The high-spin rotational bands in odd-$Z$ nuclei $^{159}$Ho ($Z=67$) are investigated using the cranked shell model with the pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving method, in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. The experimental moments of inertia and alignments and their variations with the rotational frequency $\hbarω$ are reproduced very well by the calculations. The splitting between the signature partners of the yrast band $7/2^-[523]$ is discussed and the splitting of the excited band $7/2^+[404]$ above $\hbarω\sim 0.30$~MeV is predicted due to the level crossing with $1/2^+[411]$. The calculated $B(E2)$ transition probabilities are also suggested for future experiments.
The high-spin rotational properties of two-quasiparticle bands in the doubly-odd ${}^{166}$Ta are analyzed using the cranked shell model with pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving method, in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. The experimental moments of inertia and alignments and their variations with the rotational frequency $\hbarω$ are reproduced very well by the particle-number conserving calculations, which provides a reliable support to the configuration assignments in previous works for these bands. The backbendings in these two-quasipartic…
The recently observed two high-spin rotational bands in the proton emitter $^{113}$Cs are investigated using the cranked shell model with pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving method, in which the Pauli blocking effects are taken into account exactly. By using the configuration assignments of band 1 ($π3/2^+[422], α= -1/2$) and band 2 ($π1/2^+[420], α= 1/2$), the experimental moments of inertia and quasiparticle alignments can be well reproduced by the present calculations, which in turn strongly support these configuration assignments. Furthermore, by analyzing the occu…
The recently observed high-spin rotational bands in odd-$A$ nuclei $^{247, 249}$Cm and $^{249}$Cf [Tandel \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. C 82 (2010) 041301R] are investigated by using the cranked shell model (CSM) with the pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving (PNC) method in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. The experimental moments of inertia and alignments and their variations with the rotational frequency $ω$ are reproduced very well by the PNC-CSM calculations. By examining the $ω$-dependence of the occupation probability of each cranked Nilsso…
A particle number conserving BCS approach (FBCS) is formulated in the relativistic mean field (RMF) model. It is shown that the so-obtained RMF+FBCS model can describe the weak pairing limit. We calculate the ground-state properties of the calcium isotopes $^{32-74}$Ca and compare the results with those obtained from the usual RMF+BCS model. Although the results are quite similar to each other, we observe an interesting phenomenon, i.e., for $^{54}$Ca, the FBCS approach can enhance the occupation probability of the $2p_{1/2}$ single particle level and slightly increases its radius, compared wi…
The particle-number conserving method based on the cranked shell model is adopted to investigate the possible antimagnetic rotation bands in $^{100}$Pd. The experimental kinematic and dynamic moments of inertia, together with the $B(E2)$ values are reproduced quite well. The occupation probability of each neutron and proton orbital in the observed antimagnetic rotation band is analyzed and its configuration is confirmed. The contribution of each major shell to the total angular momentum alignment with rotational frequency in the lowest-lying positive and negative parity bands is analyzed. The …
We present a number conserving particle-hole RPA theory for collective excitations in the transition from normal to superfluid nuclei. The method derives from an RPA theory developed long ago in quantum chemistry using antisymmetric geminal powers, or equivalently number projected HFB states, as reference states. We show within a minimal model of pairing plus monopole interactions that the number conserving particle-hole RPA excitations evolve smoothly across the superfluid phase transition close to the exact results, contrary to particle-hole RPA in the normal phase and quasiparticle RPA in t…
An exact, number-conserving solution to the generalized, orbit-dependent pairing problem is derived by introducing an infinite-dimensional algebra. A method for obtaining eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the corresponding Hamiltonian is also given. The relevance of the orbit-dependent pairing solution is demonstrated by comparing predictions of the model with shell-model calculations.
In the present work the so-called Higher Tamm-Dancoff Apporximation method is presented for the generalized case of isovector and isoscalar residual interactions treated simultaneously. The role of different particle-hole excitations and of proton-neutron pairing correlations in the ground state of the self-conjugate 64Ge nucleus is discussed.
The rotational bands in nuclei with $Z \approx 100$ are investigated systematically by using a cranked shell model (CSM) with the pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving (PNC) method, in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. By fitting the experimental single-particle spectra in these nuclei, a new set of Nilsson parameters ($κ$ and $μ$) and deformation parameters ($\varepsilon_2$ and $\varepsilon_4$) are proposed. The experimental kinematic moments of inertia for the rotational bands in even-even, odd-$A$ and odd-odd nuclei, and the bandhead energies …
Based on the reflection-asymmetric Nilsson potential, the parity-doublet rotational bands in odd-$A$ isotones \element{237}U and \element{239}Pu have been investigated by using the particle-number-conserving (PNC) method in the framework of the cranked shell model (CSM). The experimental kinematic moments of inertia (MOIs) and angular momentum alignments are reproduced very well by the PNC-CSM calculations. The significant differences of rotational properties between \element{237}U and \element{239}Pu are explained with the contribution of nucleons occupying proton octupole-correlation pairs o…
The particle-number conserving (PNC) method in the framework of cranked shell model (CSM) is developed to deal with the reflection-asymmetric nuclear system by applying the $S_x$ symmetry. Based on an octupole-deformed Nilsson potential, the alternating-parity bands in \element{236,238}{U} and \element{238,240}{Pu} are investigated. The experimental kinematic moments of inertia (MoI) and the angular momentum alignments of all studied bands are reproduced well in the PNC-CSM calculations. The striking difference of rotational behaviors between U and Pu isotopes can be linked to the strength of …
The rotational properties of the neutron rich Nd and Sm isotopes with mass number $A\approx150$ are systematically investigated using the cranked shell model with pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving method, in which the Pauli blocking effects are taken into account exactly. The 2-quasiparticle states in even-even Nd and Sm isotopes with excitation energies lower than 2.5~MeV are systematically calculated. The available data can be well reproduced and some possible 2 and 4-quasiparticle isomers are also suggested for future experiments. The experimentally observed rotat…
We study the interplay of quadrupole and octupole degrees of freedom in the structure of the isotope $^{144}$Ba. A symmetry conserving configuration mixing method (SCCM) based on a Gogny energy density functional (EDF) has been used. The method includes particle number, parity and angular momentum restoration as well as axial quadrupole and octupole shape mixing within the generator coordinate method. Predictions both for excitation energies and electromagnetic transition probabilities are in good agreement with the most recent experimental data.
The shell correction method is revisited. Contrary to the traditional Strutinsky method, the shell energy is evaluated by an averaging over the number of particles and not over the single-particle energies, which is more consistent with the definition of the macroscopic energy. In addition, the smooth background is subtracted before averaging the sum of single-particle energies, which significantly improves the plateau condition and allows to apply the method also for nuclei close to the proton or neutron drip lines. A significant difference between the shell correction energy obtained with th…
We calculate the isospin-mixing parameter for several Tz=-1, Tz=0 and Tz=1 nuclei from Mg to Sn in the particle-number conserving Higher Tamm-Dancoff approach taking into account the pairing correlations. In particular we investigate the role of the Coulomb interaction and the |Tz|=1 pairing correlations. To do so the HTDA approach is implemented with the SIII Skyrme effective nucleon-nucleon interaction in the mean-field channel and a delta interaction in the pairing channel. We conclude from this investigation that the pairing correlations bring a large contribution to isospin-symmetry break…
The structures of two observed high-spin rotational bands in the doubly-odd nucleus ${}^{168}$Ta are investigated using the cranked shell model with pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving method, in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. The experimental moments of inertia and alignments are reproduced very well by the calculations, which confirms the configuration assignments for these two bands in previous works. The backbending and upbending mechanisms in these two bands are analyzed in detail by calculating the occupation probabilities of each orbi…
The ground state band was recently observed in the superheavy nucleus 256Rf. We study the rotational properties of 256Rf and its neighboring even-even nuclei by using a cranked shell model (CSM) with the pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving (PNC) method in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. The kinematic and dynamic moments of inertia of the ground state bands in these nuclei are well reproduced by the theory. The spin of the lowest observed state in 256Rf is determined by comparing the experimental kinematic moments of inertia with the PNC-CSM c…
The recently observed two and four-quasiparticle high-spin rotational bands in the odd-odd nuclei $^{166, 168, 170, 172}$Re are investigated using the cranked shell model with pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving method. The experimental moments of inertia and alignments can be reproduced well by the present calculation if appropriate bandhead spins and configurations are assigned for these bands, which in turn confirms their spin and configuration assignments. It is found that the bandhead spins of those two rotational bands observed in $^{166}$Re~[Li {\it et al.}, Phy…
Two-quasiparticle bands and low-lying excited high-$K$ four-, six-, and eight-quasiparticle bands in the doubly-odd ${}^{174, 176}$Lu are analyzed by using the cranked shell model (CSM) with the pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving (PNC) method, in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. The proton and neutron Nilsson level schemes for ${}^{174, 176}$Lu are taken from the adjacent odd-$A$ Lu and Hf isotopes, which are adopted to reproduce the experimental bandhead energies of the one-quasiproton and one-quasineutron bands of these odd-$A$ Lu and Hf nu…
Mixing single and triple fermions an exact killing operator of the Coupled Cluster Doubles (CCD) wave function with good symmetry was found in \cite{Tohy13}. Using these operators with the equation of motion (EOM) method the so-called self-consistent odd particle number random phase approximation (odd-RPA) was set up. Together with the stationarity condition of the two body density matrix it is shown that the killing conditions allow to reduce the order of correlation functions contained in the matrix elements of the odd-RPA equations to a fully self consistent equation for the single particle…
We reexamine the derivation of relativistic transport equations for fermions when conserving the most general spinor structure of the interaction and Green function. Such an extension of the formalism is needed when dealing with {\it e.g.} spin-polarized nuclear matter or non-parity conserving interactions. It is shown that some earlier derivations can lead to an incomplete description of the evolution of the system even in the case of parity-conserving, spin-saturated systems. The concepts of kinetic equation and mass shell condition have to be extended, in particular both of them acquire a n…
We report the first calculations of nuclear properties near the drip-lines using the spherical Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mean-field theory with a finite-range force supplemented by continuum and particle number projection effects. Calculations were carried out in a basis made of the eigenstates of a Woods-Saxon potential computed in a box, thereby garanteeing that continuum effects were properly taken into account. Projection of the self-consistent solutions on good particle number was carried out after variation, and an approximation of the variation after projection result was used. We give th…
A microscopic theory for nuclear pairing is proposed through the generalized density matrix formalism. The analytical equations are as simple as that of the BCS theory, and could be solved within a similar computer time. The current theory conserves the exact particle number, and is valid at arbitrary pairing strength (including those below the BCS critical strength). These are the two main advantages over the conventional BCS theory. The theory is also of interests to other mesoscopic systems.
We present an approach for the calculation of odd-nuclei with exact self-consistent blocking and particle number and angular momentum projection with the finite range density dependent Gogny force. As an application we calculate the nucleus $^{31}$Mg at the border of the $N=20$ inversion island. We evaluate the ground state properties, the excited states and the transition probabilities. In general we obtain a good description of the measured observables.
Experimentally observed ground state band based on the $1/2^{-}[521]$ Nilsson state and the first exited band based on the $7/2^{-}[514]$ Nilsson state in the odd-$Z$ nucleus $^{255}$Lr are studied by the cranked shell model (CSM) with the paring correlations treated by the particle-number-conserving (PNC) method. This is the first time the detailed theoretical investigations being performed on these rotational bands. Both the experimental kinematic and dynamic moment of inertia ($\mathcal{J}^{(1)}$ and $\mathcal{J}^{(2)}$) versus rotational frequency are reproduced quite well by the PNC-CSM c…
