This paper studies the whole process of gravitational collapse and accretion of a massless scalar field in asymptotically flat spacetime. Two kinds of initial configurations are considered. One is the initial data without black hole, the other contains a black hole. Under suitable initial conditions, we find that multi-horizon will appear, which means that the initial black hole formed by gravitational collapse or existing at the beginning will instantly expand and suddenly grow, rather than grows gradually in the accretion process. A new type of critical behavior is found around the instant expansion. The numerical computation shows that the critical exponents are universal.
This paper studies the perturbations of the continuously self-similar critical solution of the gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field (Roberts solution). The perturbation equations are derived and solved exactly. The perturbation spectrum is found to be not discrete, but occupying continuous region of the complex plane. The renormalization group calculation gives the value of the mass-scaling exponent equal to 1.
We investigate the dynamics of homogeneous gravitational collapse of a massless vector field in the presence of a positive cosmological constant $Λ$. The corresponding density function $ρ(a)$ obtained for the massless vector field is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the scale factor $a (t)$. The variation of the scale factor shows that for $0\, \leΛ< 1$, we obtain the gravitational collapse of the vector fields leading singularity formation in a {\it finite} comoving time resulting in a {\it Blackhole} such that with increasing $Λ$, the singularity formation time, $t_s$ increases.…
We examine a one-parameter family of analytical solutions representing spherically symmetric collapse of a nonlinear massless scalar field with self-interaction in an asymptotically flat spacetime. The time evolution exhibits a type of critical behavior. Depending on the scalar charge parameter $q$ as compared to a critical value $q^*$, the incoming scalar wave collapses either to a globally naked central singularity if $q<q^*$ (weak field) or to a scalar-hairy black hole if $q>q^*$ (strong field), both having finite asymptotic masses. Near the critical evolution, the black hole mass follows a…
We study the spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of massless scalar matter field in asymptotic flat spacetime in $f(R)$ gravity. In the Einstein frame of $f(R)$ gravity, an additional scalar field arises due to the conformal transformation. We find that besides the usual competition between gravitational energy and kinetic energy in the process of gravitational collapse, the new scalar field brought by the conformal transformation adds one more competing force in the dynamical system. The dynamical competition can be controlled by tuning the amplitudes of the initial perturbations of …
The 2+1-dimensional geodesic circularly symmetric solutions of Einstein-massless-scalar field equations with negative cosmological constant are found and their local and global properties are studied. It is found that one of them represents gravitational collapse where black holes are always formed.
We study the collapse of a massless scalar field coupled to gravity. A class of blackhole solutions are identified. We also report on a class of solutions where collapse starts from a regular spacelike surface but then the collapsing scalar field freezes. As a result, in these solutions, a black hole does not form, neither is there any singularity in the future.
We study here the evolution of a massless scalar field in a spacetime, developing from a regular initial spacelike surface. The Einstein equations and regularity and boundary conditions governing the same are specified. Both homogeneous and inhomogeneous collapse models are considered and we analyze when the occurrence of singularity will be simultaneous or otherwise. In the inhomogeneous collapse case, we characterize a wide family of black hole solutions arising in scalar field collapse. We also discuss the possibility of existence of classes of non-singular models where collapse could almos…
In this paper, we investigate the massless Reissner-Nordstrom de Sitter metric in the context of minimal length scenarios. We prove not only the confinement of the energy density of massless charged particles, both fermions and bosons, but also their ability to tunnel through the cosmological horizon. These massless particles might be interacting with Dirac sea and in this case they will appear outside the cosmological horizon in the context of dS/CFT holography. This result may formulate a fundamental reason for the expansion of the Dirac sea. Therefore, a spacetime Big Crunch may occur.
In a recent paper, Hod started a study on no scalar hair theorem for asymptotically flat spherically symmetric neutral horizonless reflecting compact stars. In fact, Hod's approach only rules out massive scalar fields. In the present paper, for massless scalar fields outside neutral horizonless reflecting compact stars, we provide a rigorous mathematical proof on no hair theorem. We show that asymptotically flat spherically symmetric neutral horizonless reflecting compact stars cannot support exterior massless scalar field hairs.
We study an analytical solution to the Einstein's equations in 2+1-dimensions, representing the self-similar collapse of a circularly symmetric, minimally coupled, massless, scalar field. Depending on the value of certain parameters, this solution represents the formation of black holes. Since our solution is asymptotically flat, our black holes do not have the BTZ space-time as their long time limit. They represent a new family of black holes in 2+1-dimensions.
Self-similar solutions of a collapsing perfect fluid and a massless scalar field with kinematic self-similarity of the first kind in 2+1 dimensions are obtained. Their local and global properties of the solutions are studied. It is found that some of them represent gravitational collapse, in which black holes are always formed, and some may be interpreted as representing cosmological models.
We present a new hybrid Cauchy-characteristic evolution method that is particularly suited for the study of gravitational collapse in spherically-symmetric asymptotically (global) Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes. The Cauchy evolution allows us to track the scalar field through the different bounces off the AdS boundary while the characteristic method can bring us very close to the point of formation of an apparent horizon. Here, we describe all the details of the method, including the transition between the two evolution schemes and the details of the numerical implementation for the case of m…
We consider quantum backreaction of the quantized scalar field with an arbitrary mass and curvature coupling on ultraextremal horizons. The problem is distinguished in that (in contrast to non-extremal or extremal black holes) the WKB approximation remains valid near $r_{+}$ (which is the radius of the horizon) even in the massless limit. We examine the behavior of the stress-energy tensor of the quantized field near $r_{+}$ and show that quantum-corrected objects under discussion do exist. In the limit of the large mass our results agree with previous ones known in literature.
We study no-hair theorem for horizonless objects, being subject to Neumann boundary conditions. For massive scalar fields, a no hair theorem for Neumann compact stars was proved by us in a previous paper, where the nonzero scalar field mass condition is essential in the proof. In the present work, for massless scalar fields, we prove a no hair theorem, which claims that bound-state massless static scalar fields cannot exist outside asymptotically flat horizonless neutral Neumann compact stars.
We study the stability of extreme Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole under massless scalar perturbations. We show that the perturbation on the horizon of the extreme Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole experiences a power-law decay, instead of an exponential decay as observed in the nonextreme AdS black hole. On the horizon of the extreme Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole, the blow up happens at lower order derivative of the scalar field compared with that of the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole, which shows that extreme AdS black holes tend to instability in comparison to black holes in asy…
We present results from the first study of critical behavior in 3-d gravitational collapse. The source of the gravitational field is a massless scalar field. This is a well-studied case for spherically symmetric gravitational collapse, allowing us to understand the reliability and accuracy of the simulations. We study both supercritical and subcritical evolutions to see if one provides more accurate results than the other. We find that even for non-spherical initial data with 35 percent of the power in the $\ell=2$ spherical harmonic, the critical solution is the same as in spherical symmetry.
We have investigated the emerging conformal field theory behavior on the interior interface of the region near the cosmological event horizon on an example of massless Dirac fermions. Indeed, we have constructed and verified the emerging de Sitter/CFT correspondence for the near cosmological event horizon region. It is in this near horizon region where the infinitely thin shell of matter with the stiffest equation of state (Zeldovich's matter) is placed in the model for a thermodynamically stable `would be black hole' which is sometimes called a gravastar or a dark energy star. We put forward …
We investigate the structure of the gravitational field generated by a massless particle moving on the horizon of an arbitrary (stationary) black hole. This is done by employing the generalized Kerr-Schild class where we take the null generators of the horizon as the geodetic null vector-field and a scalar function which is concentrated on the horizon.
The phenomena of collapse and dispersal for a massless scalar field has drawn considerable interest in recent years, mainly from a numerical perspective. We give here a sufficient condition for the dispersal to take place for a scalar field that initially begins with a collapse. It is shown that the change of the gradient of the scalar field from a timelike to a spacelike vector must be necessarily accompanied by the dispersal of the scalar field. This result holds independently of any symmetries of the spacetime. We demonstrate the result explicitly by means of an example, which is the scalar…
We report on a numerical study of the spherically symmetric collapse of a self-gravitating massless scalar field. Earlier results of Choptuik(1992, 1994) are confirmed. The field either disperses to infinity or collapses to a black hole, depending on the strength of the initial data. For evolutions where the strength is close to but below the strength required to form a black hole, we argue that there will be a region close to the axis where the scalar curvature and field energy density can reach arbitrarily large levels, and which is visible to distant observers
We consider here the existence and structure of trapped surfaces, horizons and singularities in spherically symmetric static massless scalar field spacetimes. Earlier studies have shown that there exists no event horizon in such spacetimes if the scalar field is asymptotically flat. We extend this result here to show that this is true in general for spherically symmetric static massless scalar field spacetimes, whether the scalar field is asymptotically flat or not. Other general properties and certain important features of these models are also discussed.
In this work, the field of a gravitational shockwave generated by a massless point-like particle is calculated at the event horizon of a stationary Kerr-Newman black hole. Using the geometric framework of generalized Kerr-Schild deformations in combination with the spin-coefficient formalism of Newman and Penrose, it is shown that the field equations of the theory, at the event horizon of the black hole, can be reduced to a single linear ordinary differential equation for the so-called profile function of the geometry. This differential relation is solved exactly. Based on the results obtained…
Several classes of conformally-flat and spherically symmetric exact solutions to the Einstein field equations coupled with either a massless scalar field or a radiation fluid are given, and their main properties are studied. It is found that some represent the formation of black holes due to the gravitational collapse of the matter fields. When the spacetimes have continuous self-similarity (CSS), the masses of black holes take a scaling form $M_{BH} \propto (P - P^{*})^γ$, where $γ= 0.5$ for massless scalar field and $γ= 1$ for radiation fluid. The reasons for the difference between the value…
The stability of the cosmological event horizons (CEHs) of a class of non-static global cosmic strings is studied against perturbations of gravitational waves and massless scalar field. It is found that the perturbations of gravitational waves always turn the CEHs into non-scalar weak spacetime curvature singularities, while the ones of massless scalar field turn the CEHs either into non-scalar weak singularities or into scalar ones depending on the particular cases considered. The perturbations of test massless scalar field is also studied, and it is found that they do not always give the cor…
We present results from a numerical study of critical gravitational collapse of axisymmetric distributions of massless scalar field energy. We find threshold behavior that can be described by the spherically symmetric critical solution with axisymmetric perturbations. However, we see indications of a growing, non-spherical mode about the spherically symmetric critical solution. The effect of this instability is that the small asymmetry present in what would otherwise be a spherically symmetric self-similar solution grows. This growth continues until a bifurcation occurs and two distinct region…
In this article we investigate the Hawking radiation of vector particles from the apparent horizon of a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe in the framework of quantum tunneling method. Furthermore we use Proca equation, a relativistic wave equation for a massive/massless spin-1 particle (massless $γ$ photons, weak massive $W^{\pm}$ and $Z^{0}$ bosons, strong massless gluons and $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons) together with a Painlevé spacetime metric for the FRW universe. We solve the Proca equation via Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) equation and the WKB approximation method. We recover the same result for t…
Gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field with the periodic boundary condition in a cubic box is reported. This system can be regarded as a lattice universe model. We construct the initial data for a Gaussian like profile of the scalar field taking the integrability condition associated with the periodic boundary condition into account. For a large initial amplitude, a black hole is formed after a certain period of time. While the scalar field spreads out in the whole region for a small initial amplitude. It is shown that the expansion law in a late time approaches to that of the radia…
Aretakis has proved that a massless scalar field has an instability at the horizon of an extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole. We show that a similar instability occurs also for a massive scalar field and for coupled linearized gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations. We present numerical results for the late time behaviour of massless and massive scalar fields in the extreme RN background and show that instabilities are present for initial perturbations supported outside the horizon, e.g.\ an ingoing wavepacket. For a massless scalar we show that the numerical results for the late ti…
We perform numerical simulations of the gravitational collapse of a k-essence scalar field. When the field is sufficiently strongly gravitating, a black hole forms. However, the black hole has two horizons: a light horizon (the ordinary black hole horizon) and a sound horizon that traps k-essence. In certain cases the k-essence signals can travel faster than light and the sound horizon is inside the light horizon. Under those circumstances, k-essence signals can escape from the black hole. Eventually, the two horizons merge and the k-essence signals can no longer escape.
We investigate the power-law tails in the evolution of a charged massless scalar field around a fixed background of a dilaton black hole. Using both analytical and numerical methods we find the inverse power-law relaxation of charged fields at future timelike infinity, future null infinity, and along the outer horizon of the considered black hole. We invisage that a charged hair decays slower than neutral ones. The oscillatory inverse power law along the outer horizon of the dilaton black hole is of a great importance for a mass inflation scenario along the Cauchy horizon of a dynamically form…
In a recent paper we showed that the collapse to a black hole in one-parameter families of initial data for massless, minimally coupled scalar fields in spherically symmetric semi-classical loop quantum gravity exhibited a universal mass scaling similar to the one in classical general relativity. In particular, no evidence of a mass gap appeared as had been suggested by previous studies. The lack of a mass gap indicated the possible existence of a self-similar critical solution as in general relativity. Here we provide further evidence for its existence. Using an adaptive mesh refinement code,…
We describe a formalism for studying spherically symmetric collapse of the massless scalar field in any spacetime dimension, and for any value of the cosmological constant $Λ$. The formalism is used for numerical simulations of gravitational collapse in four spacetime dimensions with negative $Λ$. We observe critical behaviour at the onset of black hole formation, and find that the critical exponent is independent of $Λ$.
In the context of gravitational collapse and black hole formation, we reconsider the problem to describe analytically the critical collapse of a massless and minimally coupled scalar field in $2+1$ gravity.
Several anomalies of black hole thermodynamics are resolved if one accepts hints from semi classical theory that in regions of strong gravity the energy density of the vacuum can become substantially negative. This leads to a picture of the horizon as a hot massless shell. As viewed in the local (Boulware) ground state, the apparent horizon is the repository of a large store of energy, and this energy is thermal. But, as a source of gravity, its mass is near zero. A simple (1+1)-dimensional model provides a concrete realization of this picture.
The stability of the Cauchy horizon in spherically symmetric self-similar collapse is studied by determining the flux of scalar radiation impinging on the horizon. This flux is found to be finite.
In this paper, we first generalize the definition of stationary universal horizons to dynamical ones, and then show that (dynamical) universal horizons can be formed from realistic gravitational collapse. This is done by constructing analytical models of a collapsing spherically symmetric star with finite thickness in Einstein-aether theory.
In this paper we study thermalization in a strongly coupled system via AdS/CFT. Initially, the energy is injected into the system by turning on a spatially homogenous scalar source coupled to a marginal composite operator. The thermalization process is studied by numerically solving Einstein's equations coupled to a massless scalar field in the Poincare patch of AdS_5. We define a thermalization time t_T on the AdS side, which has an interpretation in terms of a spacelike Wilson loop <W(l =1/T)> in CFT. Here T is the thermal equilibrium temperature. We study both cases with the source turned o…
We study collapse of evaporating spherically-symmetric thin dust shells and dust balls assuming that quantum effects are encapsulated in a spherically-symmetric metric that satisfied mild regularity conditions. The evaporation may accelerate collapse, but for a generic metric the Schwarzschild radius is not crossed. Instead the shell (or the layer in the ball of dust) is always at a certain sub-Planckian distance from it.
Since horizon formation in global anti-de Sitter spacetime is dual to thermalization of a conformal field theory on a compact space, whether generic initial data is stable or unstable against gravitational collapse is of great interest. We argue that all the known stable initial data for massless scalars are dominated by single scalar eigenmodes, specifically providing strong numerical evidence consistent with the interpretation that initial data with equal energies in two modes collapse on time scales of order the inverse square of the amplitude. We further scan the parameter space for massiv…
We show that the behaviour of outgoing radial null geodesic congruence on the apparent horizon is related to the property of nakedness in spherical dust collapse justifying the difference between the Penrose diagrams in the naked and covered dust collapse scenarios. We provide arguments suggesting that the relationship could be generally valid.
We present a class of solutions for a heat conducting fluid sphere, which radiates energy during collapse without the appearance of horizon at the boundary at any stage of the collapse. A simple model shows that there is no accumulation of energy due to collapse since it radiates out at the same rate as it is being generated.

In the gravitational collapse of matter beyond spherical symmetry, gravitational waves are necessarily present. On the other hand, gravitational waves can collapse to a black hole even without matter. One might therefore wonder whether the interaction and competition between the matter fields and gravitational waves affects critical phenomena at the threshold of black hole formation. As a toy model for this, we study type II critical collapse with two matter fields in spherical symmetry, namely a scalar field and a Yang-Mills field. On their own, both display discrete self-similarity (DSS) in …
We investigate the causal temperature profiles in a recent model of a radiating star undergoing dissipative gravitational collapse without the formation of an horizon. It is shown that this simple exact model provides a physically reasonable behaviour for the temperature profile within the framework of extended irreversible thermodynamics.
We prove that the quantum stress tensor for a massless scalar field in two dimensional non-selfsimilar Tolman Bondi dust collapse and Vaidya radiation collapse models diverges on the Cauchy horizon, if the latter exists. The two dimensional model is obtained by suppressing angular co-ordinates in the corresponding four dimensional spherical model.
I explain, in non-technical terms, the basic ideas of Holographic Space-time (HST) models of quantum gravity (QG). The key feature is that the degrees of freedom (DOF) of QG, localized in a finite causal diamond are restrictions of an algebra of asymptotic currents, describing flows of quantum numbers out to null infinity in Minkowski space, with zero energy density on the sphere at infinity. Finite energy density states are constrained states of these DOF and the resulting relation between asymptotic energy and the number of constraints, explains the relation between black hole entropy and en…
We study the gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field within the effective scenario of loop quantum gravity. Classical singularity is avoided and replaced by a quantum bounce in this model. It is shown that, quantum gravity effects predict a threshold scale below which no horizon can form as the collapse evolves towards the bounce.
The hidden Kerr/CFT proposal implies that the massless scalar wave equation in the near-region and low-frequency limit respects a hidden SL(2,R)$\times$SL(2,R) invariance in the Kerr black hole spacetime. We may use this symmetry to determine quasinormal frequencies (QNFs) of the massless scalar wave propagating around the Kerr black hole algebraically. It is shown that QNFs obtained using the hidden conformal symmetry near the horizon correspond approximately to not only those of scalar perturbation around the near-horizon region of a nearly extremal Kerr (NEK) black hole, but also those of n…
We study the time evolution of the Misner-Sharp mass and the apparent horizon for gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field in the $AdS_{5}$ space-time for both cases of narrow and broad waves by numerically solving the Einstein's equations coupled to a massless scalar field. This is done by relying on the full dynamics of the collapse including the concept of the dynamical horizon. It turns out that the Misner-Sharp mass is everywhere constant except for a rapid change across a thin shell defined by the density profile of the collapsing wave. By studying the evolution of the apparent …
Based on a previously found general class of quantum improved exact solutions composed of non-interacting (dust) particles, we model the gravitational collapse of stars. As the modeled star collapses a closed apparent 3-horizon is generated due to the consideration of quantum effects. The effect of the subsequent emission of Hawking radiation related to this horizon is taken into consideration. Our computations lead us to argue that a total evaporation could be reached. The inferred global picture of the spacetime corresponding to gravitational collapse is devoid of both event horizons and she…
Penrose's singularity theorem implies that if a trapped region forms in a gravitational collapse, then a singularity must form as well within such region. However, it is widely expected that singularities should be generically avoided by quantum gravitational effects. Here we shall explore both the minimum requirements to avoid singularities in a gravitational collapse as well as discuss, without relying on a specific quantum gravity model, the possible regular spacetimes associated to such regularization of the spacetime fabric. In particular, we shall expose the intimate and quite subtle rel…
We study the geodesic motion of massless particles in singly rotating black ring spacetimes. We find stable stationary orbits of massless particles in toroidal spiral shape in the case that the thickness parameter of a black ring is less than a critical value. Furthermore, there exist nonstationary massless particles bounded in a finite region outside the horizon. This is the first example of stable bound orbits of massless particles around a black object.
We examine the wave-functionals describing the collapse of a self-gravitating dust ball in an exact quantization of the gravity-dust system. We show that ingoing (collapsing) dust shell modes outside the apparent horizon must necessarily be accompanied by outgoing modes inside the apparent horizon, whose amplitude is suppressed by the square root of the Boltzmann factor at the Hawking temperature. Likewise, ingoing modes in the interior must be accompanied by outgoing modes in the exterior, again with an amplitude suppressed by the same factor. A suitable superposition of the two solutions is …
We employ quantum kinetic theory to investigate local quantum physics in the background of spherically symmetric and neutral black holes formed through the gravitational collapse. For this purpose in mind, we derive and study the covariant Wigner distribution function $\mathcal{W}(x,p)$ near to and far away from the black-hole horizon. We find that the local density of the particle number is negative in the near-horizon region, while the entropy density is imaginary. These pose a question whether kinetic theory is applicable in the near-horizon region. We elaborate on that and propose a possib…
An exact expression for the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations on a massless topological black hole in four and higher dimensions is presented. The massive scalar field is nonminimally coupled to the curvature, and the horizon geometry is assumed to have a negative constant curvature.
