3 burning for the 0.2 and 0.25M_solar models of 10^4Myr, and by a flux blocking mechanism for the partially convective 0.4 and 0.5M_solar models once they reach the age of 500Myr. The periods of the overstable modes excited by the D-burning are in the range 4.2 to 5.2h f…
In 2005, Palla & Baraffe proposed that brown dwarfs (BDs) and very low mass stars (VLMSs; <0.1 solar masses) may be unstable to radial oscillations during the pre-main-sequence deuterium burning phase. With associated periods of 1-4 hours, this potentially new class of pulsation offers unprecedented opportunities to probe the interiors and evolution of low-mass objects in the 1-15 million year age range. Following up on reports of short-period variability in young clusters, we designed a high-cadence photometric monitoring campaign to search for deuterium-burning pulsation among a sample of 34…
We investigate the pulsation driving mechanism responsible for the long-period photometric variations observed in LS IV-14°116, a subdwarf B star showing a He-enriched atmospheric composition. To this end, we perform detailed nonadiabatic pulsation computations over fully evolutionary post He-core-flash stellar structure models, appropriate for hot subdwarf stars at evolutionary phases previous to the He-core burning stage. We found that the variability of LS IV-14°116 can be attributed to nonradial g-mode pulsations excited by the ε-mechanism acting in the He-burning shells that appear before…
After an optical peak, a classical or recurrent nova settles into a brief (days to years) period of quasi-stable thermonuclear burning in a compact configuration nearly at the white dwarf (WD) radius. During this time, the underlying WD becomes visible as a strong emitter of supersoft X-rays. Observations during this phase have revealed oscillations in the X-ray emission with periods on the order of tens of seconds. A proposed explanation for the source of these oscillations are internal gravity waves excited by nuclear reactions at the base of the hydrogen-burning layer. In this work, we pres…
We present a pulsational stability analysis of hot post-AGB H-deficient pre-white dwarf stars with active He-burning shells. The stellar models employed are state-of-the-art equilibrium structures representative of PG1159 stars derived from the complete evolution of the progenitor stars. On the basis of fully nonadiabatic pulsation computations, we confirmed theoretical evidence for the existence of a separate PG1159 instability strip in the $\log T_{\rm eff} - \log g$ diagram characterized by short-period $g$-modes excited by the $ε$-mechanism. This instability strip partially overlaps the al…
Asteroseismology of non-radial pulsations in Hot B Subdwarfs (sdB stars) offers a unique view into the interior of core-helium-burning stars. Ground-based and space-borne high precision light curves allow for the analysis of pressure and gravity mode pulsations to probe the structure of sdB stars deep into the convective core. As such asteroseismological analysis provides an excellent opportunity to test our understanding of stellar evolution. In light of the newest constraints from asteroseismology of sdB and red clump stars, standard approaches of convective mixing in 1D stellar evolution mo…
The cores of luminous B and A-type (BA) supergiant stars are the seeds of later core collapse supernovae. Thus, constraining the near-core conditions in this class of stars can place tighter constraints on the size, mass and chemical composition of supernova remnants. Asteroseismology of these massive stars is one possible approach into such investigations. Recently, Moravveji et al. (2012, hereafter Paper I) extracted 19 significant frequencies from a 6-year radial velocity monitoring or Rigel (βOri, B8 Ia). The periods they determined broadly range from 1.22 to 74.74 days. Based on our diffe…
The most violent strange mode pulsations (SMPs) are expected in classical WR stars, the bare, compact helium-burning cores of evolved massive stars, where SMPs are predicted to manifest themselves in cyclic photometric variability with periods ranging from minutes to hours and amplitudes in the several to tens of mmag range. Since WR\,2 is one of the hottest WR stars known, it should make it an excellent candidate for SMPs. However, our high-precision near infrared photometric campaign shows no periodic variations with an amplitude higher than 2.5 mmag on a timescale of ~6 hours, which is more…
Ultra-massive hydrogen-rich white dwarfs (WDs) stars are expected to harbor oxygen/neon cores resulting from semi-degenerate carbon burning when the progenitor star evolves through the super asymptotic giant branch (SAGB) phase. These stars are expected to be crystallized by the time they reach the ZZ Ceti domain. We show that crystallization leads to a phase separation of oxygen and neon in the core of ultra-massive WDs, which impacts markedly the pulsational properties, thus offering a unique opportunity to study the processes of crystallization and to infer the core chemical composition in …
The detection of mixed oscillation modes offers a unique insight into the internal structure of core helium burning (CHeB) stars. The stellar structure during CHeB is very uncertain because the growth of the convective core, and/or the development of a semiconvection zone, is critically dependent on the treatment of convective boundaries. In this study we calculate a suite of stellar structure models and their non-radial pulsations to investigate why the predicted asymptotic g-mode $\ell = 1$ period spacing $ΔΠ_1$ is systematically lower than is inferred from Kepler field stars. We find that o…
We carried out a fully non-adiabatic analysis for nonradial oscillations of pre-white dwarfs evolved from the post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) with hydrogen-dominated envelopes. It is shown that nuclear reactions in the hydrogen burning-shell excite low-degree g-modes in the period range of about 40-200 s for the pre-white dwarf models with Teff=40,000 K - 300,000 K. It is also shown that the amount of hydrogen {has} a significant influence on the instability domain of such pre-white dwarfs in the Hertzsprung-Russel (H-R) diagram. Thus, the thickness of hydrogen-dominated envelopes may be we…
(Abridged abstract) We explore the formation of ultra-massive (M_{\rm WD} \gtrsim 1.05 M_\sun$), carbon-oxygen core white dwarfs resulting from single stellar evolution. We also study their evolutionary and pulsational properties and compare them with those of the ultra-massive white dwarfs with oxygen-neon cores resulting from carbon burning in single progenitor stars, and with binary merger predictions. We consider two single-star evolution scenarios for the formation of ultra-massive carbon-oxygen core white dwarfs that involve rotation of the degenerate core after core helium burning and r…
Before reaching their quiescent terminal white-dwarf cooling branch, some low-mass helium-core white dwarf stellar models experience a number of nuclear flashes which greatly reduce their hydrogen envelopes. Just before the occurrence of each flash, stable hydrogen burning may be able to drive global pulsations that could be relevant to shed some light on the internal structure of these stars through asteroseismology. We present a pulsational stability analysis applied to low-mass helium-core stars on their early white-dwarf cooling branches going through CNO flashes in order to study the poss…
We present results of the instability analysis of the post-main sequence massive star models against radial and nonradial pulsations. We confirm that both p- and g-modes can be excited by the $κ$-mechanism acting in the metal opacity bump. However, as opposed to the previous claims, we find that an intermediate convective zone (ICZ) related to the hydrogen burning shell is not necessary for excitation of g-modes. These modes can be reflected at a minimum of the Brunt-Väisälä frequency, located at the top of the chemical composition gradient region surrounding the radiative helium core. This mi…
Theoretical estimates of the pulsation period change rates in LMC Cepheids are obtained from consistent calculation of stellar evolution and nonlinear stellar pulsation for stars with initial chemical composition X=0.7, Z=0.008, initial masses 5M_\odot <= Mzams <= 9M_\odot and pulsation periods ranged from 2.2 to 29 day. The Cepheid hydrodynamical models correspond to the evolutionary stage of thermonuclear core helium burning. During evolution across the instability strip in the HR diagram the pulsation period of Cepheids is the quadratic function of the evolution time for the both fundamenta…
Recent computations of the interior composition of ultra-massive white dwarfs (WD) have suggested that some white dwarfs could be composed of neon (Ne)-dominated cores. This result is at variance with our previous understanding of the chemical structure of massive white dwarfs, where oxygen is the predominant element. In addition, it is not clear whether some hybrid carbon (C) oxygen (O)-Ne white dwarfs might form when convective boundary mixing is accounted for during the propagation of the C-flame, in the C-burning stage. Both Ne-dominated and hybrid CO-Ne core would have measurable conseque…
If a massive star has lost significant mass during its red-supergiant stage, it would return to blue region in the HR diagram and spend a part of the core-He burning stage as a blue supergiant having a luminosity to mass ratio (L/M) considerably larger than about 10^4 (in solar units); the duration depends on the degree of internal mixing and on the metallicity. Then, various stellar pulsations are excited by enhanced κ-mechanism and strange mode instability. Assuming these pulsations to be responsible for (at least some of) the quasi-periodic light and radial-velocity variations in αCygni var…
The recent plethora of sky surveys, especially the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, have discovered many low-mass (M < 0.45 Msun) white dwarfs that should have cores made of nearly pure helium. These WDs come in two varieties; those with masses 0.2 < M < 0.45 Msun and H envelopes so thin that they rapidly cool, and those with M < 0.2 Msun (often called extremely low mass, ELM, WDs) that have thick enough H envelopes to sustain 10^9 years of H burning. In both cases, these WDs evolve through the ZZ Ceti instability strip, Teff = 9,000-12,000 K, where g-mode pulsations always occur in Carbon/Oxygen WDs…
ZZ Ceti stars are pulsating white dwarfs with a carbon-oxygen core (or possibly ONe for the most massive stars) build up during the core helium burning (CHeB) and thermally pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch (TP-AGB) phases. Through the interpretation of their pulsation periods by means of asteroseismology, details about their origin and evolution can be inferred. The whole pulsation spectrum exhibited by ZZ Ceti stars strongly depend on the inner chemical structure. At present, there are several processes affecting the chemical profiles that are still not accurately determined. We present a stud…
We determine the fundamental stellar parameters of altogether 20 double-mode RR Lyrae (RRd) stars from the Galactic Field and the Large Magellanic Cloud, following our approach employed on the field RRd star BS Comae. The stars were selected to cover wide ranges of periods and period ratios, implying diverse stellar parameters. From the possible observed quantities we use only the periods and determine stellar parameter combinations that satisfy both current helium-burning evolutionary models and grids of linear non-adiabatic purely radiative pulsational models. Thus, the periods of an object …
Blue large-amplitude pulsators (BLAPs) are a newly discovered type of variable star. Their typical pulsation periods are on the order of a few tens of minutes, with relatively large amplitudes of 0.2-0.4 mag in optical bands, and their rates of period changes are on the order of $10^{-7} yr^{-1}$ (both positive and negative). They are extremely rare objects and attempts to explain their origins and internal structures have attracted a great deal of attention. Previous studies have proposed that BLAPs may be pre-white dwarfs, with masses around $0.3M_\odot$, or core-helium-burning stars in the …
We present results of an ongoing study of the pulsational properties of sdB stellar models aimed at exploring the consequences of detailed chemical transitions for radial, $p-$ and $g-$ modes. In particular, we focus on the effects of diffusion at the H-He transition and of He-burning at the convective cores. We find that diffusion of He and H has a strong impact on the period spectrum of sdBVs stars, leading to less efficient mode trapping. Our results also suggests that asteroseismology of sdBVs stars might offer a very good opportunity to constrain extramixing processes in the He-burning co…
ZZ Ceti stars are pulsating white dwarfs with a carbon-oxygen core build up during the core helium burning and thermally pulsing Asymptotic Giant Branch phases. Through the interpretation of their pulsation periods by means of asteroseismology, details about their origin and evolution can be inferred. The whole pulsation spectrum exhibited by ZZ Ceti stars strongly depends on the inner chemical structure. At present, there are several processes affecting the chemical profiles that are still not accurately determined. We present a study of the impact of the current uncertainties of the white dw…
Asteroseismology of 1.0-2.0 Msun red giants by the Kepler satellite has enabled the first definitive measurements of interior rotation in both first ascent red giant branch (RGB) stars and those on the Helium burning clump. The inferred rotation rates are 10-30 days for the ~0.2Msun He degenerate cores on the RGB and 30-100 days for the He burning core in a clump star. Using the MESA code we calculate state-of-the-art stellar evolution models of low mass rotating stars from the zero-age main sequence to the cooling white dwarf (WD) stage. We include transport of angular momentum due to rotatio…
Blue large-amplitude pulsators (BLAPs) represent a new and rare class of hot pulsating stars with unusually large amplitudes and short periods. Up to now, only 24 confirmed BLAPs have been identified from more than one billion monitored stars, including a group with pulsation period longer than $\sim 20$ min (classical BLAPs, hereafter) and the other group with pulsation period below $\sim 8$ min. The evolutionary path that could give rise to such kinds of stellar configurations is unclear. Here we report on a comprehensive study of the peculiar BLAP discovered by the Tsinghua University - Ma …
Context. The nature of the recently identified "sdA" spectroscopic class of star is not well understood. The thousands of known sdAs have H-dominated spectra, spectroscopic surface gravities intermediate to main sequence stars and isolated white dwarfs, and effective temperatures below the lower limit for He-burning subdwarfs. Most are likely products of binary stellar evolution, whether extremely low-mass white dwarfs and their precursors, or blue stragglers in the halo. Aims. Stellar eigenfrequencies revealed through time series photometry of pulsating stars sensitively probe stellar structu…
The injection of hydrogen into the convection shell powered by helium burning during the core helium flash is commonly encountered during the evolution of metal-free and extremely metal-poor low-mass stars. With specifically designed multidimensional hydrodynamic simulations, we aim to prove that an entropy barrier is no obstacle for the growth of the helium-burning shell convection zone in the helium core of a metal-rich Pop I star, i.e. convection can penetrate into the hydrogen-rich layers for these stars, too. We further study whether this is also possible in one-dimensional stellar evolut…
We present new nonlinear, time-dependent convective hydrodynamical models of RR Lyrae stars computed assuming a constant helium-to-metal enrichment ratio and a broad range in metal abundances (Z=0.0001--0.02). The stellar masses and luminosities adopted to construct the pulsation models were fixed according to detailed central He burning Horizontal Branch evolutionary models. The pulsation models cover a broad range in stellar luminosity and effective temperatures and the modal stability is investigated for both fundamental and first overtones. We predict the topology of the instability strip …
We present UV through NIR broad-band photometry, and optical and NIR spectroscopy of Type Iax supernova 2012Z. The data set consists of both early and late-time observations, including the first late phase NIR spectrum obtained for a spectroscopically classified SN Iax. Simple model calculations of its bolometric light curve suggest SN 2012Z produced ~0.3 M_sun of (56)Ni, ejected about a Chandrasekhar mass of material, and had an explosion energy of ~10^51 erg, making it one of the brightest and most energetic SN Iax yet observed. The late phase NIR spectrum of SN 2012Z is found to broadly res…
The semi-regular variable star RU Vulpeculae (RU Vul) is being observed visually since 1935. Its pulsation period and amplitude are declining since $\sim1954$. A leading hypothesis to explain the period decrease in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars such as RU Vul is an ongoing flash of the He-burning shell, also called a thermal pulse (TP), inside the star. In this paper, we present a CCD photometric light curve of RU Vul, derive its fundamental parameters, and test if the TP hypothesis can describe the observed period decline. We use CCD photometry to determine the present-day pulsation per…
We seek signatures of the current experimental $^{12}$C$(α,γ)^{16}$O reaction rate probability distribution function in the pulsation periods of carbon-oxygen white dwarf models. We find that adiabatic g-modes trapped by the interior carbon-rich layer offer potentially useful signatures of this reaction rate probability distribution function. Probing the carbon-rich region is relevant because it forms during the evolution of low-mass stars under radiative helium burning conditions, mitigating the impact of convective mixing processes. We make direct quantitative connections between the pulsati…
Pulsating low-mass white dwarf stars are white dwarfs with stellar masses between 0.30~M$_{\odot}$ and 0.45~M$_{\odot}$ that show photometric variability due to gravity-mode pulsations. Within this mass range, they can harbour both a helium- and hybrid-core, depending if the progenitor experienced helium-core burning during the pre-white dwarf evolution. SDSS J115219.99$+$024814.4 is an eclipsing binary system where both components are low-mass white dwarfs, with stellar masses of 0.362$\pm$0.014~M$_{\odot}$ and 0.325$\pm$0.013~M$_{\odot}$. In particular, the less massive component is a pulsat…
Because of the large neutron excess of $^{22}$Ne, this isotope rapidly sediments in the interior of the white dwarfs. This process releases an additional amount of energy, thus delaying the cooling times of the white dwarf. This influences the ages of different stellar populations derived using white dwarf cosmochronology. Furthermore, the overabundance of $^{22}$Ne in the inner regions of the star, modifies the Brunt-Väisälä frequency, thus altering the pulsational properties of these stars. In this work, we discuss the impact of $^{22}$Ne sedimentation in white dwarfs resulting from Solar me…
Using high-cadence observations from the Zwicky Transient Facility at low Galactic latitudes, we have discovered a new class of pulsating, hot, compact stars. We have found four candidates, exhibiting blue colors ($g-r\leq-0.1$ mag), pulsation amplitudes of $>5\%$, and pulsation periods of $200 - 475$ sec. Fourier transforms of the lightcurves show only one dominant frequency. Phase-resolved spectroscopy for three objects reveals significant radial velocity, T$_{\rm eff}$ and log(g) variations over the pulsation cycle, consistent with large amplitude radial oscillations. The mean T$_{\rm eff}$…
We present new multi-band (UBVI) time-series data of helium burning variables in the Carina dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The current sample includes 92 RR Lyrae-six of them are new identifications-and 20 Anomalous Cepheids, one of which is new identification. The analysis of the Bailey diagram shows that the luminosity amplitude of the first overtone component in double-mode variables is located along the long-period tail of regular first overtone variables, while the fundamental component is located along the short-period tale of regular fundamental variables. This evidence further supports the t…
The aim of this work is to identify and explain the necessary conditions required for an energetic explosion of a Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf. We construct and analyze weakly compressible turbulence models with nuclear burning effects for carbon/oxygen plasma at a density expected for deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT) to occur. We observe formation of carbon deflagrations and transient carbon detonations at early times. As turbulence becomes increasingly inhomogeneous, sustained carbon detonations are initiated by the Zel'dovich reactivity gradient mechanism. The fuel is suitably …
