Coreference resolution is one of the first stages in deep language understanding and its importance has been well recognized in the natural language processing community. In this paper, we propose a generative, unsupervised ranking model for entity coreference resolution by introducing resolution mode variables. Our unsupervised system achieves 58.44% F1 score of the CoNLL metric on the English data from the CoNLL-2012 shared task (Pradhan et al., 2012), outperforming the Stanford deterministic system (Lee et al., 2013) by 3.01%.

Recent work on entity coreference resolution (CR) follows current trends in Deep Learning applied to embeddings and relatively simple task-related features. SOTA models do not make use of hierarchical representations of discourse structure. In this work, we leverage automatically constructed discourse parse trees within a neural approach and demonstrate a significant improvement on two benchmark entity coreference-resolution datasets. We explore how the impact varies depending upon the type of mention.

Coreference Resolution is an important NLP task and most state-of-the-art methods rely on word embeddings for word representation. However, one issue that has been largely overlooked in literature is that of comparing the performance of different embeddings across and within families in this task. Therefore, we frame our study in the context of Event and Entity Coreference Resolution (EvCR & EnCR), and address two questions : 1) Is there a trade-off between performance (predictive & run-time) and embedding size? 2) How do the embeddings' performance compare within and across families? Our expe…

Coreference resolution (CR) is an essential part of discourse analysis. Most recently, neural approaches have been proposed to improve over SOTA models from earlier paradigms. So far none of the published neural models leverage external semantic knowledge such as type information. This paper offers the first such model and evaluation, demonstrating modest gains in accuracy by introducing either gold standard or predicted types. In the proposed approach, type information serves both to (1) improve mention representation and (2) create a soft type consistency check between coreference candidate …

Entity Coreference Resolution is the task of resolving all mentions in a document that refer to the same real world entity and is considered as one of the most difficult tasks in natural language understanding. It is of great importance for downstream natural language processing tasks such as entity linking, machine translation, summarization, chatbots, etc. This work aims to give a detailed review of current progress on solving Coreference Resolution using neural-based approaches. It also provides a detailed appraisal of the datasets and evaluation metrics in the field, as well as the subtask…

This paper analyzes the impact of higher-order inference (HOI) on the task of coreference resolution. HOI has been adapted by almost all recent coreference resolution models without taking much investigation on its true effectiveness over representation learning. To make a comprehensive analysis, we implement an end-to-end coreference system as well as four HOI approaches, attended antecedent, entity equalization, span clustering, and cluster merging, where the latter two are our original methods. We find that given a high-performing encoder such as SpanBERT, the impact of HOI is negative to m…

We investigate modeling coreference resolution under a fixed memory constraint by extending an incremental clustering algorithm to utilize contextualized encoders and neural components. Given a new sentence, our end-to-end algorithm proposes and scores each mention span against explicit entity representations created from the earlier document context (if any). These spans are then used to update the entity's representations before being forgotten; we only retain a fixed set of salient entities throughout the document. In this work, we successfully convert a high-performing model (Joshi et al.,…

Pronoun resolution is a challenging subset of an essential field in natural language processing called coreference resolution. Coreference resolution is about finding all entities in the text that refers to the same real-world entity. This paper presents a hybrid model combining multiple rulebased sieves with a machine-learning sieve for pronouns. For this purpose, seven high-precision rule-based sieves are designed for the Persian language. Then, a random forest classifier links pronouns to the previous partial clusters. The presented method demonstrates exemplary performance using pipeline d…

Coreference resolution has been mostly investigated within a single document scope, showing impressive progress in recent years based on end-to-end models. However, the more challenging task of cross-document (CD) coreference resolution remained relatively under-explored, with the few recent models applied only to gold mentions. Here, we introduce the first end-to-end model for CD coreference resolution from raw text, which extends the prominent model for within-document coreference to the CD setting. Our model achieves competitive results for event and entity coreference resolution on gold me…
Relating entities and events in text is a key component of natural language understanding. Cross-document coreference resolution, in particular, is important for the growing interest in multi-document analysis tasks. In this work we propose a new model that extends the efficient sequential prediction paradigm for coreference resolution to cross-document settings and achieves competitive results for both entity and event coreference while provides strong evidence of the efficacy of both sequential models and higher-order inference in cross-document settings. Our model incrementally composes men…
We present the first large scale corpus for entity resolution in email conversations (CEREC). The corpus consists of 6001 email threads from the Enron Email Corpus containing 36,448 email messages and 60,383 entity coreference chains. The annotation is carried out as a two-step process with minimal manual effort. Experiments are carried out for evaluating different features and performance of four baselines on the created corpus. For the task of mention identification and coreference resolution, a best performance of 59.2 F1 is reported, highlighting the room for improvement. An in-depth quali…
The target of a coreference resolution system is to cluster all mentions that refer to the same entity in a given context. All coreference resolution systems need to solve two subtasks; one task is to detect all of the potential mentions, and the other is to learn the linking of an antecedent for each possible mention. In this paper, we propose a reinforcement learning actor-critic-based neural coreference resolution system, which can achieve both mention detection and mention clustering by leveraging an actor-critic deep reinforcement learning technique and a joint training algorithm. We expe…

Coreference resolution aims to identify words and phrases which refer to same entity in a text, a core task in natural language processing. In this paper, we extend this task to resolving coreferences in long-form narrations of visual scenes. First we introduce a new dataset with annotated coreference chains and their bounding boxes, as most existing image-text datasets only contain short sentences without coreferring expressions or labeled chains. We propose a new technique that learns to identify coreference chains using weak supervision, only from image-text pairs and a regularization using…
A coreference resolution system is to cluster all mentions that refer to the same entity in a given context. All coreference resolution systems need to tackle two main tasks: one task is to detect all of the potential mentions, and the other is to learn the linking of an antecedent for each possible mention. In this paper, we propose a hybrid rule-neural coreference resolution system based on actor-critic learning, such that it can achieve better coreference performance by leveraging the advantages from both the heuristic rules and a neural conference model. This end-to-end system can also per…

We study the potential synergy between two different NLP tasks, both confronting predicate lexical variability: identifying predicate paraphrases, and event coreference resolution. First, we used annotations from an event coreference dataset as distant supervision to re-score heuristically-extracted predicate paraphrases. The new scoring gained more than 18 points in average precision upon their ranking by the original scoring method. Then, we used the same re-ranking features as additional inputs to a state-of-the-art event coreference resolution model, which yielded modest but consistent imp…
Identifying related entities and events within and across documents is fundamental to natural language understanding. We present an approach to entity and event coreference resolution utilizing contrastive representation learning. Earlier state-of-the-art methods have formulated this problem as a binary classification problem and leveraged large transformers in a cross-encoder architecture to achieve their results. For large collections of documents and corresponding set of $n$ mentions, the necessity of performing $n^{2}$ transformer computations in these earlier approaches can be computation…
Various neural-based methods have been proposed so far for joint mention detection and coreference resolution. However, existing works on coreference resolution are mainly dependent on filtered mention representation, while other spans are largely neglected. In this paper, we aim at increasing the utilization rate of data and investigating whether those eliminated spans are totally useless, or to what extent they can improve the performance of coreference resolution. To achieve this, we propose a mention representation refining strategy where spans highly related to mentions are well leveraged…
Character linking, the task of linking mentioned people in conversations to the real world, is crucial for understanding the conversations. For the efficiency of communication, humans often choose to use pronouns (e.g., "she") or normal phrases (e.g., "that girl") rather than named entities (e.g., "Rachel") in the spoken language, which makes linking those mentions to real people a much more challenging than a regular entity linking task. To address this challenge, we propose to incorporate the richer context from the coreference relations among different mentions to help the linking. On the o…
Opinion mining, also called sentiment analysis, is the field of study that analyzes people opinions, sentiments, evaluations, appraisals, attitudes, and emotions towards entities such as products, services, organizations, individuals, issues, events, topics, and their attributes. Holistic lexicon-based approach does not consider the strength of each opinion, i.e., whether the opinion is very strongly negative (or positive), strongly negative (or positive), moderate negative (or positive), very weakly negative (or positive) and weakly negative (or positive). In this paper, we propose approach t…

In the last decade, the field of Neural Language Modelling has witnessed enormous changes, with the development of novel models through the use of Transformer architectures. However, even these models struggle to model long sequences due to memory constraints and increasing computational complexity. Coreference annotations over the training data can provide context far beyond the modelling limitations of such language models. In this paper we present an extension over the Transformer-block architecture used in neural language models, specifically in GPT2, in order to incorporate entity annotat…

Neural network has shown promising performance on coreference resolution systems that uses mention pair method. With deep neural network, it can learn hidden and deep relations between two mentions. However, there is no work on coreference resolution for Indonesian text that uses this learning technique. The state-of-the-art system for Indonesian text only states the use of lexical and syntactic features can improve the existing coreference resolution system. In this paper, we propose a new coreference resolution system for Indonesian text with mention pair method that uses deep neural network…

Entity coreference resolution is an important research problem with many applications, including information extraction and question answering. Coreference resolution for English has been studied extensively. However, there is relatively little work for other languages. A problem that frequently occurs when working with a non-English language is the scarcity of annotated training data. To overcome this challenge, we design a simple but effective ensemble-based framework that combines various transfer learning (TL) techniques. We first train several models using different TL methods. Then, duri…
