Our understanding of the Universe is known to be incomplete and new gauge forces beyond those of the Standard Model might be crucial to describing its observed properties. A minimal and well-motivated possibility is a pure Yang-Mills non-Abelian dark gauge force with no direct connection to the Standard Model. We determine here the relic abundances of the glueball bound states that arise in such theories and investigate their cosmological effects. Glueballs are first formed in a confining phase transition, and their relic densities are set by a network of annihilation and transfer reactions. The lightest glueball has no lighter states to annihilate into, and its yield is set mainly by 3 to 2 number-changing processes which persistently release energy into the glueball gas during freeze-out. The abundances of the heavier glueballs are dominated by 2 to 2 transfer reactions, and tend to be much smaller than the lightest state. We also investigate potential connectors between the dark force and the Standard Model that allow some or all of the dark glueballs to decay. If the connection is weak, the lightest glueball can be very long-lived or stable and is a viable dark matter candidate. For stronger connections, the lightest glueball will decay quickly but other heavier glueball states can remain stable and contribute to the dark matter density.
We point out a unique mechanism to produce the relic abundance for glueball dark matter from a gauged $SU(N)_d$ hidden sector which is bridged to the standard model sector through heavy vectorlike quarks colored under gauge interactions from both sides. A necessary ingredient of our assumption is that the vectorlike quarks, produced either thermally or non-thermally, are abundant enough to dominate the universe for some time in the early universe. They later undergo dark color confinement and form unstable vectorlike-quarkonium states which annihilate decay and reheat the visible and dark sect…
The presence of Kaluza-Klein particles in the universe is a potential manifestation of string theory cosmology. In general, they can be present in the high temperature bath of the early universe. In particular examples, string theory inflation often ends with brane-antibrane annihilation followed by the energy cascading through massive closed string loops to KK modes which then decay into lighter standard model particles. However, massive KK modes in the early universe may become dangerous cosmological relics if the inner manifold contains warped throat(s) with approximate isometries. In the c…
The Abelian decomposition of QCD which decomposes the gluons to the color neutral binding gluons (the neurons) and the colored valence gluons (the chromons) gauge independently naturally generalizes the quark model to the quark and chromon model which could play the central role in hadron spectroscopy. We discuss the color reflection symmetry, the fundamental symmetry of the quark and chromon model, and explain how it describes the glueballs and the glueball-quarkonium mixing in QCD. We present the numerical analysis of glueball-quarkonium mixing in $0^{++}$, $2^{++}$, and $0^{-+}$ sectors bel…
We revisit the possibility that Dark Matter is composed of stable scalar glueballs of a confining dark ${\rm SU}(3)$ gauge theory coupled only to gravity. The relic abundance of dark glueballs is studied for the first time in a thermal effective theory accounting for strong-coupling dynamics. An important ingredient of our analysis is the use of an effective potential for glueballs that is fitted by lattice simulations. We predict the relic abundance to be in the range $0.12ζ_{T}^{-3}Λ/(137.9 {\rm eV}) \lesssim Ωh^{2}\lesssim 0.12ζ_{T}^{-3}Λ/(82.7 {\rm eV})$, with $Λ$ being the confinement sca…
There is strong evidence in favor of the idea that dark matter is self interacting, with the cross section-to-mass ratio $σ/ m \sim 1\,\mathrm{cm^2/g} \sim 1\,\mathrm{barn/GeV}$. We show that viable models of dark matter with this large cross section are straightforwardly realized with non-Abelian hidden sectors. In the simplest of such models, the hidden sector is a pure gauge theory, and the dark matter is composed of hidden glueballs with a mass around $100\,\mathrm{MeV}$. Alternatively, the hidden sector may be a supersymmetric pure gauge theory with a $\sim 10\,\mathrm{TeV}$ gluino therma…
Hidden sector glueball dark matter is well motivated by string theory, compactifications of which often have extra gauge groups uncoupled to the visible sector. We study the dynamics of glueballs in theories with a period of late time primordial matter domination followed by a low final reheating temperature due to a gravitationally coupled modulus. Compared to scenarios with a high reheating temperature, the required relic abundance is possible with higher hidden sector confinement scales, and less extreme differences in the entropy densities of the hidden and visible sectors. Both of these c…
We address a study of glueball masses in the confining regime of SU(2) in D=3 using an algorithm inspired by the multi-level scheme. Our method, which exploits the locality of the action to achieve high precision results, is based on a technique already used for compact QED, and generalises it to the non-Abelian case. We discuss the main features of this method, in comparison with other algorithms that have been used in similar studies.
It has been shown that a first order confinement phase transition can drastically change the relic dark matter abundance in confining dark sectors with only heavy dark quarks. We study the phenomenology of one such model with a Z' portal to Standard Model. We find that dark glueballs are long-lived in this setup and dilute the dark matter abundance after their decay to Standard Model. With this effect, the correct relic abundance is obtained with dark matter masses up to $\mathcal{O}(10^6)$~TeV. We find that while a part of the parameter space is already ruled out by direct detection and colli…
We generalize the dispersive approach to axial anomaly by A.D. Dolgov and V.I. Zakharov to a non-Abelian case with arbitrary photon virtualites. We derive the anomaly sum rule for the singlet current and obtain the $π^0,η,η'\rightarrowγγ^*$ transition form factors. Using them, we established the behavior of a nonperturbative gluon matrix element $\langle 0 |G\tilde{G} |γγ^*(q^2) \rangle$ in both spacelike and timelike regions. We found a significant contribution of the non-Abelian axial anomaly to the processes with one virtual photon, comparable to that of the electromagnetic anomaly. The dua…
A qualitative study of the lightest glueball states in Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge is presented. The analysis is done by generalizing to the maximal Abelian gauge the so-called replica model, already successfully introduced in the Landau gauge. As it will be shown, the gluon and ghost propagators obtained from the replica model are of the same type of those already introduced in Phys. Rev. D77, 105023 (2008) [arXiv:0801.0566], whose behavior turns out to be in agreement with that available from the lattice data on the maximal Abelian gauge. The mode…
Non-Abelian dark gauge forces that do not couple directly to ordinary matter may be realized in nature. The minimal form of such a dark force is a pure Yang-Mills theory. If the dark sector is reheated in the early universe, it will be realized as a set of dark gluons at high temperatures and as a collection of dark glueballs at lower temperatures, with a cosmological phase transition from one form to the other. Despite being dark, the gauge fields of the new force can connect indirectly to the Standard Model through non-renormalizable operators. These operators will transfer energy between th…
We consider a simple supersymmetric hidden sector: pure SU(N) gauge theory. Dark matter is made up of hidden glueballinos with mass $m_X$ and hidden glueballs with mass near the confinement scale $Λ$. For $m_X \sim 1\,\text{TeV}$ and $Λ\sim 100\,\text{MeV}$, the glueballinos freeze out with the correct relic density and self-interact through glueball exchange to resolve small-scale structure puzzles. An immediate consequence is that the glueballino spectrum has a hyperfine splitting of order $Λ^2 / m_X \sim 10\,\text{keV}$. We show that the radiative decays of the excited state can explain the…
We investigate the possibility that the dark matter candidate is from a pure non-abelian gauge theory of the hidden sector, motivated in large part by its elegance and simplicity. The dark matter is the lightest bound state made of the confined gauge fields, the hidden glueball. We point out this simple setup is capable of providing rich and novel phenomena in the dark sector, especially in the parameter space of large N. They include self-interacting and warm dark matter scenarios, Bose-Einstein condensation leading to massive dark stars possibly millions of times heavier than our sun giving …
Several proposals for dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking and fermion mass generation involve strong gauge interactions with a characteristic scale of a few hundred GeV. The detection of the glueballs which should occur in such models would be a indication of the non-Abelian nature of the gauge theories operating at this scale. We discuss signatures for these particles.
A hidden sector with pure non-abelian gauge symmetry is an elegant and just about the simplest model of dark matter. In this model the dark matter candidate is the lightest bound state made of the confined gauge fields, the dark glueball. In spite of its simplicity, the model has been shown to have several interesting non-standard implications in cosmology. In this work, we explore the gravitational waves from binary boson stars made of self-gravitating dark glueball fields as a natural and important consequence. We derive the dark SU($N$) star mass and radius as functions of the only two fund…
We discuss properties of non-Abelian gauge theories that change significantly across the lower edge of the conformal window. Their probes are the topological observables, the meson spectrum and the scalar glueball operator. The way these quantities change tells about the way conformal symmetry is lost.
A scalar model of glueball is considered. The model is based on two scalar fields approximation for SU(3) non-Abelian Lagrangian. The approach to approximation makes use of the assumption that 2 and 4-points Green's functions are described in terms of some two scalar fields. The model is described via non-perturbative method due to value of coupling constant, which does not permit us using of Feynman diagrams and therefore of perturbative methods. Asymptotical behaviour of the scalar fields are obtained. Profiles of these fileds calculated for a range of values of a parameter of the problem is…
We perform a complete next-to-leading order calculation of the non-Abelian electric field correlator in a SU($N_c$) plasma, which encodes properties of the plasma relevant for heavy particle bound state formation and dissociation, and is different from the correlator for the heavy quark diffusion coefficient. The calculation is carried out in the real-time formalism of thermal field theory and includes both vacuum and finite temperature contributions. By working in the $R_ξ$ gauge, we explicitly show the results are gauge independent, infrared and collinear safe. The renormalization group equa…
We consider a non-Abelian gauge theory with $N_f$ fermions and discuss the possible existence of a non-trivial UV fixed point at large $N_f$. Specifically, we study the anomalous dimension of the (rescaled) glueball operator $\text{Tr}\ F^2$ to first order in $1/N_f$ by relating it to the derivative of the beta function at the fixed point. At the fixed point the anomalous dimension violates its unitarity bound and so the (rescaled) glueball operator is either decoupled or the fixed point does not exist. We also study the anomalous dimensions of the two spin-$1/2$ baryon operators to first orde…
In anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) models, superpartner masses are proportional to couplings squared. Their hidden sectors therefore naturally contain WIMPless dark matter, particles whose thermal relic abundance is guaranteed to be of the correct size, even though they are not weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs). We study viable dark matter candidates in WIMPless AMSB models with non-Abelian hidden sectors and highlight unusual possibilities that emerge in even the simplest models. In one example with a pure SU(N) hidden sector, stable hidden gluinos freeze out with th…
We investigate scenarios in which a charged, long-lived scalar particle decouples from the primordial plasma in the Early Universe. We compute the number density at time of freeze-out considering both the cases of abelian and non-abelian interactions and including the effect of Sommerfeld enhancement at low initial velocity. We also discuss as extreme case the maximal cross section that fulfils the unitarity bound. We then compare these number densities to the exotic nuclei searches for stable relics and to the BBN bounds on unstable relics and draw conclusions for the cases of a stau or stop …
The glueballs lead to gluon and QCD monopole condensations as by-products of color confinement. A color dielectric function $G(|ϕ|)$ coupled with Abelian gauge field is properly defined to mediate the glueball interactions at confining regime after {\it spontaneous symmetry breaking} (SSB) of the gauge symmetry. The particles are expected to form through quark gluon plasma (QGP) hadronization phase where the free quarks and gluons start clamping together to form hadrons. The QCD-like vacuum $\langleη^2m_η^2F^{μν}F_{μν}\rangle$, confining potential $V_c(r)$, string tension $σ$, penetration dept…
We discuss a model based on dark sector described by non-Abelian $SU(2)_D$ gauge symmetry where we introduce $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_D$ bi-doublet vector-like leptons to generate active neutrino masses and kinetic mixing between $SU(2)_D$ and $U(1)_Y$ gauge fields at one-loop level. After spontaneous symmetry breaking of $SU(2)_D$, we have remnant $Z_4$ symmetry guaranteeing stability of dark matter candidates. We formulate neutrino mass matrix and related lepton flavor violating processes and discus dark matter physics estimating relic density. It is found that our model realize multicomponent …
We illustrate the structure and the main phenomenological features of a supersymmetric model (the USSM-A) built following a bottom-up approach and containing an anomalous abelian gauge symmetry. This model supports a gauged axion in its spectrum and provides a generalization of the global (supersymmetric) Peccei-Quinn construction. Complete simulations of the neutralino relic density are performed. Bounds from CAST and WMAP, combined with dark matter simulations, provide significant constraints on the scale of the interactions between the axion and the gauge fields.
We study the cosmology of the dark sector consisting of (ultra) light scalars. Since the scalar mass is radiatively unstable, a special explanation is required to make the mass much smaller than the UV scale. There are two well-known mechanisms for the origin of scalar mass. The scalar can be identified as a pseudo-Goldstone boson, whose shift symmetry is explicitly broken by non-perturbative corrections, like the axion. Alternatively, it can be identified as a composite particle like the glueball, whose mass is limited by the confinement scale of the theory. In both cases, the scalar can be n…
We study the nonperturbative QCD in terms of topological objects, i.e., QCD-monopoles and instantons. In the 't Hooft abelian gauge, QCD is reduced into an abelian gauge theory with QCD-monopoles, and the confinement mechanism can be understood with the dual superconductor picture. Regarding the flux-tube ring as the glueball, we study the glueball properties by combining the dual Ginzburg-Landau theory and the Nambu-Goto action. We find the strong correlations between instantons and monopole world-lines both in the continuum theory and in the lattice QCD. The nonperturbative QCD vacuum is fil…
The non-Abelian nature of QCD suggests that particles that have a gluon constituent, such as glueballs or hybrids, should exist. Experiments WA76, WA91 and WA102 have performed a dedicated search for these states in central production using the CERN Omega Spectrometer. New results from central production show that there is a kinematical filter which can select out glueball candidates from known qqbar states. A further study of this at high energies is essential in order to get information on the M(X0) > 2 GeV region. This paper describes how this could be done using the the ALICE detector at t…
We demonstrate electric-magnetic duality in N=1 supersymmetric non-Abelian gauge theories in four dimensions by presenting two different gauge theories (different gauge groups and quark representations) leading to the same non-trivial long distance physics. The quarks and gluons of one theory can be interpreted as solitons (non-Abelian magnetic monopoles) of the elementary fields of the other theory. The weak coupling region of one theory is mapped to a strong coupling region of the other. When one of the theories is Higgsed by an expectation value of a squark, the other theory is confined. Ma…
We present a novel study of the non-abelian vector dark matter candidate $W^\prime$ with a MeV$-$GeV low mass range, accompanied by a dark photon $A^\prime$ and a dark $Z^\prime$ of similar masses in the context of a simplified gauged two-Higgs-doublet model. The model is scrutinized by taking into account various experimental constraints including dark photon searches, electroweak precision data, relic density of dark matter together with its direct and indirect searches, mono-jet and Higgs collider physics from LHC. The viable parameter space of the model consistent with all experimental and…
We present clear numerical evidence for string breaking in three-dimensional SU(2) gauge theory with fundamental bosonic matter through a mixing analysis between Wilson loops and meson operators representing bound states of a static source and a dynamical scalar. The breaking scale is calculated in the continuum limit. In units of the lightest glueball we find $r_{\rm b} m_G\approx13.6$. The implications of our results for QCD are discussed.

We show that the recently reported anomalies in $b\to sμ^+μ^-$ transitions, as well as the long-standing $g_μ-2$ discrepancy, can be addressed simultaneously by a new massive abelian gauge boson with loop-induced coupling to muons. Such a scenario typically leads to a stable dark matter candidate with a thermal relic density close to the observed value. Dark matter in our model couples dominantly to leptons, hence signals in direct detection experiments lie well below the current sensitivity. The LHC, in combination with indirect detection searches, can test this scenario through distinctive s…
The dynamics of the glueballs is important in the context of the experimental search as well as for understanding the non-Abelian gauge theory. The glueballs of the dark $SU(N_c)$ Yang-Mills theory are also good candidates of dark matter. In this proceedings contribution, we report on the result of the lattice calculation of the interglueball potential of the Yang-Mills theory with the color numbers $N_c=2,3,4$, with a detailed inspection of the systematics due to the discretization.
We add fermions to an abelian-gauged hidden sector. We show that the lightest can be the dark matter with the right thermal relic abundance, and discovery is within reach of upcoming dark matter detectors. We also show that these fermions change Higgs boson phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and in particular could induce a large invisible width to the lightest Higgs boson state. Such an invisibly decaying Higgs boson can be discovered with good significance in the vector boson fusion channel at the LHC.
We propose a dark matter model in which the dark sector is gauged under a new SU(2) group. The dark sector consists of SU(2) dark gauge fields, two triplet dark Higgs fields, and two dark fermion doublets (dark matter candidates in this model). The dark sector interacts with the SM sector through kinetic and mass mixing operators. The model explains both PAMELA and Fermi LAT data very well and also satisfies constraints from both the DM relic density and Standard Model precision observables. The phenomenology of the model at the LHC is also explored.
SU(N) Lie algebras possess discrete symmetries which can lead naturally to stable vector dark matter (DM). In this work, we consider the possibility that the dark SU(N) sector couples to the visible sector through the Higgs portal. We find that minimal CP-conserving hidden `Higgs sectors' entail stable massive gauge fields which fall into the WIMP category of dark matter candidates. For SU(N), N>2, DM consists of three components, two of which are degenerate in mass. In all of the cases, there are substantial regions of parameter space where the direct and indirect detection as well as relic a…

We consider a model with Sp dark gauge group and a scalar field in the fundamental representation, which leads to two co-stable DM candidates at the perturbative level thanks to a global U(1) accidental symmetry. After gauge confinement at low energy scale, only one of the two candidates is still stable. We compute the DM relic abundance by solving the Boltzmann equations numerically. The presence of light dark glueballs gives extra cosmological effects and can affect Higgs physics. We study the DM phenomenology, providing the predictions for direct and indirect detection (including the Sommer…
The mystery of dark matter remains an unsettled problem of particle physics. On top of that, experiments show a persistent contention of the muon anomalous magnetic moment (AMM) relative to the Standard Model (SM) prediction. In this work, we consider the possibility of extending the SM with a non-Abelian gauge symmetry $SU(2)_X$, under which SM leptons transform non-trivially. SM leptons receive corrections to their AMMs of right order via one-loop processes mediated by beyond SM (BSM) fermions required to cancel anomalies, and BSM gauge bosons that play the role of dark matter. We show that …
It has been suggested recently that self-interacting dark matter fits better the observational characteristics of galaxy dynamics. We propose that the self-interacting dark matter is composed from the glueballs of the hidden sector non-Abelian gauge group, while the hidden matter states exist in vector-like representation and decouple from the light spectrum. It is shown that these glueballs are semi-stable with the life-time larger than the present age of the Universe, if their mass is 1 GeV or less. The constraint on their abundance today suggests that the energy was stored in the hidden sec…
We discuss one loop generation of the term connecting gauge fields from a local hidden $SU(2)_H$ and the standard model $U(1)_Y$ introducing an $SU(2)_H$ doublet fermion with non-zero hypercharge and a scalar field in adjoint representation. Then we obtain a kinetic mixing term between $SU(2)_H$ and $U(1)_Y$ gauge fields after the adjoint scalar field developing vacuum expectation value. We illustrate such a concrete scenario introducing a dark matter model in an ultraviolet (UV) completion with local $SU(2)_H$ symmetry where the scalar doublet is our dark matter candidate and its stability is…
We consider the cosmology and phenomenology of a dark photon portal to a simple dark sector consisting of a single, light, fermionic dark matter particle species with mass in the MeV range. We entertain three possible kinetic mixing structures of a new Abelian gauge group U(1)$_{\text{dark}}$ with the visible sector through U(1)$_{\text{e.m.}}$, U(1)$_{\text{Y}}$ and T[SU(2)$_{\text{L}}$]. We assume the dark photon to be massive and around the MeV scale, thus close to the mass scale of the dark matter candidate. We compute the dark matter relic density via freeze-out and freeze-in, entertainin…
Recent analysis of spontaneous breaking of SU(2) as a continuous gauged flavor symmetry to non-abelian discrete group Q4 as a residual symmetry motivates its consideration as a group for stabilizing dark matter. We determine the region of hidden sector particles compatible with relic dark matter density and present prospects in which these particles could be observed using direct and indirect dark matter search experiments.
We propose a novel probe of weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter (DM) candidates of a wide mass range which fall short of the required annihilation rates to satisfy correct thermal relic abundance, dubbed as \textit{Miracle-less WIMP}. If the DM interactions are mediated by an Abelian gauge boson like B-L, its annihilation rates typically remain smaller than the WIMP ballpark for very high scale B-L symmetry breaking, leading to overproduction. The thermally overproduced relic is brought within observed limits via late entropy dilution from one of the three right handed neutr…
New Abelian U(1)' gauge bosons $V_μ$ can couple to the Standard Model through mixing of the associated field strength tensor $V_{μν}$ with the one from hypercharge, $F_{μν}^Y$. Here we consider early Universe sensitivity to this vector portal and show that the effective mixing parameter with the photon, $κ$, is being probed for vector masses in the GeV ballpark down to values $10^{-10} \lesssim κ\lesssim 10^{-14}$ where no terrestrial probes exist. The ensuing constraints are based on a detailed calculation of the vector relic abundance and an in-depth analysis of relevant nucleosynthesis proc…
The non-Abelian nature of QCD suggests that particles that have a gluon constituent, such as glueballs or hybrids, should exist. This paper presents a study of central meson production in the fixed target experiments WA76, WA91 and WA102 at the CERN Omega spectrometer at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s} = 12.7$, 23.8 and 29~GeV. A study of the resonance production cross section as a function of $\sqrt{s}$ shows which states are compatible with being produced by Double Pomeron Exchange (DPE). In these DPE processes, the difference in the transverse momentum between the exchange particles ($…

We consider classically scale-invariant extensions of the Standard Model (CSI ESM) which stabilise the Higgs potential and have good dark matter candidates. In this framework all mass scales, including electroweak and dark matter masses, are generated dynamically and have a common origin. We consider Abelian and non-Abelian hidden sectors portally coupled to the SM with and without a real singlet scalar. We perform a careful analysis of RG running to determine regions in the parameter space where the SM Higgs vacuum is stabilised. After combining this with the LHC Higgs constraints, in models …
