The supercritical composition of a plasma model with cold positive ions in the presence of a two-temperature electron population is investigated, initially by a reductive perturbation approach, under the combined requirements that there be neither quadratic nor cubic nonlinearities in the evolution equation. This leads to a unique choice for the set of compositional parameters and a modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (mKdV) with a quartic nonlinear term. The conclusions about its one-soliton solution and integrability will also be valid for more complicated plasma compositions. Only three polynomial conservation laws can be obtained. The mKdV equation with quartic nonlinearity is not completely integrable, thus precluding the existence of multi-soliton solutions. Next, the full Sagdeev pseudopotential method has been applied and this allows for a detailed comparison with the reductive perturbation results. This comparison shows that the mKdV solitons have slightly larger amplitudes and widths than those obtained from the more complete Sagdeev solution and that only slightly superacoustic mKdV solitons have acceptable amplitudes and widths, in the light of the full solutions.
We consider approximate, exact, and numerical solutions to the cylindrical Korteweg-de Vries equation. We show that there are different types of solitary waves and obtain the dependence of their parameters on distance. Then, we study the interaction of solitary waves of different types.
The perturbed Korteweg--de Vries equation is considered. This equation is used for the description of one--dimensional viscous gas dynamics, nonlinear waves in a liquid with gas bubbles and nonlinear acoustic waves. The integrability of this equation is investigated using the Painlevé approach. The condition for parameters for the integrability of the perturbed Korteweg--de Vries equation equation is established. New classical and nonclassical symmetries admitted by this equation are found. All corresponding symmetry reductions are obtained. New exact solutions of these reductions are construc…
We obtain an exact solution for the breather lattice solution of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (MKdV) equation. Numerical simulation of the breather lattice demonstrates its instability due to the breather-breather interaction. However, such multi-breather structures can be stabilized through the concurrent application of ac driving and viscous damping terms.
We study the perturbed Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries equation. This equation can be used for the description of nonlinear waves in a liquid with gas bubbles and for the description of nonlinear waves on a fluid layer flowing down an inclined plane. We investigate the integrability of this equation using the Painlevé approach. We show that the perturbed Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries equation does not belong to the class of integrable equations. Classical and nonclassical symmetries admitted by this equation and corresponding symmetry reductions are constructed. New types of periodic analytical structur…
We consider an extended Korteweg-de Vries (eKdV) equation, the usual Korteweg-de Vries equation with inclusion of an additional cubic nonlinearity. We investigate the statistical behaviour of flat-top solitary waves described by an eKdV equation in the presence of weak dissipative disorder in the linear growth/damping term. With the weak disorder in the system, the amplitude of solitary wave randomly fluctuates during evolution. We demonstrate numerically that the probability density function of a solitary wave parameter $κ$ which characterizes the soliton amplitude exhibits loglognormal diver…
Original Whitham's method of derivation of modulation equations is applied to systems whose dynamics is described by a perturbed Korteweg-de Vries equation. Two situations are distinguished: (i) the perturbation leads to appearance of right-hand sides in the modulation equations so that they become non-uniform; (ii) the perturbation leads to modification of the matrix of Whitham velocities. General form of Whitham modulation equations is obtained for each case. The essential difference between them is illustrated by an example of so-called `generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation'. Method of fi…
We study the Boussinesq equation from the point of view of a multiple-time reductive perturbation method. As a consequence of the elimination of the secular producing terms through the use of the Korteweg--de Vries hierarchy, we show that the solitary--wave of the Boussinesq equation is a solitary--wave satisfying simultaneously all equations of the Korteweg--de Vries hierarchy, each one in an appropriate slow time variable.
Stationary wave solutions of the perturbed Korteweg-de Vries equation are considered in the presence of external hamiltonian perturbations. Conditions of their chaotic behaviour are studied with the help of Melnikov theory. For the homoclinic chaos Poincaré sections are constructed to demonstrate the complicated behaviour, and Lyapunov exponents are also numerically calculated.
We consider the long-time evolution of pulses in the Korteweg-de Vries equation theory for initial distributions which produce no soliton, but instead lead to the formation of a dispersive shock wave and of a rarefaction wave. An approach based on Whitham modulation theory makes it possible to obtain an analytic description of the structure and to describe its self-similar behavior near the soliton edge of the shock. The results are compared with numerical simulations.
A broad set of sufficient conditions consisting of systems of linear partial differential equations is presented which guarantees that the Wronskian determinant solves the Korteweg-de Vries equation in the bilinear form. A systematical analysis is made for solving the resultant linear systems of second-order and third-order partial differential equations, along with solution formulas for their representative systems. The key technique is to apply variation of parameters in solving the involved non-homogeneous partial differential equations. The obtained solution formulas provide us with a comp…
The Korteweg-de Vries and Benjamin-Ono nonlinear wave equations can describe solitary waves, all of which propagate in the same direction and which emerge from collisions with their shapes unchanged. There are technical challenges to giving a description of the thermal equilibrium of a dilute gas of such solitons. These challenges can be overcome by considering a stochastic source of new solitons located at $x=0$. The total intensity and the momentum distributions of the solitons emitted by such sources determine the equilibrium distribution of soliton momenta for $x>0$.
A new integrable sixth-order nonlinear wave equation is discovered by means of the Painleve analysis, which is equivalent to the Korteweg - de Vries equation with a source. A Lax representation and a Backlund self-transformation are found of the new equation, and its travelling wave solutions and generalized symmetries are studied.
The addition of higher order asymptotic corrections to the Korteweg-de Vries equation results in the extended Korteweg-de Vries equation. These higher order terms destabilise the dispersive shock wave solution, also termed an undular bore in fluid dynamics, and result in the emission of resonant radiation. In broad terms, there are three possible dispersive shock wave regimes: radiating dispersive shock wave (RDSW), cross-over dispersive shock wave (CDSW) and travelling dispersive shock wave (TDSW). While there are existing solutions for the RDSW and TDSW regimes obtained using modulation theo…
Under certain mode-matching conditions, small-amplitude waves can be trapped by coupling to solitons of nonlinear fields. We present a model for this phenomenon, consisting of a linear equation coupled to the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The model has one parameter, a coupling constant. For one value of the coupling constant the model becomes the linearized KdV equation. We solve the problem exactly for a different value of the coupling parameter, for which the solutions behave differently. We describe an application of our results to the dynamics of molecules.
Solitary waves propagation of baryonic density perturbations, ruled by the Korteweg--de Vries equation in a mean-field quark-gluon plasma model, are investigated from the point of view of the theory of information. A recently proposed continuous logarithmic measure of information, called configurational entropy, is used to derive the soliton width, defining the pulse, for which the informational content of the soliton spatial profile is more compressed, in the Shannon's sense.
We apply a multiple-time version of the reductive perturbation method to study long waves as governed by the shallow water wave model equation. As a consequence of the requirement of a secularity-free perturbation theory, we show that the well known N-soliton dynamics of the shallow water wave equation, in the particular case of $α=2 β$, can be reduced to the N-soliton solution that satisfies simultaneously all equations of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy.
This paper considers properties of nonlinear waves and solitons of Korteweg-de Vries equation in the presence of external perturbation. For time-periodic hamiltonian perturbation the width of the stochastic layer is calculated. The conclusions about chaotic behaviour in long-period waves and solitons are inferred. Obtained theoretical results find experimental confirmation in experiments with the propagation of ion-acoustic waves in plasma.
By using the multiple scale method with the simultaneous introduction of multiple times, we study the propagation of long surface-waves in a shallow inviscid fluid. As a consequence of the requirements of scale invariance and absence of secular terms in each order of the perturbative expansion, we show that the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy equations do appear in the description of such waves. Finally, we show that this procedure of eliminating secularities is closely related to the renormalization technique introduced by Kodama and Taniuti.
We propose and demonstrate, with the one-dimensional Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers model, the scenarios of transfer loop and \textit{all-scale} statistical equilibrium, the former being associated to shock formation and the latter to Gaussian distributions as in a canonical ensemble, but with wavelength-dependent temperatures. The discussions emphasize, among the multi-disciplinary relevance, the classical nonlinear acoustics and quantum shock waves, for the possibility of more favorable experimental tests.
