We develop the complete theory for non-Abelian braiding of Majorana Kramers' pairs (MKPs) in time-reversal (TR) invariant topological superconductors. By introducing an effective Hamiltonian approach to describe the braiding of MKPs, we show that the non-Abelian braiding is protected when the effective Hamiltonian exhibits a new TR like anti-unitary symmetry, which is satisfied if the system is free of dynamical noise. Importantly, even the dynamical noise may not cause error in braiding, unless the noise correlation function breaks a dynamical TR symmetry, which generalizes the TR symmetry protection of MKPs to dynamical regime. Moreover, the resulted error by noise is shown to be a higher order effect, compared with the decoherence of Majorana qubits without TR symmetry protection. These results show that the non-Abelian braiding of MKPs is observable and may have versatile applications to future quantum computation technologies.
We consider the braiding of Kramers pairs of Majorana bound states. We derive the most general transformation on the many-body ground state that is applied as the result of such a braiding process. The result is derived in the context of a simple toy model, but we will show that it has the most general form that is compatible with local and global conservation of electron parity. In accordance with earlier work the resulting transformation turns out to be path dependent, which shows that Kramers pairs of Majorana bound states cannot be used for topological quantum computation. We also discuss …
We investigate non-Abelian statistics of Majorana Kramers pairs (MKPs) in a network system of one-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological superconductors by using numerical simulations of braiding dynamics, and examine the tolerance against various perturbations which may cause decoherence of MKPs. We, first, consider effects of a magnetic field which breaks time-reversal symmetry. In contrast to a naive expectation, the non-Abelian braiding of MKPs is robust against applied magnetic fields provided that the initial and final states of a braiding process are invariant under the combina…
On the surface of time-reversal-invariant topological superconductors, Kramers pairs of Majorana fermions with chiral and crystalline symmetries exhibit completely uniaxial or octupole anisotropic magnetic response. This paper reports possible types of magnetic responses of Majorana Kramers pairs with one-dimensional Z2 invariants defined by crystalline symmetry. In particular, the general theory predicts a new type of magnetic response where two Majorana Kramers pairs associated with the Z2 invariant show biaxially (quadrupolar) anisotropic magnetic response, which is a novel type of response…
We study braiding statistics between quasiparticles and vortices in two-dimensional charge-$2m$ (in units of $e$) superconductors that are coupled to a $\mathbb Z_{2m}$ dynamical gauge field, where $m$ is any positive integer. We show that there exist $16m$ types of braiding statistics when $m$ is odd, but only $4m$ types when $m$ is even. Based on the braiding statistics, we obtain a classification of topological phases of charge-$2m$ superconductors---or formally speaking, a classification of symmetry-protected topological phases, as well as invertible topological phases, of two-dimensional …
It has been widely believed that half quantum vortices are indispensable to realize topological stable Majorana zero modes and non-Abelian anyons in spinful superconductors/superfluids. Contrary to this wisdom, we here demonstrate that integer quantum vortices in spinful superconductors can host topologically stable Majorana zero modes because of the mirror symmetry. The symmetry protected Majorana fermions may exhibit non-Abelian anyon braiding.
Abrikosov vortices in Fe-based superconductors are a promising platform for hosting Majorana zero modes. Their adiabatic exchange is a key ingredient for Majorana-based quantum computing. However, the adiabatic braiding process can not be realized in state-of-the-art experiments. We propose to replace the infinitely slow, long-path braiding by only slightly moving vortices in a special geometry without actually physically exchanging the Majoranas, like a Majorana carousel. Although the resulting finite-time gate is not topologically protected, it is robust against variations in material specif…
Symmetry-protected topological superconductors (TSCs) can host multiple Majorana zero modes (MZMs) at their edges or vortex cores, while whether the Majorana braiding in such systems is non-Abelian in general remains an open question. Here we uncover in theory the unitary symmetry-protected non-Abelian statisitcs of MZMs and propose the experimental realization. We show that braiding two vortices with each hosting $N$ unitary symmetry-protected MZMs generically reduces to $N$ independent sectors, with each sector braiding two different Majorana modes. This renders the unitary symmetry-protecte…
We study an intrinsic relation between the topology of bulk electronic states and magnetic responses of Majorana Kramers pairs, Kramers pairs of Majorana fermions, on a surface of time-reversal-invariant topological superconductors. Majorana Kramers pairs respond to an applied magnetic field anisotropically due to the interplay between time-reversal and crystal symmetries. In this paper, we propose a systematic procedure to determine such surface magnetic responses in systems with an order-two symmetry. From the analysis of topological invariants associated with an order-two symmetry, it is fo…
We propose a feasible route to engineer one and two dimensional time reversal invariant (TRI) topological superconductors (SC) via proximity effects between nodeless extended s wave iron-based SC and semiconductors with large Rashba spin-orbit interactions. At the boundary of a TRI topological SC, there emerges a Kramers pair of Majorana edge (bound) states. For a Josephson pi-junction we predict a Majorana quartet that is protected by mirror symmetry and leads to a mirror fractional Josephson effect. We analyze the evolution of Majorana pair in Zeeman fields, as the SC undergoes a symmetry cl…
Braiding of Majorana zero modes provides a promising platform for quantum information processing, which is topologically protected against errors. Strictly speaking, however, the scheme relies on infinite braiding times as it utilizes the adiabatic limit. Here we show how to minimize nonadiabatic errors for finite braiding times by finding an optimal protocol for the Majorana movement. Interestingly, these protocols are characterized by sharp transitions between Majorana motion at maximal and minimal velocities. We find that these so-called bang-bang protocols can minimize the nonadiabatic tra…
We numerically investigate non-Abelian braiding dynamics of vortices in two-dimensional topological superconductors, such as $s$-wave superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Majorana zero modes (MZMs) hosted by the vortices constitute a topological qubit, which offers a fundamental building block of topological quantum computation. As the MZMs are protected by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ invariant, however, the Majorana qubit and quantum gate operations may be sensitive to intrinsic decoherence caused by quasiparticle interference. Numerically simulating the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equ…
Qubits in topological quantum computation are built from non-Abelian anyons. Adiabatic braiding of anyons is exploited as topologically protected logical gate operations. Thus, the adiabaticity upon which the notion of quantum statistics is defined, plays a fundamental role in defining the non-Abelian anyons. We study the non-adiabatic effects in braidings of Ising-type anyons, namely Majorana fermions in topological superconductors, using the formalism of time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Using this formalism, we consider non-adiabatic corrections to non-Abelian statistics from: …
Time-reversal-invariant topological superconductor (TRITOPS) wires host Majorana Kramers pairs that have been predicted to mediate a fractional Josephson effect with $4π$ periodicity in the superconducting phase difference. We explore the TRITOPS fractional Josephson effect in the presence of time-dependent `local mixing' perturbations that instantaneously preserve time-reversal symmetry. Specifically, we show that just as such couplings render braiding of Majorana Kramers pairs non-universal, the Josephson current becomes either aperiodic or $2π$-periodic (depending on conditions that we quan…
Majorana mode based topological qubits are potentially subject to diabatic errors that in principle can limit the utility of topological quantum computation. Using a combination of analytical and numerical methods we study the diabatic errors in Majorana-based topological Y-junction that are coupled to a Bosonic bath in the Markovian approximation. From the study we find analytically that in the absence of a bath, the error rate can be made exponentially small in the braiding time only for completely smooth pulse shapes. Thus, pristine topological systems can reach exponentially small errors e…
In this work, we show that a quasi-one-dimensional $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is a DIII class, time-reversal invariant, topological superconductor (TS) which supports a Majorana Kramers Doublet (MKD) at each end of the TS. A MKD is a pair of Majorana end states (MESs) protected by time-reversal symmetry (TRS). An external magnetic field breaks TRS and drives the system from DIII to D class in which case a single MES appears at each end of the TS. We show that a MKD induces resonant Andreev reflection with zero bias conductance peak of $4e^2/h$. Experiment…
The search for topological superconductors and non-Abelian Majorana modes ranks among the most fascinating topics in condensed matter physics. There now exist several fundamental superconducting phases which host symmetry protected or chiral Majorana modes. The latter, namely the chiral Majorana modes are protected by Chern numbers in even dimensions. Here we propose to observe novel chiral Majorana modes by realizing Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state, i.e. the pairing density wave (PDW) phase in a Weyl semimetal which breaks time-reversal symmetry. Without symmetry protection, the 3D gap…
Higher-order topological insulators have a modified bulk-boundary correspondence compared to other topological phases: instead of gapless edge or surface states, they have gapped edges and surfaces, but protected modes at corners or hinges. Here, we explore symmetry protected topological phases in strongly interacting many-body systems with this generalized bulk-boundary correspondence. We introduce several exactly solvable bosonic lattice models as candidates for interacting higher order symmetry protected topological (HOSPT) phases protected by spatial symmetries, and develop a topological f…
The interplay between bulk spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron interactions produces umklapp scattering in the helical edge states of a two-dimensional topological insulator. If the chemical potential is at the Dirac point, umklapp scattering can open a gap in the edge state spectrum even if the system is time-reversal invariant. We determine the zero-energy bound states at the interfaces between a section of a helical liquid which is gapped out by the superconducting proximity effect and a section gapped out by umklapp scattering. We show that these interfaces pin charges which are mult…
Majorana Kramers pairs emerged on surfaces of time-reversal-invariant topological crystalline superconductors show the Ising anisotropy to an applied magnetic field. We clarify that crystalline symmetry uniquely determines the direction of the Majorana Ising spin for given irreducible representations of pair potential, deriving constraints to topological invariants. Besides, necessary conditions for nontrivial topological invariants protected by the n-fold rotational symmetry are shown.
A topological superconductor is characterized by having a pairing gap in the bulk and gapless self-hermitian Majorana modes at its boundary. In one dimension, these are zero-energy modes bound to the ends, while in two dimensions these are chiral gapless modes traveling along the edge. Majorana modes have attracted a lot of interest due to their exotic properties, which include non-abelian exchange statistics. Progress in realizing topological superconductivity has been made by combining spin-orbit coupling, conventional superconductivity, and magnetism. The existence of protected Majorana mod…
Topological quantum computation provides an elegant way around decoherence, as one encodes quantum information in a non-local fashion that the environment finds difficult to corrupt. Here we establish that one of the key operations---braiding of non-Abelian anyons---can be implemented in one-dimensional semiconductor wire networks. Previous work [Lutchyn et al., arXiv:1002.4033 and Oreg et al., arXiv:1003.1145] provided a recipe for driving semiconducting wires into a topological phase supporting long-sought particles known as Majorana fermions that can store topologically protected quantum in…
The study of non-Abelian Majorana zero modes advances our understanding of the fundamental physics in quantum matter, and pushes the potential applications of such exotic states to topological quantum computation. It has been shown that in two-dimensional (2D) and 1D chiral superconductors, the isolated Majorana fermions obey non-Abelian statistics. However, Majorana modes in a $Z_2$ time-reversal invariant (TRI) topological superconductor come in pairs due to Kramers' theorem. Therefore, braiding operations in TRI superconductors always exchange two pairs of Majoranas. In this work, we show i…
Non-Abelian quasiparticles have been predicted to exist in a variety of condensed matter systems. Their defining property is that an adiabatic braid between two of them results in a nontrivial change of the quantum state of the system. To date, no experimental platform has reached the desired control over non-Abelian quasiparticles to demonstrate this remarkable property. The simplest non-Abelian quasiparticles -- the Majorana bound states (MBS) -- can occur in one-dimensional (1D) electronic nano-structures proximity-coupled to a bulk superconductor -- a platform that is being currently explo…
Topological superfluids protected by mirror and time-reversal symmetries are exotic states of matter possessing Majorana Kramers pairs (MKPs), yet their realizations have long been hindered by the requirement of unconventional pairing. We propose to realize such a topological superfluid by utilizing $s$-wave pairing and emergent mirror and time-reversal symmetries in two coupled 1D ultracold atomic Fermi gases with spin-orbit coupling. By stacking such systems into 2D, we discover topological and Dirac-nodal superfluids hosting distinct MKP flat bands. We show that the emergent symmetries make…
